World Championship 2016 Special: Yugi vs. Kaiba

Yugi vs. Kaiba was a scripted Duel that took place during the second day of the World Championship 2016 in Orlando, Florida on August 21, 2016. Dan Green and Eric Stuart reprised their roles as Yugi Muto and Seto Kaiba, respectively.

Featured Duel: Yugi Muto vs. Seto Kaiba

Turn 1: Yugi Muto
Yugi activates "Graceful Charity", drawing 3 cards then discarding 2 cards ("Electromagnetic Turtle" and "Magician Navigation"). He then Normal Summons "Magician's Rod" (1600/100) in Defense Position. Since "Magician's Rod" was Normal Summoned, Yugi activates its effect, allowing him to add a Spell/Trap Card that lists "Dark Magician" in its text from his Deck to his hand. He adds "Dark Magical Circle".

Yugi then activates "Dark Magical Circle", to look at the top three cards of his Deck and add "Dark Magician" or a Spell/Trap Card that lists "Dark Magician" in its text to his hand. He adds "Dark Magician". Yugi Sets a card.

Turn 2: Seto Kaiba
Kaiba activates the Field Spell Card "Mausoleum of White". Since he controls no monsters, Kaiba Special Summons "Kaiser Vorse Raider" (1900/1200) from his hand in Attack Position. He then Normal Summons "Maiden with Eyes of Blue" (0/0) in Attack Position. Kaiba activates the first effect of "Mausoleum of White", allowing him to send a Normal Monster from his hand or Deck to the Graveyard to increase the ATK of a monster he controls by 100 for each Level of the sent monster. He sends "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from his Deck and targets "Maiden" (0 → 800). Since "Maiden" was targeted by a card effect, Kaiba activates its effect, Special Summoning a second "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" (3000/2500) from his Deck in Attack Position.

Yugi activates his face-down "Magical Dimension", Tributing a Spellcaster-Type monster he controls to Special Summon another Spellcaster-Type monster from his hand, then he can choose to destroy a monster his opponent controls. Yugi Tributes "Magician's Rod" to Special Summon "Dark Magician" (2500/2100) from his hand in Attack Position and destroy "Maiden". The effect of "Dark Magical Circle" activates, as "Dark Magician" was Special Summoned, allowing Yugi to banish a card Kaiba controls. He banishes "Blue-Eyes White Dragon". Kaiba Sets a card.

Turn 3: Yugi Muto
Yugi Normal Summons "Kuribandit" (1000/700) in Attack Position. He activates its effect, Tributing it to reveal the top five cards of his Deck, add any Spell/Trap Cards revealed to his hand, and discard any monsters. Yugi reveals "Spellbinding Circle", "Thousand Knives", "Seven Tools of the Bandit", "Mystic Box", and "Dark Illusion", all of which are added to his hand.

"Dark Magician" attacks "Kaiser Vorse Raider", but Kaiba activates his face-down "Shadow Spell" to prevent "Dark Magician" from attacking and reduce its ATK by 700. Yugi activates the effect of "Magician's Navigation" in his Graveyard, banishing it to negate the effects of "Shadow Spell" until the end of the turn. The attack continues, and "Kaiser Vorse Raider" is destroyed (Kaiba: 4000 → 3400). As "Kaiser Vorse Raider" was destroyed by battle, its effect activates, causing the monster that destroyed it to lose 500 ATK ("Dark Magician": 2500 → 2000). Yugi Sets two cards.

During the End Phase, the effect of "Magician's Navigation" expires and "Dark Magician" loses 700 ATK due to "Shadow Spell" ("Dark Magician": 2000 → 1300).

Turn 4: Seto Kaiba
Kaiba activates "Pot of Greed" to draw two cards. He then Normal Summons "Alexandrite Dragon" (2000/100) in Attack Position. Kaiba activates "Silent Doom" to Special Summon a Normal Monster from his Graveyard in Defense Position, but it won't be able to attack. Kaiba Special Summons "Blue-Eyes White Dragon". He then activates the second effect of "Mausoleum of White" to Normal Summon a Level 1 LIGHT Tuner monster in addition to his regular Normal Summon/Set. He Normal Summons "Sage with Eyes of Blue" (0/1500) in Attack Position.

As "Sage" was Normal Summoned, Kaiba activates its effect, which lets him add a Level 1 LIGHT Tuner monster except "Sage with Eyes of Blue" from his Deck to his hand. He adds "The White Stone of Ancients". He activates "Cards of Consonance" to discard a Dragon-Type Tuner monster to draw two cards. He discards "The White Stone of Ancients".

Kaiba tunes the Level 1 "Sage" with the Level 8 "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" to Synchro Summon "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon" (2500/3000) in Attack Position. He then banishes the DARK monster "Kaiser Vorse Raider" and the LIGHT monster "Sage" to Special Summon "Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End" (3000/2500) from his hand in Attack Position. Kaiba activates the effect of "Chaos Emperor Dragon", paying 1000 LP (Kaiba: 3400 → 2400) to send all cards on the field and in both players' hands to the Graveyard and inflict 300 damage to Yugi for each card. As Kaiba activated a monster effect that would inflict damage to Yugi, Yugi activates the effect of "Clear Kuriboh" in his hand, discarding it to negate the effects of "Chaos Emperor Dragon".

"Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon" attacks "Dark Magician", but Yugi activates the effect of "Electromagnetic Turtle" in his Graveyard, banishing it in an attempt to end Kaiba's Battle Phase. Kaiba activates the effect of "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon", negating the activation of the effect of "Electromagnetic Turtle". The attack continues, but Yugi activates his Set "Spellbinding Circle" to prevent "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon" from attacking and decrease its ATK by 700 ("Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon": 2500 → 1800). Since Yugi activated a Spell/Trap Card during Kaiba's turn, he Special Summons "Magician of Dark Illusion" (2100/2500) from his hand in Defense Position. Due to its own effect, "Magician of Dark Illusion" is also treated as "Dark Magician" while it is on the field. As Yugi Special Summoned a "Dark Magician", the effect "Dark Magical Circle" activates, allowing Yugi to banish "Chaos Emperor Dragon".

"Alexandrite Dragon" attacks and destroys "Dark Magician" (Yugi: 4000 → 3300). Kaiba Sets a card. During the End Phase, Kaiba activates the effect of "The White Stone of Ancients" in his Graveyard, as it was sent there this turn, allowing him to Special Summon his third "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" (3000/2500) from his Deck in Attack Position.

Turn 5: Yugi Muto
Since he controls "Dark Magician", Yugi activates "Thousand Knives" to destroy a card his opponent controls. He targets "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon", but Kaiba activates the effect of "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon" in response, Tributing it to Special Summon a LIGHT Dragon-Type Synchro Monster from his Extra Deck in Defense Position, but it will be destroyed during the End Phase. He Special Summons "Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon" (2500/3000). Since "Azure-Eyes" was Special Summoned, its effect activates, preventing all Dragon-Type monsters that Kaiba currently controls from being targeted or destroyed by card effects until the end of the next turn, which also protects it from the effect of "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon".

Since Yugi activated a Spell Card, the effect of "Magician of Dark Illusion" activates, allowing Yugi to Special Summon "Dark Magician" (2500/2100) from his Graveyard in Attack Position. This activates the effect of "Dark Magical Circle", allowing Yugi to banish "Mausoleum of White". Yugi overlays the Level 7 "Dark Magician" and "Magician of Dark Illusion" to Xyz Summon "Ebon High Magician" (2300/2800) in Defense Position. Yugi banishes the DARK-Attribute "Magician's Rod" and the LIGHT-Attribute "Clear Kuriboh" from his Graveyard to Special Summon "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning" (3000/2500) from his hand in Attack Position.

"Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning" attacks "Alexandrite Dragon", but Kaiba activates his Set "Negate Attack" in an attempt to negate the attack and end Yugi's Battle Phase. Yugi activates his Set "Seven Tools of the Bandit", paying 1000 LP (Yugi: 3300 → 2300) to negate "Negate Attack" and destroy it. The attack continues and "Alexandrite Dragon" is destroyed (Kaiba: 2400 → 1400). Since "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning" destroyed an opponent's monster in battle, its effect activates, allowing to attack again in a row. "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning" attacks "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" and both monsters are destroyed. Yugi Sets a card.

Turn 6: Seto Kaiba
During his Standby Phase, Kaiba activates the effect of "Azure-Eyes", allowing him to Special Summon a Normal Monster from his Graveyard. He Special Summons "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" (3000/2500) in Attack Position. Kaiba then activates "Card of Demise", drawing until he has five cards in his hand, but he must discard his entire hand during his fifth Standby Phase after activation (as his hand is empty, he draws five cards). He then activates "A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon", returning the Dragon-Type "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" to his hand to destroy all Spell/Trap Cards on the field. Yugi's "Dark Magical Circle" and his Set "Mystic Box" are destroyed.

Kaiba activates "Trade-In", discarding a Level 8 monster to draw two cards. He discards "Blue-Eyes White Dragon". Kaiba then activates "Pot of Desires", banishing the top ten cards of his Deck face-down to draw two cards. Kaiba activates "Silver's Cry" to Special Summon a Dragon-Type Normal Monster from his Graveyard. He Special Summons "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" (3000/2500) in Attack Position. Kaiba activates "Swing of Memories" to Special Summon a Normal Monster from his Graveyard, but it will be destroyed during the End Phase. He Special Summons the other "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" (3000/2500). Kaiba Normal Summons "Luster Dragon" (1900/1600) in Attack Position and switches "Azure-Eyes" to Attack Position.

A "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" attacks "Ebon High Magician", but Yugi activates the latter's effect, detaching an Overlay Unit to activate a Spell/Trap Card from his hand. He activates "Magic Cylinder" from his hand, which negates the attack of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" and inflicts damage to Kaiba equal to his monster's current ATK. Kaiba activates "Enemy Controller", Tributing a monster he controls and gain control of an opponent's monster until the End Phase. He Tributes the attacking "Blue-Eyes" in an attempt to take control of "Ebon High Magician", but Yugi activates the effect of "Ebon High Magician" again, detaching an Overlay Unit to activate "Dark Illusion" from his hand, as a DARK monster he controls is being targeted by an effect. This negates the activation of "Enemy Controller" and destroys it. Since its original target left the field, "Magic Cylinder" resolves without effect.

The second "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" attacks and destroys "Ebon High Magician". As "Ebon High Magician" was sent from the field to the Graveyard, Yugi activates its effect, allowing him to Special Summon a DARK Spellcaster-Eype monster from his Deck and destroy a card his opponent controls. He Special Summons "Dark Magician Girl" (2000/1700) in Attack Position and destroys "Luster Dragon". "Dark Magician Girl" gains 300 ATK for each "Dark Magician" (and "Magician of Black Chaos") in the Graveyards ("Dark Magician Girl": 2000 → 2300). "Azure-Eyes" attacks and destroys "Dark Magician Girl" (Yugi: 2300 → 2100). Kaiba Sets two cards.

Turn 7: Yugi Muto
Yugi activates "Card of Sanctity", allowing both players to draw until they have six cards in their hand. Since they each have no cards in their hand, both Yugi and Kaiba draw six cards. As Yugi drew "Palladium Oracle Mahad, Yugi Special Summons it (2500/2100) from his hand in Attack Position.

Yugi activates "Pot of Greed" to draw two cards. He activates "Pot of Desires", banishing the top ten cards of his Deck face-down to draw two cards. Yugi equips "Mahad" with "Magic Formula", increasing its ATK by 700 ("Mahad": 2500 → 3200). Yugi activates "Diffusion Wave-Motion", paying 1000 LP (Yugi: 2100 → 1100) to allow a Level 7 or higher monster to attack all monsters Kaiba controls once each. He targets "Mahad". "Mahad" attacks and destroys "Blue-Eyes" and "Azure-Eyes" (Kaiba: 1400 → 500). Yugi Sets four cards.

Turn 8: Seto Kaiba
One turn has passed since "Card of Demise" was activated; in four turns Kaiba must discard his entire hand.

Kaiba activates the effect of "The White Stone of Ancients" in his Graveyard, banishing it to return a "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from his Graveyard to his hand. He then reveals "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" in his hand to Special Summon "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon" (3000/2500) from his hand in Attack Position. "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon" is also treated as "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" while it is on the field or in the Graveyard. Kaiba activates the effect of "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon" to destroy a monster his opponent controls, but it cannot attack the turn its effect is used. He destroys "Mahad". As "Mahad" was destroyed, its effect activates, allowing Yugi to Special Summon "Dark Magician" (2500/2100) from his Graveyard in Attack Position. As "Magic Formula" was sent from the field to the Graveyard, Yugi gains 1000 LP (Yugi: 1100 → 2100).

Kaiba activates "Return of the Dragon Lords" to Special Summon a Level 7 or 8 Dragon-Type monster from his Graveyard. He Special Summons "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" (3000/2500) in Attack Position. Kaiba activates "Polymerization", fusing the "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" in his hand with the "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" and "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon" on his field to Fusion Summon "Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" (4500/3800) in Attack Position.

"Neo Blue-Eyes" attacks "Dark Magician", but Yugi activates his face-down "Magical Hats", hiding "Dark Magician" under one of four hats. A replay occurs, and "Neo Blue-Eyes" attacks and destroys an empty hat. As "Neo Blue-Eyes" is the only monster Kaiba controls, he activates its effect, sending a "Blue-Eyes" monster from his Extra Deck to the Graveyard to allow it to attack again. He sends "Blue-Eyes Twin Burst Dragon". "Neo Blue-Eyes" attacks and destroys another empty hat. Kaiba activates the effect of "Neo Blue-Eyes" again, sending "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" from his Extra Deck to the Graveyard to allow it to attack a third time. "Neo Blue-Eyes" attacks and destroys the last empty hat. Since it is the only hat left, Yugi releases "Dark Magician" from its hat.

Kaiba activates "Ring of Destruction", which lets him destroy a monster on the field and inflict damage to both players equal to its ATK. He targets "Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon". He then activates "Ring of Defense", which would reduce the damage inflicted to him to 0, but Yugi activates his face-down "Mystical Refpanel" to apply the effect of "Ring of Defense" to himself instead. Kaiba activates "De-Fusion" to return a Fusion Monster to his Extra Deck and Special Summon its Fusion Materials from his Graveyard. He returns "Neo Blue-Eyes" to his Extra Deck and Special Summons two "Blue-Eyes White Dragons" and "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon" (3000/2500 each) in Attack Position. Since its original target left the field, "Ring of Destruction" resolves without effect. Kaiba activates his Set "Gift of the Mystical Elf" to gain LP equal to the number of monsters currently on the field x 300 (Kaiba: 500 → 1700).

"Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon" attacks "Dark Magician", but Yugi activates his face-down "Mirror Force", destroying all of Kaiba's Attack Position monsters. As his Dragon-Type monsters would be destroyed, Kaiba banishes "Return of the Dragon Lords" from his Graveyard to prevent their destruction. The attack continues and "Dark Magician" is destroyed (Yugi: 2100 → 1600). A "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" attacks directly, but Yugi activates his face-down "Nutrient Z", as he would take 2000 or more damage from a single attack. Yugi gains 4000 LP before damage calculation (Yugi: 1600 → 5600 → 2600). The second "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" attacks directly, but Yugi activates the effect of the "Kuriboh" in his hand, discarding it to reduce the damage to 0.

During his Main Phase 2, Kaiba activates "Dragon's Mirror", allowing him to Fusion Summon a Dragon-Type monster by banishing monsters he controls or in the Graveyard. He banishes his three "Blue-Eyes" monsters to Fusion Summon "Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" (4500/3800) in Attack Position. Kaiba Sets a card.

Turn 9: Yugi Muto
Yugi activates "Monster Recovery" to shuffle all cards he controls (zero) and in his hand (zero) into his Deck, and draw five cards. As Yugi added "Watapon" from his Deck to his hand with a card effect, he Special Summons it (200/300) from his hand in Defense Position. Yugi activates "Premature Burial", paying 800 LP (Yugi: 2600 → 1800) to Special Summon a monster from his Graveyard in Attack Position. He Special Summons "Magician of Dark Illusion" (2100/2500). He activates "Upstart Goblin", drawing a card and increasing Kaiba's LP by 1000 (Kaiba: 1700 → 2700). This activates the effect of "Magician of Dark Illusion", allowing Yugi to Special Summon "Dark Magician" from his Graveyard (2500/2100) in Attack Position.

Yugi Tributes "Magician of Dark Illusion", "Dark Magician", and "Watapon" to Tribute Summon "Slifer the Sky Dragon" (?/?) in Attack Position. "Slifer" gains 1000 ATK for each card in Yugi's hand ("Slifer": ?/? → 2000/2000). Yugi activates "Double Spell" ("Slifer": 2000/2000 → 1000/1000), discarding a Spell Card to activate a Spell Card from Kaiba's Graveyard. He discards "Makiu the Magical Mist" ("Slifer": 1000/1000 → 0/0) and activates Kaiba's "Card of Demise", allowing him to draw until he has five cards in his hand, but he must discard his entire hand during the fifth Standby Phase after activation. ("Slifer": 0/0 → 5000/5000). Because his hand is empty, he draws five cards.

"Slifer" attacks and destroys "Neo Blue-Eyes" (Kaiba: 2700 → 2200). Yugi Sets a card ("Slifer": 5000/5000 → 4000/4000).

Turn 10: Seto Kaiba
Two turns have passed since "Card of Demise" was activated; in three turns Kaiba must discard his entire hand.

Kaiba activates "Lullaby of Obedience", paying 1000 LP (Kaiba: 2200 → 1200) to declare a monster name, and if that monster is in Yugi's Deck, Kaiba can add it from Yugi's Deck to his own hand. Kaiba declares "Obelisk the Tormentor", adding it to his hand.

Kaiba activates his Set "Return from the Different Dimension", paying half his LP (Kaiba: 1200 → 600) to Special Summon as many of his banished monsters as possible. Kaiba Special Summons his three "Blue-Eyes White Dragons", "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon", and "Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End" (3000/2500 each). As Kaiba Summoned monsters, the effect of "Slifer" activates, reducing their ATK by 2000 (3000 → 1000 for all).

Kaiba Tributes his three "Blue-Eyes White Dragons" to Tribute Summon "Obelisk the Tormentor" (4000/4000) in Attack Position, with the effect of "Slifer" reducing its ATK by 2000 ("Obelisk": 4000 → 2000). However, effects that alter ATK and DEF can only affect "Obelisk" until the End Phase.

During the Battle Phase, Kaiba activates the effect of "Obelisk" to Tribute two monsters to increase its own ATK to infinity until the End Phase (2000 → ∞/4000). Kaiba Tributes "Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon" and "Chaos Emperor Dragon". "Obelisk" attacks "Slifer", but Yugi activates his face-down "Zero Gravity" to change the battle positions of all face-up monsters on the field. "Obelisk" is unaffected by card effects while attacking, so only "Slifer" is changed to Defense Position. The attack continues, and "Slifer" is destroyed.

Turn 11: Yugi Muto
One turn has passed since "Card of Demise" was activated; in four turns Yugi must discard his entire hand.

Yugi draws and subsequently activates "The True Name". He now must predict the name of the top card of his Deck and reveal it. If he is correct, he can add that card to his hand, and then also select a DIVINE monster from his Deck and either add to his hand or Special Summon it. Otherwise, he must send the revealed card to the Graveyard.

Yugi predicts the top card of his Deck is "Monster Reborn". He reveals it to be "Monster Reborn", and adds it to his hand along with "The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode" from his Deck. Yugi activates "Monster Reborn" to Special Summon a monster from either Graveyard. He Special Summons "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning" (3000/2500) from his Graveyard in Attack Position. Yugi activates "Dark Magic Veil", paying 1000 LP (Yugi: 1800 → 800) to Special Summon a DARK Spellcaster-Type monster from his hand. He Special Summons "Dark Magician of Chaos" (2800/2600) in Attack Position. As "Dark Magician of Chaos" was Normal or Special Summoned, its effect activates, allowing Yugi to add a Spell Card from his Graveyard to his hand. He adds "Monster Reborn" and activates it, Special Summoning "Dark Magician" (2500/2100) from his Graveyard in Attack Position.

Yugi Tributes "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning", "Dark Magician of Chaos", and "Dark Magician" to Tribute Summon "The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode" (?/?) in Attack Position. It then transforms into "The Winged Dragon of Ra", and its ATK and DEF each become equal to the total ATK and DEF of the Tributed monsters ("Ra": ?/? → 8300/7100). Yugi activates the second effect of "Ra", paying all but 1 of his LP (Yugi: 800 → 1) to increase the ATK and DEF of "Ra" by that amount (8300/7100 → 9099/7899). "Ra" attacks and destroys "Obelisk" (Kaiba: 600 → 0).
