There are many occasions in which a card, in the anime, may contradict its lore in the anime. These are usually due to errors on the writers' part.
Yu-Gi-Oh!
- Insect Armor with Laser Cannon - Equip only to an Insect-Type monster. It gains 1500 ATK.
- This card's written lore made it look similar to its OCG lore.
- Dragon Capture Jar - During your Main Phase, you can activate this card from your hand. After activation, you can Special Summon this card as an Effect Monster (100 ATK / 200 DEF). While this card is face-up on the field, all Dragon-Type monsters disappear. This card gains the total DEF of all monsters that disappeared by this card's effect while it is treated as an Effect Monster.
- Reason for contradiction: Pegasus was able to play this card from his hand as a monster even though it's a Trap in both versions of the anime. These effects were also used in the anime in Pegasus' Duel with Yugi and Kaiba.
- Spellbinding Circle - Select 1 monster. It loses 700 ATK, cannot attack or change its Battle Position, and its effect(s) is negated. When that monster is destroyed, destroy this card.
- Reason for contradiction: Despite this card's anime lore being similar to this card's first OCG lore, this card decreases the target's ATK by 700 every time it is affected.
- Shine Palace - Activate only by sending 1 "Toon World" you control to the Graveyard. This card is treated as "Toon World" while face-up on the field, and all LIGHT monsters you control gain 500 ATK.
- Reason for contradiction: This card's anime lore was written in a way that it looked similar to the OCG lore.
- Time Machine - When a monster is sent to the Graveyard as a result of battle, reduce the Battle Damage to 0 an return that monster to the field in the same position it was in when destroyed (This is not treated as a Summon.) with all card effects on it from the start of the turn.
- Reason for contradiction: Neither Joey nor Keith took any damage when this card was activated. Also when "Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon" was returned to the field, it retained the boost it got from "Dragon Nails".
- Magic Jammer - Discard 1 card. Negate all Lingering Spell Card Effects and destroy all Spell Cards on the field.
- Reason for contradiction: This card's anime lore was written in a way that it looked similar to the OCG lore. The anime effect of "Magical Hats" was a Normal Spell Card with a Lingering effect that lasts until all the hats are destroyed and Keith activated this card on his Draw Phase instead of when "Magical Hats" was activated.
- Roulette Spider - Pay half your Life Points. Spin a wheel centered around the monster with the highest ATK on the field. After it stops spinning, that monster must attack in the direction "Roulette Spider" is pointing.
- Reason for contradiction: Joey payed Life Points to activate this card despite that the written anime lore didn't say this.
- Alligator's Sword Dragon - This card can attack your opponent directly if the only monsters they control are set monsters, EARTH monsters, WATER monsters, or FIRE monsters.
- Reason for contradiction: Although this card's written anime lore is the same as the OCG lore, Joey was still able to use this card's effect even though Mako's monsters were set.
- Mystical Refpanel - Activate only when your opponent activates a Spell Card. You may negate the effect of that card. At anytime, you can select and activate one of the following effects.
● Change the target of the Spell Card to another appropriate target. If the Spell Card was an Equip Spell Card, destroy it on the End Phase.
● Use the negated card from the Graveyard as you or your opponent's card.- Reason for contradiction: This card was saved for when Yugi needed it sometimes and this card could also affect Equip Spell Cards. Also Yugi could use "Meteor of Destruction" on either player with this card, but in the end he chose himself as he didn't want to see Joey die. Also "Mask of Brutality" was gone after "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" destroyed "Rogue Doll".
- Meteor of Destruction - You must pay 500 Life Points to activate this effect. Inflict 1000 points of damage to your opponent's Life Points. Then you may select 1 monster on your opponent's side of the field. The selected monster attack you.
- Reason for contradiction: This card's anime lore was written in a way that it looked similar to the OCG lore.
- Dark Sanctuary - Activate only when a "Dark Necrofear" is sent to your Graveyard. The Ghost of Dark Sanctuary appears. During each of your Main Phases, Tribute 1 monster or destroy this card. Your Monster Card Zones are also treated as Spell and Trap Card Zones.
- Reason for contradiction: Yami Bakura mentioned this even though it wasn't written in the anime lore. Also after Yami Bakura Tributed "Jowgen the Spiritualist", he set "Dark Spirit of the Silent" which he couldn't have done on the End Phase.
- Cold Wave - This card can only be activated during your Main Phase 1. Until your next turn, you and your opponent cannot play or Set any Spell or Trap Cards.
- Reason for contradiction: When Crump played the card, he played it after summoning "Giant Red Seasnake", but in the real game that would be impossible because this card can only be activated at the start of the controller's Main Phase 1 and nowhere else.
- Cyber Jar - FLIP: Destroy all monsters on the field, then both players reveal the top 5 cards from their Decks, then Special Summon all revealed Level 4 or lower monsters in, face-up Attack Position, face-up Defense Position, or face-down Defense Position, also add any remaining cards to their hand. (If either player has less than 5 cards in their Deck, reveal as many as possible.)
- Reason for contradiction: This card's effect was the same as the real card in the first two Duels it was used in. However in Kaiba's Duel with Leichter and Yami Yugi's Duel with Noah, the Defense Position monsters summoned by this card's effect were face-up instead of face-down.
- Dark Paladin - episode 134 only. This card cannot be Special Summoned except by Fusion Summon. This card gains 500 ATK for each Dragon-Type monster on the field.
- Reason for contradiction: In this card's anime debut, it only gained ATK from the Dragons on the field.
- Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon - Cannot be summoned unless you control a face-up "Toon World". This card cannot attack the turn it is Special Summoned. You must pay 500 Life Points to declare an attack with this monster. If "Toon World" on the field is destroyed, destroy this card. This card can attack your opponent directly, unless they control a Toon Monster. If they do control one, this card must target a Toon Monster for its attacks.
- Rope of Life - When a monster(s) is destroyed (either by battle or by card effect) and sent to your Graveyard: Discard your entire hand (min.1), then target 1 of those monsters; Special Summon it, and if you do, it gains 800 ATK.
- Reason for contradiction: Rebecca was able to activate this card when "Luster Dragon #2" was destroyed by the effect of "Double Cloth Armor" even though it wasn't destroyed in battle.
- Guardian Eatos - This card must first be Summoned while you control a face-up "Celestial Sword - Eatos". If you have no monsters in your Graveyard, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. If this card has a card equipped to it, once per turn you can send one Equip Spell Card equipped to this card to the Graveyard to remove from play cards from the top of your opponent's Graveyard up until a non-Monster Card is revealed. This card gains ATK equal to the total ATK of the monsters removed by this effect, until the end of the Battle Phase.
- Reason for contradiction: Despite what the written anime lore says, "Eatos" lost the boost it got from its effect when its attack failed to destroy "Dark Magician". Also Yami was able to bring "Eatos" back via "Monster Reborn" even though he didn't have "Celestial Sword - Eatos".
- Golden Castle of Stromberg - During each of your Standby Phases, send half the cards in your Deck to the Graveyard. If you cannot, destroy this card.
● Once per turn, during your Main Phase 1, Special Summon 1 random Level 4 or lower monster from your hand or Deck in face-up Attack Position.
● You cannot Normal Summon monsters.
● All monsters Special Summoned by this card's effect and all monsters your opponent controls must attack, if able.
● When an opponent's monster declares an attack, destroy that monster, and inflict damage to your opponent equal to half of that monster's ATK.
● This card cannot be destroyed by the effects of other Spells, Traps, or Effect Monsters.
● Your opponent must pay this card's maintenance cost.- Reason for contradiction: Despite what the written anime lore says, Leon was able to summon "Forest Wolf" from his hand which should have been impossible as Leon can only summon monsters from his Deck.
- Soul Shield - Activate only by paying half your Life Points when a monster you control would be destroyed by battle. It is not destroyed by this battle and you take no Battle Damage from this battle. At the end of the Damage Step, end the Battle Phase.
- Reason for contradiction: Yugi was able to use this card to prevent "Dark Magician" from destroying "Blockman" and inflicting piercing damage despite what the written anime lore says.
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light
- Reason for contradiction: This card's summon was a Normal Summon in the movie as Pegasus had to apply the effect of "Ultimate Offering" in order to summon it.
- Toon Summoned Skull - Cannot be summoned unless you control a face-up "Toon World".
- Reason for contradiction: Same reason as reason for "Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon" in the movie.
- Pyramid of Light - All God Cards on the field are removed from play. If this face-up card is removed from your side of the field, destroy "Andro Sphinx" and "Sphinx Teleia" on your side of the field and remove them from play.
- Reason for contradiction: Despite the written anime lore, this card still retained its TCG/OCG effect in the anime as "Andro Sphinx" and "Sphinx Teleia" were both destroyed when Yami Yugi finally destroyed this card.
