Card Rulings:Shrink
TCG Rulings
- This card can be activated during the Damage Step, before Damage Calculation.[1]
- If a monster affected by "Shrink" is turned face-down and face-up again that turn, the effect of "Shrink" is no longer applied.[1]
- Even if a monster is targeted by multiple copies of "Shrink", its ATK will still be half of its original ATK. For example, if a monster with 1400 original ATK is affected by 2 copies of "Shrink", its ATK will be 700 NOT 350.[1]
- The effect of "Shrink" works like "Megamorph", setting a new current ATK based on original ATK. If the same monster is targeted by both "Shrink" and "Megamorph", only the effect of the card that resolved last will be applied.[1]
- If a monster's ATK is modified by a Field or Equip Spell Card, or a Continuous Effect of a monster or Trap Card, etc.,and it is targeted by "Shrink", first calculate half of its original ATK, then add the appropriate modifiers from the Equip Spell, etc.[1]
- If “Shrink” affects a monster whose original ATK is set by its effect when it is Summoned, like “Maju Garzett”, “Chimeratech Overdragon” or “Megarock Dragon”, that monster’s ATK will become 0, and remain 0 even after the effect of “Shrink” wears off.[1]
- If “Shrink” affects a monster with ATK that varies due to its Continuous Effect, like “Gren Maju Da Eiza” or “King of the Skull Servants”, that monster’s ATK will be halved. If its ATK changes due to its own effect in the same turn, recalculate the effect of "Shrink" based on the new original ATK. When the effect of “Shrink” wears off, that monster’s ATK will be calculated as normal.[1]
- If "Shrink" affects a monster whose ATK is doubled by "Limiter Removal", that monster's ATK will become half of its original (printed) ATK.[1]
- If "Bottomless Trap Hole" is activated in response to a Summon and "Shrink" is chained so that the monster's ATK is less than 1500 when "Bottomless Trap Hole" resolves, that monster will not be destroyed and removed from play by "Bottomless Trap Hole".[1]
- If a monster affected by "Shrink" attacks while "Mirror Wall" is in play, both effects are applied and the monster's ATK becomes 1/4 its original ATK. Because "Mirror Wall" continually recalculates, the result is the same no matter which card is activated first.[1]
- If a monster whose ATK is reduced by "Dark Jeroid" is affected by "Shrink", first calculate half that monster's original ATK, then subtract 800 for "Dark Jeroid's" effect; this becomes the monster's current ATK.[1]
- If "Exarion Universe" is targeted by "Shrink", its ATK will become half of its original ATK, even if its effect to reduce its own ATK by 400 has been used.[1]
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Amazoness Spellcaster: If either of the targeted monsters is affect by "Shrink" before "Amazoness Spellcaster" resolves, the ATK values printed on the monsters will be switched, and the effect of "Shrink" effectively disappears. If a monster that has its original ATK changed by "Amazoness Spellcaster" is affected by "Shrink", its ATK will become half of the changed original ATK.
- Arcana Force EX - The Light Ruler: The tails effect of "Arcana Force EX - The Light Ruler" can chain multiple times in the same Chain. Example: When "Arcana Force EX - The Light Ruler" is targeted by "Shrink", its effect activates. If "Ring of Destruction" is chained to its effect, its effect activates again.
- Arcana Force I - The Magician: If "Arcana Force I - The Magician" is affected by a Spell Card that changes its ATK, like "Shrink" or "Rush Recklessly", first the Spell Card’s effect is applied, then "Arcana Force I - The Magician’s" effect is applied, changing its current ATK to twice its original ATK, or 2200.
- Black Garden: If a monster has its ATK halved by "Black Garden", and afterwards its original ATK is halved by "Shrink", the monster's ATK becomes half its original ATK. When the effect of "Shrink" is no longer applied, the monster's ATK returns to its original ATK.
- Comrade Swordsman of Landstar: If a Warrior-Type monster is targeted by "Shrink" while its ATK is being increased with "Comrade Swordsman of Landstar's" effect, first the original ATK of the Warrior-Type monster is halved, then the 400 ATK gain is reapplied
- Darkblaze Dragon: If "Darkblaze Dragon" has its original ATK and DEF doubled to create a new current ATK and DEF and "Shrink" is used on the "Darkblaze Dragon", the current ATK of "Darkblaze Dragon" becomes half of its original ATK. (its ATK would be 600 and its DEF would be 2000)
- Fusion Devourer: If "Shrink" is activated in the Damage Step targeting a Fusion Monster battling "Fusion Devourer", that Fusion Monster's ATK will be 0 for Damage Calculation.
- Goggle Golem: If "Goggle Golem" has its ATK halved by "Shrink" and it is Normal Summoned again, its ATK will be half its new original ATK, or 1050. (This is the same whether "Shrink's" effect was applied before or after "Goggle Golem" was Normal Summoned again.)
- Gradius' Option: "Shrink" has no effect on "Gradius' Option".
- Jester Lord: If you activate "Shrink" targeting "Jester Lord," its original ATK of 0 will be halved then its Continuous Effect will be reapplied. (The end result is no change in ATK.)
- Karate Man: If the effect of "Shrink" is applied after "Karate Man's" effect has been used, its ATK will become 500. If "Karate Man" is affected by "Shrink", then its effect is activated, its ATK will become 2000.
- Light and Darkness Dragon: If "Shrink" is used to halve the original ATK of "Light and Darkness Dragon", the original ATK of "Light and Darkness Dragon" is halved to create a new current ATK and then the ATK and DEF lost by the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" is reapplied. Example: If you use the second effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon" twice (500 X 2 = 1000 lost ATK and DEF) and "Shrink" is used to halve the original ATK of "Light and Darkness Dragon", the effect of "Shrink" is applied (2800 / 2 = 1400 ATK) and then "Light and Darkness Dragon's"ATK is reduced by 1000 (1400 - 1000 = 400) for a total of 400 ATK and 1400 DEF. When the effect of "Shrink" is no longer applied (because the turn had ended, etc.), reapply the lost ATK and DEF to the "Light and Darkness Dragon's" original ATK of 2800. (In our example, the values would be 1800 ATK and 1400 DEF)
- Light End Dragon: If “Light End Dragon” or “Dark End Dragon” activate their effects, but an effect like “Shrink” is chained, so that when the effect resolves, they have less than 500 ATK or DEF, you cannot reduce their ATK and DEF by 500 to resolve the effect, so the effect is not applied.
- Riryoku: If this card targets a monster that is affected by "Shrink", its ATK will become half of the halved ATK, or 1/4 its original ATK. If a monster whose ATK is halved by "Riryoku" is affected by "Shrink", its ATK will become half of its original (printed) ATK.
- Shield & Sword: If "Shrink" affects a monster affect by "Shield & Sword" after "Shield & Sword's" effect is applied, its ATK will be half of the switched ATK (ie., half of its original DEF). If "Shield & Sword's" effect is applied after "Shrink's", that monster's ATK will become equal to its original DEF, and its original DEF will be equal to its original ATK (The effect of "Shrink" effectively disappears).
- Twin-Shield Defender: "Twin-Shield Defender" halves the current ATK of the targeted monster, including any gains and/or losses from effects.
- Example 2: "Sangan's" original ATK is halved by "Shrink" to 500 ATK. If its ATK is halved by "Twin-Shield Defender", it will have 250 ATK.
- Twin-Shield Defender: If "Shrink" or "Megamorph" is activated after "Twin-Shield Defender's" effect resolves, "Twin-Shield Defender's" effect disappears.
- Example 1: If "Sangan's" ATK is halved by "Twin-Shield Defender" to 500 ATK and afterwards its original ATK is halved by "Shrink", it will have 500 ATK.
- Unstable Evolution: "Unstable Evolution" changes the equipped monster's original ATK. If the equipped monster is targeted by "Shrink", its original ATK determined by "Unstable Evolution" is halved.
OCG Rulings
- After a monster has had its ATK increased by "Honest", when it is targetted by "Shrink", the monster's ATK becomes half its original ATK.[2]
- When "Shrink" targets a monster affected by "Black Garden", "Shrink" will halve the monster's Original ATK, not the monster's halved ATK. During the End Phase, the monster's ATK will return to its Original ATK.[3]
- Example: "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" (ATK 3000) is Summoned, and its ATK is halved to 1500. "Shrink" will make its ATK 1500. During the End Phase, "Blue-Eyes White Dragon"'s ATK returns to 3000.
- When "Shrink" is chained to "Light End Dragon"/"Dark End Dragon"'s effect so that the mosnter has less than 500 ATK/DEF when resolving the monster's effect, then then the entire effect is not applied.[4]
- "Shrink" will reduce "The Wicked Avatar" to 0 ATK, but then "The Wicked Avatar"'s effect will immediately override "Shrink" and adjust "The Wicked Avatar"'s ATK to the strongest monster on the field +100.[5]
- If a monster affected by "Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind" is targeted by "Shrink", its ATK will become half its Original ATK. When the effect of "Shrink" stops being applied during the End Phase, the monster's ATK becomes its Original ATK.[6]
- The Original ATK and DEF of the "Emissary of Darkness Token" Special Summon by "Gorz the Emissary of Darkness" is "?", so it will be treated as "0" when interacting with "Shrink" and "Megamorph". Both will make the ATK of the "Emissary of Darkness Token" become 0. When the effect of "Shrink" is no longer applied, the "Emissary of Darkness Token" will have 0 ATK. When the effect of "Megamorph" is no longer applied, the ATK of "Emissary of Darkness Token" will return to what it was when "Emissary of Darkness Token" was Summoned.[7]
- If "Emissary from Pandemonium" has its ATK/DEF halved by its effect and then it is affected by "Shrink" or "Megamorph", then "Shrink" and "Megamorph" use 1300 to determine the new ATK. "Shrink" will make its ATK 650, etc. If "Skill Drain" is later activated, then the effect of "Emissary from Pandemonium" will be negated, but it will still have 650 ATK.[8]
- After the Original ATK of "Jester Lord" is halved by "Shrink", its ATK will change by its own effect.[9]
- Example: When "Jester Lord" has 2000 ATK by its own effect and "Shrink" is activated, "Shrink" will make "Jester Lord" have 0 ATK. Afterwards, you apply the effect of "Jester Lord", so that "Jester Lord" has 2000 ATK.[9]
- If "Jurak Velhipto" is affected by "Shrink", then "Jurak Velhipto" will have 0 ATK. When the effect of "Shrink" is no longer applied, "Jurak Velhipto" will remain at 0.[10]
