Card Rulings:Ehren, Lightsworn Monk
OCG Rulings
- The monster effect "If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, before damage calculation: Shuffle that monster into the Deck" is a Trigger Effect. (It does not target.)[1]
- The monster effect "Shuffle that monster into the Deck" always activates when "Ehren, Lightsworn Monk" itself attacked a face-up Defense Position monster or a face-down Defense Position monster. (If the opponent's monster was in face-down Defense Position, it activates after that monster is flipped face-up.)[1]
- The monster effect "Once per turn, during your End Phase: Send the top 3 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard" is a Trigger Effect. (It does not target. It activates only once during the End Phase.)[1]
- It activates even if there are 2 or fewer cards remaining in your Deck. (In that case, send your entire Deck to the Graveyard.)[1]
- After a face-down Defense Position monster attacked by "Ehren, Lightsworn Monk" is flipped face-up, it is returned to the Deck by the effect of "Ehren, Lightsworn Monk". Consequently, if "Ehren, Lightsworn Monk" attacked a face-down Defense Position Flip monster, because it was flipped face-up on the field, after being returned to the Deck by the effect of "Ehren, Lightsworn Monk", its Trigger Effect activates.[2]
- If a face-down Defense Position Flip monster is attacked by "Ehren, Lightsworn Monk", the Trigger Effect activated after it was returned to the Deck by the effect of "Ehren, Lightsworn Monk" is treated as activating on the field. While the effect of "Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror" is applying, the effect of a DARK Flip monster returned to the Deck by the effect of "Ehren, Lightsworn Monk" is negated. Also, "Divine Wrath" can be activated in Chain to an effect activated after being returned to the Deck, and negate the activation of that Trigger Effect. However, even if "Divine Wrath" negates the activation of the Trigger Effect, the Flip monster remains in the Deck without being destroyed.[3]
- If the effect "If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, before damage calculation: Shuffle that monster into the Deck" of "Ehren, Lightsworn Monk" is applied to a "Plaguespreader Zombie" Special Summoned by its own effect, because "Plaguespreader Zombie" leaves the field, it is banished without being returned to the Deck.[4]
Previously Official Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been declared unofficial by Konami.[5] They were previously considered official and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules, or unless Konami has issued a ruling that says otherwise. References: [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] |
- The Defense Position monster attacked by "Ehren, Lightsworn Monk" is shuffled into its owner's Deck.
- “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” can use its effect to return face-up and face-down Defense Position monsters to the owner's Deck.
- When "Ehren, Lightsworn Monk's" effect is applied, Damage Calculation does not occur. Neither player receives Battle Damage to their Life Points.
- Note that “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” does not say “without flipping the monster face-up”. The effect of “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” is applied after the monster is flipped face-up, but before damage calculation. If the Defense Position monster was face-down and has a Flip Effect, the Flip Effect will activate and resolve normally after it is returned to its owner's Deck.
- The first effect of “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” is a Trigger Effect that can be chained to.
- If “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” attacks a face-up “Sasuke Samurai #4”, do the coin toss for “Sasuke Samurai #4” first, at the beginning of the Damage Step. If “Sasuke Samurai #4” destroys “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” with its effect, the effect of “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” is not applied. (If “Sasuke Samurai #4” was face-down, then you miss the chance to use its effect.)
- If “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” attacks “Dreamsprite”, both are mandatory Trigger Effects with the same timing, so they form a chain with “Dreamsprite” as Chain Link 2. “Dreamsprite” resolves first and, according to its effect, causes damage calculation to happen immediately. Since the effect of “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” only happens without damage calculation, the effect of “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” disappears.
- If “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” attacks a Defense Position “D.D. Warrior Lady”, the effect of “D.D. Warrior Lady” does not activate, because it has been returned to its owner's Deck by the effect of “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” before the time its effect would normally activate.
- If “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” attacks a face-down Defense Position monster while “Final Attack Orders” is active, the monster is not returned to its owner's Deck because it flips face-up and immediately shifts to Attack Position.
- “Nightmare Penguin” will activate its effect if attacked by “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk” while face-down. (Just like a Flip Effect.)
Lightsworn Monster Card Rulings
OCG Rulings
- The negating effect of "Alector, Sovereign of Birds" does not end during the End Phase. The effects of the targeted card remains negated during the entire turn.[15]
- Example: The effects of Spirit monsters, "Majestic Mech - Goryu", and "Jain, Lightsworn Paladin" will activate during the End Phase, but they will be negated and resolve without effect.
- If "Dimension Fortress Weapon" and "Macro Cosmos" are both active, the effects of "Jain, Lightsworn Paladin" and "Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress" still activate, but they resolve without effect.[16]
TCG Rulings
Konami Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Konami before the introduction of Problem-Solving Card Text. Since the introduction of the new text structure, individual card rulings for the TCG are no longer issued or actively maintained.[17] They have never been formally overturned as a whole and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules and do not contradict card text. |
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Dimension Fortress Weapon: In general, Lightsworn monsters can activate their effects while “Dimension Fortress Weapon” is on the field, but cards are not sent from the Deck to the Graveyard afterwards.
Upper Deck Entertainment Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been deemed unofficial by Konami.[18] They were previously considered official, but may or may not necessarily hold true nowadays. |
- If you do not have enough cards to send to the Graveyard remaining in your Deck when resolving the effect of a “Lightsworn” monster or “Judgment Dragon,” all cards remaining in your Deck are sent to the Graveyard. For example, if you control “Jain, Lightsworn Paladin” and its effect activates during your End Phase when you have only 1 card remaining in your Deck, that card will be sent to the Graveyard.[19]
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Charge of the Light Brigade: If the last Level 4 or lower "Lightsworn" monster remaining in your Deck is sent to the Graveyard when you activate "Charge of the Light Brigade", when it resolves, briefly show your Deck to your opponent to verify that no Level 4 or lower "Lightsworn" monsters remain in your Deck.
- Jenis, Lightsworn Mender: "Jenis, Lightsworn Mender's" effect only activates once during the End Phase, even if cards were sent from your Deck to the Graveyard by the effects of multiple "Lightsworn" monsters.
- Jenis, Lightsworn Mender: If "Jenis, Lightsworn Mender" is Summoned after card(s) are sent from your Deck to the Graveyard by the effect of a "Lightsworn" Monster, "Jenis, Lightsworn Mender's" effect still activates in the End Phase.
Out of Date
- If the effect of a “Lightsworn” monster to send cards from the top of your Deck to your Graveyard during the End Phase is negated by the effect of "Light and Darkness Dragon," that “Lightsworn” monster’s effect activates again in the same End Phase.[19][Out of Date 1]
- If an effect chained to a “Lightsworn” monster’s (or “Judgment Dragon’s”) effect to send cards from your Deck to the Graveyard during the End Phase that removes that “Lightsworn” monster from the field, the “Lightsworn” monster’s effect does not resolve.[19][Out of Date 2]
Notes
Out of Date
- ↑ The latest errata of "Lightsworn" monsters and "Judgment Dragon" state that this effect will only activate once per turn, so it will not activate again in this case.
- ↑ The latest errata of "Lightsworn" monsters and "Judgment Dragon" state that this effect will resolve with effect even if the card leaves the field before it resolves.
