Duelist Kingdom is a private island owned by Maximillion Pegasus, and constitutes the location of the Duelist Kingdom tournament.

History

During World War II, the island was occupied by the U.S. military. Troops that died were buried in the caves under the island.

Maximillion Pegasus late came into ownership of the island and used as his own private residence. He sometimes invited people over to discuss buisness deals. Seto Kaiba went there to celebrate the completion of the holographic Duel Monsters technology. Duke Devlin.

He and The Big Five brought Mokuba there after kidnapping him as they attempted to gain control of KaibaCorp.

Pegasus used the island to host the Duelist Kingdom. For the tournament he had various Dueling Arenas set up across the island. (Battle Boxes in the manga.) During the tournament Kaiba made his way to the island to take Mokuba back. Pegasus forced Kaiba to take part in the tournament to some degree if he wished to save Mokuba. After Pegasus lost to Yugi at the end of the tournament, Yami Bakura attacked him and stole his Millennium Eye. In the manga, this killed Pegasus.

Locations

Pegasus' castle

Pegasus castle.

Pegasus castle was situated on the top of a hill. In the anime it was given a much longer staircase to the top. The tournament finals took place here. To gain entry, a player must insert 10 Star Chips into a lock. This rule was also made apply to visitors wishing to see Pegasus, including Seto Kaiba.

Dungeon

Kaiba meets Pegasus in the dunegon.

The dungeon is located underneath the castle. two ways of accessing the dungeon aer known. One is a doorway on the outside the castle that scanned a persons hand. If it recognised the handprint as authorized, they may enter. The other was a hidden passage inside the castle. It could be opened by leaning on a statue, causing a wall to slide across, revealing a stairway.

Tristan finds the hidden passage.

Kaiba was taken here by Kemo to see Mokuba. However Kemo triggered a hidden alarm and Kaiba fled. He managed to find Pegasus, who showed him Mokuba. Pegasus then trapped Mokuba's soul in a "Soul Prison" card in front of Kaiba.

Tristan went to the dungeon to find Mokuba's bosy, while Yugi dueled Pegasus. He snuck around in a suit of armor and accidentially found the hidden passage, by falling onto the statue. Pegasus henchmen found him, but Yami Bakura helped him escape.

Pegasus has annex, containing rooms for guests waiting to see him. Inside one such room is a screen on the wall, which Pegasus can use to contact people in the room.

In the manga, Croquet told Seto Kaiba he could go here, when he refused to let him see Pegasus. Outraged Kaiba took Croquet hostage and went here, demanding Pegasus see him immediatly. After receiving news that Yugi had gotten 10 Star Chips, Pegasus contacted Kaiba and told him to take 5 Star Chips, which he must wager in a Duel against Yugi. If Kaiba wins, then he may see him.

Sanctuary

Pegasus' sanctuary.

Pegasus sanctuary was a private tower that overlooked the location of the tournament finals. This location was only present in the anime. It contained items to honor his memory of Cecelia.

While invesigating the arena where Pegasus' dueled Kaiba, to see if he'd been cheating Téa, Tristan and Bakura found a hole in the wall that would have allowed someone in the tower to spy on the Duel. Suspecting Pegasus of cheating they snuck into the sanctuary, by climbing up the side of the tower. However Pegasus confronted the intruders and, using his Millennium Eye, transported them to another chamber, where some occult activity took place. As Pegasus attempted to use his Millennium Eye on them, Yami Bakura countered with the Millennium Ring. Yami Bakura then transported Tristan, Téa and Bakura back to their rooms, causing them to forget the events of this night.

Interior.

After losing to Yugi, Pegasus went to the sanctuary, where he released the souls of Solomon Muto, Seto Kaiba and Mokuba Kaiba. He also leaft a dairy of his quest to revive Cecelia. Before he could leave, Yami Bakura faced him in a Shadow Game and took his Millennium Eye.

With Pegasus missing, Yugi and his friends went to the sanctuary to investigate, where they found the diary he left.

Underground

The island has some underground caverns. Bandit Keith managed to find the way into them. He and his goons ganged-up on Joey Wheeler and pulled him in here.

Inside the caverns were two main passages, one led to the Graveyard and the other led to the Labyrinth. Bakura was able to navigate through the tunnels in the direction of Pegasus castle, since his Millennium Ring was pointing at Pegasus' Millennium Eye.

The tunnels were lined with traps, such as a fake giant boulder, which rolled through the tunnels after someone steps on a trap.

Joey was made face against Bonz in the graveyard. After he won, Keith had Bonz, Sid and Zygor trap Joey and his friends inside, by pushing a large boulder in front of the entrance.

Graveyard

Main article: The Graveyard.
The Graveyard.

The Graveyard, called the Crypt in the manga was where Joey was made duel Bonz. The area was lined with skulls and gravestones. In the manga it had a Battle Box, while in the anime it had a Dueling Arena. Zombie-Type monsters were given a Field Power Bonus here.

Bonz was given an advantage, since he'd made a Zombie Deck before hand, but Joey managed to beat him.

Labyrinth

The edges of the tunnel become smoother and straighten out into solid walls as the tunnels become the Labyrinth maze.

Past the maze is another dueling arena, where the Eliminators, the Paradox Brothers waited. This arean was set up for Labyrinth Duels. Past them was the exit to surface just outside the castle. In order to leave, entrants must defeat the Paradox Brothers in a Duel and choose from one of two doors, only one of which they said led out. In reality both doors went to the same place and the brothers tried to trick the players into thinking whichever door they picked was the wrong one.
