TCG Rulings

- CLARIFICATION:
- The effect of “Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame” activates when monsters are destroyed and sent to the Graveyard at the end of the Damage Step. This is the same timing as the effects of cards like “Hydrogeddon,” “Blue Thunder T-45,” “Goyo Guardian,” and “Elemental Hero Flame Wingman” [sic].
- In order for its effect to activate, “Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame” must be face-up on the field when the monster it destroyed by battle is sent to the Graveyard. This means:
- If Shura and the other monster destroy each other by battle (equal ATK), Shura’s effect does not activate.
- If Shura is destroyed by a Flip Effect like “Man-Eater Bug,” Shura’s effect does not activate.
- If Shura is flipped face-down after damage calculation by a card effect, such as “Desertapir,” Shura’s effect does not activate.
- If Shura is removed from play [sic] by battling “D.D. Warrior,” Shura’s effect does not activate.
- If Shura is destroyed by an effect after the monster it destroyed by battle was sent to the Graveyard, such as “Michizure,” Shura’s effect DOES activate, and you can Special Summon a monster.
- NOTE: These rules also apply to any other monster with the text “When this card destroys an opponent’s monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard….” (Examples: “Hydrogeddon,” “Goyo Guardian,” or “Elemental Hero Flame Wingman” [sic].)
- These rules do NOT apply to monsters with the text “When this card destroys an opponent’s monster by battle….” (but does not specify “and sends it to the Graveyard”). (Example: “Blue Thunder T-45”.) Monsters with that text will activate their effects in ALL of the above scenarios.
OCG Rulings
- Returning this card to the Deck is a cost to activate the effect which Special Summons a different "Gladiator Beast" monster.[1]
- If "Gladiator Beast Samnite" battles with a monster with equal ATK and both monsters are destroyed by battle, you cannot activate the effect of "Gladiator Beast Samnite" which adds one "Gladiator Beast" card to your hand.[2]

Mentions in Other Rulings
- Ancient Forest: If a player controls both “Ancient Forest” and a Gladiator Beast monster that has attacked, at the end of the Battle Phase he can choose which effect to activate and resolve first.
- Seal of Wickedness: If you target a "Gladiator Beast" monster with this effect, and your opponent returns it to the Deck to activate its effect, the effect will still be negated and the "Gladiator Beast" monster will remain in the Deck.
Judge Program Forum Rulings
These Ruling(s) have not been confirmed as applicable to the TCG.[Notes 1] |
- If both players are about to activate a Gladiator Beast's effect(s) during the End Step of the Battle Phase, since each of these effects resolve independently of each other, then, similar to resolving effects during the Standby Phase and End Phase, the turn player may resolve one or more of his effects before the opponent will get to resolve theirs. Turn player will be able to resolve one of his effects or pass Priority to the opponent, who will then be able to resolve on [sic] of his effects.[3]
OCG Rulings
- Returning the "Gladiator Beast" monster to the Deck is a cost to activate the effect which Special Summons another "Gladiator Beast" monster from your Deck.[4]
- When "Gladiator Beast Alexander" etc. battles, if it is flipped face-down and then flipped face-up before the end of the Battle Phase, then you cannot activate the effect which Special Summons another "Gladiator Beast" monster from your Deck.[5]
- You cannot activate the effect of "Gladiator Beast Alexander" etc. which Special Summons a "Gladiator Beast" monster from your Deck if you do not have a "Gladiator Beast" monster in your Deck that you can Special Summon.[6]
- The effect of "Gladiator Beast Alexander" etc. which Special Summons a "Gladiator Beast" monster from the Deck only activates if "Gladiator Beast Alexander" is face-up on the field. If "Gladiator Beast Alexander" etc. battles and it is removed from the field (e.g. it was destroyed by battle), the effect will not activate, even if "Gladiator Beast Alexander" returns to the field.[7]
- You can Chain "Divine Wrath" to the effect of "Gladiator Beast Alexander" etc. when "Gladiator Beast Alexander" activates the effect which Special Summons a "Gladiator Beast" monster from the Deck. The effect will be negated, but "Gladiator Beast Alexander" etc. will not be destroyed because "Gladiator Beast Alexander" etc. was returned to the Deck as a cost to activate its effect.[8]
- "return it to the Deck" is a cost to activate the effect which Special Summons a "Gladiator Beast monster from the Deck. It is performed when you activate the effect.[9]
- You can activate the effect of "Gladiator Beast Alexander" etc. which Special Summons a "Gladiator Beast" monster from your Deck at the end of an opponent's Battle Phase in which "Gladiator Beast Alexander" battled.[10]
- If you gain control of your opponent's "Gladiator Beast Alexander" etc. and it battles, then at the end of the Battle Phase you can activate its effect. "Gladiator Beast Alexander" etc. is shuffled into your opponent's Deck, but you activated the effect, so you Special Summon a "Gladiator Beast" monster from your Deck. However, you cannot activate the effect of "Gladiator Beast Alexander" etc. if you do not have a "Gladiator Beast" monster in your Deck that you can Special Summon.[11]
- The negating effect of "Double Tool C&D" is still applied throughout the Battle Phase. If the equipped monster attacks "Gladiator Beast Alexander" and "Gladiator Beast Alexander" activates its effect and returns itself to the Deck, then its effect is negated and you do not Special Summon another "Gladiator Beast" monster from your Deck.[12]
- When "Gladiator Beast Alexander" battles while "Ancient Forest" is active, both effects are to resolve at the end of the Battle Phase, so the Turn Player can choose to resolve his effects first. If the same player controls both "Gladiator Beast Alexander" and "Ancient Forest", then the effects resolve in the order that the player chooses.[13]
- If "Rivalry of Warlords" is activate, then you can only activate the effect of "Gladiator Beast Laquari" to Special Summon a "Gladiator Beast" monster if you have another Beast-Warrior-Type "Gladiator Beast" monster in your Deck; you cannot activate the effect if you do not have any Beast-Warrior-Type "Gladiator Beast" monsters in your Deck. Also, if "Gladiator Beast Laquari" is returned to the Deck and you control no other face-up monsters, then you can Special Summon a Rock-Type monster like "Gladiator Beast Hoplomus.[14]
- If "Gladiator Beast Alexander" attacks "Krebons" or "Ally of Justice Catastor" and its effect activates, then if "Gladiator Beast War Chariot" negates the activation of the effect destroys it, then damage calculation is not performed. Thus, at the end of the Battle Phase you cannot activate the effect of "Gladiator Beast Alexander" which Special Summons another "Gladiator Beast" monster from the Deck.[15]
- If "Gladiator Beast Alexander" attacks a face-down "Man-Eater Bug" and its effect activates after damage calculation, then if "Gladiator Beast War Chariot" negates the activation of the effect and destroys it, then "Gladiator Beast Alexander" is treated as having battled. Thus, at the end of the Battle Phase you can activate the effect of "Gladiator Beast Alexander" which Special Summons another "Gladiator Beast" monster from your Deck.[15]
- If the effect of a monster like "Gladiator Beast Alexander" is activated by returning it to the Deck, then the effect of "Royal Oppression" may be activated in Chain to the effect. If you do so, then the effect of "Gladiator Beast Alexander" will be negated, but the "Gladiator Beast Alexander" which was returned to the Deck to activate the effect will not be destroyed. Also, when the "Gladiator Beast" monster is Special Summoned by the resolution of the effect of "Gladiator Beast Alexander" you cannot interrupt the resolution by activating "Royal Oppression" at this time.[16]
- At the end of your Battle Phase, if both you and your opponent control "Gladiator Beast" monsters which battled, then you (the Turn Player) may activate the effect of your "Gladiator Beast" monsters first.[17]
- Example: Your "Gladiator Beast Laquari" (1800 ATK) attacks your opponent's "Gladiator Beast Hoplomus" (2100 DEF). At the end of the Battle Phase, you may activate the effect of your "Gladiator Beast Laquari" first. After the effect resolves and Special Summons a monster, your opponent may activate the effect of "Gladiator Beast Hoplomus".[17]
- In the above example, if "Gladiator Beast Laquari" Special Summons "Gladiator Beast Murmillo" and the effect of "Gladiator Beast Murmillo" destroys "Gladiator Beast Hoplomus", then "Gladiator Beast Hoplomus" is no longer face-up on the field, so its effect cannot be activated.[17]
Versus Specific Cards
- Majestic Star Dragon: Suppose "Majestic Star Dragon" negates the effect of "Gladiator Beast Alexander", and then battles. At the end of the Battle Phase, "Majestic Star Dragon" cannot be returned to the Main Deck because it is a Synchro Monster, so you cannot activate the effect of "Gladiator Beast Alexander" as the effect of "Majestic Star Dragon". However, if "Majestic Star Dragon" negates the effect of "Gladiator Beast Gyzarus" instead, then "Majestic Star Dragon" can be returned to the Extra Deck, so you can activate the effect of "Gladiator Beast Gyzarus" as the effect of "Majestic Star Dragon".[18]
Previously Official Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been deemed unofficial by Konami.[19] They were previously considered official, but may or may not necessarily hold true nowadays. |
- The effect of the “Gladiator Beast” monsters that says, “At the end of the Battle Phase, if this card attacked or was attacked, you can return it to the Deck…”, returning the “Gladiator Beast” monster to the Deck is a cost to activate the effect.[20]
- If you do not have any “Gladiator Beast” monsters remaining in your Deck that you can Special Summon, you cannot activate the effect of the “Gladiator Beast” monster that attacked or was attacked. For example, if “Gladiator Beast Murmillo” attacks or is attacked and the only “Gladiator Beast” monster remaining in your Deck is another copy of “Gladiator Beast Murmillo”, you could not activate the effect of “Gladiator Beast Murmillo” at the end of the Battle Phase.[20]
- If a “Gladiator Beast” monster attacks or is attacked during the Battle Phase and the “Gladiator Beast” monster becomes flipped face-down by an effect during the Battle Phase, even if the “Gladiator Beast” monster is flipped face-up before the end of the Battle Phase its effect to Special Summon another “Gladiator Beast” monster cannot be activated.[20]
- “Divine Wrath” can be chained to the effect that returns the “Gladiator Beast” to the Deck. The effect will be negated, but the “Gladiator Beast” monster will not be destroyed because it is in the Deck.[20]
- If 2 or more “Gladiator Beast” monsters attack or are attacked during the Battle Phase, at the end of the Battle Phase the effect of each “Gladiator Beast” monster can be activated. The effects will activate and resolve separately. They are not combined onto the same Chain.[20]
- You can return face-down "Gladiator Beast" monsters to your Deck to Special Summon a "Gladiator Beast" Fusion Monster, but you must show your opponent the "Gladiator Beast" monsters to verify that they are correct.[20]
- If you take control of your opponent's "Gladiator Beast" monster and attack with it during the Battle Phase, you can return it to your opponent's Deck to Special Summon a "Gladiator Beast" monster from your Deck if you have a "Gladiator Beast" monster in your Deck that you can Special Summon.. [sic][20]
- You can use a "Gladiator Beast" Fusion Monster when Special Summoning another "Gladiator Beast" Fusion Monster. The "Gladiator Beast" Fusion Monster that you use for the Special Summon is returned to your Extra Deck.[20]
- You can activate "Torrential Tribute", "Bottomless Trap Hole", etc. when a "Gladiator Beast" monster is Special Summoned at the end of the Battle Phase.[20]
- If a "Gladiator Beast" monster attacks and its attack is stopped with a card effect ("Gravity Bind", "Spellbinding Circle", "Enemy Controller", etc.) or is negated during the Battle Step, the "Gladiator Beast" monster cannot activate its effect at the end of the Battle Phase.[20]
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Disarm: The “Gladiator Beast” monster returned to the Deck is returned to the Deck when “Disarm” is resolved. It is not a cost. You must show the “Gladiator Beast” to your opponent when resolving “Disarm's” effect.
- Disarm: You cannot activate “Disarm” if you do not have a “Gladiator Beast” monster in your hand.
- Gladiator Beast's Respite: The “Gladiator Beast” cards returned to the Deck are returned when the effect of “Gladiator Beast's Respite” is resolved. It is not a cost.
- Gladiator Beast's Respite: You can return any card with “Gladiator Beast” in its card name to your Deck when resolving the effect of “Gladiator Beast's Respite”, such as “Gladiator Beast's Battle Halberd” or another “Gladiator Beast's Respite”.
- Gladiator Beast's Respite: When resolving the effect of “Gladiator Beast's Respite”, if you do not have 2 “Gladiator Beast” cards to return to your Deck the effect of “Gladiator Beast's Respite” disappears. In this case you would not return any “Gladiator Beast” cards to your Deck and you would not draw 3 cards.
- Gladiator's Return: If 1 or more of the “Gladiator Beast” monsters selected by “Gladiator's Return” are removed from the Graveyard before “Gladiator's Return” is resolved, the effect of “Gladiator's Return” disappears.
- Parry: The "Gladiator Beast" monster returned to the Deck is returned to the Deck when "Parry" is resolved. It is not a cost. You must show the "Gladiator Beast" to your opponent when resolving "Parry's" effect.
- Parry: You cannot activate "Parry" if you do not have a "Gladiator Beast" monster in your hand.
- Test Tiger: "Test Tiger's" effect targets 1 "Gladiator Beast" monster you control.
- Test Tiger: You can Special Summon the same "Gladiator Beast" monster that you returned to your Deck, unless the "Gladiator Beast" monster has an effect preventing you from doing so, like "Gladiator Beast Alexander".
- Test Tiger: "Test Tiger" cannot target a face-down "Gladiator Beast" monster.
- Test Tiger: If you target a "Gladiator Beast" Fusion Monster with "Test Tiger's" effect, it is placed into the Extra Deck when "Test Tiger's" effect resolves.
