Téa Gardner and Yugi Muto playing Capsule Monsters

Capsule Monsters is a board game appearing in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters anime.

It is partly based on Capsule Monster Chess from the manga. The real world game Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters Collectible Figure Game is based on this game.

Rules[edit]

The anime does not divulge much of the rules.

  • The game is played on a board, divided into squares.[1]
  • Monsters are concealed inside capsules and revealed as players use them.[1]
  • To win the game, a player must capture their opponent's symbol piece.[1]
  • Monsters have Attack Points.[2]
  • Monsters are capable of taking damage.[2]
  • Monsters have different Attributes.
    • Certain Attributes are strengthened in certain parts of the board. e.g. Wood monsters are stronger when they are in the forest.[2]
    • Attributes are strengthened when battling an opposing Attribute. e.g. Fire monsters are strong against Wood monsters.[2]
  • Some monsters have special abilities, such as "Happy Lover", who can heal injured allies.[2]

History[edit]

The game board in the Pyramid of Alexander

The World of Capsule Monsters is a parallel world, where monsters from the game are real. It operates under similar mechanics, such as monsters having different abilities and being strengthened by the Attribute in certain circumstances. Yami Yugi theorized that the game was invented by someone who had been to the World of Capsule Monsters.[2]

A map of the World of Capsule Monsters exists in the Pyramid of Alexander, which was used to play an ancient version of the Capsule Monsters game. Stepping on the map transports an individual to the world. This happened to Solomon Muto, who was soon followed by Yugi Muto and his friends. Inside this world, they played a real-life version of the game.[2]

Pieces[edit]

All the pieces featured in the anime are also cards in Duel Monsters, with the exception of the symbol pieces.[1]
