Joey Wheeler and Bandit Keith faced each other in a game of Duel Monsters, during the Duelist Kingdom tournament, in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime. It is based on Katsuya Jonouchi and Keith Howard's Duel from the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga.

Prior Events

After Yugi Muto and Mai Valentine's Duel in the first round of the Duelist Kingdom semi-finals, the Duel between Bandit Keith and Joey Wheeler is about to begin. However, when both participants are asked to present their entry cards, Joey is unable to locate his. He is given until 11:00 to find it, or else he will be disqualified. Joey searches frantically for his card, but breaks down in tears when he can't find it. Mai finds him and gives him her handkerchief, which contains her entry card. Joey returns to the ring and shows "his" entry card, and the Duel is allowed to proceed. Keith is shocked, knowing that he had stolen Joey's card the night before, but doesn't press the issue, since he believes that he'll win anyway.

Turn 4: Joey

Turn 5: Keith
Summons "Launcher Spider" (2200/2500) in Attack Position. Keith attacks and destroys "Giltia the D. Knight" with "Launcher Spider" (Joey: 2000 → 1650).

Turn 6: Joey
Sets both a monster and a Trap Card face-down.

Turn 7: Keith
Keith Sets a card. He also moves to Set a monster, but he purposefully drops it on the field, revealing it to be "Zoa" (2600/1900). He picks the card back up and Sets it properly.

Turn 8: Joey
Joey Summons "Flame Swordsman" (1800/1600) in Attack Position. He then equips "Flame Swordsman" with "Salamandra" (1800 → 2500/1600). Joey attacks "Zoa" with "Flame Swordsman" but Keith activates his Set "Magic Metal Force", transforming his "Zoa" into "Metalzoa" (3000/2300). "Flame Swordsman" is destroyed instead (Joey: 1650 → 1150).

Turn 9: Keith
Keith draws and activates "Stop Defense", switching Joey's face-down "Axe Raider" (1700/1150) into face-up Attack Position. "Metalzoa" attacks "Axe Raider", but Joey activates his Set "Chasm of Spikes", destroying "Metalzoa" and inflicting 1/4 of it's ATK as damage to Keith (Keith: 2000 → 1250).

Turn 10: Joey
Joey Sets a card, changes "Axe Raider" back into Defense Position, then Summons "Garoozis" (1800/1500) in Attack Position. "Garoozis" attacks and destroys "Pendulum Machine" (Keith: 1250 → 1200).

Turn 11: Keith
"Launcher Spider" attacks "Garoozis", but Joey activates his Set "Kunai with Chain, increasing the ATK of "Garoozis" by 500 (1800 → 2300). "Launcher Spider" is destroyed instead (Keith: 1200 → 1100).

Joey passes his turn.

Turn 13: Keith
Keith Sets a card and Summons "Barrel Dragon" (2600/2200) in Attack Position. "Barrel Dragon" attacks and destroys "Garoozis" (Joey: 1150 → 850).

Turn 14: Joey
Joey Summons "Baby Dragon" (1200/700) in Attack Position, then activates "Time Wizard" (500/400) as a Spell Card. He succeeds with the roulette ability of "Time Wizard", causing every monster on the field to age rapidly. "Barrel Dragon" rusts and loses 800 ATK and DEF (2600 → 1800/2200 → 1400), while "Baby Dragon" ages into "Thousand Dragon" (2400/2000). "Thousand Dragon" attacks and destroys "Barrel Dragon", but Keith activates his Set "Time Machine", negating the battle damage and allowing him to revive "Barrel Dragon" as it was at the beginning of the turn (2600/2000).

Turn 15: Keith
"Barrel Dragon" attacks and destroys "Thousand Dragon" (Joey: 850 → 650).

Turn 16: Joey
Sets a monster face-down.

Turn 17: Keith
Keith Summons "Slot Machine" (2000/2300) in Attack Position and destroy Joey's face-down "Kojikocy" (1500/1200) with "Barrel Dragon".

Turn 18: Joey
Joey Sets a card and Summons "Red-Eyes B. Dragon" (2400/2000) in Attack Position.

Turn 19: Keith
Keith attacks "Red-Eyes B. Dragon" with "Barrel Dragon", but Joey activates his Set "Copycat, letting him copy the effect of Keith's "Magic Metal Force" in the Graveyard, transforming "Red-Eyes B. Dragon" into "Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon" (2800/2400). "Barrel Dragon" is destroyed instead (Keith: 1100 → 900). Keith Sets a card and changes "Slot Machine" into Defense Position.

Turn 20: Joey
Joey Sets a card attacks "Slot Machine" with "Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon", but Keith activates his Set "7 Completed", and uses it to increase the DEF of "Slot Machine" by 700 (2000/2300 → 3000), causing Joey's attack to backfire (Joey: 650 → 450).

Turn 21: Keith
Keith slips a second copy of "7 Completed" out from his wristband into his hand, claiming he has drawn it. He activates it, using it to increase the ATK of "Slot Machine" by 700 (2000 → 2700/3000). Keith then Summons "Blast Sphere" (2900/1400) in Attack Position, which latches itself onto Joey's "Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon". At the end of the turn, "Blast Sphere" will self-destruct, inflicting the difference in ATK between the two monsters as damage to whoever controls the weaker monster. As Keith ends his turn, however, Joey activates his Set "Dragon Nails", increasing the ATK of his own monster by 600 before "Blast Sphere" activated its effect (2800 → 3400/2400). Since his monster's ATK was higher than the ATK of "Blast Sphere", Keith takes damage instead of Joey (Keith: 900 → 400), and his "Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon" isn't destroyed. At this point, Keith pulls out a third copy of "7 Completed" from his other wristband, pretending he had had it in his hand all along, and activates it to increase the ATK of "Slot Machine" by another 700 (2700 → 3400/3000).

Turn 22: Joey
Joey draws and Sets a card.

Turn 23: Keith
Keith activates "Pillager", forcing Joey to reveal all the cards in his hand and allowing Keith to add one of them to his own hand. Keith takes "Shield & Sword", and activates it immediately, switching the ATK and DEF of all monsters on the field (Slot Machine: 3400 → 3000/3000 → 3400) (Red-Eyes: 3400 → 2400/2400 → 3400).

Keith changes "Slot Machine" into Attack Position, then attacks and destroys "Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon". He begins proclaiming his victory, only for Joey to reveal that he had activated his Set "Graverobber", allowing him to activate Keith's "Time Machine" from the Graveyard, negating the battle damage and allowing Joey to revive his "Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon" as it was at the beginning of the turn (3400/3000).

Turn 24: Joey
Joey attacks and destroys the weakened "Slot Machine" with "Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon" (Keith: 400 → 0).

Aftermath

Keith protests the results of the Duel, saying that it shouldn't count because Joey used an entry card that wasn't his own. Joey admits that Keith is correct, but asks Keith to explain how he could have known. Maximillion Pegasus says that it was obvious Keith stole Joey's card, and also reveals to the onlookers how Keith had also cheated during the Duel. Pegasus orders his guards to take Keith away, then congratulates Joey for a well-fought duel. Keith would not take this lying down, however, and attempts to force Pegasus into giving him the prize money. Pegasus, for his part, opens a trap door beneath Keith, leading Keith out of the castle and into the ocean.
