History

  • In Egyptian culture, an obelisk (Greek: ὀβελίσκος [obeliskos], diminutive of ὀβελός [obelos], "needle") is a tall, narrow, four-sided, tapering monument which ends in a pyramidal top. Ancient obelisks were made of a single piece of stone (a monolith). The term stele (plural: stelae) is generally used for other monumental standings of inscribed, sculpted stones not of classic obelisk form.

Effects

One of the three Egyptian God cards, Obelisk the Tormentor is unusual in that its flavor text is printed as it's "effect". Despite this obstacle, however, effects have been given to it in its videogame appearances.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters IV: Battle of Great Duelist, Yu-Gi-Oh! The Sacred Cards and Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction:

Obelisk the Tormentor
DIVINE/Warrior/12/4000/4000
A monster that can wipe out all monsters on the foe's field. At the same time, it hits the foe with 4,000LP worth of damage. (Requires three tributes.)

Yu-Gi-Oh! Nightmare Troubadour:

Obelisk the Tormentor
DIVINE/Divine Beast/10/4000/4000
You must offer 3 Tributes to Tribute Summon this card. When this card is Special Summoned, it is sent to the Graveyard during the End Phase. While this card is face-up on the field, it cannot be targeted by Spells, Traps, or Monster effects. By offering 2 Monsters on your Field as Tributes, all Monsters on your opponent's Field are destroyed.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 2 and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 3:

Obelisk the Tormentor
DIVINE/Divine Beast/10/4000/4000
You must offer 3 Tributes to Tribute Summon this card. When this card is Special Summoned, it is sent to the Graveyard during the End Phase. While this card is face-up on the field, it cannot be targeted by Spells, Traps, or Monsters that designate a target. By offering 2 Monsters on your Field as Tributes, all Monsters on your opponent's Field are destroyed.

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's World Championship 2009: Stardust Accelerator:

Obelisk the Tormentor
DIVINE/Divine Beast/10/4000/4000
You must Tribute 3 monsters you control to Normal Summon this card. The Normal Summon of this card cannot be negated. When this card is Normal Summoned, a Spell, Trap, or Effect Monster Card cannot be activated. This card cannot be targeted by the effects of a Spell, Trap or Effect Monster. If this card is Special Summoned, it is sent to the Graveyard during the End Phase. You can Tribute 2 monsters to destroy all monsters your opponent controls. This card cannot declare an attack the turn this effect is activated.

In addition to the effects above, the "Thousand Rules Bible" book (Japan only) offered the following:

Giant God-Soldier of Obelisk
GOD/Illusionary God Animal/10/4000/4000
Requires you to sacrifice 3 monsters to Summon (this is treated as a Special Summon). Sacrifice 2 monsters: When this monster attacks during this turn, it attacks all of your opponent's monsters at the same time and does 4000 points of Direct Damage to your opponent. This monster cannot be the target of monster, Spell or Trap effects.

Note that Obelisk was also released in the 6th Japanese Booster of Yu-Gi-Oh! Dungeon Dice Monsters. Note also that Kazuki Takahashi said in an interview that Obelisk's effect permits him to get infinite Attack when you tribute 2 monsters.

Misc.

  • The legal version of this card is obelisk as he appeared during the "Dawn of the Duel

" ("Millenium World" in the manga) arc.

  • This is the only Egyptian God to not make an "in-duel" appearance in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.
  • In December of 2008, V-Jump Subscribers in Japan received a Tournament Legal Version of this card aptly named Great Divine Soldier of Obelisk, with Alternate Art (more specifically, the "Ancient" Obelisk appeared in the manga) by Kazuki Takahashi bearing his signature. Upon its release, it will mark the beginning of the Divine Attribute and Divine Beast type in the playable game.
  • This is the only Egyptian God Card to have a predetermined ATK and DEF value.
  • In the Japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, this card, and the other Egyptian God Cards are in English, while still using the Japanese name
  • This is the only God Card in Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series to not have its named altered or changed.
  • In the Japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, Defense is misspelled as Difence on this, and other Egyptian God Cards.
  • Since the Egyptian God Cards are color-coded by their skin color, Obelisk the Tormentor is the only blue-colored card that is not a Ritual Monster.
  • The effect monster version of this card is one of the few cards in the game that does not have an 8-digit input code in the bottom left corner and no border around the photo.
