A hand trap is an unofficial term used to describe monster effects that are activated from the hand in response to an opponent's actions. They are not actual Trap Cards in any way, but function similarly as a previously unseen card effect used to surprise or disrupt the opponent. In fact, depending on their effects they can be even more ubiquitous than actual Trap Cards, as cards in the hand tend to be less vulnerable than cards on the field.

One of the first hand traps released was "Kuriboh", which could be discarded to nullify the battle damage from an attack. Hand traps first became popular during the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX era with cards such as "[[D.D. Being activated from the hand, hand traps are more flexible and less vulnerable than normal Trap Cards, as they do not need to be first placed onto the field to be used. They can also be freely used during the opponent's first turn when they go first, mitigating some of the going-first advantage in Yu-Gi-Oh!.

There are several categories of hand traps. Some hand traps are used to inhibit or punish an opponent, such as those listed above, while other hand traps can be used to turn the tide of battle or stop a battle altogether such as "Swift Scarecrow" and "Battle Fader". Some archetypes and series such as ""C"", "Yo-kai Girl", "Ghostrick", "PSY-Frame", and "Nekroz" contain numerous hand traps.

Some Trap cards allow for their activation from the hand when certain conditions are met, making them similarly tricky to deal with as the monster "hand traps". Those cards are "Black Sonic", "Delta Crow - Anti Reverse", "Red Reboot", "Tachyon Transmigration", "Typhoon", "Evenly Matched", and "Infinite Impermanence".

A hand trap is an unofficial term used to describe cards (usually Monsters, but more rarely Traps) with effects that can be activated from the hand in the opponent's turn in order to disrupt the opponent's actions. These effects are usually Quick Effects that activate in response to an opponent's action, but can also be Trigger Effects that activate following certain actions taken by the opponent.

Hand traps have a wide array of effects. Most hand traps provide battle support and situational effect negates, while some have rarer and more powerful effects like monster removal, graveyard hate, and even Lingering effects.

Hand traps are usually staples that can be freely used regardless of the deck played, but some hand traps (e.g. "Nekroz of Trishula", "Miscellaneousaurus") only work with specific archetype decks or other themed decks. There are also some archetypes and series made up exclusively of hand traps, such as ""C"", "Yo-kai Girl", and "PSY-Frame".
