"Morphtronic", known as "Deformer" (D Difōmā) in the Japanese version, is an archetype of cards used by Leo in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and introduced in Crossroads of Chaos. The archetype includes various Types and Attributes, but most members are EARTH and/or Machine, with several being LIGHT and/or Thunder.

They are depicted in how they "morph" when they change their Battle Position, which changes their effect(s) and appearance (humanoid form in Attack Position; item form in Defense Position). They transform into small "electronic" household items, like magnets and mobile phones. Despite their appearances, "Morphtronics" are not all Machine-Type monsters and they also represent a wide array of Attributes.

This archetype is related to the "Power Tool" archetype, with some overlapping support arising from their use by the same character in the anime. Some cards in this archetype are designed to facilitate the summon of "Power Tool" monsters and support them once they are on the field.

Playing style
 +
The "Morphtronic" archetype revolves around manipulating its monsters' battle positions. Each "Morphtronic" Main Deck monster has two on-field effects, and each effect corresponds to one battle position (Attack or Defense), and is only usable while the monster is in that battle position. Most "Morphtronic" monsters and support cards have battle-related effects, with the Attack Position effects being more attack oriented and Defense Position effects being more defense oriented; as the game's power level increased, these battle-focused cards have become functionally obsolete.
 +
 +
A small number of "Morphtronic" monsters, instead of having obsolete battle-focused effects, have effects focused on swarming monsters (revolving around rolling a die and excavating cards equal to the result), and these monsters form the core of the current "Morphtronic" playstyle, which revolves around Synchro and  Link Spamming. These monsters are "Celfon", "Smartfon", and "Telefon"; "Scopen" and "Remoten" can also facilitate monster swarming, but are generally less used. Telefon in particular is very potent as a three off, as it is always able to summon another copy of itself from the GY as it is a Level 1 monster and thus its level will always be equal to or lower than the die result of its effect.
 +
 +
While in Attack Position:
 +
* "Celfon" can roll a die and excavate cards equal to the result, and Special Summon 1 excavated Level 4 or lower "Morphtronic" monster.
 +
* "Smartfon" can roll a die and excavate cards equal to the result, and add 1 excavated "Morphtronic" card to the hand.
 +
* "Telefon" can roll a die and Special Summon 1 "Morphtronic" monster from the GY whose Level is equal to or lower than the result.

Playing style
+
All three effects are soft once per turn, meaning that multiple copies of these monsters can each use their effects individually to repeatedly generate advantage. Most significantly, multiple copies of "Telefon" can set up an infinite loop of Link/Synchro materials by itself, by constantly summoning other copies of "Telefon" from the Graveyard.
"Morphtronics" are low in Level and have low ATK and DEF, but many have effects that can rapidly boost their collective power. Amassing enough collective power, "Morphtronics" can produce powerful OTKs and strong defensive locks.

A common strategy for using "Morphtronics" is the "Morphtronic" Direct Attack OTK. This strategy focuses on using "Celfon" to swarm the field. The play style finishes the game after swarming by switching "Boarden", from Defense Position to Attack Position (allowing "Morphtronic" monsters to attack directly), for a one turn kill. Together, "Radion", "Boomboxen", "Boarden" and "Celfon" deal exactly 8000 direct damage. With the help of the swarming effect from "Celfon" and the attack negation effect of"Boomboxen", these four "Morphtonics" should be fairly easy to get out given the right probabilities due to the effect of "Celfon".
+
In particular, "Telefon" alone brings enough swarming power to establish a field of Co-linked Link Monsters. One example of such a field is "Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess" in the Extra Monster Zone, "Tri-Gate Wizard" beneath "Apollusa", "G Golem Invalid Dolmen" to its left, and any of the "Knightmare" Link Monsters to the right of "Tri-Gate Wizard". "Invalid Dolmen" is especially potent here as it grants excellent protection to its co-link partners, while "G Golem Crystal Heart" and "G Golem Stubborn Menhir" are able to special summon their link material on summon and thus extend combos.

Another way to OTK which is often faster than the above mentioned one if you draw the right hand, is the "Morphtronic" Synchro OTK. Using "Power Tool Dragon" equipped with "Double Tool C&D", attack directly for 3300 damage. Then attack directly again this time with "Ancient Sacred Wyvern" for 5400 damage to win. This may sound like a challenge to pull off, but with the right resources it is easily possible. By recycling your Tuners with "Morphtronic Repair Unit" and "Junk Box" you can Summon the necessary Synchro Monsters to win. In order for this OTK to work, your opponent must, of course, have no monsters and defensive Spell and Trap Cards. All of these locks, even the worst, shut down nearly all of your opponent's attack options. With these locks it is very easy for "Morphtronics" to perform an OTK as their attack position effects can all be used at once by switching them to Attack Position, such as "Boarden" being able to protect other "Morphtronic" monsters while it is in Defense Position, and switching to Attack Position, allowing all the "Morphtronic" monsters to attack directly.
+
Synchro-based "Morphtronic" builds are able to use cards such as "Cupid Pitch" and "Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon" to perform combos using Telefon for gaining access to high level Synchro monsters, such as "Power Tool Braver Dragon", "Borreload Savage Dragon, or "Baronne de Fleur". As "Morphtronic Earfon" is a Level 4 EARTH non-Tuner monster, it is able to be used as a stepping stone to summon "Naturia Beast". However, such builds will quickly discover that options are limited for in-theme non-Tuners that can contribute to plays. Accordingly, a Synchro-based "Morphtronic" build will often need off-theme cards to facilitate additional non-Tuner summons. One method is by summoning a Spellcaster Link monster, such as "Relinquished Anima", and using it to fulfil the summon condition of Awakening of the Possessed - Nefariouser Archfiend, which can summon "Earfon" or "Gadget Gamer" from the GY as additional non-Tuners to use. Another is by tributing "Telefon" for the summon of "Epigonen, the Impersonation Invader", providing level 1 and level 7 non-Tuners. Many other options also exist.

With these Spells and Traps, all the counters put on "Morphtronic Map" can aid an OTK if you are unable to have all four essential "Morphtronic" monsters for the direct attack OTK.
+
Regardless of whether "Telefon" was used to facilitate Link or Synchro plays, any remaining "Telefon" can then be used at the conclusion of a combo as material for the Xyz Summon of Rank 1 Monster Cards, giving the deck a way to search a potent Hand trap in "D.D. Crow", with "Lyrilusc - Recital Starling", or alternatively seek further interruptions with "Lyrilusc - Ensemblue Robin".

+
The starter for this swarming-based "Morphtronic" playstyle is "Gadget Gamer", who can search for a Level 1 Machine (which all the above phone-formed "Morphtronic" monsters are), and then Special Summon it and "Gadget Hauler" from the Deck; this immediately sets up a Level 7 Synchro Summon (tying the deck's playstyle to the "Power Tool" Synchro Monsters).
<!-- This is not an exact Decklist. Do not add multiples or staples.-->

 +
Further swarming can be achieved through "Machine Duplication", "Junk Box", "Morphtronic Converter", "Dimension Dice", "Morphtronic Repair Unit" and "D.D.R. - Different Dimension Reincarnation". "Power Tool Dragon" can be used to search for the latter two.

Morphtronic Equip
The classical idea of "Morphtronics" is the way that Leo from the 5D's anime uses them. This way is by fully utilizing Equip Spell Cards. The main monsters for this type of Deck are "Power Tool Dragon" and the "Morphtronic Vacuumen". Once again, like the burn Deck, "Forcefield" and "Cameran" are quite useful for defense. For attack, your main power will be "Morphtronic Videon" who gains a extra 800 attack for card equipped to it.

The effect of "Power Tool" lets you search for Equip Spell Cards from your Deck. "Vacuumen" has two uses of equipping. While in Defense Position you can steal one of your opponents monsters and equip it to "Vacuumen" and in Attack Position you can get rid of a card equipped to "Vacuumen" to deal 500 points of damage to your opponent.

Another good card to use with "Power Tool Dragon" is "Power Break". It is a Trap card that returns up to 3 Equip Spell Cards from your field or Graveyard to your Deck, allowing you to utilize the effect of "Power Tool Dragon" again. In addition to that, your opponent takes 500 points of damage for each Equip Spell Card returned.

Another good combo is to use "Jinzo" and "Power Tool Dragon". If You manage to get "Jinzo" out on the field them you can use "Power Tool Dragon" to help get "Amplifier" equipped to "Jinzo", and then you have 2 powerful monsters on the field and it stops your opponent from using Traps.

Morphtronic OTK
The "Morphtronic" OTK Deck is by far one the most popular of the "Morphtronic" Decks because it is one of the fastest and most consistent. The main monsters used in this type of Deck are "Morphtronic Boarden", "Morphtronic Radion", and "Morphtronic Boomboxen". "Morphtronic" OTK relies on having all of the above monsters on the field in Attack Position and attacking your opponent directly using the Attack Position effect of "Boarden".

"Morphtronic Forcefield" will come in handy as well as "Morphtronic Bind". One of the most versatile parts of this Deck is "Boarden". The Defense Position effect of "Boarden" means that no "Morphtronic" monsters can be destroyed by battle.

Morphtronic Synchro
+
Weaknesses
The "Morphtronic" Synchro Deck is the fastest of the "Morphtronic" Decks. "Morphtronics" currently have three Tuner monsters: "Morphtronic Scopen", "Morphtronic Remoten" and "Morphtronic Lantron". "Scopen" and "Remoten" are Level 3 and are completely different from each other. While in Attack Position, "Scopen" can Special Summon any Level 4 "Morphtronic" monster from your hand and while in Defense Position it is treated as a Level 4 monster. "Remoten", on the other hand, can (while in Attack Position) banish a "Morphtronic" monster in your Graveyard to add another "Morphtronic" monster of the same Level from your Deck to your hand. While in Defense Position, you can send a "Morphtronic" from your hand to the Graveyard to get a "Morphtronic" of the same Level from the Graveyard into your hand. Both of these effects have their own uses, while neither is particularly better than the other. "Lantron" can protect you from the damage you take from opponent's card effects while in Attack Position and from battle damage while in Defense Position. It's Level 1 Tuner monster so if you have "Power Tool Dragon" on your side of the field you can Synchro Summon "Life Stream Dragon".

Due to the Deck's reliance on Special Summoning by card effects, floodgate cards like "Lose 1 Turn", "Summon Breaker", "Skill Drain", "Power Filter", "Macro Cosmos", and "Anti-Spell Fragrance" cause issues for the Deck. The archetype also lacks many first-turn plays after their initial Normal Summon, due to various cards, such as as "Remoten" and "Smartfon", only working if there are "Morphtronic" monsters in the Graveyard. The Synchro and Link Spam variants can also quickly run out of cards in their Extra Deck, and thus may not have any moves to use on subsequent turns. These problems can be mitigated with cards such as "Foolish Burial", "Machina Fortress", and "Urgent Schedule" to fill the Graveyard, or  "Machina Overdrive" and "Pot of Avarice" for resource recycling.

"Scopen" provides faster Deck speed, but both should be used in a Synchro Deck. "Scopen" allows for easy Level 7 Synchro Summoning with his Attack Position effect and if you have a "Gadget Driver" you can then use its Defense Position ability for a Level 8 Synchro Summon. "Remoten", while not as fast, is equally as powerful, especially later in the game. "Scopen" is best for early game and "Remoten" tends to be more useful mid to late game.

"Remoten" is especially useful when your hand is out of usable Level 4 "Morphtronic" monsters, which tend to be the backbone of the "Morphtronic" Synchro Deck.

Once again, like every other "Morphtronic" Deck, "Celfon" is invaluable. "Boarden" also might come in handy as a good back up plan and for Level 6 Synchro Monsters. Don't worry about many "Morphtronic" Defense cards ("Morphtransition", etc.) even though "Morphtronic Barrier" may prove useful. "Morphtronic Accelerator" is always useful and is very important. "Junk Box" will also prove useful.

Morphtronic Quasar / Sifr / Blazar
Years before it's initial release in 2008 and until 2011, the archetype have been played using the standard build of heavily relying on synchro swarm and using equip spells to create its win condition. With the release of Shooting Quasar Dragon in 2011, the deck have seen change in play from OTK to heavy synchro control.

Among all the Morphtronic builds, the Quasar Variant is the fastest and the most consistent. This variant focuses on hitting the field fast-turn-one with synchro monsters that can dominate the game with negation and control while netting multiple pluses on the way.

The Quasar variant also usually go first to avoid back row cards and to also put pressure to the opponent with an already heavy established build.

With the release of Stardust Sifr Divine Dragon in 2015 and Cosmic Blazar Dragon in 2017, with the same summoning requirements as of Shooting Quasar Dragon, the player can choose between the three on which one to include in the extra deck. Often times, the Quasar variant can run 2 to 3 Shooting Quasar Dragon which allows the player to include at least one copy of the recently released dragons in the extra deck.

Weaknesses
Due to these monster's effects depending on what Battle Position they are in, cards like "Final Attack Orders" and "Level Limit - Area A" will destroy their play style. Also, since almost every "Morphtronic" monster is Level of 3 or lower, cards like "Infinite Dismissal", "Nanobreaker" and "Possessed Dark Soul" would help prevent the opponent from swarming you with them. "Deck Devastation Virus", "Power Filter" and "King Tiger Wanghu" will completely cripple you due to the fact that all "Morphtronic" monsters have less than 1500 ATK. "Skill Drain" and "Mind Drain" also threatens heavily against their monster effect reliance, as does "Effect Veiler".

Since nearly all "Morphtronic" monsters are Machine-Type monsters, "System Down" is an extremely dangerous card for this Deck. Furthermore it would also render cards like "Junk Box" and "Machine Assembly Line" useless. As most commonly used "Morphtronic" monsters are Machine-Type monsters, "Chimeratech Fortress Dragon" can severely cripple a good field of "Morphtronic" monsters. "Power Tool Dragon" and "Morphtronic Forcefield" cannot prevent this because they are all being used as Fusion Material Monsters.
+
This Deck as a whole leans heavily on resolving a handful of monster effects repeatedly across a turn by reviving monsters with soft once per turn effects. Accordingly, cards that disrupt the graveyard, such as "D.D. Crow" and "Called by the Grave" threaten to completely end this Deck's turns. With few ways of retrieving banished cards, there may be few ways to recover if only one "Telefon" remains.

There are also a lot of Equip Spell Cards in this series and the "Morphtronics" will often rely on them for big plays. This can be hampered with cards like "Dark Highlander", "Eternal Rest", "Really Eternal Rest", "The Emperor's Holiday", "Armored Glass", "Armor Break", "Disarmament" and "Collected Power".
+
As with many Decks, many common hand traps such as "Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring", "Nibiru, the Primal Being", and "Maxx "C"" (OCG-only) are always a looming danger. "Maxx "C"", however, can be a double-edged sword, as players using the "Telefon" loop while it is in effect can force the opponent to deplete every card in their Deck, though at the risk of them drawing into another potentially turn-ending counter. "Nibiru" also does not stop the "Telefon" loop if it is used too early, as any method of reviving a "Telefon" will simply cause the loop to begin anew.

 +
"Power Tool Braver Dragon" is an important end board card, but its power can be reduced easily with simple backrow removal cards like "Harpie's Feather Duster", "Galaxy Cyclone", or "Twin Twisters". With most "Morphtronic" monsters being Machine monsters and being reliant on the Graveyard, "System Down" and "Chimeratech Fortress Dragon" can prove devastating to the Deck, without non-Machine cards present.

"Morphtronic", known as "Deformer" (ディフォーマー Difōmā) in the Japanese version, is an archetype of cards used by Leo in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and introduced in Crossroads of Chaos. The archetype includes various Types and Attributes, but most members are EARTH and/or Machine, with several being LIGHT and/or Thunder.

They are depicted in how they "morph" when they change their battle position, which changes their effect(s) and appearance (humanoid in Attack Position; item in Defense Position). They transform into small "electronic" household items, like magnets and mobile phones.

This archetype is related to the "Power Tool" archetype, with some overlapping support arising from their use by the same character in the anime. Some cards in this archetype are designed to facilitate the summon of "Power Tool" monsters and support them once they are on the field.

Playing style[edit]

The "Morphtronic" archetype revolves around manipulating its monsters' battle positions. Each "Morphtronic" Main Deck monster has two on-field effects, and each effect corresponds to one battle position (Attack or Defense), and is only usable while the monster is in that battle position. Most "Morphtronic" monsters and support cards have battle-related effects, with the Attack Position effects being more attack oriented and Defense Position effects being more defense oriented; as the game's power level increased, these battle-focused cards have become functionally obsolete.

While in Attack Position:

 • "Celfon" can roll a die and excavate cards equal to the result, and Special Summon 1 excavated Level 4 or lower "Morphtronic" monster.
 • "Smartfon" can roll a die and excavate cards equal to the result, and add 1 excavated "Morphtronic" card to the hand.
 • "Telefon" can roll a die and Special Summon 1 "Morphtronic" monster from the GY whose Level is equal to or lower than the result.

Weaknesses[edit]
