Forum:Stuff I don't know during the Battle Phase

From Yugipedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Okay, I know this much, in this order, when monsters attack:

1. Battle step (can activate appropriate spells, traps, and monster effects at this time)

2. Damage Step (can only activate monster effects, spells, and traps that modify ATK or DEF)

3. Damage calculation (can only activate cards that state can be activated during the Damage calculation...I think)

My Questions:

1. Can I activate a monster effect/spell/trap that modifies ATK or DEF as a chain if my opponent activates a card that can only activate during Damage calculation? (Ex. My opponent activates Prideful Roar, so can I chain to Rush Recklessly?)

2. Are there any more parts in between those steps? If so, what do they do?

One more thing I hope you'll answer:

3. Can anyone show me an example of "missing your timing"? Yugioh DED 15:02, June 11, 2010 (UTC)

Very brief answers:
0) Damage calculation is a specific part of the Damage Step. You perform damage calculation during the Damage Step.
1) Cards that modify ATK/DEF can only be activated before damage calculation. They can't be activated during damage calculation, so in your example, you can't activate "Rush Recklessly".
2) See Breakdown of the Battle Phase. The Damage Step is a LOT more complicated. Assuming you're playing the TCG,
  1. Enter the Damage Step
  2. Flip the monster face-up, if it's face-down.
  3. Do any last-minute stuff, before damage calculation. (For example, activate "Rush Recklessly" or "Shrink".)
  4. Damage calculation. Compare ATKs/DEFs, possibly destroy monsters, and determine how much Battle Damage (if any) is going to be inflicted.
  5. Inflict damage, and activate effects like "Don Zaloog" that activate in response to damage.
  6. "Clean-up". Activate miscellaneous effects, like Flip Effects.
  7. The end of the Damage Step. Send the destroyed monster(s) to the Graveyard, and activate any effects that activate when the destroyed monster is sent to the Graveyard.
3) Example: You can only activate the effect of "Peten the Dark Clown" "when [it] is sent to your Graveyard". That's the only time that you can activate the effect. So, if you Tribute "Peten the Dark Clown" for a Tribute Summon, then you first send it to the Graveyard, and afterwards you finish the Tribute Summon. "When [it] is sent to the Graveyard" occurred at the spot I marked as ; however, you can't activate its effect at this time, since you're in the middle of a Tribute Summon. The earliest chance you get to activate the effect is after the Tribute Summon is successful. However, at this time, it's no longer "when [it] is sent to your Graveyard" - that happened a while ago - so you can't activate the effect here either. In total, there's no opportunity for you to activate the effect of "Peten the Dark Clown".
