There are many occasions in which a card, in the anime, may contradict its lore in the anime. These are usually due to errors on the writers' part.
Yu-Gi-Oh!
- Spellbinding Circle - Select 1 monster. It loses 700 ATK, cannot attack or change its Battle Position, and its effect(s) is negated. When that monster is destroyed, destroy this card.
- Reason for contradiction: Despite this card's anime lore being similar to the first OCG lore. This card decreases the target's ATK by 700 every time it is affected.
- Shine Palace - Activate only by sending 1 "Toon World" you control to the Graveyard. This card is treated as "Toon World" while face-up on the field, and all LIGHT monsters you control gain 500 ATK.
- Reason for contradiction: This card's anime lore was written in a way that it looked similar to the OCG lore.
- Roulette Spider - Pay half your Life Points. Spin a wheel centered around the monster with the highest ATK on the field. After it stops spinning, that monster must attack in the direction "Roulette Spider" is pointing.
- Reason for contradiction: Joey payed Life Points to activate this card despite that the written anime lore didn't say this.
- Alligator's Sword Dragon - This card can attack your opponent directly if the only monsters they control are set monsters, EARTH monsters, WATER monsters, or FIRE monsters.
- Reason for contradiction: Although this card's written anime lore is the same as the OCG lore, Joey was still able to use this card's effect even though Mako's monsters were set.
- Mystical Refpanel - Activate only when your opponent activates a Spell Card. You may negate the effect of that card. At anytime, you can select and activate one of the following effects.
● Change the target of the Spell Card to another appropriate target. If the Spell Card was an Equip Spell Card, destroy it on the End Phase.
● Use the negated card from the Graveyard as you or your opponent's card.- Reason for contradiction: This card was saved for when Yugi needed it sometimes and this card could also affect Equip Spell Cards. Also Yugi could use "Meteor of Destruction" on either player with this card, but in the end he chose himself as he didn't want to see Joey die. Also "Mask of Brutality" was gone after "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" destroyed "Rogue Doll".
- Meteor of Destruction - You must pay 500 Life Points to activate this effect. Inflict 1000 points of damage to your opponent's Life Points. Then you may select 1 monster on your opponent's side of the field. The selected monster attack you.
- Reason for contradiction: This card's anime lore was written in a way that it looked similar to the OCG lore.
- Dark Sanctuary - Activate only when a "Dark Necrofear" is sent to your Graveyard. The Ghost of Dark Sanctuary appears. During each of your Main Phases, Tribute 1 monster or destroy this card. Your Monster Card Zones are also treated as Spell and Trap Card Zones.
- Reason for contradiction: Yami Bakura mentioned this even though it wasn't written in the anime lore. Also after Yami Bakura Tributed "Jowgen the Spiritualist", he set "Dark Spirit of the Silent" which he couldn't have done on the End Phase.
- Guardian Eatos - This card must first be Summoned while you control a face-up "Celestial Sword - Eatos". If you have no monsters in your Graveyard, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. If this card has a card equipped to it, once per turn you can send one Equip Spell Card equipped to this card to the Graveyard to remove from play cards from the top of your opponent's Graveyard up until a non-Monster Card is revealed. This card gains ATK equal to the total ATK of the monsters removed by this effect, until the end of the Battle Phase.
- Reason for contradiction: Despite what the written anime lore says, "Eatos" lost the boost it got from its effect when its attack failed to destroy "Dark Magician". Also Yami was able to bring "Eatos" back via "Monster Reborn" even though he didn't have "Celestial Sword - Eatos".
- Golden Castle of Stromberg - During each of your Standby Phases, send half the cards in your Deck to the Graveyard. If you cannot, destroy this card.
● Once per turn, during your Main Phase 1, Special Summon 1 random Level 4 or lower monster from your hand or Deck in face-up Attack Position.
● You cannot Normal Summon monsters.
● All monsters Special Summoned by this card's effect and all monsters your opponent controls must attack, if able.
● When an opponent's monster declares an attack, destroy that monster, and inflict damage to your opponent equal to half of that monster's ATK.
● This card cannot be destroyed by the effects of other Spells, Traps, or Effect Monsters.
● Your opponent must pay this card's maintenance cost.- Reason for contradiction: Despite what the written anime lore says, Leon was able to summon "Forest Wolf" from his hand which should have been impossible as Leon can only summon monsters from his Deck.
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
- Elemental HERO Flame Wingman - When this card destroys a monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard, inflict damage to your opponent equal to the ATK of that monster.
- Reason for contradiction: "Flame Wingman" managed to inflict damage 2300 damage to Dimitri when it destroyed "Dark Magician Girl" when the damage should have been 2000. Also there have been many occasions where "Flame Wingman" was summoned through something besides Fusion Summon.
- 100,000 Gauss! - Activate only while you control a face-up Plus monster and a Minus monster. Select one face-up monster your opponent controls It loses 800 ATK (If that face-up monster is in Defense Position, change it to Attack Position).
- Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore would make this card impossible to activate in the Duel that it was used in as "Amazoness Paladin" was in Attack Position when this card was activated.
Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's
- Fairy Wind -Destroy all other face-up Spell and Trap Cards on the field. Both players take damage equal to the total number of cards destroyed by this effect x 400. Spell Cards controlled by your opponent are excluded from this effect.
- Reason for contradiction: Despite this card's anime lore, both "Immortal Homeostasis" and "Wave of Ill Intent" were not counted for this card's damage effect.
- Call of the Haunted" - Target 1 monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target in face-up Attack Position. When this card leaves the field, destroy that target. When that target is removed from the field, destroy this card.
- Reason for contradiction: This card was destroyed when Grady used "Blizzard Lizard" and "Dark Tuner Catastrogue" for a Dark Synchro Summon even though "Blizzard Lizard" wasn't destroyed. This error is also somewhat present in GX when monsters summoned via this card's effect are removed from the field instead of just being destroyed.
- Roar of the Earthbound - Once per turn, when your opponent's monster declares an attack, if the ATK of the attacking monster is lower than that of a face-up "Earthbound Immortal" monster you control, destroy the attacking monster and inflict damage to your opponent equal to half that monster's ATK.
- Reason for contradiction: This card's anime lore looked similar to its TCG/OCG lore, but despite this, Yusei took only 900 damage which was the half the current ATK of "Speed Warrior" at that point.
- Chain Arrow - Select 1 face-up monster on the field. Once during this turn, if that monster battles with another monster, it gains 500 ATK during damage calculation only. Also, if that monster destroys a monster by battle, select 1 face-up monster your opponent controls. It loses 1000 ATK until the End Phase.
- Reason for contradiction: If the written anime lore of this card was used in the anime, then Andre shouldn't have been able to destroy "Junk Archer" as soon as he revived "Green Baboon, Defender of the Forest" as the effect of this card would have lasted until the end of Andre's turn.
- Glow-Up Bulb - You can send the top card of your Deck to the Graveyard and Special Summon this card from the Graveyard. Each player can only use the effect of "Glow-Up Bulb" once per Duel.
- Reason for contradiction: This card's written's anime lore would make it impossible for Akiza to activate in her Duel against Andre as she activated this card's effect on her Main Phase 1 and she only sent one card from the top of her Deck to the Graveyard not two.
- Magic Charge - Activate only when a Spell Card you control is destroyed. Both players take 2000 damage.
- Reason for contradiction: Andre managed to activate this card when Yusei destroyed "Speed Spell - The End of the Storm" to Special Summon "Card Breaker". If this card can only activate when the said Spell Card is destroyed by an effect, it would be impossible for Andre to activate this card the way he activated it as Yusei destroyed "The End of the Storm" for a Summoning condition, not an effect.
- Zushin the Sleeping Giant - This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card cannot be Special Summoned except by Tributing 1 Level 1 monster that has remained face-up on your side of the field for 10 or more of your turns. If this card battles with an opponent's monster, until the end of the Damage Step, it gains ATK equal to the ATK of the opponent's monster + 1000. Also if the monster that this card battles have effect(s) that affect this card, those effects are negated until the end of the Damage Step. This card cannot be targeted by the effects of your opponent's Spell/Trap Cards.
- Reason for contradiction: Despite this card's written anime lore, it didn't affect the effects of "Black-Winged Dragon" and "Shooting Star Dragon". If it had affected the latter, Yusei wouldn't have been able to save his "Shooting Star Dragon" from being destroyed.
Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL
- Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction - Cannot be destroyed by battle except with "Number" monsters. During your Standby Phase: Detach 1 Xyz Material from this card or take 2000 damage. While this card has no Xyz Materials, it cannot attack. When this card is targeted for an attack, while it has no Xyz Material: Destroy this card. When this card is destroyed: Take 2000 damage.
- Reason for contradiction: Despite that the anime card and the real card forbids the player from Special Summon monsters, Vetrix was able to summon Number 8: Heraldic King Genom-Heritage while this card was face-up.
- Number 25: Force Focus - Cannot be destroyed by battle except with "Number" monsters. When your opponent activates an Effect Monster's effect: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card to target that monster; negate that target's effect(s) this turn. When this card battles with an opponent's monster, you may detach one Xyz Material from this card. If you do, the monster that this card is battling has its effects negated this turn.
- Reason for contradiction: This card was able to negate the effect of "Gogogo Golem" which is a Continuous Effect in both the anime and the card game. This card's effect was also hinted in the anime to be able to negate the effect of "Number 39: Utopia".
- Photon World - When a "Photon" monster is Normal or Special Summoned: You can inflict damage to all players that do not control a "Photon" monster equal to the Summoned monster's Level × 100.
- Reason for contradiction: Despite this card's written anime lore, this card's effect did not activate when "Photon Kaiser" was summoned.
- Heroic Challenger - War Hammer - When this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard: Destroy all Equip Cards equipped to this card, then you can equip the destroyed monster to this card as an Equip Card. This card gains ATK equal to the ATK of a monster equipped to it.
- Reason for contradiction: Despite this card's written anime lore, Nistro was able to Special Summon this card during the Duel Coaster part of the World Duel Carnival finals.
- Dotedotengu - When this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 card either player controls; return it to the hand.
- Reason for contradiction: Despite this card's written anime lore, Yuma Tsukumo used this card to return a card controlled by Daisuke Katagiri.
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light
- Pyramid of Light - All God Cards on the field are removed from play. If this face-up card is removed from your side of the field, destroy "Andro Sphinx" and "Sphinx Teleia" on your side of the field and remove them from play.
- Reason for contradiction: Despite the written anime lore, this card still retained its TCG/OCG effect in the anime as "Andro Sphinx" and "Sphinx Teleia" were both destroyed when Yami Yugi finally destroyed this card.
