"Shark" (シャーク Shāku) is an series used by Reginald Kastle/Nash in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime and manga. Most of them are Level 3 or 4 WATER and/or Fish. Many have swarm effects, allowing easy Summoning of Rank 3-5 monsters. They are only supported as an archetype in the anime and manga.
+
"Shark" (シャーク Shāku) is an archetype primarily consisting of WATER and/or Fish monsters. They were used by Reginald Kastle/Nash in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime and manga. There is a sub-archetype; "Shark Drake".

"Number 32: Shark Drake" appears as a character in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Arena.
+
While having support in its original appearance in the anime, this theme only received its first support in the OCG/TCG several years later in Rage of the Abyss.

Members
+
True membership in the "Shark" archetype is primarily indicated by their relations to their user in Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL, Reginald Kastle/Nash. Monsters such as "Scrap Shark" receive support from this archetype's cards, but are thematically disjointed, because they are unrelated to the character. Two old Extra Deck monsters, "Deepsea Shark" and "Man-eating Black Shark", are not valid targets for "Shark" support, as their Japanese names do not contain 「シャーク」, but support for the archetype currently only applies to Main Deck monsters in any case. Said support is applied only to Fish "Shark" monsters, which comprises every Main Deck monster with "Shark" in its English and Japanese name, with the exception of "Corroding Shark".

Nash has a "Number 10X" ace monster in the anime, "Number 101: Silent Honor ARK", which in turn has a "Number C10X" form, "Number C101: Silent Honor DARK". They take the appearance of a large submarine spacecraft and an armored lance-wielding pilot, respectively. In Duelist Pack: Duelists of the Abyss, the two monsters were given game-original counterparts: "N.As.H. Knight" and "CXyz N.As.Ch. Knight", both one Rank higher than their base forms.

Xyz Armor & Full Armored

+
Armored Xyz (archetype)
+
All "Xyz Armor" monsters and "Full Armored" monsters are related to Nash's anime monsters; they are all related to each other through the "Armored Xyz" Spell and Trap Cards, which equip Xyz Monsters to other Xyz Monsters, and consist of combined forms of "Black Ray Lancer".

Playing style
Playing style
"Shark" monsters (except for "Scrap Shark", "Shark Fortress" and "Corroding Shark") are all WATER. "Xyz Remora" can almost instantaneously summon "Number 32: Shark Drake".
+
Shark as a strategy is focused on swarming the field to perform Xyz Summons of Rank 3-5 WATER Xyz Monsters. "Shark" monsters primarily support WATER and/or Fish monsters to advance their game plan, and benefit from non-series WATER/Fish support.

A few of these monsters, notably "Metabo-Shark" and "Scrap Shark", sport decent to high ATK at low Levels, allowing them to start out as beaters when Summoned. This lets them battle outside the Extra Deck. Their effects, as mentioned, allow them to manipulate their Levels between 3 and 5, allowing them to Summon Rank 3 to 5 Xyz Monsters quite easily.
+
The key Shark monsters that enable the swarming of the Shark strategy are the Shark pairs "Left-Hand Shark" and "Right-Hand Shark", "Buzzsaw Shark" and "Lantern Shark", and "Abyss Shark" and "Crystal Shark".
+
* "Left-Hand" and "Right-Hand" can Special Summon themselves from the hand or GY, the latter can search the former when Normal Summoned, and both provide protection to an Xyz Monster summoned using them as material.
+
* "Buzzsaw" and "Lantern" can Special Summon Fish or WATER monsters from the Deck or hand, and can also be used as Level 3 or 5 monsters to summon WATER Xyz monsters. However, they lock the player into only summoning Xyz Monsters from the Extra Deck for the turn.
+
* "Abyss" and "Crystal" can Special Summon themselves from the hand or GY, the former can search the latter if Special Summoned, and both can be used as Level 3 or 4 monsters for "Number" Xyz Monsters. However, they lock the player into only summoning WATER Xyz Monsters from the Extra Deck for the turn.

Seeing as this archetype is built for aggression and swarming, a fast-paced Deck can be built using "Shark Stickers", "Shark Cruiser" (although this card takes a bit more prediction and a lot more luck), and most notably "Hammer Shark" to swarm the field. It is actually quite easy to pull combos with this Deck. The most basic one is to Normal Summon "Hammer Shark", using its effect to Special Summon any Level 3 or lower WATER monster, then Special Summoning "Shark Stickers". "Double-Fin Shark" is an excellent card to make an instant Rank 4 Xyz (though only WATER).
+
Utilizing these monsters, and some additional external extenders like "Xyz Remora", "Xyz Slidolphin", "Tenyi Spirit - Shthana", "Silent Angler", "Silent Sea Nettle", or "Ready Fusion", the player can rapidly swarm their board with Level 4/5 WATER and/or Fish monsters, and make strong WATER Xyz Monsters that require such monsters as materials.

Another rather potent combo is to use the effect of "Bahamut Shark" to Special Summon "Number 47: Nightmare Shark" which can attach another Shark monster like "Shark Stickers" to itself despite being Summoned with no Xyz Materials, and thus gain its rather useful effect too. Since this Deck focuses on swarming the field and being aggressive, cards like "Sea Lord's Amulet" can prevent your WATER monsters from being destroyed by your opponents card effects. Another good combo to maintain field presence is to use the effect of "Bahamut Shark" to Special Summon a Rank 3 WATER Xyz monster and then Xyz Summon again to summon "Full Armored Black Ray Lancer" and activate "Sea Lord's Amulet" to prevent "Full Armored Black Ray Lancer" from being destroyed and let "Full Armored Black Ray Lancer" attack your opponent's monsters to destroy their Spell/Trap Cards. One should remember that the effect of "Bahamut Shark" only applies to the rest of the turn when restricting its attack. "Saber Shark" can help easily to Summon Rank 5 Xyz monsters like "Number 73: Abyss Splash" and "Number 94: Crystalzero," if one needs to defeat more powerful monsters, while another option is "Shark Fortress," which protects your own monsters and can allow any monster to attack twice during the Battle Phase. "Metabo-Shark" is good due to its effect of bringing back two Fish monsters from the Graveyard and adding them to your Deck.
+
Because of the restrictions that Shark monster effects apply to Extra Deck summoning, Shark Decks can typically only make WATER Xyz monsters on their setup turns. However, there are many high-quality WATER Xyz Monsters that the Deck can make. These include:
+
* "Bahamut Shark", who can Special Summon a Rank 3 or lower WATER monster from the Extra Deck; typically, the target will be "Toadally Awesome", who provides an omni-negate and recovery.
+
* "Xyz Armor Fortress" can Summon itself on top of a Rank 3 or 4 monster, usually "Bahamut Shark", to search out both "Armored Xyz" and "Full-Armored Xyz", enabling the player the ability to go into "Full Armored Crystalzero Lancer" and "Full Armored Dark Knight Lancer", with the latter being able to add back "Xyz Remora" from GY to extend combos or easily end the game with "Armored Xyz" and attach an opponent's monster to it as material.
+
* "Number 4: Stealth Kragen", who has a Quick Effect monster destruction, an Attribute change effect that becomes a floodgate if used with "Gozen Match", and the ability to float into "Stealth Kragen Spawn", who can also destroy monsters as a Quick Effect, and can float back into "Stealth Kragen".
+
* "Abyss Dweller", a blanket floodgate against GY effects.
+
* "Valiant Shark Lancer" and "Full Armored Crystalzero Lancer", who provide more monster destructions and Spell Speed 1 negates.
+
* "N.As.H. Knight" and "CXyz N.As.Ch. Knight", who provides Quick Effect non-targeting non-destruction removal and access to "Number 10X" monsters.

One in-Deck "boss monster", introduced in Cosmo Blazer, is "Hyper-Ancient Shark Megalodon" who sports the highest original ATK in the entire archetype (2900). Its effect destroys a monster when it inflicts Battle Damage, further pushing the aggressiveness of the archetype. The true boss monster is seen to be "Number C32: Shark Drake Veiss" whose effect drops an monster's ATK and DEF to 0, while "Number 32: Shark Drake" brings a monster back that it destroyed by battle and lowers its ATK by 1000, while also allowing it to attack again. "Number 47: Nightmare Shark" is also useful due to its effect that allows a WATER monster to attack directly, allowing both a large amount of damage, and the triggering of "Megalodon's" effect. As such, this archetype can be used very aggressively to beat the opponent down. Another technique to summon "Number C32: Shark Drake Veiss," is by using a "Rank-Up-Magic" Spell card on "Number 47: Nightmare Shark," rather than using "Shark Drake" as Xyz Material. Though not Shark monsters themselves, "Number 101: Silent Honor ARK" is an excellent addition for cheap monster removal, with its evolved form being able to be teched in as well, "Number C101: Silent Honor DARK."
+
The deck benefits from a wide variety of WATER and Fish support. These include "Beautunaful Princess", who can Special Summon "Buzzsaw Shark" or "Lantern Shark" directly from the Deck, "White Mirror", a GY revival Spell that also searches, and "White Howling", a Trap that negates all of the opponent's Spells for a turn.

Most "Shark" monsters' effects activate only when they are Normal Summoned, so to fully utilize them, you can tech in "Double Summon" or "Ultimate Offering" (though the latter is now Forbidden) to trigger these effects. By doing this, you can Tribute Summon "Hyper-Ancient Shark Megalodon" more easily. "Water Hazard" can be excellent, as the deck can already swarm quite quickly, and can essentially cut down on a turn for Xyz Summoning, as well as expanding your options if you don't have either "Hammer Shark" or "Shark Stickers" in your hand.

While having support in its original appearance in the anime, this theme only received its first support in the OCG/TCG several years later in Rage of the Abyss.

Members[edit]

Number 10X

Nash has a "Number 10X" ace monster in the anime, "Number 101: Silent Honor ARK", which in turn has a "Number C10X" form, "Number C101: Silent Honor DARK". They take the appearance of a large submarine spacecraft and an armored lance-wielding pilot, respectively. In Duelist Pack: Duelists of the Abyss, the two monsters were given game-original counterparts: "N.As.H. Knight" and "CXyz N.As.Ch. Knight", both one Rank higher than their base forms.

Mythyrian Numbers

The two Mythyrian Numbers associated with Nash and Marin are "Number 73: Abyss Splash" and "Number 94: Crystalzero", and both were primarily used by Nash in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime. Also, each of them received a Main Deck "Shark" counterpart.

Xyz Armor & Full Armored

All "Xyz Armor" monsters and "Full Armored" monsters are related to Nash's anime monsters; they are all related to each other through the "Armored Xyz" Spell and Trap Cards, which equip Xyz Monsters to other Xyz Monsters, and consist of combined forms of "Black Ray Lancer".

Playing style[edit]

Shark as a strategy is focused on swarming the field to perform Xyz Summons of Rank 3-5 WATER Xyz Monsters. "Shark" monsters primarily support WATER and/or Fish monsters to advance their game plan, and benefit from non-series WATER/Fish support.

The key Shark monsters that enable the swarming of the Shark strategy are the Shark pairs "Left-Hand Shark" and "Right-Hand Shark", "Buzzsaw Shark" and "Lantern Shark", and "Abyss Shark" and "Crystal Shark".

 • "Left-Hand" and "Right-Hand" can Special Summon themselves from the hand or GY, the latter can search the former when Normal Summoned, and both provide protection to an Xyz Monster summoned using them as material.
 • "Buzzsaw" and "Lantern" can Special Summon Fish or WATER monsters from the Deck or hand, and can also be used as Level 3 or 5 monsters to summon WATER Xyz monsters. However, they lock the player into only summoning Xyz Monsters from the Extra Deck for the turn.
 • "Abyss" and "Crystal" can Special Summon themselves from the hand or GY, the former can search the latter if Special Summoned, and both can be used as Level 3 or 4 monsters for "Number" Xyz Monsters. However, they lock the player into only summoning WATER Xyz Monsters from the Extra Deck for the turn.

Because of the restrictions that Shark monster effects apply to Extra Deck summoning, Shark Decks can typically only make WATER Xyz monsters on their setup turns. However, there are many high-quality WATER Xyz Monsters that the Deck can make. These include:

The deck benefits from a wide variety of WATER and Fish support. These include "Beautunaful Princess", who can Special Summon "Buzzsaw Shark" or "Lantern Shark" directly from the Deck, "White Mirror", a GY revival Spell that also searches, and "White Howling", a Trap that negates all of the opponent's Spells for a turn.

Notes[edit]

 1. a b "Double Shark" and "Double Fin Shark" are both based on conjoined twins, the former along the frontal plane while the latter along the sagittal plane, and they are also depicted in the exact same pose.
 2. a b In the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime, "Spear Shark" and "Saber Shark" have identical effects, and share both ATK and weapon-based heads.
 3. Despite not having "Shark" in its name, it is based on "Big Jaws", a Fish monster played by Reginald Kastle/Nash and inspired by a real shark. Also, it mentions "Shark" in its effect and is meant to synergy with the "Shark" monster released in its same set, like the other members.
 4. Despite not having "Shark" in its name, it is a Fish monster played by Reginald Kastle/Nash and inspired by a real shark. Also, in both the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime and manga, it is often used in conjunction with "Shark" monsters or as material to Summon "Shark" Xyz Monsters.
