Forum:Disabling picture attribution

From Yugipedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Picture attribution is the feature that adds the text "Added by username" to image captions. It was added with the new skin. So it's been enabled by default since late October and wikis were not allowed to disable it at the time. However since 10 December, they've been allowed to disable it. Now that we've had in enabled for nearly three months, do people want to keep it or shall we disable it? -- Deltaneos (talk) 14:07, January 17, 2011 (UTC)

I think It's no good feature. I have seen some people uploaded images that exactly the same with the previous version just to get the attribution: "Added by username" from the main page. So I vote for disable it. Blackwings0605 (talk) 14:18, January 17, 2011 (UTC)

Agreed, it's annoying me when I see who upload it. --FredCat Ta.P.F.P.J.R.W.S.Th.P.S.C. 14:26, January 17, 2011 (UTC)
I say that its annoying, and that it needs to go, we have no need to see who "added" the image. And didn't we discuss this in Forum:Avoiding picture attribution...BassNettoHikari2...Talk to me... 17:04, January 17, 2011 (UTC)
Slightly different. That forum was when we weren't allowed to disable it and suggesting that we find alternatives to using thumbnails. This is asking if we should disable the feature outright, now that we're allowed to. -- Deltaneos (talk) 20:40, January 18, 2011 (UTC)
I've been using MonoBook and I assumed it was already disabled, though I haven't used the new skin in quite a while. I say disable it. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 18:26, January 18, 2011 (UTC)
It is optional, but it will have to be done via local MediaWiki:Wikia.css. --DaNASCAT (talkcontribs) 19:53, January 18, 2011 (UTC) <staff/>
Yeah, that's right. .picture-attribution {display:none; } should be added to that page to disable it. If anyone wants to disable it individually they can add that to their own style page Special:Mypage/wikia.css. That will stop it appearing for themselves only. Sorry if someone contacted you with this request... I should probably have mentioned at the start that we only need a local admin to be able to disable it.
Anyway...
The advantage of picture attribution is that when users see who is adding content, they become aware that wikis are editable by anyone. When they see that it's people just like themselves, they may decide to start contributing yo the site.
Disadvantages include:
  • People may egotistically try to get their name to appear on article. They may add or change things not necessarily helping the article just to have their name on it. It's also like signing an article (~~~~). An article is written by a group of people, all of whom can be seen in the history. The few who uploaded the pictures shouldn't be singled out and have their names printed on it.
  • The person who uploads the most recent version of the image will very rarely own the copyright or have any connection with the image. They're one of hundreds of people who found the image, someone who reverted to an older version after someone else changed it or someone who made a small change to someone else's image.

On the new skin, new users would probably be aware of that factor (anyone can edit the wikia) from the 'Recent Wiki Activity' box on the right anyway.
Clearly, the disadvantages outweigh the advantage. I also agree on disabling it. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 00:55, January 20, 2011 (UTC)
I'd like it to be disabled site-wide; I use Monobook myself (as many of you know), but I frequently use the "Wikia skin view" link in the sidebar, and occasionally switch to the Wikia skin, for testing, but I have picture attribution disabled for myself and I've never missed it.
If for some reason it is not disabled, though, I would recommend that we start deleting versions of images that appear to have been uploaded for the sole reason of getting the uploader's username on some page. In this case, when such an image is come across, it should be marked with {{Delete}} (or a more specific-purpose template, which would have to be written) noting which versions should be deleted. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 03:18, January 20, 2011 (UTC)

I say disable too. I don't have my style modified in any way either and I hadn't noticed it, I bet several people don't notice it either, the recent wiki edits are a more reliable way for people to know they can edit. And after all, most pictures are attributed to Konami, not to users. Efaj (talkcontribs) 17:29, January 22, 2011 (UTC)

I support the removal. I wouldn't mind giving up a few users for the quality of the articles. People are going to sign up regardless of whether image attribution is in effect or not, and to be honest, I doubt the mentioned effects of image attribution on the amount of new users is marginal, of about 6-10 users. It might seem like a lot, but many of the "extra" users end up not contributing, or only for the community part of the site. Toob (talkcontribs) 18:27, January 22, 2011 (UTC)

Disabled[edit]

Picture attribution has been disabled now. -- Deltaneos (talk) 02:56, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

Thank you very much. We appreciate it. Irohanihoheto (talkcontribs) 03:24, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

User pages[edit]

Similar to the "followed pages" box that usually is on user pages, (I don't know how difficult this would be) could there be a box saying something like "uploaded files"? Just a thought. Jon Kovacs (talkcontribs) 03:26, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

You would have to ask Wikia for that; it's beyond anything we could do ourselves on this wiki. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 06:00, January 26, 2011 (UTC)
