This card's attack name is Destructive Spell: Death Ultima in the original manga and the original anime, but is called Chaos Scepter Blast in the English anime.

In episode 39, Yami Yugi uses this card during his Duel against Maximillion Pegasus. He Ritual Summons this card via "Dark Magic Ritual". After Pegasus Fusion Summons "Thousand-Eyes Restrict" and uses its effect to immobilize all of Yugi's monsters. Pegasus then activates the effect of "Thousand-Eyes Restrict" to equip this card onto it, but Yugi activates "Multiply" to turn his "Kuriboh" into a wall that would protect this card. This forces Pegasus's "Thousand-Eyes Restrict" to absorb the Kuriboh swarm instead of this card. "Thousand-Eyes Restrict" then gains the ATK of "Kuriboh". The Kuribohs then all explode which blinds "Thousand-Eyes Restrict" and negates its effects. Because of that, this card is now free from the effect of "Thousand-Eyes Restrict". This card then attacks and destroys Pegasus's "Thousand-Eyes Restrict", winning Yugi the duel.
- In the dubbed anime, Episode 2 contains a flash-forward to this monster's eventual appearance; during the first duel between Yami Yugi and Maximillion Pegasus, the scene of this monster attacking and destroying "Thousand-Eyes Restrict" plays alongside Pegasus's monologue about the Shadow Games.

In episode 118, Yami Yugi uses this card during his Duel against Noah Kaiba. He Ritual Summons this card via "Dark Magic Ritual". Yugi then uses "Dark Magician", "Dark Magician Girl" and this card to attack directly, but Noah activates "Chaos Barrier Field" to negate the attack and force this card and "Dark Magician Girl" to battle. This card then destroys "Dark Magician Girl". The Deck Master Ability of "Shinato, King of a Higher Plane" then activates, increasing Noah's Life Points by the damage Yugi took. The last effect of "Chaos Barrier Field" then ends the Battle Phase. Later this card attacks and destroys Noah's set "Otohime" but this activates the effect of "Otohime", switching Yugi's "Dark Magician" to Defense Position. Noah then activates "Vessel of Illusion" to Special Summon a "Spirit Token" with the same stat as "Otohime". Later "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" (which had 3000 ATK due to being equipped with "Flaming Fist") attacks and destroys this card. The Deck Master Ability of "Shinato, King of a Higher Plane" then activates, increasing Noah's Life Points by the damage Yugi took. The effect of "Flaming Fist" then activates, increasing Noah's Life Points by 500.

In episode 144, this card appears in a flashback Téa Gardner has when she remembers Noah turning Joey Wheeler to stone and that she claimed to Noah that he is a pitiful child with Noah claiming the goddess of victory comes to the chosen ones and he himself has chosen Yugi to help him, but Yugi refuses.

In episode 220, this card is shown when Yami Yugi is shown building his Deck for the Battle Ritual.

In episode 8, Yugi Muto consumes a magic apple while his Duel Armor is fused with "Dark Magician". This triggers a Dark Evolution, causing him to grow into "Magician of Black Chaos".

In episode 12, Yugi Muto summons this capsule against Alexander The Great's "Reshef the Dark Being". "Magician of Black Chaos" helps lift Yugi to avoid Reshef's "omni-directional laser assault."

In episode 168 and episode 179, this card can be seen in a display case among others as part of a replica of Yugi Muto's Deck.

In the non-canon duel World Championship 2013 Special: Mai vs. Yugi, Yugi Ritual Summons this card via "Black Magic Ritual" by Tributing "Dark Magician" and "Watapon". The same turn, "Magician of Black Chaos" attacks and destroys Mai's "Harpie's Pet Dragon". Later, "Magician of Black Chaos" is destroyed by battle by Mai's "Harpie Queen" (which had 2900 ATK due to being equipped with two copies of "Cyber Shield").
