Duel Island -Gladiator-

Duel Island -Gladiator- is an event that occasionally occurs in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links. When in effect, players can earn event-exclusive rewards by constructing a "Defending Deck" that will Auto-Duel other players, and by challenging "Defending Decks" built by other players participating in the event.

As hinted by Tour Guide From the Underworld and Gladiator Beast Andal, this event is also intended to acclimate cautious players to the PvP atmosphere of Ranked Duels.

History

This event has run two times, throughout the following time periods:

  • February 27, 2018, 01:30 (EST) until March 9, 2018, 0:00 (EST)[Notes 1]
  • July 13, 2018, 02:45 (EDT) until July 23, 2018, 01:00 (EDT)

Event Details

Tour Guide translates Andal's growls for the player.

In order to participate in the event, the player must be at Stage 4 (DM) or higher.

During the event, when the player accesses the Duel Island area for the first time since the event started, they will be greeted by Gladiator Beast Andal growling at them. Tour Guide From the Underworld then shows up, telling Andal to be patient, before translating Andal's growls for the player. Through Tour Guide's translations, Andal welcomes the player and introduces himself. He explains that in Duel Island, the player can Duel against Decks built by Duelists around the world, but in turn, other players will come to challenge the player's Deck. Andal then exclaims he can't wait to tear apart challengers with his "BEAR hands," before Tour Guide takes a brief moment to assure the player that her translations are "more or less" what Andal is saying. Andal continues his growling, telling the player to see how far they can make it against Decks from around the world. Tour Guide then says that although Andal's choice of words may be daunting, newcomers shouldn't worry because this event isn't actually a PvP event. At this point in the February-March 2018 event, the dialogue ends.

In the July 2018 event, the dialogue instead continues with Andal growling again. Tour Guide then asks Andal if he has something to say. Translated, Andal proudly states that he'll be joining the fight this time around, and tells the player to behold the power of the mighty Gladiator Beasts. Tour Guide dismisses this with "...Whatever." In response, Andal exclaims a surprised growl, which the player perceives as "So mean..."

During the event, when the event allows the Lvl. 50 Trespasser to make its appearances and the player enters Duel Island for the first time since that update, they will be greeted by Andal growling at them. Tour Guide then shows up, translating the growls as "It's super-duper bonus time! Defeat the cuddly-wuddly furball and rack up tons of bonuses! ...And that furball is me!" Andal falls into silence at this, prompting Tour Guide to ask "What?" Andal then utters a single growl, which the player interprets as "I don't talk like that..." Tour Guide then haughtily asks if Andal has a problem, to which Andal responds with another growl that the player interprets as "Sorry..."

When the player enters Duel World for the first time since the event's conclusion, they will be greeted by Andal growling at them. Tour Guide shows up immediately, telling him to "Calm it, fuzzball." Andal's subsequent growls are then translated by her, telling the player that their time on Duel Island is coming to an end. He then prompts the player to use what they've learned from the island to achieve wins in Ranked Duels, bidding them good luck. Tour Guide comments that Andal is finally making some actual sense, before informing the player that Duel Island -Gladiator- is now over. She reminds the player to use their Lottery Coins before they expire, and cheerily tells the player that she'll see them around. Andal then emits a loud growl before the dialogue ends.

Defending Decks

After the player ends their dialogue with Gladiator Beast Andal and Tour Guide From the Underworld, they will be prompted to choose one of their character's Decks as their "Defending Deck." By default, the Defending Deck will be set as the player's current Active Deck. Although the player can choose any of their Decks, they can only designate one Deck at any given time (and by default, the character the Deck is set to), and any designated Deck that cannot be used in Duels will not be able to accept challenges from other players.

During the event, there is a chance that other players will encounter the player's Defending Deck (regardless of the challenged player's online status). If challenged, the Defending Deck will Auto-Duel against the challenger, independent of the player's control and without using any Skill set for it (including Auto-Activation Skills). The player cannot earn any EXP for any Duel conducted this way, and cannot view any of these Duels (except in a Replay after the Duel is finished). Furthermore, the player receives no notification concerning these Duels, except when their Defending Deck wins.

Once a Deck is set as a Defending Deck, it will remain that way for the rest of the event, unless the player later decides to set a different Deck as their Defending Deck. In the February-March 2018 event, if the player changed the contents of their Defending Deck (including setting a different Deck), there was an unspecified delay before the change(s) appeared for challenging players. In the July 2018 event, there was no such delay.

During the July 2018 event, it was stated that the more the player Duels in the event, the higher the chance of the player's Defending Deck appearing in other players' Event Maps.tt

AP

An AP Potion.

As a general rule, in order to Duel against an opponent's Deck in the event, the player must be able to spend 1 AP.[Notes 2] At the beginning of the event, the player starts with 5 AP, which is their maximum at the time. As the player's Title rank increases during the event, so does their maximum AP in increments of 1, to an absolute maximum of 10 AP.[Notes 3]

There are multiple methods of restoring AP. The main method is natural regeneration: 1 AP is restored every 30 minutes, regardless of the player's online status. Another method is through the use of AP Potions,[Notes 4] which can be earned from the Daily Bonuses, Event Missions, and cumulative Event Rewards. Additionally, 1 AP Potion could be earned from the Event Mission available each day, which was as follows:

Event Event Mission Reward Mission expiration
Feb-Mar 2018 Play 1 Duel(s) in Ranked Duels (surrenders are not counted.) 1 AP Potion[Notes 4] 23:59 (EST) each day of the event
July 2018 Play 5 Duel(s) in Ranked Duels (surrenders are not counted.) 1 AP Potion 0:59 (EDT) each day of the event

An EX AP Charge.

A third method of restoring AP debuted in the July 2018 event: EX AP (alternatively spelled "EXAP"). EX AP is separate from AP, but is unique in that it can only be acquired (and restored) by purchasing an EX AP Charge in the Shop using real-life currency (priced $0.99 in USD). Players can only purchase an EX AP Charge if they have 0 EX AP, and there is more than 1 hour remaining in the event, in which case it restores the player's EX AP by 8. By having EX AP, this allows the player to Duel against Defending Decks when they have 0 AP - albeit at the cost of losing 1 EX AP. EX AP does not carry over between events.

In the February-March 2018 event, it was also possible for players to regain 1 AP[Notes 2] for each Duel they won in Ranked Duels. However, this feature was removed in the July 2018 event.

Event Points

Event Points are earned through completing Duels in the event; they are important since they serve as one of the player's methods to earn rewards in this event. While in the event area, the player can see varying amounts of Event Points listed on opponents' icons, which represent the Event Points the player would earn from defeating a particular opponent's Deck. If the player loses or reaches a DRAW against one of these Decks, then they earn half the Event Points listed on that opponent's icon. If the player surrenders or disconnects from a Duel against one of these Deck, they earn no Event Points.

The player's Defensive Deck is also capable of earning Event Points for the player: each time it secures a victory, the player receives 3000 Event Points. However, they earn no Event Points if their Defensive Deck loses or reaches a DRAW.

Title

Event Points also define the player's temporary Title during the event, a cosmetic feature that only serves to indicate when the player's maximum AP will increase by 1.[Notes 3]

Opponents

At any given time, five random Duelists are always present on the Event Map. Each of them is represented by a spinning icon that displays the Duelist's username and Event Point worth; icons that spin faster emphasize Duelists with higher Event Point worths compared to others. The player can tap one of these icons to view that player's Deck name and "Ace Card",[Notes 5], and have the option to Duel or Auto-Duel against that Deck (as well as backing out). If the player wishes to view a different selection of these opponents, they may tap the "Reload" button, whereupon a group of five random Duelists will replace the previous selection, but as a result, that button will be rendered unusable for about 60 seconds. If the player chooses to Duel against one of these players' Decks, they will view another assortment of five random Duelists after that Duel concludes (including surrenders or disconnects). The Event Points of these opponents will never exceed 8000.[Notes 6] In the circumstance that the Defending Decks of five random Duelists cannot be found, 5 Standard Duelists will appear instead, equipped with the same Decks that they use in Duel World (based on the player's current highest Stage). In any case, the Event Point

Up to three additional opponents can appear on the Event Map as well, none of which require AP to be Dueled.[Notes 7] One of them can be a Friend from the player's Friend List, who can be easily identified by their gold-colored icon and will always have an Event Point worth of 5000. They are otherwise identical to the standard five random Duelists, but each Friend can only appear once per day on that player's Event Map, randomly.[Notes 8] The two other potential opponents are Intruders and Trespassers, whose Event Point worths are exceptionally higher than any other opponent in the event.

Regardless of the opponent, if the player initiates a Duel in the event, they will receive 500 EXP for a victory, and 250 EXP for either a loss or a DRAW.[Notes 9]

Intruder / Trespasser

The Intruder appears.

The Intruder and the Trespasser are opponents that randomly appear in the event, identified by their green-colored icons and their appearances as monsters. As of the July 2018 event, these opponents do not require AP to be Dueled against. While the Trespasser made its random appearances in the July 2018 event since the event's start, the Intruder only begins its random appearances partway through the event - specifically on March 2 00:00 (EST) for the February-March 2018 event, and July 16 01:00 (EDT) for the July 2018 event. They are identical in function, since when either of them is defeated, that opponent will use a higher-level Deck than they previously used (normally to a max of Level 40), which is accommodated by a higher Event Point reward. Their Event Point worths are as follows:

Feb-Mar 2018[Notes 10]
Level Event Points
10 5000
20 7500
30 10000
40 15000
July 2018
Level Event Points
10 8000
20 10000
30 12000
40 15000
50 20000

In the July 2018 event, a Level 50 version of the Trespasser began randomly appearing after July 19 01:00 (EDT), but only if the player had defeated its Level 40 version at least once. Additionally, the Level of the very first Intruder that appeared in that event was based on the player's Title at the time.

Currently, only Phantom Beast Wild-Horn serves the role of the Intruder, and only Gladiator Beast Andal serves the role of the Trespasser.

Daily Bonus

The Daily Bonus is an incentive for the player to enter the event area once each day (with "new days" starting from 14:00 (EDT) each day of the event). If the player does not redeem a day's rewards before the next day arrives, those rewards will be replaced by the next day's rewards.

In the February-March 2018 event, the Daily Bonus consisted of 1 AP Potion.[Notes 4] In the July 2018 event, it instead consisted of 1 AP Potion, 10 free random rewards from the Event Lottery, and a total of 15000 Event Points awarded for the first 5 Duels completed within the event area that day (1000 points for the first Duel, 2000 points for the second, etc.).

Rewards

There are two methods of earning rewards from this event: rewards earned through accumulating Event Points, and rewards received from the Event Lottery.

Event Lottery

Throughout the event, the player also receives Lottery Coins[Notes 12] whenever they earn Event Points, at a rate of 1 coin for every 100 Event Points earned (rounded up). The player can spend these Lottery Coins at the Event Lottery, where 1 random reward is issued per every 30 Lottery Coins spent. These random rewards can be purchased one at a time, or as many as possible (with a maximum of 10 random rewards purchased at a time). The rarity of a reward is indicated by the coloring of its panel when received, with rainbow-colored being the highest rarity, gold-colored being the medium rarity, and neutral-colored as the lowest rarity.

The player has access to the Event Lottery from the start of the event up until one week after the event's conclusion - specifically until March 16 01:00 (EDT) for the February-March 2018 event, and July 30 01:00 (EDT) for the July 2018 event.
