Yoshi has a problem in his legs, and needs to be kept in a wheelchair. It is unknown what problem he has or how did he get like that, but he now needs to undergo a surgery. However, he has no courage to do it. So, he makes a promise with Crow: if Crow is able to win the [[D1GP]], Yoshi won't back out to his operation. Crow accepts it, and enters the D1GP, aiming to become the Riding Duel Emperor, for the sake of Yoshi.

An omake featured in [[Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's - Volume 004|volume 4]] revealed that Yoshi was supposed to have a twin brother named Tsune at first, but with [[Leo (manga)|Leo]] and [[Luna (manga)|Luna]] already in the manga, having two sets of twins was deemed unnecessary.
