Speed Duel
Speed Duel (スピードデュエル Supīdo Dyueru) is an alternate, specialized format of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game and Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. It is designed to be a simplified, rapid-style version of the game.[1]
Speed Duel was first introduced in the "Duel Terminal" system, although Duel Terminal Speed Duels have slightly different rules to later Speed Duels. Speed Duel was later used as the format of the video games Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Saikyo Card Battle and Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links. Speed Duels are prominently featured in the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime, where Duels that take place in the Data Storm in LINK VRAINS are conducted as Speed Duels.[2]
In the TCG, a Speed Duel format inspired by Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links was launched in November 2018.[1]

TCG
Speed Duels in the TCG were first promoted to stores in emails looking for stores interested in running a Speed Dueling event, to be held from October 4–17, 2017. Interested stores were sent Demo Speed Dueling kits including three sets of six Decks to be used.
The Speed Duel format premiered at YCS Pasadena in November 2018.[3][4] The first sets were released in January 2019.
Rules
Speed Duel follows the stardard Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG rules, with the following differences:[5][6]
- Each player begins the Duel with 4000 LP.
- Each player begins the Duel with 4 cards in the starting hand.
- Main Deck size is 20 to 30 cards.
- Extra Deck size is up to 6 cards.[6]
- Side Deck size is up to 6 cards.[6]
- Each player can use up to 1 Skill Card.[6]
- Each player has 3 Main Monster Zones, 3 Spell & Trap Zones, 1 Field Zone and a Graveyard.
- There are no Extra Monster Zones.
- There is no Main Phase 2.
Card legality
In the TCG, only cards marked with the Speed Duel Logo are legal for use in Speed Duels. This logo appears as a watermark in the background of the text box for every Speed Duel card. In addition, with the exception of cards released in the debut Speed Duel Starter Decks, the logo is also printed as text above the top-left of the text box of non-Skill Cards.
With the exception of Skill Cards, Speed Duel cards are legal in both Speed Duel and non-Speed Duel tournaments in the TCG.

Double Up!
Double Up! is an alternate format of Speed Duel where Duelists are allowed to use 2 Skill Cards instead of 1. It was first introduced with the release of Speed Duel: Battle City Box.
OCG
Master Rules 3
These Speed Duel rules were introduced in the OCG with the release of Starter Deck 2016.[7][8]
- Each player begins the Duel with 4000 LP.
- Each player begins the Duel with 4 cards in the starting hand.
- Main Deck size is 20 cards.
- Extra Deck size is up to 5 cards.
- Each player has 3 Monster Zones, 3 Spell & Trap Zones, 2 Pendulum Zones, and 1 Field Zone.
- There is no Main Phase 2.
- Like a normal Duel, the first player does not draw on their first turn, the hand size limit is 6, both players can have an active Field Spell Card and there can only be 3 cards with the same name in both the Main Deck and the Extra Deck.

New Master Rules
With the release of Starter Deck 2017 and the introduction of the New Master Rules, the Speed Duel rules for the OCG were updated. 2 Extra Monster Zones were added and the Pendulum Zones were removed.[9]
- Each player begins the Duel with 4000 LP.
- Each player begins the Duel with 4 cards in the starting hand.
- Main Deck size is 20 cards.
- Extra Deck size is up to 5 cards.
- Each player has 3 Main Monster Zones, 3 Spell & Trap Zones, and 1 Field Zone.
- There are 2 Extra Monster Zones aligned in front of the leftmost and rightmost Main Monster Zones.
- There is no Main Phase 2.
- Like a normal Duel, the first player does not draw on their first turn, the hand size limit is 6, both players can have an active Field Spell Card and there can only be 3 cards with the same name in both the Main Deck and the Extra Deck.
Card legality
In the OCG, Speed Duel is a format that can be played with any OCG card. Only two products were released specifically for this format:
Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime, Speed Duels are a type of Duel played in LINK VRAINS where players use Duel Boards to ride the Data Storm.
Speed Duels had disappeared for many years when the Data Storm ostensibly ceased to exist, relegating Speed Duels to legends. However, when Yusaku Fujiki captured Ai, Ai released the Data Storm, thus reviving these Duels.[10]

- Both players only have three Main Monster Zones and three Spell & Trap Zones. The Extra Monster Zones are aligned in front of the leftmost and rightmost Main Monster Zones.
- Each player's starting hand consists of four cards.
- There is no Main Phase 2.
- Once per Duel, each player can use a Skill.
Speed Duel in video games
- Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Saikyo Card Battle: The game uses the OCG Master Rules 3 Speed Duel rules, but it does not have a Field Zone.
- Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links: The game uses the same Speed Duel rules as the TCG, although the player can have up to seven cards in their Extra Deck, after unlocking the sixth and seventh slots in-game by performing a total of 100 Synchro Summons and 100 Xyz Summons. These additional Extra Deck slots were added with the release of Duel World (5D's) and Duel World (ZEXAL), respectively.
