"Snake-Eye" (スネークアイ Sunēkuai) is an archetype of FIRE monsters introduced in Duelist Nexus, before receiving direct support in the next set Age of Overlord.

This archetype is related to the "Diabellstar" and "Sinful Spoils" archetypes.

Design[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The name of the theme is derived from the snake eyes—a roll of two dice, with both resulting in one—represented in the theme through its Level 1 monsters, while also being an allusion to the eye-like gem appearing in all of their artworks ("Sinful Spoils of Subversion - Snake-Eye").

The individual names of the Level 1 monsters are inspired by the Lithuanian tale of Eglė the Queen of Serpents, in which the Serpent Queen's children were transformed into oak, ash, birch, and aspen trees.

Appearance[edit]

"Snake-Eye" monsters share the common element of a glowing red eye gem surrounded by colored flames and some kind of rock-like material to form their main body.

Playing style[edit]

"Snake-Eye" is a theme focused around Level 1 FIRE monsters and Special Summoning monsters from the Spell & Trap Zone treated as Continuous Spell Cards. The bulk of its monster line-up is made of Level 1 FIRE Pyro monsters that feature various consistency effects as well as a shared effect to send themselves and another card the player controls to Special Summon a "Snake-Eye" monster from the hand or Deck, excluding that respective card. The boss of the theme is "Snake-Eyes Flamberge Dragon", a Level 8 FIRE Dragon monster able to place any monster on the field or in either GY on the field as a Continuous Spell Card to its owner's field. On top of this, during the opponent's turn, it is able to take a monster treated as a Continuous Spell and Special Summon it to the field of its controller, leading to passive snatching of the opponent's stronger monsters.

The theme is supported by three Spell Cards and one Trap Card primarily. The original card for the theme, "Sinful Spoils of Subversion - Snake-Eye", is a basic Spell Card able to place a monster on either side of the field to the Spell & Trap Zone as a Continuous Spell. The Field Spell Card, "Divine Temple of the Snake-Eye", places a "Snake-Eye" monster onto the field as a Continuous Spell from hand, Deck, or GY, gives all Level 1 FIRE monsters a sizable stat gain of 1100 ATK, and is able to Special Summon a monster treated as a Continuous Spell to your field once per turn when the opponent Normal or Special Summons a monster. As well, the final Spell Card, "Original Sinful Spoils - Snake-Eye", is able to summon any Level 1 FIRE monster from the hand or Deck and also can banish itself to add any Level 1 FIRE monster from the Deck to the hand at the added cost of placing a "Snake-Eye" or "Diabellstar" monster at the bottom of the deck, cementing a further connection between the two themes. The Trap Card of the theme, "Startling Stare of the Snake-Eyes", does much of the same things the rest of the theme can do such as placing monsters in the backrow and Special Summoning them back, but the user needs to have "Snake-Eye" monsters on the field whose Levels total to 2 or more.

The theme benefits immensely from various Level 1, FIRE, and Pyro support cards, such as "Bonfire", "One for One", as well as the wave of "Volcanic" support from Duelist Pack: Duelists of Explosion. "Kurikara Divincarnate", a powerful board breaker, can be easily searched by both "Snake-Eye Ash" the GY effect of "Original Sinful Spoils - Snake-Eye". For another card that supports the theme well, there is the LINK-2 monster "Flametongue the Blazing Magical Blade", which protects the owner's face-up Spells/Traps as well as adding banished FIRE monsters back to the hand.

Sample combo[edit]

The "Snake-Eye" strategy can get going by simply Summoning "Snake-Eye Ash", whether by Normal Summon or a card that can Special Summon it from elsewhere (i.e. "Original Sinful Spoils - Snake-Eye" or "One for One").

The below combo focuses on setting up several points of interaction, as well as follow-up plays from "Ash" and "Snake-Eye Oak" after "Snake-Eyes Flamberge Dragon" is sent to the GY. It is capable of playing through "Droll & Lock Bird", as it would only prevent "Snake-Eyes Poplar" from searching for a "Snake-Eye" Spell/Trap after "Ash" searches for it.

  1. Placing "I:P Masquerena" in the Spell & Trap Zone with "Snake-Eyes Flamberge Dragon" so "Flamberge Dragon" can Special Summon it during the opponent's turn for a Link Summon (usually "Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess" for monster negates or "S:P Little Knight" for monster removal).
  2. "Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames" in the GY to destroy one of the player's FIRE monsters and one of the opponent's monsters to Special Summon itself after the opponent Summons a monster.
  3. "Amphibious Swarmship Amblowhale" can act as both follow-up and removal, which can be triggered by the effect of "Promethean Princess".
Opening: "Snake-Eye Ash"
  1. Summon "Snake-Eye Ash".
  2. Activate "Ash" to search for "Snake-Eyes Poplar".
  3. Activate "Poplar" to Special Summon itself.
  4. Activate "Poplar" to search for any "Snake-Eye" Spell/Trap.
  5. Link Summon "Linkuriboh" using "Poplar"
  6. Activate "Poplar" to place itself in the Spell & Trap Zone.
  7. Activate "Ash" to send itself and "Poplar" to the GY to Special Summon "Snake-Eye Oak".
  8. Activate "Oak" to Special Summon "Ash" or "Poplar" from the GY.
  9. Activate "Oak" to send itself and "Linkuriboh" to the GY to Special Summon "Snake-Eyes Flamberge Dragon".
  10. Link Summon "I:P Masquerena" using "Flamberge Dragon" and the monster "Oak" Special Summoned earlier.
  11. Activate "Flamberge Dragon" to Special Summon two of "Oak", "Ash", or "Poplar" from the GY.
  12. Link Summon "Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames" using "Masquerena" and one of the Level 1 monsters.
  13. Activate "Promethean Princess" to Special Summon "Flamberge Dragon" from the GY.
  14. Activate "Flamberge Dragon" to place "Masquerena" from the GY to the Spell & Trap Zone.
  15. Link Summon "Amphibious Swarmship Amblowhale" using "Promethean Princess" and the other Level 1 monster.
Ends on: "Amphibious Swarmship Amblowhale" and "Snake-Eyes Flamberge Dragon" in the Monster Zones + "I:P Masquerena" in the Spell & Trap Zone + "Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames" in the GY

Weaknesses[edit]

  • Due to the archetype being reliant on using Graveyard to recur resources and facilitate grind game, anti-GY floodgates such as "Necrovalley", "Macro Cosmos", or "Dimension Shifter" can stop most of the grind game the deck has to offer.
  • As the Deck is focused on monster interruption and mostly lacks interaction with Spell and Trap Card unless using external staples, the deck is ironically weak against Chain Burn Decks that can easily exploit the Deck's swarming capabilities to deal game-ending damage in a single turn with cards such as "Ceasefire" or "Just Desserts".
