Yugi and Joey's Promise Duel is a Duel played between Yugi Muto and Joey Wheeler after the events of the Battle City tournament, as part of a promise they made at the beginning of said tournament.

Events[edit]

Before Battle City, Joey Wheeler was ambushed and trounced by a back alley thug, losing "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" in the process before the tournament even began. Once the tournament properly began, Joey's first move was to seek out the man who beat him and reclaim his lost card, as well as his lost dignity. However, the man, revealed to be one of Marik Ishtar's Rare Hunters, no longer had an interest in Joey, having already claimed his rarest card. Yugi Muto, however, was deemed a more worthwhile target, and so the Rare Hunter challenged him instead, with "Red-Eyes" on the line.

After his victory over the Rare Hunter, Yugi attempted to return "Red-Eyes Black Dragon", but was refused by Joey, who claimed that he hadn't earned it back yet. At that time, he made Yugi promise that at the end of the tournament, they would have their own separate Duel to determine if Joey was really worthy of having "Red-Eyes" back. At the end of Battle City, once the duo had said their goodbyes to everyone leaving Domino City after the tournament, the two Duelists met again and made good on their promise, and their Duel began. However, nothing is known of the actual Duel itself - neither cards used, strategies undertaken, nor the final outcome.

The only thing known of the Duel is that the next time "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" is seen again (in the Waking the Dragons arc of the anime or the battle with Zorc Necrophades in the manga), it is seen in Joey's possession rather than Yugi's. The ultimate outcome of the Duel is unknown, but regardless of victors and losers, Joey evidently proved himself worthy of reclaiming "Red-Eyes Black Dragon".
