"Raidraptor" monsters resemble various genus and species of birds of prey, albeit with a mechanized appearance and equipped with weaponry. Most of the Level 4 monsters (with the exception of "Raidraptor - Necro Vulture") are based on the lanius, a genus of passerine birds in the shrike family, while most of the Extra Deck monsters are based on falcons. Additional monster support includes cards based on vultures, eagles, and strixes, a genus of earless owls. The Level 3 and Rank 3 monsters are based on eagles, while the members based on vultures and strixes cover a wide range of Levels and Ranks. This naming pattern can be likened to codenames of different members belonging to the same military unit.

Overall, "Raidraptors" run in a manner similar to the "Blackwing" archetype. They are both DARK Winged Beast archetypes that can swarm the field with a wide range of flexible effects, but they rely mostly on their proficiency in battle to achieve victory against the opponent. Some "Blackwing" monsters such as "Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite" fit well inside the deck, due to their Level or effects, while also being searchable by "Force Strix" and "Arsenal Falcon".
+
Cleanup
 +
Much like other Xyz-based archetypes, this Deck focused on swarming the field with necessary monsters to perform Xyz Summon. Most of their monsters have effects that allows them to be Summoned rapidly to the field, but the easiest method for them to do so usually involves cards from player's hand (such as "Raidraptor - Vanishing Lanius"), and therefore, the player needs to keep many resources in the hand to start their initial strategy.
 +
Their main Xyz Monster, designed for this sole purpose, is "Raidraptor - Force Strix", and it's the most important Xyz Monster in the Deck. It allows the player to build up early card advantage by constantly searching the majority of their monsters, while also serves as the Deck's first line of defense. In order to Summon this card consistently and efficiently, cards like "Raidraptor - Tribute Lanius" are generally recommended. When used in conjunction with either "Raidraptor - Fuzzy Lanius" or "Raidraptor - Mimicry Lanius", "Tribute Lanius" essentially allows the Summon of "Force Strix" with just one card.
 +
The majority of their Main Deck monsters usually have effects that can be activated during the Main Phase of the turn they are Normal or Special Summoned, and most of them are beneficial effects that helps them Summoning more monsters to the field. However, some of them (for example, "Fuzzy Lanius" or "Raidraptor - Call") restricts the player from Special Summoning cards other than "Raidraptor" monsters if their effect is used, so careful consideration and planning ahead is necessary to utilize those cards to their maximum potential.
 +
Besides "Force Strix", they also have many other Xyz Monsters within their arsenal, and some of them specifically designed to eliminate multiple threats at once, particularly Special Summoned monsters. The majority of them also able of inflicting massive amounts of damage whether through their effects alone, directly or indirectly, or through attacking multiple times.

Using the search effect of "Raidraptor - Force Strix" is this archetype's opening move to add "Raidraptor - Vanishing Lanius" to Special Summon other "Raidraptor" Monsters from the Hand or "Raidraptor - Fuzzy Lanius" that can replace itself after being sent to the Graveyard. Most of the time, the deck's initial plays is to Summon multiple copies of "Force Strixes" to keep a steady number of cards in hand as preparations for all-out assault in later turns. "Tribute Lanius" is greatly helpful in this aspect, since it can help gathering cards necessary (in conjunction with "Mimicry Lanius") to Summon your "Force Strix" as early as possible.
+
Rank-Up
 +
This archetype also heavily supports Rank-Up strategy, due to high number of "Rank-Up-Magic" Spell Cards associated with the archetype. Some of the "Rank-Up-Magic" cards designed exclusively for this archetype also have effects that allow them to Special Summon monsters from the Graveyard before Rank-Up (such as "Rank-Up-Magic Soul Shave Force"), and some of them even have secondary in-Graveyard effects that helps in recovery aspect, in some way or another (such as "Rank-Up-Magic Skip Force"). As the "Rank-Up-Magic" card's usefulness depends on whatever Xyz Monster the player has on the field at the time (and the fact that those cards aren't easily searchable), "Raidraptor - Last Strix" can be utilized to provide Xyz Monsters straight from the Extra Deck, as materials for Rank-Up if necessary. They also can recover those "Rank-Up-Magic" cards for another use, with cards like "Rank-Up-Magic Raid Force" (in-Graveyard effect) or "Raidraptor - Necro Vulture".
 +
Ultimately, all of these options allows them to greatly increase their offensive power in a Duel, by accessing Xyz Monsters with higher Rank and more powerful effects. With cards like "Raidraptor - Ultimate Falcon" and "Raidraptor - Final Fortress Falcon" at the top, this strategy allows them to achieve decisive victory.

Post New Master Rules
 +
Originally, under the New Master Rules, "Raidraptor" monsters had great difficulty in Xyz Summoning more than one "Raidraptor - Force Strix" at a time, diminishing their early advantage. The release of LINK VRAINS Pack 2 gave the archetype its own Link Monster: "Raidraptor - Wise Strix", which can restore the archetype's consistent plays for the most part, as well as providing more Xyz Materials and easier access to their "Rank-Up-Magic" cards.
 +
Post Master Rules (April 1, 2020 Revision)
 +
With the revision of Master Rules, "Raidraptor" finally regained their full speed from the Master Rule 3 era, being able to Summon more than one "Force Strix" at a time, while also reaping the benefits of "Wise Strix'" swarming and "Rank-Up-Magic"-tutoring effects. A batch of support encouraging the usage of DARK Xyz Monsters alongside "The Phantom Knights" and the "Xyz Dragon" themes was also released in Phantom Rage, bringing with them less-restrictive extenders ("Raider's Wing" and "Raidraptor - Strangle Lanius"), a utility Xyz Monster ("Raider's Knight", which can Special Summon a DARK Xyz Monsters with its own effect, like "Arc Rebellion Xyz Dragon"), and a new "Rank-Up-Magic" card, "Phantom Knights' Rank-Up-Magic Force", which allows much easier access to both "Raidraptor - Ultimate Falcon" and "Final Fortress Falcon".

One important note about this archetype is many of its best card effects restrict to you to Special Summoning only "Raidraptor" Monsters for the rest of the turn; careful considerations are necessary in order to utilize this to its maximum potential.
+
Sample combos
+
A "Raidraptor" Deck can setup a board with several forms of interaction, as well as monsters that are unaffected by other cards' effects. As such, even if the opponent manages to continue their plays after going through all of the player's interactions, they are still forced to deal with "Raidraptor - Rising Rebellion Falcon" and "Raidraptor - Ultimate Falcon". The main way of doing so starts by Summoning "Raider's Knight" by using at least 1 Winged Beast monster, which is detailed below. This can start a combo that builds a board with the following goals:
"Sharp Lanius" is best supported by an Xyz Monster while it is attacking, but sometimes to recover advantage you will need to use its effect to attack into an opposing high DEF Monster and purposefully take damage to enable your plays when there are no other options.
+
# Summoning "Raidraptor - Rising Rebellion Falcon" and "Raidraptor - Ultimate Falcon", both of which have high ATK and are unaffected by card effects.

+
# Setting up themed points of interruption in the form of "Raidraptor - Glorious Bright", which can negate the opponent's cards (especially "Evenly Matched" and "Herald of the Abyss"), and "Rise Rank-Up-Magic Raidraptor's Force", which can Summon "Rising Rebellion Falcon" during the opponent's turn to destroy all of their cards and inflict massive damage.
The effects of the Main Deck monsters are usually activated during the Main Phase of the turn that they were Normal or Special Summoned, and they focus on swarming the field to Xyz Summon Rank 4 or Rank 5 monsters. Cards like "Vanishing Lanius", "Sharp Lanius", "Fuzzy Lanius", and "Singing Lanius" allow quick Special Summoning from the hand or graveyard, while "Force Strix", "Nest", "Mimicry Lanius", "Tribute Lanius", and "Call" either search, dump, or Special Summon free cards from the deck. The archetype can also access other summoning and/or searching effects that benefit Level 4 and Winged Beast-type monsters, such as "Summoner Monk" and "Swallow's Nest" respectively.
+
# Summoning generic forms of interruption, notably "Evilswarm Nightmare" and "S:P Little Knight".

+
# Creating follow-up for the next turn by having "Rank-Up-Magic Skip Force", "Raidraptor - Glorious Bright" and "Raidraptor - Bloom Vulture" in the GY, allowing access to several forms of recovery, as well as an OTK using "Arc Rebellion Xyz Dragon" (Summoned with "Raider's Knight").
The lower-Ranked Xyz Monsters have low ATK and high DEF for their Rank, but they make up for this with extremely powerful effects: "Rise Falcon" can gain a large amount of ATK, while "Blaze Falcon" can attack directly and destroy multiple monsters at once. The Rank 6 "Raidraptor - Revolution Falcon" combine elements from both "Rise" and "Blaze Falcon", albeit slightly different. The Rank 8 and 10 monsters, "Raidraptor - Satellite Cannon Falcon" and "Ultimate Falcon", have higher ATK but more focused on weakening the ATK of the opponents monster instead of outright destroying them (but those effects can work on any monster, not just Special Summoned monster). The new "Raidraptor - Arsenal Falcon" is the oddball of the bunch, since it doesn't have any effect regarding winning battles or destroying Special Summoned monsters, but having more "assistance-like" effects instead that can provide more monsters to your field, or to make Summoning your higher Rank Xyz Monsters easier, and fill the "Rank-Up" gap as "Raidraptor" lacks their Rank 7 Xyz Monster before its release.

}}
 +
There are other ways to start this combo, changing it slightly, but still ending on the same board. For instance, if the player opens with a Level 4 "Raidraptor" monster and an extender (such as "Simorgh, Bird of Perfection"), they can Summon "Raider's Knight" as usual, and at the end of the combo, "Rising Rebellion Falcon" can copy "Force Strix" instead to search "Bloom Vulture", and use it to Special Summon itself and the "Raidraptor" searched by the other "Force Strix".

Rank-Up
+
Alternatively, a similar combo can be performed by simply opening "Raidraptor - Tribute Lanius", which can send "Raidraptor - Fuzzy Lanius" to the GY to search another copy of itself and Special Summoning itself. This will lock the player into "Raidraptor" monsters for the rest of the turn, but the only interactions removed from the combo are "S:P Little Knight" and "Evilswarm Nightmare", while allowing "Force Strix" and "Rising Rebelling Falcon" to search more forms of follow-up for the next turn.
"Raidraptors" also supports Rank-Up strategy, due to a high number of "Rank-Up-Magic" Spells associated with the archetype. These cards usually focus on Ranking-Up any Xyz Monster into a "Raidraptor" monster, or vice-versa. Some of these cards can also revive a defeated Xyz monster before using it as Material for an even stronger one, and others can also Rank-Up Xyz monsters into others that are 2 Ranks higher (with "Soul Shave" and "Skip") or even double their Rank ("Doom Double"), greatly diversifying their options. This tactic is also useful to bring out monsters that would be almost impossible to Summon otherwise, such as "Arsenal Falcon", "Satellite Cannon Falcon" or "Ultimate Falcon".

As per the Master Rule 4, "Raidraptor" has lost their ability to swarm the field with "Force Strix" es, so Rank-Up startegies is the last resort. This can be reinforced with "Xyz Veil" or cards that prevent monster from being destroyed by effect, so that it force an opponent to not attack.
+
Recommended cards
Weaknesses
* As the Deck relies heavily on Xyz Summoning, any cards that prevent Special Summoning will shut it down.

* The Deck also has a reliance on "Rank-Up-Magic" cards, so Spell negation can also slow this Deck.

** "Anti-Spell Fragrance" can help slow down "Rank-Up Magic" plays by forcing the opponent to Set their Spells before being able to use them. However, beware of Quick-Play "Rank-Up-Magic" cards such as "Revolution Force" or "Doom Double Force", which are often intended to be Set and used later.

* The Deck has a reliance on "Vanishing Lanius", "Fuzzy Lanius", and "Force Strix" during the early game. Getting rid of them early will hinder this Deck's plays.

* "Raidraptors" are all DARK Winged Beast monsters, so they can be vulnerable to certain Attribute and Type-based floodgate cards such as "Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror".

* In general, "Raidraptor" decks put a heavy emphasis on battling opponent monsters to activate their card effects, so alternate means of monster removal can prevent them from making several key plays.

Weaknesses
 +
* As the Deck relies heavily on Xyz Summoning, any card that prevents Special Summons, or cards that prevents them from accessing their Extra Deck will shut it down.
 +
* The Deck also relies heavily on "Rank-Up-Magic" cards, so Spell negation cards also hampers it. "Anti-Spell Fragrance" in particular can help slow down the "Rank-Up Magic" cards, "Raidraptor - Call", and "Raidraptor - Nest", by forcing the opponent to Set their Spells before being able to use them. However, Quick-Play "Rank-Up-Magic" cards such as "Rank-Up-Magic Revolution Force" or "Doom Double Force" can still be used during the opponent's turn.
 +
* Much like "Blackwing", this Deck often relies on their initial Normal Summon to start their strategy, and it is often difficult to handle Quick Effects that can disrupt any of their plays, such as those of "Zoodiac Drident" or "Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King".
 +
* All of the "Raidraptor" monsters are DARK Winged Beast monsters, so they are vulnerable to certain Attribute and Type-based floodgate cards such as "Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror".

"Raidraptor", known as "Raid Raptors" (RRレイド・ラプターズ Reido Raputāzu) in the OCG, is an archetype of DARK Winged Beast monsters (except the Warrior "Raider's Knight") used by Shay Obsidian in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V anime and manga. They were introduced in the OCG/TCG in Secrets of Eternity.

Design[edit]

The "Raidraptor" crest.

The "Raidraptor" monsters are based on various genus and species of birds of prey, albeit with a mechanized appearance and equipped with weaponry. Most of the Level 4 monsters are based on the lanius, a genus of passerine birds in the shrike family, while most of the Extra Deck monsters are based on the falcon. Additional monsters are based on vultures, eagles, and strixes, a genus of earless owls. The Level 3 and Rank 3 monsters are based on eagles, while the members based on vultures and strixes have not a common Level or Rank. This scheme and naming pattern reflect the codenames of different members belonging to the same military unit. All "Raidraptor" monsters display a signature crest somewhere on their bodies. The crest itself (or a modified version) also appears in the artwork of the various "Rank-Up Magic" Spell Cards related to this archetype. In the English dub of the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V anime, their attack names were all alliterative.

Playing style[edit]

Much like other Xyz-based archetypes, this Deck focused on swarming the field with necessary monsters to perform Xyz Summon. Most of their monsters have effects that allows them to be Summoned rapidly to the field, but the easiest method for them to do so usually involves cards from player's hand (such as "Raidraptor - Vanishing Lanius"), and therefore, the player needs to keep many resources in the hand to start their initial strategy.

Rank-Up[edit]

Post New Master Rules[edit]

Originally, under the New Master Rules, "Raidraptor" monsters had great difficulty in Xyz Summoning more than one "Raidraptor - Force Strix" at a time, diminishing their early advantage. The release of LINK VRAINS Pack 2 gave the archetype its own Link Monster: "Raidraptor - Wise Strix", which can restore the archetype's consistent plays for the most part, as well as providing more Xyz Materials and easier access to their "Rank-Up-Magic" cards.

Post Master Rules (April 1, 2020 Revision)[edit]

Sample combos[edit]

A "Raidraptor" Deck can setup a board with several forms of interaction, as well as monsters that are unaffected by other cards' effects. As such, even if the opponent manages to continue their plays after going through all of the player's interactions, they are still forced to deal with "Raidraptor - Rising Rebellion Falcon" and "Raidraptor - Ultimate Falcon". The main way of doing so starts by Summoning "Raider's Knight" by using at least 1 Winged Beast monster, which is detailed below. This can start a combo that builds a board with the following goals:

 1. Summoning "Raidraptor - Rising Rebellion Falcon" and "Raidraptor - Ultimate Falcon", both of which have high ATK and are unaffected by card effects.
 2. Setting up themed points of interruption in the form of "Raidraptor - Glorious Bright", which can negate the opponent's cards (especially "Evenly Matched" and "Herald of the Abyss"), and "Rise Rank-Up-Magic Raidraptor's Force", which can Summon "Rising Rebellion Falcon" during the opponent's turn to destroy all of their cards and inflict massive damage.
 3. Summoning generic forms of interruption, notably "Evilswarm Nightmare" and "S:P Little Knight".
 4. Creating follow-up for the next turn by having "Rank-Up-Magic Skip Force", "Raidraptor - Glorious Bright" and "Raidraptor - Bloom Vulture" in the GY, allowing access to several forms of recovery, as well as an OTK using "Arc Rebellion Xyz Dragon" (Summoned with "Raider's Knight").
Opening: "Raidraptor - Bloom Vulture" + 1 Level 4 "Raidraptor" monster
 1. Activate "Raidraptor - Bloom Vulture" to Special Summon itself and another Level 4 "Raidraptor" monster from the hand.
 2. Xyz Summon "Raider's Knight" by using "Bloom Vulture" and the other "Raidraptor" monster.
 3. Activate "Raider's Knight" to detach "Bloom Vulture" Xyz Summon "Raidraptor - Brave Strix" by using itself as material.
 4. Activate "Brave Strix" by detaching "Raider's Knight" to search "Rank-Up-Magic Skip Force".
 5. Activate "Skip Force" to Xyz Summon "Raidraptor - Arsenal Falcon" by using "Brave Strix".
 6. Activate "Arsenal Falcon" by detaching "Brave Strix" to Summon "Raidraptor - Noir Lanius" from the Deck.
 7. Activate "Noir Lanius" by targeting itself to search "Raidraptor - Heel Eagle".
 8. Activate "Heel Eagle" to Special Summon itself.
 9. Link Summon "Raidraptor - Wise Strix" by using "Arsenal Falcon" and "Heel Eagle".
 10. Activate "Wise Strix" as Chain Link 1 and "Arsenal Falcon" as Chain Link 2, which will Special Summon "Raidraptor - Ultimate Falcon" from the Extra Deck and attach "Arsenal Falcon" from the GY to it as material, and Special Summon "Raidraptor - Mimicry Lanius" from the Deck.
 11. Activate "Wise Strix" to Set "Rise Rank-Up-Magic Raidraptor's Force" from the Deck.
 12. Activate "Ultimate Falcon" by detaching "Arsenal Falcon" to prevent the opponent from activating cards for the rest of the turn.
 13. Xyz Summon "Raidraptor - Force Strix" by using "Noir Lanius" and "Mimicry Lanius".
 14. Activate "Force Strix" by detaching "Mimicry Lanius" to search "Raidraptor - Strangle Lanius".
 15. Activate "Mimicry Lanius" by banishing itself to search "Raidraptor - Roost".
 16. Activate "Roost".
 17. Activate "Rise Rank-Up-Magic" by targeting "Force Strix" (on the field), "Raider's Knight" and "Brave Strix" (in the GY) to Xyz Summon "Raidraptor - Rising Rebellion Falcon" and attach/transfer them as materials.
 18. Activate the effect of "Roost" to search "Raidraptor - Glorious Bright".
 19. Activate "Strangle Lanius" to Special Summon itself from the hand.
 20. Activate "Strangle Lanius" to Special Summon "Bloom Vulture" from the GY.
 21. Activate "Rising Rebellion Falcon" by detaching all 3 Xyz Monsters to copy the effect of "Arsenal Falcon" in the GY.
 22. Activate the copied effect of "Arsenal Falcon" to Special Summon "Raider's Wing" from the Deck.
 23. Link Summon "S:P Little Knight" by using "Raider's Wing" and "Wise Strix".
 24. Xyz Summon a second "Force Strix" by using "Strangle Lanius" and "Bloom Vulture".
 25. Activate "Force Strix" to search "Raidraptor - Tribute Lanius".
 26. Normal Summon "Tribute Lanius".
 27. Activate "Raider's Wing" in the GY to detach the last material from "Force Strix" to Special Summon itself.
 28. Xyz Summon "Evilswarm Nightmare" by using "Tribute Lanius" and "Raider's Wing".
 29. Activate "Heel Eagle" in the GY by banishing itself to return "Rise Rank-Up-Magic" from the GY to the hand.
 30. Activate "Roost" to shuffle "Mimicry Lanius", "Heel Eagle", and "Force Strix" into the Deck and draw 1 card.
 31. Set "Rise Rank-Up-Magic" and "Glorious Bright".
