"D/D" (ディーディー DīDī), known as DD in the English manga and pronounced "Double D" in the English anime, is an archetype primarily comprised of DARK Fiend-Type monsters used by Declan Akaba in the special Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V chapter and anime. It is supported by its own sub-archetype, "D/D/D".

Design

The regular "D/D" monsters seem to be based in different figures and monsters from Western mythology, such as Chevaliers, Lilith, Ogres, Cerberus, Pandora, etc.

The "D/D Savant" monsters are references to great natural scientists from Western history, such as Galileo Galilei and Nicolaus Copernicus.

In contrast, the "D/D/D" sub-archetype features a distinct design style from the rest of the archetype, with many of its members modeled after famous conquerors from world history.

Taken together with its subordinate and sub-archetypes, the "D/D" archetype features a mild "business" sub-theme (probably to fit the profession of their owner in the anime), with many support cards referencing elements of modern big business. For example, the "Dark Contract" cards resemble business contracts, and the names of "D/D/D Resource Management" and "Contract Laundering" reference like-named company practices.

Additionally, some of the archetype's boss monsters such as"D/D/D Doom King Armageddon" feature a pun in its Japanese name– "Great Des (Death) King" is scripted as "Shiiō", a homophone for "CEO". A similar pun can be found in the Japanese name of "D/D/D Oblivion King Abyss Ragnarok", "Oblivion King", which is scripted as "Kaichiō", a homophone for "Chairman".

Etymology

According to Sora Perse, "D/D" is short for "Different Dimension" (ディファレント・ディメンション Difarento Dimenshon).[1]

Playing style

A large archetype with much redundancy to consistently make use of Main Deck Pendulum Monsters and Graveyard effects to Summon big Extra Deck Monster Synchros, that lead into, Fusion and XYZ Monsters.

Stopping at the two boss Monsters of the archetype: "D/D/D Duo-Dawn King Kali Yuga" (2 Level 8 D/D Monsters) and "D/D/D Wave Oblivion King Caesar Ragnarok" (2 D/D/D Monsters) for a breather and monstrous board control from both.

Of quick note, D/D/D Monsters count as D/D monsters as well; but not the reverse.

Besides the two Monsters above there are three important aspects to any D/D strategy that must first be understood avoid confusing builds or overdone combos. "D/D Savant Kepler" and "Dark Contract with the Gate" search each other; "Kepler" is usually used as Fusion Material or fodder for "D/D Berfomet" effect to remove it from the field quickly.

The Fusion aspect is covered by "D/D Swirl Slime", "D/D Necro Slime" (after being dumped to the Graveyard) and "Dark Contract with the Swamp King"; these cards are used to Fusion Summon "D/D/D Oracle King d'Arc" to start re/gaining Life Points and is kept on the field using the effect of "D/D/D Wave King Caesar" to maintain advantage or recover at the end of either Battle Phase.

Without either "D'Arc" or (to a lesser extent) "D/D/D Rebel King Leonidas" this deck's Life Point cost becomes hard to manage.

Either Ranking-Up into "D/D/D Marksman King Tell" or with "D/D" Fusion Materials (both used in combo as an early way to and) are the quickest ways to fuel of "D/D/D Human Resources"; with ideally extra deck Monsters to avoid/lessen "D/D/D Human Resources" high cost to activate.

The above covers all the basic moves and openings of the archetype to search and maintain Life Points, but to reach the boss Monsters either "D/D Berfomet"s effect to Level 8 and "D/D/D Oblivion King Abyss Ragnarok"s Pendulum or Monster effect (both effects of "Ragnarok" be used in the same turn) are usually needed to extend combo's to reach them. Side note, "Transmodify" can be used on a Level 7 "D/D" Monster to reach Ragnarok quicker.

In the coming "Structure Deck: Pendulum Domination", "D/D Savant Copernicus"s Summon effect to dump cards,, combined with "D/D Orthos" as an continuous Pendulum Tuner (both being Level 4s) and "Dark Contract with the Yamimakai" will all give a consistent Pendulum scale; and ability to Summon "D/D/D Cursed King Siegfried" who can negate single Pendulum and Spell/Traps until ready to Summon "D/D/D Wave Oblivion King Caesar Ragnarok" and destroy everything instead.

The final important card to any D/D strategy is "Dark Contract with Errors"s "Trap Stun"-like effect cards like "Vanity's Emptiness", "Skill Drain" and so on, turn-off during your turn; similar to the "Vanity's Emptiness" and "Stardust Spark Dragon" lock.

When learning this Deck it is recommended to stick to level 4 & 8 focus while building it; to simplify rather than focusing, for example, Level 5, 6 & 7 Monsters that only help the Fusion aspect whereas 4 & 8 are good for all three types of Extra Deck Monsters.

Weaknesses

Because this Deck focuses on swarming to push the game, cards that can disable or counter swarming or searching, like "Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo" or "Thunder King Rai-Oh", can greatly hinder this Deck. Additionally, the archetype's synergy with the "Dark Contract" archetype provides a weakness to Spell/Trap removal, as well as a dependence on cards that mitigate the damage from the "Dark Contract" cards.
