Valentine, Mai

Mai Valentine is a Duelist Construct of Mai Valentine from the Yu-Gi-Oh! series in the Virtual Dueling System. She is also the opponent that the player faced in Stage 4-4 of the Classic Campaign mode in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Generation. The player has to defeat her in a Duel in order to unlock the next stage and progress Campaign mode.

Appearance

As a Duelist Construct, her appearance is based on Mai Valentine, and the outfit is what she wore during the Battle City arc in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series.

Etymology

Her name "Mai Valentine" is a pun of "My Valentine". Individually, her given name "Mai" means "dance" in Japanese while her surname "Valentine" comes from the Latin word valens, which means "strong and healthy".

Rewards

There are a total of six rewards that the player can earn and received after defeating the Duel Construct in a Duel. The first two rewards are cards that come from the Duel Construct's Deck and the third reward is a recipe for their Deck. Then the fourth, fifth and sixth rewards repeated the same process of the three earlier rewards, but in a harder difficulty with a different Deck. In addition, the sixth reward will allow the player to have the Duel Construct's avatar and the ability to Duel them anytime between the two difficulty.

Deck

In the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series, during the Duelist Kingdom arc, Mai uses a Deck centered around the card "Harpie Lady" and cards whose have close relation to "Harpie Lady" by card effects. These "Harpie Lady" related cards have the effects to increases the ATK of "Harpie Lady" ("Cyber Shield") and Summons more copies of "Harpie Lady" ("Elegant Egotist"). This Deck also have cards that destroy Spells and/or Traps like "De-Spell" and "Harpie's Feather Duster". During the Battle City arc, Mai starts to use "Amazoness" cards alongside with her "Harpie Lady" Deck, and relies on cards that can protected her monsters from being attacked and destroyed.

In Duel Generation, the Duelist Construct plays a Deck called Amazoness which follow the same idea of using "Amazoness" cards with the card "Harpie Lady" like Mai's Deck in the Battle City arc. The "Amazoness" cards in this Deck relies on increasing either their own ATK ("Amazoness Paladin" and "Amazoness Trainee") or the ATK of "Amazoness" monsters ("Amazoness Fighting Spirit" and "Amazoness Village"). This Deck also relies cards that can protects "Amazoness" monsters from destruction like "Amazoness Queen", "Amazoness Scouts" and "Amazoness Heirloom". "Queen" will protected "Amazoness" monsters on the owner's field from battle destruction while "Heirloom" will also do the same as the effect of "Queen", but it can be done once, and in addition, "Heirloom" can allow the equipped monster to destroy the attack target after damage calculation. Lastly, "Scouts" can Tribute itself to protect face-up "Amazoness" monsters currently on the owner's field from being targeted by monster effects and destroyed by card effects the turn its effect was activated.

After the player defeat Mai's Amazoness Deck three times, the next difficulty and Deck is unlocked. This Deck features the cards from the "Harpie" archetype which Mai did used in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series, but it was only with the card "Harpie Lady" and cards associated with "Harpie Lady". Also, the "Harpie" cards being used comes from the booster pack Lord of the Tachyon Galaxy.

The Harpie Deck focuses on swarming the field with "Harpie Lady" and using Spells/Traps to destroy the various cards on the field. Some "Harpie" Effect Monsters with the name "Harpie Lady" have the condition to either treated its name as "Harpie Lady" ("Cyber Harpie Lady" and "Harpie Lady 1"), or have its name becomes "Harpie Lady" while on the field or Graveyard ("Harpie Channeler" and "Harpie Queen"). Because of the name condition or card effect, these "Harpie Lady" cards can be affected by the Spells/Traps effect of "Elegant Egotist", "Harpie's Hunting Ground", "Hysteric Sign" and "Hysteric Party". "Elegant Egotist" can used be on a cards that is treated as/becomes "Harpie Lady", and Summon either "Cyber Harpie Lady" or "Harpie Lady 1" since these two have the "Harpie Lady" name condition, or "Harpie Lady Sisters" from the owner's hand or Deck. "Hunting Ground" will always activated whenever a "Harpie Lady" or "Harpie Lady Sisters" is Normal or Special Summoned, and as such, these "Harpie Lady" cards will triggered the effect of "Hunting Ground" to destroy 1 Spell/Trap on the field. "Hysteric Sign" will add 3 "Harpie" cards with different names from the owner's Deck to their hand when it is sent to the Graveyard, and if its other effect wasn't activated that turn, only one "Harpie Lady" card with the name condition can be added, since it can't uses its original name. Lastly, "Hysteric Party" can be activated by discarding 1 card from the hand to Special Summon as many "Harpie Lady" as possible from the owner's Graveyard, and because of this, any "Harpie Lady" cards with the name condition or card effect can be Special Summoned by the effect of "Party". Also, these "Harpie Lady" cards with the name condition or card effect can be used to strength the signature card "Harpie's Pet Dragon" whose effect raise its own ATK and DEF by 300 for each "Harpie Lady" on the field. The Spells/Traps that can destroys cards are "Dark Hole" (monsters), the already mentioned "Hunting Ground" (Spells/Traps), "Mystical Space Typhoon" (Spell/Trap), "Smashing Ground" (opponent's monster with the highest DEF), "Bottomless Trap Hole" (opponent's monster with 1500 or more ATK), "Icarus Attack" (2 cards), and "Mirror Force" (opponent's monsters in Attack Position).
