Playmaker vs. Varis - First Scripted Duel was the first scripted Duel that took place during the Jump Festa 2018. Shouya Ishige and Shunsuke Takeuchi reprised their roles as Playmaker and Varis, respectively. A second scripted Duel between the same characters later took place at the same event.

Synopsis[edit]

Scripted Duel[edit]

This duel is conducted as a Speed Duel.

Turn 1: Varis
Varis Sets a monster. Varis Sets a card in his Spell & Trap Zone.

Turn 2: Playmaker
Playmaker sends "Stack Reviver" (a Level 2 or lower monster) from his hand to his GY to Special Summon "Bitrooper" (1500/2000) from his hand in Attack Position, via its own effect. Playmaker Normal Summons "Cyberse Gadget" (1400/300) and activates its first effect: when it is Normal Summoned, he can target 1 Level 2 or lower monster in his GY and Special Summon it in Defense Position, but its effects are negated. He targets and Special Summons "Stack Reviver" (100/600) from his GY in Defense Position. Playmaker sets "Stack Reviver" and "Cyberse Gadget" (2 Cyberse monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Honeybot" (1900/←→) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Playmaker activates the effect of "Stack Reviver", then chains the second effect of "Cyberse Gadget". The chain resolves backwards: if "Cyberse Gadget" is sent from the field to the GY, Playmaker can Special Summon 1 "Gadget Token" (0/0), which he does so in Defense Position. The effect of "Stack Reviver" resolves: since it was used as Link Material for a Link Summon, Playmaker can target one other Level 4 or lower Cyberse Monster that was used for that same Link Summon, and Special Summon it in Defense Position. He targets and Special Summons "Cyberse Gadget" in Defense Position. Playmaker sets "Gadget Token" and the Link-2 "Honeybot" (2+ Cyberse monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Excode Talker" (2300/←↑→) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Playmaker activates the first effect of "Excode Talker": when it is Link Summoned, he can choose unused Main Monster Zones equal to the number of monsters currently in the Extra Monster Zones and render those zones unusable, while this monster is face-up on the field. There is currently one monster in the Extra Monster Zones: "Excode Talker" itself, allowing Playmaker to target 1 Main Monster Zone. He targets Varis' leftmost Main Monster Zone.

"Excode Talker" attacks and destroys Varis' Set monster, "Anesthrokket Dragon" (0/2200). "Bitrooper" attacks Varis directly (Varis: 4000 → 2500 LP).

During the End Phase, Varis activates the second effect of "Anesthrokket Dragon": if it is in the GY because it was destroyed on the field by battle or card effect and sent there this turn, he can Special Summon 1 "Rokket" monster from his Deck, except another copy of "Anesthrokket Dragon". He Special Summons "Autorokket Dragon" (1600/1000) in Defense Position. Varis activates his Set Quick-Play Spell "Squib Draw", allowing him to target 1 "Rokket" monster he controls and destroy it, and if he does, he draws 2 cards. He targets and destroys "Autorokket Dragon". Varis activates the second effect of "Autorokket Dragon": during the End Phase, if it is in the GY because it was destroyed on the field by battle or card effect and sent there this turn, he can Special Summon 1 "Rokket" monster from his Deck, except another copy of "Autorokket Dragon". He Special Summons "Magnarokket Dragon" (1800/1200) in Defense Position.

Turn 3: Varis
Varis Normal Summons "Metalrokket Dragon" (1700/1400). Varis sets "Magnarokket Dragon" and "Metalrokket Dragon" (2 Level 4 or lower non-Token Dragon monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Twin Triangle Dragon" (1200/→↓) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Varis activates the Field Spell "Boot Sector Launch" and activates its third effect: if his opponent controls more monsters than he does, then Varis can Special Summon "Rokket" monsters with different names from his GY in Defense Position, up to the difference. Varis controls 1 monster ("Twin Triangle Dragon"), whereas Playmaker controls 3 ("Excode Talker", "Cyberse Gadget", and "Bitrooper"), for a total difference of 2 less than his opponent. He Special Summons "Anesthrokket Dragon" and "Autorokket Dragon" from his GY in Defense Position. Varis sets "Anesthrokket Dragon", "Autorokket Dragon", and the Link-2 "Twin Triangle Dragon" (2+ Effect Monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Topologic Bomber Dragon" (3000/↑↙↓↘) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side.

"Topologic Bomber Dragon" attacks and destroys "Excode Talker" (Playmaker: 4000 → 3300 LP). Varis activates the second effect of "Topologic Bomber Dragon": after damage calculation, if it attacked an opponent's monster, that player takes effect damage, equal to that attacked monster's original ATK. In this case, the original ATK of "Excode Talker" is 2300 (Playmaker: 3300 → 1000 LP).

Turn 4: Playmaker
Playmaker Normal Summons Lady Debug (1700/1400) and activates its effect: if it is Normal or Special Summoned, Playmaker can add 1 Level 3 or lower Cyberse monster from his Deck to his hand. He adds "Backup Secretary" from his Deck to his hand. Playmaker sets "Lady Debug", "Bitrooper", and "Cyberse Gadget" (3 monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Powercode Talker" (2300/←↙→) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Playmaker activates the second effect of "Cyberse Gadget": if it is sent from the field to the GY, Playmaker can Special Summon 1 "Gadget Token", which he does so in Defense Position to the Main Monster Zone in the same column as "Powercode Talker". Playmaker activates the first effect of "Powercode Talker", allowing him to target 1 face-up monster on the field, and negate that target's effects until the end of this turn. He targets "Topologic Bomber Dragon" and negates its effects. Since Playmaker controls a Cyberse Monster, he Special Summons Backup Secretary (1200/800) from his hand in Attack Position, via its own effect, to the Main Monster Zone the bottom-left Link Arrow of "Powercode Talker" points to. Playmaker sets a card.

"Powercode Talker" attacks "Topologic Bomber Dragon". During damage calculation, Playmaker activates the second effect of "Powercode Talker: if it battles an opponent's monster, Playmaker can Tribute one monster that "Powercode Talker" points to, and if he does, the ATK of "Powercode Talker" becomes double its original ATK during that damage calculation only. He tributes "Backup Secretary" ("Powercode Talker": 2300 → 4600 ATK). The attack continues and "Topologic Bomber Dragon" is destroyed (Varis 2600 → 900 LP) ("Powercode Talker": 4600 → 2300 ATK).

Turn 5: Varis
Varis activates the third effect of "Boot Sector Launch": if his opponent controls more monsters than he does, then Varis can Special Summon "Rokket" monsters with different names from his GY in Defense Position, up to the difference. Varis controls no monsters and Playmaker controls 2 monsters ("Powercode Talker" and "Gadget Token"), for a total difference of 2 less than his opponent. Therefore, Varis Special Summons "Metalrokket Dragon" and "Anesthrokket Dragon" from his GY in Defense Position ("Metalrokket Dagon" is Special Summoned to the Main Monster Zone in the same column as "Powercode Talker"). Varis Normal Summons "Shelrokket Dragon" (1100/2000). Varis sets "Anesthrokket Dragon" and "Shelrokket Dragon" (2 Dragon monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Booster Dragon" (1900/↙↘) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Because his opponent controls a Link Monster, Varis Special Summons Gateway Dragon (1600/1400) from his hand in Attack Position via its own effect. Varis activates the second effect of "Gateway Dragon", allowing him to Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower DARK Dragon monster from his hand. He Special Summons another copy "Anesthrokket Dragon" in Attack Position. Varis activates the first effect of Booster Dragon", allowing him to target 1 other face-up monster on the field, and increase its ATK/DEF by 500, also his opponent cannot activate cards or effects in response to this effect's activation. He targets "Metalrokket". In response, Varis activates the first effect of "Metalrokket Dragon": when a Link Monster's effect is activated that targets this face-up card on the field, Varis can destroy this card, then destroy all his opponent's cards in the column this card was in. He destroys "Metalrokket Dragon", along with Playmaker's "Powercode Talker" and "Gadget Token". Varis activates his Skill, Storm Access, accessing a Cyberse Link Monster at random from a nearby Data Storm and adding it to his Extra Deck. He obtains "Topologic Trisbaena" and adds it to his Extra Deck. Varis sets "Anesthrokket Dragon" and the Link-2 "Booster Dragon" (2+ Effect monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Topologic Trisbaena" (2500/↑↙↘) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Varis activates the Quick-Play Spell "Quick Launch", allowing him to Special Summon 1 "Rokket" monster from his Deck, but it cannot attack and it is destroyed during the End Phase. He Special Summons another copy of "Autorokket Dragon" in Attack Position to the Main Monster Zone the bottom-left Link Arrow of "Topologic Trisbaena" points to. Varis activates the effect of "Topologic Trisbaena": if a monster(s) is Special Summoned to a zone(s) this card points to, then as many those monster(s) as possible are banished, along with as many Spells/Traps on the field as possible, and if Varis does this, his opponent takes 500 points of effect damage for each of their cards banished by this effect. "Autorokket Dragon", "Boot Sector Launch", and Playmaker's Set card are banished (Playmaker 1000 → 500 LP).

"Topologic Trisbaena" attacks Playmaker directly (Playmaker 500 → 0 LP).
