However, by removing every Black Feather Counter, it can reduce the ATK of an opponent's monster by 700 points for each, while inflicting an equivalent amount of damage to them. This is different from the original anime version of the same card, as "Black-Winged Dragon" instead simply prevented all effect damage its controller would take by losing an equal amount of ATK. The controller could then reset the ATK to its original value of 2800 to reduce an opposing monster's ATK by the amount "Black-Winged Dragon" regained, with no effect damage being inflicted. It was later changed to ostensibly match the OCG effect (although often was used in a manner inconsistent with it). | It debuted in The Shining Darkness with "Black-Winged Dragon", which gains one each time its controller would take effect damage and blocks that damage, but loses 700 ATK for each counter it has on itself. A Black Feather Counter (
It debuted in The Shining Darkness with "Black-Winged Dragon", which gains one each time its controller would take effect damage and blocks that damage, but loses 700 ATK for each counter it has on itself.
Several years later in Duelist Pack: Legend Duelist 3 came out "Blackwing - Auster the South Wind", a support card that places a number of Black Feather Counters on 1 "Black-Winged Dragon" equal to the number of cards the opponent controls.
Finally, Darkwing Blast introduced 3 more cards that utilize Black Feather Counters:
- "Black-Winged Assault Dragon" places 1 Black Feather Counter on itself whenever an opponent's monster's activated effect resolved, and if successful doing so, inflicts 700 damage to the opponent. During the opponent's turn, if the card has 4 Black Feather Counter or more, it can Tribute itself to destroy all cards on the field.
- "Black Feather Whirlwind" is a Continuous Spell Card that allow to remove 1 Black Feather Counter on the field to prevent 1 DARK monster from being destroyed.
- "Black Shadow Squall" is a Counter Trap Card that allow to remove 1 Black Feather Counter on the field to negate the activation of a Spell/Trap Card and destroy it.
