"Gishki", known as "Ritua" (リチュア Richua) in the OCG, is an archetype of WATER monsters released in Duel Terminal - Raid of the Inverz!!. The archetype is a member of the Duel Terminal storyline.
"Gishki", known as "Ritua" (リチュア Richua) in the OCG, is an archetype of WATER monsters released in Duel Terminal - Raid of the Inverz!!. Their team symbol is a blue sapphire mirror that all the members wear, usually around their necks or on their staves. The Ritual Monsters (and, starting with "Merrowgeist", Xyz Monsters) of the group all have "Evigishki" at the beginning of their names (except "Zielgigas" and "Psychelone"), with the name of the kind of creature they've become at the end.
+
Due to their Japanese names, the cards "Ritual Buster", "Ritual Weapon" and "Spiritual Forest" are also part of this archetype.

+
Lore
Their Japanese name, "Ritua", is a corruption of the English word "Ritual", used in the TCG terms "Ritual Spell Card", "Ritual Summon" and "Ritual Monster". Their English name, "Gishki", is a corruption of the Japanese word "Gishiki", meaning "Ritual" in the same context as the TCG terms. The choice for the English name not only translates the play on words perfectly, but also prevents the need for explaining how cards with "Ritual" in their name aren't part of the archetype.

+

All known "Gishki" monsters are WATER and many are Spellcaster, Sea Serpent or Aqua-Type. Their playstyle is focused on Ritual Summoning and either searching for cards in the deck or returning cards to the Deck.
+
"Gishki" is a society of dark arts practitioners founded and led by "Noellia", who split off from the "Ice Barrier" society, following the first war between the Duel Terminal world against the "Fabled". They wield the same powers as the "Ice Barrier" society, but uses it for nefarious purposes, transforming themselves into wicked monsters to further the goals of "Noellia".

+
"Noellia" was originally an "Ice Barrier" mage, who was accidentally corrupted by the "Steelswarm" during the first Duel Terminal world war, and as a result began to research into dark ritual arts, leading to her forming "Gishki" from her adopted children. "Noellia", under the influence of the "Steelswarm", began the second Duel Terminal world war by leading "Gishki" to invade the "Gusto" clan, officially for resources, but secretly to release the "Steelswarm". Faking as an ally against the "Steelswarm", "Noellia" managed to corrupt the "Vylon" into attacking the surface tribes.
The "Gishki" archetype has three Ritual Spell Cards: "Gishki Aquamirror", "Gishki Photomirror" and "Forbidden Arts of the Gishki". "Gishki Photomirror" in particular is very unique, as it is the first Ritual Spell Card that allows you to use Life Points instead of Tributes for the Ritual Summon, allowing an easier way to call "Gishki" Ritual monsters.
+
After both the "Steelswarm" and the "Vylon" were decicively defeated, "Noellia" resumed the invasion of the "Gusto", and indirectly led to the release of the "Evilswarm", causing even more chaos across the world. Eventually, the "Constellar" managed to free "Noellia" from her corruption. Wrought by guilt, "Noellia" sacrificed herself to protect her children, "Gishki Avance" and "Gishki Emilia". When "Sophia, Goddess of Rebirth" awoke and plans to reset the world, "Avance" and "Emilia" assisted in defeating "Sophia".

+
After the war against "Sophia", the only known survivors from the clan are "Gishki Avance" and "Gishki Emilia". They would go on to found the "Nekroz" clan, a successor clan with more noble goals.
Story
+
Design
"Gishki" is an organization that wields the same power as the "Ice Barrier" but uses it for the “Aquamirror Meditation” in order to summon ancient and wicked monsters. In order to gain the bountiful resources of the Mist Valley marshlands, they begin to invade the "Gusto" territories. However, they are interrupted by the "Steelswarm", who intend to take over the surface land. The "Gishki" have no choice but to work with the other clans. With the "Vylon's" temporary assistance, they obtain new powers with which to resist the "Steelswarm". Although the invaders are defeated, other conflicts arise: the "Vylon" decide to exterminate the clans in order to prevent future wars. Out of options, the "Gishki" choose to team up with the other clans, once again, in order to cease the actions of the "Vylons". After the "Vylons" are beaten back, the unions between clans dissolve and the "Gishki" turn to the "Lavals" to power their rituals. Since materials continue to run scarce, they resume their original invasion of "Mist Valley", enacting a genocide of the "Gustos".
+
Appearance
Once again, their conquest of the Valley is interrupted, this time by the "lswarm" virus, which spreads rapidly across the Duel Terminal World. Even after resurrecting the three dragons of the "Ice Barrier" in order to combat the corrupted forces of the "lswarm", most of the "Gishki" tribe is unable to resist the disease and are themselves infected and recruited. Up against a proverbial wall, the Gishki, in a moment of desperation, revived the leader of the Steelswarm in a last-ditch effort.
+
Non-Ritual "Gishki" monsters typically take two forms: normal human magicians, or humanoid monsters with traits of aquatic animals. All "Gishki" Spellcaster non-Ritual monsters take the former form, and almost all "Gishki" non-Spellcaster non-Ritual monsters (with the exception of "Gishki Vanity") take the latter form.

+
The "Gishki" Ritual and Xyz Monsters appears to be corrupted, transformed or even combined versions of pre-existing "Gishki" monsters with each other or with monsters from another archetype or a monster from another archetype that was transformed/revived as an "Evigishki".
{| class="wikitable"
+
Almost all members of the archetype wear a blue sapphire mirror, usually around their necks or on their staves. Their faction symbol is also a stylized version of this mirror.
 +
Etymology
 +
The theme's OCG name, "Ritua", is a corruption of the English word "Ritual", as used in the TCG terms "Ritual Spell Card", "Ritual Summon", and "Ritual Monster". The TCG name, "Gishki", is a corruption of the Japanese word 儀式 Gishiki, meaning "Ritual" in the same context as the TCG terms, adapting the word play by reversing the language.
 +
All but one of the "Evigishki" members have a portmanteau name formed using a term relating to spiritual and/or psychological concepts, and a legendary creature (often a sea monster). Note that "Psychelone" and "Zielgigas" count as "Evigishkis", their TCG names being inaccurately translated.

The "Gishki" archetype focuses on Ritual Summoning. The archetype's non-Ritual monsters focus on setting up the Ritual Summons by searching out the Ritual Monsters and Spells (directly or indirectly), and to provide tributes for "Gishki" Ritual Monsters. The two fastest "Gishki" Ritual card searchers are "Gishki Shadow" and "Gishki Vision", who can be discarded from the hand to search a "Gishki" Ritual Spell or Monster; they also have effects that lets them be used as the entire Ritual Summon requirement for Ritual Summons of WATER Ritual Monsters.
"Gishki" Decks focus on Ritual Summoning and then recycling cards to maintain advantage. For example, after using "Gishki Aquamirror" to Ritual Summon a "Gishki" Ritual monster, it can be returned to the Deck in order to add a "Gishki" Ritual Monster from your Graveyard to your hand, possibly the ones that was Tributed during the previous Ritual Summon.
+
"Gishki" Ritual Monsters focus on shuffling cards from the opponent's hand, field or Graveyard back to the Deck, either to break boards or to make the opponent lose card advantage. Most "Gishki" builds focus on going first and summoning "Evigishki Gustkraken" multiple times  in the first turn, in order to return as many cards from the opponent's hand back into the deck, forcing the opponent to start in a massively disadvantageous position.

+
"Gishki" Ritual Spells have several novel effects: "Gishki Photomirror" Ritual Summons by paying LP instead of tributing monsters, "Forbidden Arts of the Gishki" can Ritual Summon by tributing the opponent's monsters (at the cost of putting heavy restrictions on the player's actions afterwards), and "Gishki Aquamirror" is a conventional Ritual Spell that has a GY effect to recover "Gishki" Ritual Monsters in the GY (and shuffles itself back into the deck) for reuse.
"Gishki" Decks are well-stocked with search effects. "Gishki Shadow" and "Gishki Vision" are vital to the Deck for this reason: by discarding one of them, a "Gishki" Ritual Spell or Ritual Monster can be added from the Deck to the hand. If you Ritual Summon a "Gishki" Ritual monster (all of them are WATER), each card can act as the full Tribute cost. "Salvage" can be used to return them to the hand, for up to 2 or 3 Ritual Summons in one turn. When Summoned, "Gishki Abyss" can add any "Gishki" monster with 1000 or less DEF to your hand. "Gishki Ariel" can search the Deck for any "Gishki" monster when flipped.
+
A number of "Gishki" monsters, such as "Chain", "Avance", "Natalia", and the Ritual Monsters "Zielgigas" and "Levianima", focus on manipulating and interacting with the player's top deck to search out Ritual Monsters and Spells or activate effects; due to their slow speed, these effects are largely obsolete in the 2021 metagame.
<br>Another remarkable searcher is "Gishki Chain" that is a "Gishki" version of "Pot of Duality", allowing you to see the top 3 cards of the Deck and add a Ritual Spell or Monster Card to your hand, with the difference that you can reorder the remaining cards as you please. This can be used to save a "Gishki Shadow" or "Vision" and can be very well combined with "Gishki Zielgigas" and "Gishki Diviner". Finally, it is very useful in any Ritual-based deck, since it doesn't especifies that the card you can add to your hand must be a "Gishki" card.
+
The going-first "Gustkraken"-focused build benefits greatly from a variant of the "Crystron Halqifibrax" → "Mecha Phantom Beast Auroradon" combo line, which uses two copies of "Deskbot 001" and generic Rank 4 monsters to repeatedly summon, send to GY, and recycle copies of "Herald of the Arc Light" to search multiple Ritual Monsters and Spells in a single turn. This can enable 3-5 summons of "Gustkraken" in 1 turn, potentially completely clearing the opponent's hand.

+
Aside from Ritual Summoning, the archetype can also perform alternate combos lines such as the "Bahamut Shark" "Toadally Awesome" line, through cards like "Gishki Beast".
"Gishki Beast" is useful as it allows you to perform a quick Xyz Summon or use the Special Summoned "Gishki Shadow" or "Vision" as the entire tribute for a Ritual Summon.
+
Recommended cards
Ritual Monsters in the "Gishki" arsenal include "Evigishki Levianima", "Gishki Zielgigas" and "Evigishki Soul Ogre". "Soul Ogre" can provide an out to most locks and wall monsters. "Levianima" lets you draw a card upon attack declaration, allowing you to quickly regain the advantage that have been lost in result of its Ritual Summon. "Zielgigas" lends muscle to a "Gishki" player's field with its gigantic 3200 ATK and its effects are similar to that of "Soul Ogre" and "Levianima".

Another build utilizes the one-shot Ritual Summon abilities to quickly Ritual Summon two or more "Gishki Zielgigas" to give quick massive damage and clearing the field beforehand.  Then, during the Main Phase 2, the player can overlay 2 "Zeal Gigas" to Xyz Summon "Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav Max" and use its burn effect to end the duel and complete the OTK (3200 + 3200 + 2000 = 8400 damage). An OTK can be also performed with "Skypalace Gangaridai".

Elsewhere, "Evigishki Gustkraken" has its own deck, focused on its effect which returns one of two cards in your opponent's hand to the Deck, it can't generate continuous advantage on its own, however, with the support that "Salvage" brings, it can efficiently loop and take out several cards from your opponent's hand, while maintaining advantage yourself and gaining knowledge of your opponent's remaining hand. This build become severely hampered due to "Gustkraken"'s limitation on September 2012 Lists.

"Gishki Psychelone" has an effect similar to that of "Evigishki Gustkraken", allowing you to return a card of your opponent's hand to the deck. The two main differences is that its effect can be used once per turn and is depends on how lucky you are, since you have to declare one Type and Attribute, and if the revealed card is a monster of the declared Type and Attribute, it is returned to the Deck. This is useful against one-Type-and-Attribute-based decks, such as "Ancient Gear" (Machine/EARTH), "Watt" (Thunder/LIGHT) etc. It has a fair 2150 ATK for a Level 4 monster — so can be Special Summoned by "Gishki Beast" — and can be more easily Ritual Summoned: you can, for example, tribute the now-meaningless "Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands" that you used to search "Psychelone" or "Aquamirror".

"Evigishki Mind Augus" can function as somewhat of a second "Pot of Avarice", returning 5 cards from either player's Graveyard to the Decks when Ritual Summoned. Although the advantage it produces is not immediate, its recycling effect can be useful in certain cases to reuse Limited cards or disrupt your opponent's play, shuffling cards like "Inzektor Hornet", "Stardust Dragon", "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World", "Plaguespreader Zombie", "Necro Gardna" etc.

"Evigishki Merrowgeist" is an Xyz Monster and, so far, the only one non-Ritual Monster of the "Evigishki" series. It can be easily Xyz Summoned by using the effect of "Gishki Beast" and is very useful against monsters that activate their effects by being sent from the Field to the Graveyard (like the Elemental Searchers, most of the "Gusto" monsters, "Pyramid Turtle", "Warrior Lady of the Wasteland" etc): by detaching one of its Xyz Materials after Damage Calculation, you can shuffle that monster back into the Deck, a strategy that follows the stantard gameplay of the "Gishki".

An average card for the archetype is "Forbidden Arts of the Gishki", which functions like a Ritual-oriented version of "Super Polymerization": a "Gishki" Ritual Summon can be performed using monsters from both sides of the field; but keep in mind that it cannot send an Xyz Monster. Drawbacks, however, are that the levels of the targeted monsters must total the level of the intended Summon exactly, the Ritual monster's ATK is halved and you cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn it is activated. This card is best used to Summon "Evigishki Soul Ogre", as most Decks contain a high number of Level 4 monsters, he remains at decent 2800 DEF wall and his effect remains live.

Hieratical Gishki
+
Weaknesses
With the release of Hieratic archetype, it is now viable to combine "Evigishki Gustkraken" with some Hieratic cards such as "Hieratic Dragon of Su" and "Hieratic Dragon of Tefnuit" to create massive hand control loops, along with ability to rapid Summoning Rank 6 Xyz Monsters. "Preparation of Rites", "Hieratic Seal of Convocation" and "Salvage" are important in this deck to ensure you can execute the loop as soon as possible.
+
* Anti-Special Summoning floodgates, such as "Archlord Kristya", "Evilswarm Ophion", "Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo", "Jowgen the Spiritualist" and the "Vanity's" cards can prevent the deck from summoning its Ritual Monsters.

+
* Anti-searching floodgates like "Thunder King Rai-Oh", "Mistake" and "Deck Lockdown" can block the effects of "Gishki Shadow" and "Gishki Vision", preventing the deck from performing consistent Ritual Summons.
However, with "Evigishki Gustkraken" becoming Limited in September 2012 Lists, this deck-type has become less consistent, but is still very viable with support from the rest of Gishki monsters and "Evigishki Tetrogre" can fill the empty slots that were 2 other copies of Evigishki Gustkraken.
+
* GY banishing floodgates like "Dimensional Fissure" and "Macro Cosmos" can damage the deck's ability to recover cards from the GY.

* In the OCG, all "Gishki" Ritual and Xyz Monsters have "Eviritua" as a part of their names. In the TCG however, the localized version of "Eviritua", "Evigishki", is not used on all "Gishki" Ritual and Xyz Monsters, with "Zielgigas" and "Psychelone" having the standard "Gishki" name instead of "Evigishki". Since there's no card that specifically support "Evigishki" cards, this is not an issue.

* "Gishki Emilia" and "Gishki Natalia" are Spirit monsters because they are the lingering spirits of dead characters of the "Gishki" storyline:

|monsters =

** "Emilia" lost her life during the forced transformation into "Evigishki Gustkraken", conducted by "Gishki Noellia"; while her soul persisted, her physical body was permanently turned into "Gustkraken". Her soul was later fused with "Musto, Oracle of Gusto" to form "Evigishki Merrowgeist" when the tribes combined their powers to fight the corrupted "Vylons", in which both "Gustkraken" and "Merrowgeist" were slain by "Vylon Disigma". "Gishki Avance" later tried to resurrect "Emilia" with the "Gishki Photomirror", but his soul was instead bound with hers and formed the rampaging "Evigishki Levianima". "Noellia", who was finally freed from the "Lswarm" virus, managed to split the two and fully resurrect "Emilia", as depicted in "Aquamirror Cycle" and "Spell Wall".

Destiny Gishki
With the release of "Gishki Diviner", a new "Destiny HERO" based Deck has become viable, using the effects of "Gishki Diviner", "Archfiend's Oath" and "Destiny HERO - Diamond Dude" with "Convulsion of Nature" to gain free advantage. "Deep Sea Diva" Special Summons "Gishki Diviner" and while "Destiny HERO - Malicious" Special Summons itself from your Graveyard after being discarded by "Destiny Draw", giving you free advantage. When used with "Deep Sea Diva", you can get a "Scrap Dragon", use "Diviner's" effect and then destroy "Diviner" and a card your opponent controls or just keep "Diviner" out for later. In addition to that, with "Elemental HERO Stratos" or "Destiny HERO - Diamond Dude" and "Deep Sea Diva", you can Synchro Summon "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier" (Traditional Format only) or a Level 6 Synchro Monster such as "Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier". With just "Deep Sea Diva", you can Synchro Summon a Level 5 Synchro Monster such as "Ally of Justice Catastor". In addition to that, "Miracle Fusion" allows you to Special Summon "Elemental HERO Absolute Zero" which not only can destroy all of your opponent's monsters but also can reach 3500 ATK easily with this deck. With the use of "Convulsion of Nature", "Mind Crush" and "D.D. Designator" (which happens to be good against Dark World) become more useful.

Due to all these combos, the deck is extremely explosive. The main weakness is, of course, not drawing "Convulsion of Nature" but even then the deck is still quite powerful.

Recently popular among the online communities, this deck utilize several draw-based Spell Cards like "One Day of Peace", "Card Destruction", and "Hand Destruction" to force both players draw cards and depleting their deck as fast as possible (often even before the opponent's turn actually started), then Ritual Summoning "Evigishki Mind Augus" for preventing the player from decking out him/herself.

Weakness
Despite the enormous potential of their high-speed Ritual Summoning technique, Gishki deck have some weaknesses. The first is common to the metagame as of late: Anti-Special Summon cards. "Archlord Kristya" and "Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo" can stop the heart of this deck's strategy, due to its reliance on Special Summoning, no matter the build. "Thunder King Rai-Oh" also poses a threat, since it can block the effects of "Gishki Shadow", "Gishki Chain" and "Gishki Vision".

"Dimensional Fissure", "D.D. Crow" and "Macro Cosmos" are also trouble. The Graveyard is a great resource for the "Gishki", given their drop-and-recycle strategy, so being shut off from it can have serious repercussions. Banishment renders almost all the key "Gishki" cards partially, if not completely, useless.

"Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier", "Mist Wurm", "Compulsory Evacuation Device" and other "Bounce" cards can also be annoying, simply because they can render pointless the processes by which a Gishki Ritual Monsters (and also Xyz Monsters) were Summoned. This can be especially frustrating if the Ritual Monster was Summoned via "Gishki Photomirror": the "Gishki" is left at a disadvantage in both field presence and Life Points, the severity of it depending on the level of the Ritual Monster. Siding in "Effect Veiler", "Dark Bribe" or "Divine Wrath" can potentially combat those threats. Most "Gishki" decks can also run "Royal Decree" to halt standard threats like "Solemn Warning", "Solemn Judgment" and "Bottomless Trap Hole.

"Gishki" decks have great difficulty keeping hand advantage and are prone to dead draws, depending on the build. "Evigishki Levianima" and "Moray of Greed" can alleviate this problem by quickly restocking the hand.

For the Mind Augus Deck-Out Loop variant players, this deck is so vulnerable if they cannot pull off their deck-out combo in the first turn, since they almost don't have any power for actual battling aside from "Evigishki Soul Ogre". "Evigishki Mind Augus" also vulnerable to several monster removal effects, the worst being "Bottomless Trap Hole", since once it's banished, even "Gishki Aquamirror" cannot recover it. "Mind Crush" and "Neko Mane King" also can disrupt this strategy severely.

Trivia
* All of the "Gishki" monsters, except "Gishki Diviner", are even Level monsters.

* Curiously, it seems as though the "Evigishki" monsters are members of the "Gishki" archetype that have been transformed using their rituals into part-beast and from the artwork of "Aquamirror Illusion", the transformations aren't always voluntary.

** However, based on "Evigishki Tetrogre" and "Gishki Psychelone", both of whom involve "Gishki Noellia", it would appear that the transformations are reversible.

* Furthermore, this archetype, with its transformative and occult elements, seems to borrow ideas from H.P. Lovecraft.

"Gishki", known as "Ritua" (リチュア Richua) in the OCG, is an archetype of WATER monsters released in Duel Terminal - Raid of the Inverz!!. The archetype is a member of the Duel Terminal storyline. Due to their Japanese names, the cards "Ritual Buster", "Ritual Weapon" and "Spiritual Forest" are also part of this archetype.

Lore[edit]

The "Gishki" crest

"Gishki" is a society of dark arts practitioners founded and led by "Noellia", who split off from the "Ice Barrier" society, following the first war between the Duel Terminal world against the "Fabled". They wield the same powers as the "Ice Barrier" society, but uses it for nefarious purposes, transforming themselves into wicked monsters to further the goals of "Noellia". After the war against "Sophia", the only known survivors from the clan are "Gishki Avance" and "Gishki Emilia". They would go on to found the "Nekroz" clan, a successor clan with more noble goals.

Design[edit]

Appearance[edit]

Non-Ritual "Gishki" monsters typically take two forms: normal human magicians, or humanoid monsters with traits of aquatic animals. All "Gishki" Spellcaster non-Ritual monsters take the former form, and almost all "Gishki" non-Spellcaster non-Ritual monsters (with the exception of "Gishki Vanity") take the latter form. The "Gishki" Ritual and Xyz Monsters appears to be corrupted, transformed or even combined versions of pre-existing "Gishki" monsters with each other or with monsters from another archetype or a monster from another archetype that was transformed/revived as an "Evigishki". Almost all members of the archetype wear a blue sapphire mirror, usually around their necks or on their staves. Their faction symbol is also a stylized version of this mirror.

Etymology[edit]

The theme's OCG name, "Ritua", is a corruption of the English word "Ritual", as used in the TCG terms "Ritual Spell Card", "Ritual Summon", and "Ritual Monster". The TCG name, "Gishki", is a corruption of the Japanese word 儀式 Gishiki, meaning "Ritual" in the same context as the TCG terms, adapting the word play by reversing the language.

Evigishki Sacrifice(s) in lore Mirror used in lore Name origin
Psychelone Noellia + a Steelswarm corpse Aquamirror Psyche + aspidochelone
Gustkraken Emilia's corpse Ghast + kraken
Merrowgeist Emilia's soul + Musto, Oracle of Gusto Merrow + geist
Mind Augus Ariel Mind + ogress
Tetrogre Noellia + Vylon Tetra Tetra + ogre
Soul Ogre Shadow Soul + ogre
Zielgigas Steelswarm Hercules' corpse Zeal + Gigantes
Levianima Avance + Emilia's soul Photomirror Leviathan + Anima
Neremanas Ariel Nekromirror Nereid + Mánas

Playing style[edit]

Aside from Ritual Summoning, the archetype can also perform alternate combos lines such as the "Bahamut Shark" → "Toadally Awesome" line, through cards like "Gishki Beast".
