Normal Monster

Blue-Eyes White Dragon
"Blue-Eyes White Dragon", a Normal Monster.

Normal Monsters (Japanese: つうじょうモンスター Tsūjō Monsutā) are a subcategory of monsters with no monster effects. Normal Monster Cards have a yellow card frame, and, starting from Starter Deck: Link Strike onwards, include the designation "/Normal" on their Type/Ability lines. All Normal Monster Cards are Main Deck cards.

In the card text box (which contains the effect on Effect Monsters), Normal Monster Cards include a piece of flavor text with no effect on gameplay; very rarely however, a Normal Monster's card text will feature an archetype condition, which has an effect on gameplay (e.g. "Summoned Skull" and "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts" in the English TCG).

There are Tuner and Pendulum Normal Monsters. Special Summon Monsters with no effects are not Normal Monsters. Some non-Normal Monsters can be treated as Normal Monsters with card effects, most notably Gemini monsters and some Trap Monsters; Tokens are treated as Normal Monsters on the field.

History

In the OCG/TCG, manga, and anime, Normal Monsters were originally the most common monsters. However, as the game's strategies evolved, Effect Monsters became more common and fewer Normal Monsters were released or reprinted. For a time, very few Booster Packs contained Normal Monsters and even those that do contain very few.

Following the introduction of Pendulum Monsters, Normal Monsters saw a slight resurgence in Booster Packs, in the form of Normal Pendulum Monsters. Still, traditional Normal Monsters began to see a comeback during the New Master Rules for various strategies and in the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime.

In Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's - Episode 121, Jack Atlas mentioned the history of Normal Monsters while discussing the Decks of Team Taiyo, which largely contained Normal Monsters.

In Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel, Normal Monsters are mostly used in tandem with Effect Monsters, and Spell/Trap Cards.
