A counter (カウンター Kauntā) is a type of counter that does not have a specific name. Unlike most counters, these counters are simply named "counter".

These counters are almost always placed on a card by itself, with two exceptions: "B.E.F. Zelos" (which only places counters on cards that can already place counters on themselves) and "Magic Reflector".

Generic counters are most commonly associated with "B.E.S." monsters, which use them to represent the spaceships' shields. They cannot be destroyed by battle, but lose a counter (representing a shield) whenever they battle; if they battle without a counter, they are destroyed after that battle.

Counters placed by "Magic Reflector" are unusual, as they can be placed on cards that do not normally place counters on themselves. In some video games, these counters are referred to as Gardna Counters and have a different design.

There is a "Counter" card that officially represents generic counters; its design is based on "B.E.S." monsters.

Magic Reflector

Counters placed by "Magic Reflector" often have a different design to other counters, due to being able to be placed on cards other than the card placing them.
