"Battleguard", known as "Barbarian" (バーバリアン Bābarian) in the Japanese version, is an archetype used by Joey Wheeler in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and The Sledgehammer and Grizzlepike Jones in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V. Originally, one of the "Battleguards" belonged to Tristan Taylor, but he gave it to Joey before his Duel with Rex Raptor and he used them to defeat Rex's "Serpent Night Dragon" but were then destroyed by "Red-Eyes B. Due to their Japanese name ("Barbarian"), the "Battleguard" group is a sub-archetype of "Barian".
All of their anime support that was released in the OCG was retooled to support Warrior-Type monsters, making them an archetype only in the anime.
Playing style
The most powerful "Barbarian" monsters are high-Level, and focus on beatdown strategies, while the lower Level ones and their support focus on making the Tribute Summon of the high-Level "Barbarian" monsters easier, by Special Summoning monsters, negating attacks or gaining control of opponent monsters.
