SummaryEdit

Joey is backed into a corner. Bonz has just used his "Call of the Haunted" Spell to return the three monsters that Joey had previously destroyed back to the field as Zombies, which not only gain a Field Power Bonus from the Graveyard field but also have the power of immortality. Joey Summons his "Garoozis" and orders it to attack the weakest of the three Zombies, "Clown Zombie". "Garoozis" destroys the Zombie with "Five-Slash Strike", but because "Call of the Haunted" is still on the field, "Clown Zombie" comes back to life instantly. Bonz explains that every time a Zombie monster resurrects, it comes back with 10% more ATK. The ATK of "Clown Zombie" rises to 1890, and Bonz orders it to counterattack with "Flame Dagger Acrobatic Attack". "Garoozis" is destroyed by a barrage of daggers, and Joey's Life Points drop to 1530.

Meanwhile, the gang is sprinting through the cave trying to find Joey. Tristan slows down, gasping for air, and attempts to do a head count, but they realize that Bakura is not with them. The gang contemplate what to do, but suddenly they hear Bakura screaming out from further up the cave. Bakura comes into view, sprinting as fast as he can, with a skeleton attached to his back. The gang runs away, with Bakura calling for them to wait up, until eventually the skeleton is destroyed, with Tristan crushing its skull with his foot. When the rest of the group looks up, they see that the cave has branched off. Téa comments on the cave's creepiness, and Tristan says that Joey won't be able to handle it. Yugi says that they have to find him as fast as possible, when suddenly Bakura triggers another trap.

A thunderous sound is heard from the other end of the cave, and slowly gets louder. The gang grows scared, and a large boulder suddenly comes into view, rolling straight at the group. Yugi, Téa, Tristan, and Bakura all run away down the left branch, with the boulder following right behind them. Bakura is furiously apologizing, but suddenly trips, loses his footing, and falls to the ground, and the boulder runs right over him. The rest of the group screams in terror, but soon realize that they are running straight into a dead end. With no options left, Tristan turns around and punches the boulder as hard as he can — and it bursts into pieces, to Yugi and Téa's amazement. As feathers fall to the ground, they realize that the boulder was just a balloon with a speaker inside that made rumbling noises. Bakura is revealed to be shaken up but fine. Tristan's anger boils over and he vows to make Pegasus pay. (Tristan's anger is cut from the dub.)

Back at the Duel Arena, Joey contemplates his predicament, wondering how he can possibly defeat immortal Zombies that resurrect with more attack points. Bandit Keith, Zygor, and Sid tell Joey to give up, because Keith's strategy is perfect and there is no way he can win. Joey looks over at his Star Chips, all of which are riding on the outcome of the Duel, and thinks back to Seto Kaiba calling him a loser and a dog. He finds the resolve in himself to shake off this negativity, and resolves to keep fighting for Serenity's sake. He vows to believe in his next card.

Joey's belief rewards him with "Time Wizard", the card that has gotten him out of sticky situations before. He thinks that "Time Magic" may have a chance of beating the immortal Zombies. He thinks that it's all or nothing, and plays "Time Wizard", which Keith is shocked by. Joey declares "Time Roulette", and the arrow on the wand of "Time Wizard" begins to spin. Bonz looks back in horror, but Keith tells him not to be scared, since "Time Wizard" only has a 50% chance of success. Keith says that Bonz needs to hope his luck stays true, which terrifies Bonz. With both Joey and Bonz pleading, the arrow slows down and finally stops — on a skull. Keith explains that when "Time Magic" fails, it leads to self-destruction. Joey's "Time Wizard" and "Flame Swordsman" are both swallowed up by a time vortex and destroyed. Joey is dealt Effect Damage equal to the ATK of the destroyed "Flame Swordsman", and his Life Points drop to 630. Joey is shocked that failing "Time Roulette" deals him this much damage.

Now out of options, Joey Sets a monster and ends his turn. Bonz is about to order "Dragon Zombie" to destroy it, but Keith stops him and tells him to strengthen his Zombie army instead, ordering him to play the "King of Ghosts". Bonz obliges and Summons "Pumpking the King of Ghosts" in Attack Position, which towers behind the rest of Bonz's Zombies. Bonz reveals the effect of "Pumpking": it can use its "Ectoplasm Fortification" to increase the ATK of all of his "Zombies" by 10% on each turn — and as the Zombies gain attack points, they grow even larger, too. Bonz orders "Dragon Zombie" to wipe away Joey's set "Kojikocy" with "Deadly Zombie Breath". Joey Sets another monster, "Armored Lizard", but after another ectoplasm boost, "Dragon Zombie" blows it away as well. Bonz says that Keith's combo is perfect, but Keith thinks that Bonz will have an even more unbeatable combo if he draws a certain card.

"Dragon Zombie" continues to wipe out more of Joey's defensive monsters — "Glassman" and "Masaki the Legendary Swordsman" — as "Pumpking" continues to power up Bonz's Zombies, with "Dragon Zombie" having reached 2720 ATK. Bonz again proclaims that Keith's Ghost combo is perfect. Joey closes his eyes and begins to despair, but the gang finally show up and call out to him. As Joey looks back at them, Keith motions to Sid and Zygor, who nod. Joey explains that he was dragged to the Arena against his will, and Sid and Zygor block the way between Joey and the gang, saying that they won't let the Duel be interrupted. Tristan attempts to rush them, but Sid pelts his eye with a rock and Zygor punches him in the gut, causing him to keel over in pain. Keith calls out to Joey, saying that if he leaves the Arena, he is forfeiting, and will lose all his Star Chips. Despite Téa and Bakura's protests, Keith says that he agreed to the Duel with those stipulations. Tristan urges Joey to keep going, and tosses him his wallet with Serenity's picture in it.

Keith asks Joey if he is going to continue or give up. Joey demands to know his identity, and Keith reveals himself, which surprises Yugi and the gang, and Yugi recounts the story of his loss to Pegasus which Kaiba told them. Keith gloats that since he has given Bonz the perfect strategy, Joey's fate is already sealed. Zygor declares that the only people going to Pegasus Castle will be the four of them. Bonz declares that this Graveyard Field will be Joey's graveyard, and Yugi is surprised by the idea of a Graveyard Field.

Joey looks down at Serenity's picture and resolves to keep fighting. He Sets another monster, vowing to keep defending until he finds an opening, but Keith laughs and reveals that a card in Bonz's Deck will put an end to that plan. Bonz draws and gets that card - the Trap "Stop Defense", which will stop Joey from playing monsters in Defense Position starting on the next turn. "Pumpking" gives "Dragon Zombie" an ectoplasm boost to 2880 ATK, and it eradicates Joey's Set "Tiger Axe" with "Deadly Zombie Breath". Keith gloats that now that Joey can't defend, he has nowhere to run.

Joey looks down at Serenity's picture again, and the gang encourage him not to give up. Joey clenches his fist and says he won't until the very end. He draws and Summons "Red-Eyes Black Dragon". Keith is shocked to learn that Joey has a card that rare. Joey says that if he can't defend, attacking is the only option, and so "Red-Eyes" destroys "Pumpking" with "Inferno Fire Blast", dropping Bonz to 855 Life Points. Yugi observes that now the Zombies stop powering up. Bonz realizes that since "Pumpking" was a Ghost from the start, "Call of the Haunted" can't bring it back. (In the dub, Yugi makes this observation.)

Keith tells Bonz that even with "Pumpking" gone, the Zombies are still sufficiently powered up. Bonz orders "Dragon Zombie" to attack, and "Red-Eyes" wastes away under the power of another "Deadly Zombie Breath". Joey falls to 150 Life Points. Keith cackles that now Joey's most powerful card is gone. Joey looks at his hand and tries to think of a way out. His only monster left is "Battle Warrior", and with just 700 ATK it stands no chance against the Zombies. Téa asks Yugi if there is any way Joey can win, and he thinks for a bit before coming up with something. He calls to Joey, saying that his deck has a card that can turn this around. Keith smirks and addresses Yugi, saying that although he may have beaten Kaiba, Keith's combo is perfect. Joey and Yugi exchange glances, and Joey says he understands and believes Yugi.

Joey draws "Shield & Sword", a Spell which swaps the ATK and DEF of every monster on the field. Joey says that he has to try. He Summons "Battle Warrior", which Bonz scoffs at, but then Joey reveals "Shield & Sword". Keith and Bonz reel in horror as every monster on the field becomes distorted and the Zombies begin to shrink. Keith thinks to himself that since the Zombies have no free will, they are unable to defend, and thus have 0 DEF — and the effect of "Shield & Sword" means that all of them now have 0 ATK. "Battle Warrior" also swaps its ATK with its DEF and rises to 1000 ATK. Joey launches his final attack, "Ultimate Battle Fist", and "Battle Warrior" punches through "Dragon Zombie". Keith thinks that the Zombies are unable to resurrect with zero attack points. Bonz's Life Points drop to 0, and Joey wins.

Keith hops off the ledge from where he was sitting and declares that it is time to go. (In the dub, he calls Bonz a loser.) Joey tells him that if he really is a Duelist, then he should battle fair next time. Keith scoffs at the idea, saying that tricking one's opponent is the whole point of card games, and that winning is the only thing that matters, no matter what it takes. Joey vows to defeat Keith, and Keith says that he doesn't have the skills. He, Sid, Zygor, and Bonz all walk away. Joey apologizes to the gang for making them worry, and Tristan says that since Joey won, he is forgiven. Téa and Bakura tell Joey that he did great, with Joey responding that it was just luck, but Yugi rejects this idea, saying that it was Joey's tenacity and convictions that made him win. Joey now has eight Star Chips, two away from reaching Pegasus Castle. Téa says that it's time to leave the creepy cave.

The gang approach the entrance to the cave, and see daylight ahead. They run towards it, but the light starts getting obstructed. On the outside of the cave, Sid, Zygor, and Bonz are shoving a boulder across the cave entrance, while Keith laughs and says that now they will never get out. The cave entrance is fully blocked off, and the three of them gasp. Bonz asks if this is too much, when suddenly Keith knocks Zygor to the ground. He scolds Bonz for losing. Bonz says that he only did what Keith told him to do, but Keith tells him to shut up and beats up him and Sid. Keith inserts the other three's Star Chips into his Dueling Gauntlet, giving him exactly ten. He declares that although it wasn't his plan, he is the first one to reach Pegasus Castle. He walks off, vowing his revenge on Pegasus, as the rest of his former alliance lie on the ground.

Inside the cave, the gang are unable to move the boulder, despite all five of them pushing it at once. Téa asks if they really are trapped, and Joey curses Keith to let them out.

"Battle Warrior" attacks and destroys "Dragon Zombie" (Bonz: 855 → 0 LP).

Differences in adaptationsEdit

  • The throwing knives used by "Clown Zombie" glow in the international version.
  • Honda having fangs and veins coursing through his forehead when he is angry that the huge "boulder" was really a huge balloon is cut out of the US version.
  • In the original, when Keith took away his minions' Star Chips, punching can be heard in the background. In the US version, this is removed.
  • Like in the previous episode, "Call of the Haunted" is changed from a Magic Card to a Trap Card in the US version.

ErrorsEdit

  • When Joey thinks about using "Time Wizard" to win previous Duels, he says that it fossilized Rex Raptor's Dinosaur, when it was actually "Red-Eyes Black Dragon", which is a Dragon.
  • When Bonz sets "Stop Defense", he called it a Trap Card in the international anime. The reason for this may come from "Defense Paralysis" whose artwork is the same as "Stop Defense".
  • In the dub, when Pumpking is Summoned, its ATK is shown at 1500.
  • When Joey fails at the effect of "Time Wizard", he loses 900 Life Points, half of "Flame Swordsman's" ATK. This calculation must have ignored the ATK of "Time Wizard", half of which would have been 250, making the total damage 1150, bringing Joey down to 380 Life Points.

TriviaEdit

  • This is the only episode in the entire series where "Time Wizard's" Skull effect was activated.
