World Championship 2016 Special: Yugi vs. Kaiba

Yugi vs. Kaiba was a scripted Duel that took place during the second day of the World Championship 2016 in Orlando, Florida around ?:?? PM on August 21, 2016. Dan Green and Eric Stuart reprised their roles as Yugi Muto and Seto Kaiba, respectively.

Synopsis

Featured Duel: Yugi Muto vs. Seto Kaiba

Turn 1: Yugi Muto
Yugi activates "Graceful Charity", allowing him to draw 3 cards at the cost of discarding 2 cards ("Electromagnetic Turtle" and "Magician Navigation"). He then Normal Summons "Magician's Rod" (1600/100) in Defense Position. Since "Magician's Rod" was Normal Summoned, Yugi activates its effect, allowing him to add a Spell/Trap Card that lists "Dark Magician" in its text from his Deck to his hand.

He adds "Dark Magical Circle", then activates it. When it's activated, he is allowed to look at the top 3 cards of his Deck and add 1 "Dark Magician" or 1 Spell/Trap Card that lists "Dark Magician" in its text to his hand. He adds "Dark Magician" to his hand and places the other two card back on the top of his Deck. Yugi Sets a card.

Turn 2: Seto Kaiba
Kaiba activates the Field Spell "Mausoleum of White". Since he controls no monsters, Kaiba Special Summons "Kaiser Vorse Raider" (1900/1200) from his hand in Attack Position. He then Normal Summons "Maiden with Eyes of Blue" (0/0) in Attack Position. Kaiba activates the first effect of "Mausoleum of White" to target his "Maiden with Eyes of Blue", then send "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from his Deck to the Graveyard to increase that monster's ATK by the sent monster's Level x 100 (0 → 800/0). Since "Maiden of Eyes of Blue" was targeted for an attack or a card effect, Kaiba activates its effect, Special Summoning another "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" (3000/2500) from his Deck in Attack Position.

Yugi activates his Set "Magical Dimension", Tributing "Magician's Rod" to Special Summon "Dark Magician" (2500/2000) from his hand in Attack Position. The last effect of "Magical Dimension" activates, destroying "Maiden with Eyes of Blue". The effect of "Dark Magical Circle" then activates. Since "Dark Magician" was Special Summoned, Yugi can banish Kaiba's "Blue-Eyes White Dragon". Kaiba Sets a card.

Turn 3: Yugi Muto
Yugi Normal Summons "Template:Anime" (1000/700) in Attack Position. He activates its effect, Tributing it to reveal the top five cards of his Deck, add any Spell/Trap Card revealed to his hand, and discard any monsters. Yugi reveals "Spellbinding Circle", "Thousand Knives", "Seven Tools of the Bandit", "Mystic Box", and "Dark Illusion", all of which are added to his hand.

Yugi attacks "Kaiser Vorse Raider" with "Dark Magician", but Kaiba activates his Set "Shadow Spell" to prevent "Dark Magician" from attacking and reduce its ATK by 700. However, Yugi activates the effect of "Magician's Navigation" in his Graveyard, banishing it from his Graveyard to negate the effects of "Shadow Spell" until the end of the turn. The attack continues, and "Kaiser Vorse Raider" is destroyed (Kaiba: 4000 → 3400). However, the effect of "Kaiser Vorse Raider" activates. Since it was destroyed by battle, "Dark Magician" loses 500 ATK (2500 → 2000/2000). Yugi Sets two cards.

During the End Phase, the effect of "Magician's Navigation" expires and "Dark Magician" loses 700 ATK due to "Shadow Spell" (2000 → 1300/2000).

Turn 4: Seto Kaiba
Kaiba activates "Pot of Greed" to draw 2 cards. He then Normal Summons "Alexandrite Dragon" (2000/100) in Attack Position. Kaiba activates "Silent Doom" to Special Summon a Normal Monster from his Graveyard in Defense Position, but it won't be able to attack. Kaiba Special Summons "Blue-Eyes White Dragon". He then activates the second effect of "Mausoleum of White" to Normal Summon "Sage with Eyes of Blue" (0/1500) in Attack Position, in addition to his regular Normal Summon/Set.

Since "Sage with Eyes of Blue" was Normal Summoned, Kaiba can add a Level 1 LIGHT Tuner monster other than "Sage with Eyes of Blue" from his Deck to his hand. He adds "The White Stone of Ancients". He then activates "Cards of Consonance" to discard "The White Stone of Ancients" and draw 2 cards.

Kaiba tunes "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" to "Sage with Eyes of Blue" to Synchro Summon "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon" (2500/3000) in Attack Position. He then banishes "Kaiser Vorse Raider" and "Sage with Eyes of Blue" to Special Summon "Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End" (3000/2500) from his hand in Attack Position. Kaiba activates the effect of "Chaos Emperor Dragon", paying 1000 LP (Kaiba: 3400 → 2400) to send all cards on the field and in both players' hands to the Graveyard and inflict 300 damage to Yugi for each card sent to the Graveyard. Yugi activates the effect of "Clear Kuriboh" in his hand, discarding it to negate the effects of "Chaos Emperor Dragon".

Kaiba attacks "Dark Magician" with "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon", but Yugi activates the effect of "Electromagnetic Turtle" in his Graveyard, banishing it in an attempt to end Kaiba's Battle Phase. Kaiba counters with the effect of "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon", negating the activation of the effect of "Electromagnetic Turtle" in the Graveyard. The attack continues, but Yugi activates his Set "Spellbinding Circle" to prevent "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon" from attacking and decrease its ATK by 700 (2500 → 1800/3000). Since Yugi activated a Spell/Trap card during Kaiba's turn, he Special Summons "Magician of Dark Illusion" (2100/2500) from his hand in Defense Position. Due to its own effect, "Magician of Black Illusion" is also treated as "Dark Magician" while it is on the field. This activates the effect of "Dark Magical Circle", allowing Yugi to banish "Chaos Emperor Dragon".

Kaiba attacks and destroys "Dark Magician" with "Alexandrite Dragon" (Yugi: 4000 → 3300). During the End Phase, Kaiba activates the effect of "The White Stone of Ancients" in his Graveyard. Since it was sent there this turn, he Special Summons another "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from his Deck in Attack Position.

Turn 5: Yugi Muto
Since he controls "Dark Magician", Yugi activates "Thousand Knives" to destroy "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon". Kaiba activates the effect of "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon" in response, Tributing it to Special Summon "Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon" (2500/3000) from his Extra Deck in Defense Position, but it will be destroyed during the End Phase. Since "Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon" was Special Summoned, its effect activates, preventing all Dragon-Type monsters that Kaiba currently controls from being targeted or destroyed by card effects until the end of the next turn, which also protects it from the effect of "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon".

Since Yugi activated a Spell Card, the effect of "Magician of Dark Illusion" activates, allowing Yugi to Special Summon "Dark Magician" from his Graveyard in Attack Position. This activates the effect of "Dark Magical Circle", allowing Yugi to banish "Mausoleum of White". Yugi overlays "Dark Magician" and "Magician of Dark Illusion" to Xyz Summon "Ebon High Magician" (2300/2800) in Defense Position. Yugi then banishes "Magician's Rod" and "Clear Kuriboh" from his Graveyard to Special Summon "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning" (3000/2500) from his hand in Attack Position.

Yugi attacks "Alexandrite Dragon" with "Black Luster Soldier", but Kaiba activates his Set "Negate Attack" in an attempt to negate the attack and end Yugi's Battle Phase. However, Yugi activates his Set "Seven Tools of the Bandit", paying 1000 LP (Yugi: 3300 → 2300) to negate the effect of "Negate Attack" and destroy it. The attack continues, and "Alexandrite Dragon" is destroyed (Kaiba: 2400 → 1400). Since "Black Luster Soldier" destroyed an opponent's monster in battle, its effect activates, allowing to make a second attack in a row. Yugi attacks "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" with "Black Luster Soldier", and both monsters are destroyed. Yugi Sets a card.

Turn 6: Seto Kaiba
During Kaiba's Standby Phase, he activates the effect of "Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon", allowing him to Special Summon "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from his Graveyard in Attack Position. Kaiba then activates "Template:Anime", drawing until he has 5 cards in his hand, but he must discard his entire hand during his 5th Standby Phase after activation (his hand has one card, so he draws four cards). He then activates "A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon", returning "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" to his hand to destroy all Spell/Trap Cards on the field. Yugi's "Dark Magical Circle" and his Set "Mystic Box" are destroyed.

Kaiba activates "Trade-In", discarding "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" to draw 2 cards. He then activates "Pot of Desires", banishing the top 10 cards of his Deck face-down to draw another 2 cards. Kaiba activates "Silver's Cry" to Special Summon "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from his Graveyard in Attack Position. He also activates "Swing of Memories" to Special Summon another "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from his Graveyard in Attack Position, but it will be destroyed during the End Phase. Finally, Kaiba Normal Summons "Luster Dragon" (1900/1200) in Attack Position and switches "Azure-Eyes" to Attack Position.

Kaiba attacks "Ebon High Magician" with the second "Blue-Eyes White Dragon". Yugi activates the effect of "Ebon High Magician", detaching an Xyz Material from it to activate a Spell/Trap card from his hand. He activates "Magic Cylinder" from his hand, which negates the attack of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" and inflicts damage to Kaiba equal to his monster's current ATK. Kaiba responds with "Enemy Controller", Tributing his attacking "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" to take control of "Ebon High Magician" until the end of the turn. Since its original target left the field, the effect of "Magic Cylinder" is negated. Yugi activates the effect of "Ebon High Magician" again, detaching its last Xyz Material to activate "Dark Illusion" from his hand, negating the activation of "Enemy Controller" and destroying it.

Kaiba attacks and destroys "Ebon High Magician" with "Blue-Eyes White Dragon". Since "Ebon High Magician" was sent from the field to the Graveyard, Yugi activates its effect, allowing him to Special Summon "Dark Magician Girl" (2000/1700) from his Deck in Attack Position. "Dark Magician Girl" gains 300 ATK for every "Dark Magician" and "Magician of Black Chaos" in any Graveyard (2000 → 2300/2000).

The last effect of "Ebon High Magician" activates, allowing Yugi to destroy "Luster Dragon". Kaiba attacks and destroys "Dark Magician Girl" with "Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon" (Yugi: 2300 → 2100). Kaiba Sets two cards.

Turn 7: Yugi Muto
Yugi activates "Template:Anime", forcing both players to draw until they have six cards in their hand. Since they each have no cards in their hand, both Yugi and Kaiba draw 6 cards. Since he has drawn it, Yugi Special Summons "Palladium Oracle Mahad" (2500/2100) from his hand in Attack Position.

Yugi activates "Pot of Greed" to draw 2 cards. He then activates "Pot of Desires", banishing the top 10 cards of his Deck face-down to draw another 2 cards. Yugi equips "Palladium Oracle Mahad" with "Magic Formula", increasing its ATK by 700 (2500 → 3200/2100). Yugi also activates "Diffusion Wave-Motion", paying 1000 LP (Yugi: 2100 → 1100) to allow "Palladium Oracle Mahad" to attack all monsters Kaiba controls once each. "Mahad" attacks and destroys "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" and "Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon" (Kaiba: 1400 → 500). Yugi Sets four cards.

Turn 8: Seto Kaiba
Kaiba activates the effect of "The White Stone of Ancients" in his Graveyard, banishing it to return a "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from his Graveyard to his hand. He then reveals "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" in his hand to Special Summon "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon" (3000/2500) from his hand in Attack Position. Due to its own effect, "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon" is also treated as "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" while it is on the field or in the Graveyard. Kaiba activates the effect of "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon" to destroy "Palladium Oracle Mahad". Since it was destroyed, its effect activates, allowing Yugi to Special Summon "Dark Magician" from his Graveyard in Attack Position. Because "Magic Formula" was sent from the field to the Graveyard, Yugi gains 1000 LP (Yugi: 1100 → 2100).

Kaiba activates "Return of the Dragon Lords" to Special Summon "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from his Graveyard in Attack Position. He then activates "Polymerization", fusing the "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" in his hand with the "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" and "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon" on his field to Fusion Summon "Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" (4500/3800) in Attack Position.

Kaiba attacks "Dark Magician" with "Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon", but Yugi activates his Set "Magical Hats", hiding "Dark Magician" under one of four hats. A replay occurs, and Kaiba attacks one of the hats, but it is empty. Kaiba activates the effect of "Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon", sending "Blue-Eyes Twin Burst Dragon" from his Extra Deck to the Graveyard to allow it to attack again. Kaiba attacks another hat, but it is also empty. Kaiba activates the effect of "Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" again, sending "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" from his Extra Deck to the Graveyard to allow it to attack a third time. Kaiba attacks a third hat, but it is again revealed to be empty. Since it is the only hat left, Yugi releases "Dark Magician" from its hat.

Kaiba activates "Template:Anime", destroying his own "Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" to inflict damage to both players equal to its ATK. He then activates "Template:Anime", protecting himself from "Ring of Destruction", but Yugi activates his Set "Template:Anime" to apply the effect of "Ring of Defense" to himself instead. Kaiba then activates "De-Fusion" to return "Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" to his Extra Deck and Special Summon its Fusion Materials (3000/2500 each) from his Graveyard in Attack Position. Since its original target left the field, the effect of "Ring of Destruction" is negated. Kaiba activates his Set "Gift of the Mystical Elf" to gain LP equal to the number of monsters currently on the field x 300 (Kaiba: 500 → 1700).

Kaiba attacks "Dark Magician" with "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon", but Yugi activates his Set "Mirror Force", destroying all of Kaiba's Attack Position monsters. Kaiba, however, counters by banishing "Return of the Dragon Lords" from his Graveyard, preventing his monsters from being destroyed by "Mirror Force". The attack continues, and "Dark Magician" is destroyed (Yugi: 2100 → 1600). Kaiba attacks Yugi directly with "Blue-Eyes White Dragon", but Yugi activates his Set "Nutrient Z". Since he would take 2000 or more damage from a single attack, he gains 4000 LP before damage calculation (Yugi: 1600 → 5600 → 2600). Kaiba attacks Yugi directly with his second "Blue-Eyes White Dragon", but Yugi discards "Kuriboh" from his hand to reduce the damage to 0.

During his Main Phase 2, Kaiba activates "Dragon's Mirror", banishing his three "Blue-Eyes" monsters to once again Fusion Summon "Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" in Attack Position. He Sets one card.

Turn 9: Yugi Muto
Yugi activates "Template:Anime" to shuffle all cards he controls (0) and in his hand (0) into his Deck, then draw 5 cards. Since Yugi has added it from his Deck to his hand with this effect, he Special Summons "Watapon" (200/300) from his hand in Defense Position. He then activates "Premature Burial", paying 800 LP (Yugi: 2600 → 1800) to Special Summon "Magician of Dark Illusion" from his Graveyard in Attack Position. He then activates "Upstart Goblin", drawing 1 card and increasing Kaiba's LP by 1000 (Kaiba: 1700 → 2700). This activates the effect of "Magician of Dark Illusion", allowing Yugi to Special Summon "Dark Magician" from his Graveyard in Attack Position.

Yugi Tributes "Magician of Dark Illusion", "Dark Magician", and "Watapon" to Tribute Summon "Template:Anime" (?/?) in Attack Position. "Slifer the Sky Dragon" gains 1000 ATK for each card in Yugi's hand ("Slifer": ? → 2000/? → 2000). Yugi then activates "Double Spell" ("Slifer": 2000 → 1000/2000 → 1000) by discarding "Makiu the Magical Mist" ("Slifer": 1000 → 0/1000 → 0), Yugi activates "Card of Demise" from Kaiba's Graveyard. He draws until he has 5 cards in his hand, but he must discard his entire hand during his 5th Standby Phase after activation ("Slifer": 0 → 5000/0 → 5000).

Yugi attacks and destroys "Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" with "Slifer the Sky Dragon" (Kaiba: 2700 → 2200). Yugi Sets one card ("Slifer": 5000 → 4000/5000 → 4000).

Turn 10: Seto Kaiba
Kaiba activates "Template:Anime" by paying 1000 LP (Kaiba: 2200 → 1200). He declares the name of a monster, and if that monster is in Yugi's Deck, Kaiba can add it from Yugi's Deck to his own hand. Kaiba declares "Obelisk the Tormentor", and adds it to his hand.

Kaiba activates his Set "Return from the Different Dimension", paying half his LP (Kaiba: 1200 → 600) to Special Summon as many of his banished monsters as possible. Kaiba Special Summons his three "Blue-Eyes White Dragons", "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon", and "Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End" (3000/2500 each). Since all of these monsters were Summoned, the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" activates, reducing their ATKs by 2000 (3000 → 1000/2500 each).

Kaiba Tributes his three "Blue-Eyes White Dragons" to Tribute Summon "Template:Anime" (4000/4000) in Attack Position, with the effect of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" reducing its ATK by 2000 (4000 → 2000/4000). However, effects that alter ATK and DEF can only affect "Obelisk the Tormentor" until the End Phase.

During the Battle Phase, Kaiba activates the effect of "Obelisk the Tormentor" to Tribute "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon" and "Chaos Emperor Dragon" and increase its own ATK to Infinity until the End Phase (2000 → ∞/4000). Kaiba attacks "Slifer the Sky Dragon" with "Obelisk the Tormentor", but Yugi activates his Set "Zero Gravity" to change the battle positions of all face-up monsters on the field. "Obelisk the Tormentor" is unaffected by Spell/Trap cards and monster effects, so only "Slifer the Sky Dragon" is changed to Defense Position. The attack continues, and "Slifer the Sky Dragon" is destroyed. During the End Phase, the effects of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" and "Obelisk the Tormentor" expire ("Obelisk": ∞ → 4000/4000).

Turn 11: Yugi Muto
Yugi draws and subsequently activates "The True Name". He now must predict the name of the top card of his Deck and reveal it. If he is correct, he can add that card to his hand, and then he can add to his hand, or Special Summon, 1 DIVINE monster from his Deck. Otherwise, he must send that top card of his Deck to the Graveyard.

Yugi predicts the top card of his Deck is "Monster Reborn". He reveals it to be "Monster Reborn", and so adds it to his hand. He then also adds "Template:Anime" from his Deck to his hand. Yugi activates "Monster Reborn" to Special Summon "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning" from his Graveyard in Attack Position. Yugi then activates "Dark Magic Veil", paying 1000 LP (Yugi: 1800 → 800) to Special Summon "Template:Anime" (2800/2600) from his hand in Attack Position. Since "Dark Magician of Chaos" was Normal or Special Summoned, its effect activates, allowing Yugi to add "Monster Reborn" from his Graveyard to his hand, which he then activates to Special Summon "Dark Magician" from his Graveyard in Attack Position.

Yugi Tributes "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning", "Dark Magician of Chaos", and "Dark Magician" to Tribute Summon "The Winged Dragon of Ra" (?/?) in Attack Position. The ATK and DEF of "The Winged Dragon of Ra" each become equal to the total ATK and DEF of the Tributed monsters (? → 8300/? → 7100). Yugi activates the second effect of "The Winged Dragon of Ra", paying all but 1 of his LP (Yugi: 800 → 1) to increase his monster's ATK and DEF by that amount (8300 → 9099/7100 → 7899).

Yugi attacks and destroys "Obelisk the Tormentor" with "The Winged Dragon of Ra" (Kaiba: 600 → 0).
