The episode starts with Joey having a dream that a "[[Blue-Eyes White Dragon]]" is chasing him in a dark area. He runs into [[Seto Kaiba]], who calls him a cowardly dog. Joey then sees himself in a dog outfit with Seto telling him to sit on his knees. He wakes up, saying it's a brand new day of the [[Duelist Kingdom]] tournament and that he is ready to duel. Tea shows up with Mai's backpack. Mai left the group, but wrote Yugi a note saying she owes him eight star chips. As the gang walks through the woods, they are being spied on by three boys, Bonz, Sid, and Sygore, who all work for [[Keith Howard|Bandit Keith]]. Keith is in the [[Duelist Kingdom]] to get revenge on Pegasus for what he did to him in New York City. They know Yugi was the kid who defeated Seto Kaiba months earlier, so they decide to eliminate Joey first. "Arena of Lost Souls, Part 1", known as "Terror! Call of the Living Dead" in the Japanese version, is the seventeenth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! second series anime. It first aired in Japan on August 15, 2000 and in the United States on February 16, 2002.

Summary[edit]

Joey is running as fast as he can through a cloudy area. He looks behind him and sees the glowing eyes of a "Blue-Eyes White Dragon", and continues running. Joey trips and falls as the dragon continues to approach and lands next to him. He starts crawling away, but sees Kaiba towering over him, who tells him that he will never recover from his fear of Dueling and that he is a loser dog. Joey imagines himself in a dog outfit and whimpers as Kaiba continues to taunt him. He slumps over and begins to cry.

Suddenly, a drop of water from a leaf falls onto Joey's face and he realizes that he was having a nightmare. He resolves to show Kaiba that he is not a loser, stands up and orders the gang to wake up as it is morning. As it is the second day of the tournament, Duelists wishing to enter Pegasus Castle must gather ten Star Chips by the end of the day. Téa approaches the group holding a bag. She hands Yugi a note, which was written by Mai and says that she owes Yugi the eight Star Chips that he won back for her. Yugi realizes that Mai wants to go through the rest of the tournament alone. The gang head out, with Joey and Yugi resolving to build on their four and six Star Chips, respectively.

The gang discuss how many Duelists remain on the island, with Yugi remembering that about ten Duelists were sent home on day one, with others being eliminated by the Eliminators. Yugi guesses that about half of the 40 participants thus far have been eliminated. He says that any Duelist who survived the first day must be powerful. Tristan tells Yugi to stop scaring Joey, which Joey objects to, saying that no matter how powerful his opponent is, he will defeat them.

Meanwhile, the gang is being watched by a group of three Duelists named Sid, Zygor and Bonz peering at them with binoculars. Zygor observes that only two members of the gang have Dueling Gauntlets, but that one is Yugi, and they walk away to report their observations to their boss, Bandit Keith. (In the dub, they observe Joey to be a stupid kid and a weakling.) Zygor reports that they found new prey, but Bonz says that since one of them is Yugi, they should forget about it. Keith says that he has never heard of Yugi, but he doesn't care as they will be the ones to make it to the Castle. (In the dub, Keith has heard of Yugi, but refers to him as a "little squirt" who coasts solely on his reputation.) This reassures the others, who say that with a powerful Duelist like Keith by their side, they can't lose. As the group celebrates their alliance, Keith frowns and stares at Pegasus Castle, flashing back to when Pegasus humiliated him at the United States The King of Duelists tournament. He vows to have his revenge on Pegasus for making a fool out of him.

Keith asks the others to tell him about Joey. Zygor says that he looked weak, and Keith says that Joey will be their target. The group stands up and laughs.

Meanwhile, the group is walking through a forest, lamenting how they have failed to encounter any other Duelists. Tristan observes that finding other Duelists is harder since there are fewer of them on the island. Joey says that he is calling a timeout, and runs off away from everyone, saying that "nature calls". (In the dub, Joey is worried that someone is stalking them, and he runs off to go stalk them first.) Sid and Zygor observe the group from some nearby bushes and laugh.

At the same time, Keith and Bonz are walking through an underground cave. Bonz asks where they are going, and Keith says they are going to a hidden stage. Some bats fly out from the cave's ceiling, which terrifies Bonz and leaves him trembling in fear, while Keith is unfazed. Keith says that the field will be perfect for Bonz's Deck, which is full of Ghost monsters (zombies in the dub). Keith asks Bonz to give him his Deck, and he obliges. Keith scoffs and says that this Deck isn't strong enough. He opens his jacket, revealing a dozen Decks full of cards, and says that by adding his cards, Bonz will be able to have the strongest Ghost Deck. Once he finishes, Keith reveals that just ahead is the Graveyard field, and by bringing their prey there, there's no way Bonz can lose with the Deck he has. Bonz grins and tells Keith to leave it to him. Keith shoves Bonz into a pile of skulls, which terrifies Bonz again, as Keith begins walking to the Graveyard field. Bonz hurries after him.

Meanwhile, Joey is standing next to a waterfall, having just finished relieving himself. (In the dub, he has alleviated his fears of a stalker.) Suddenly, Zygor appears behind him and smirks. Joey tries to ask who he is, but Zygor punches him in the gut, which knocks him out cold, as he and Sid laugh. (In the dub, the shot of Joey being punched is cut, and the means by which he blacks out are unknown.)

Joey opens his eyes as Zygor screams at him to wake up. Joey is freaked out by Zygor, as another voice shouts "Duel, standby!" triggering the Duel Arena, and Joey's platform is raised into the Arena. Joey is terrified by the sights of the Graveyard field as Bonz emerges on the other side of the Arena with a creepy grin, welcoming him to the Graveyard. Bonz declares that he will bury Joey, and Joey cries out in terror.

Back on the surface, the gang is wondering why Joey is taking so long. Téa thinks that maybe he got lost, and Yugi suggests that someone may have challenged him to a Duel, which Tristan agrees with. Bakura says the gang should split up and look for him, which they do. Tristan and Bakura run one way, while Yugi and Téa run another.

Deep in the cave, Bonz declares that it's time to Duel and that this is Joey's graveyard, but Joey has a blank expression, and Sid observes that Joey fainted while standing up. Keith orders the others to wake him up, and Zygor does so by throwing a fake skull, which hits Joey in the head. Bonz calls Joey the biggest coward that he has ever met, having fainted just at the sight of the Graveyard field. Joey retorts by saying that he fainted at the sight of Bonz's creepy face, not at the field. Bonz is unamused, while the others laugh at him. Bonz screams at them to be quiet, and then says that he and Joey will each wager all their Star Chips — four each. Joey wants to back out, but Keith calls him a coward and a loser dog, and Sid makes barking noises at Joey. (In the dub, Keith tells him the only way out is handing over all his Star Chips.) Joey flashes back to his nightmare and ultimately agrees to the Duel, slapping his Star Chips onto the table.

The Duel begins. Zygor tells Bonz to use his Ghost cards to bury Joey, and Joey realizes why he was brought to the Graveyard field. Meanwhile, the gang still sees no sign of Joey, with Yugi saying that if Joey is at a Duel Arena, they should be able to see him. Bonz goes first and prepares to play a Ghost card, "The Snake Hair", but Keith calls out to him and tells him to stop. He advises Bonz to play a different card, "Zanki", a Warrior monster that is not affected by the Field Power Bonus. Keith tells a hesitant Bonz that he will be fine if he follows Keith's advice, and some urging from the rest of the group makes Bonz trust Keith. He Summons "Zanki" in Attack Position, and Joey responds with "Axe Raider", which destroys "Zanki" with "Wind Blades". Bonz's Life Points drop to 1800.

Bonz looks back at Keith nervously, who says that it's fine. Bonz resolves to play a Ghost card this time, but Keith stops him again and tells him to play another non-Ghost, "Crawling Dragon". Bonz knows that it will be destroyed as soon as he plays it, but Keith tells him not to worry and to follow his strategy. Bonz Sets his monster, and Joey orders "Axe Raider" to destroy it, which it does, and "Crawling Dragon" is destroyed. Joey celebrates his victory, and Keith instructs Bonz to play another of his cards, and not in Defense Position this time, since it might dissuade Joey from attacking. Bonz Summons "Crass Clown", and Joey responds by Summoning "Flame Swordsman", which uses its "Flaming Sword of Battle" to slash apart "Crass Clown", dropping Bonz's Life Points to 1350. With all the momentum on his side, Joey feels sure that he will win, and he does not even need Yugi's help to do it.

With three monsters destroyed, Bonz continues to waver, but Keith tells him that he has already won. Joey taunts them, saying that he will take them all on, but Keith tells Bonz that "it's time to do it." Bonz draws his next card and gasps, realizing what Keith wanted him to do all along. Keith orders him to show Joey his trump card, and Bonz activates the Spell "Call of the Haunted", which Keith explains resurrects all monsters in the graveyard as Zombies. Bonz explains that Zombies are a special type of Ghost cards and are immortal. The three destroyed monsters slowly rise out of the ground.

Back on the surface, Téa and Tristan spot a dropped item on the ground. Téa opens it and realizes that it is a wallet containing a picture of Joey's sister, Serenity. Tristan says that as clumsy as Joey is, he would never lose something that important, and something must have happened to him. Suddenly, Téa spots a cave near where everyone is standing, and Tristan rushes off to go look inside, as the rest of the gang follow behind him. Inside the cave, the group spot a pair of coffins, with Yugi warning everyone to look out. Bakura walks up to one and touches it, and Téa touches the other one, which triggers a chain that opens the coffins and causes skeletons to fall onto Téa and Bakura, terrifying them both. Yugi and Tristan punch through and shatter the skeletons, and Tristan curses Pegasus' sick humor.

Back at the Graveyard, the three Zombies — "Dragon Zombie", "Armored Zombie", and "Clown Zombie" — have come back to life. Bonz explains that now that the monsters have been turned into Zombies, they gain a Field Power Bonus from the Graveyard. Bonz orders "Dragon Zombie" to attack "Axe Raider". Joey orders "Axe Raider" to counterattack, and it slices through the body of "Dragon Zombie", but it quickly regenerates. Keith explains that since Zombies are immortal, they can keep resurrecting. Bonz orders "Dragon Zombie" to attack with "Deadly Zombie Breath", and "Axe Raider" is blown away and turned into dust, which leaves Joey's "Flame Swordsman" standing alone against Bonz's army of three Zombies.

Featured Duel: Joey Wheeler vs. Bonz[edit]

Monsters compatible with Graveyard receive a 30% Field Power Bonus. This includes Zombie-Type monsters.

Turn 1: Bonz
Bonz tries to Normal Summon "The Snake Hair", but Bandit Keith tells him to Normal Summon "Zanki" instead. Bonz Normal Summons "Zanki" (1500/1700) in Attack Position.

Turn 2: Joey
Joey draws. He then Normal Summons "Axe Raider" (1700/1150) in Attack Position. "Axe Raider" attacks and destroys "Zanki" (Bonz: 2000 → 1800 LP).

Turn 3: Bonz
Bonz draws. He tries to Summon a Zombie-type monster, but Keith tells Bonz to use "Crawling Dragon" instead. Bonz Sets "Crawling Dragon".

Turn 4: Joey
Joey draws. "Axe Raider" attacks and destroys Bonz's Set "Crawling Dragon" (1600/1400).

Turn 5: Bonz
Bonz draws. Keith tells Bonz to Normal Summon "Crass Clown" in Attack Position, which he does (1350/1400).

Turn 6: Joey
Joey draws. He then Normal Summons "Flame Swordsman" (1800/1600) in Attack Position. "Flame Swordsman" attacks and destroys "Crass Clown" (Bonz: 1800 → 1350 LP).

Turn 7: Bonz
Bonz draws "Call of the Haunted" and subsequently activates it to Special Summon "Zanki", "Crawling Dragon", and "Crass Clown" from his Graveyard as "Armored Zombie" (1500 → 1950/0), "Dragon Zombie" (1600 → 2080/0), and "Clown Zombie" (1350 → 1755/0) in Attack Position in Attack Position. "Dragon Zombie" attacks and destroys "Axe Raider" (Joey: 2000 → 1620 LP).

Differences in adaptations[edit]

  • The kanji for "lose" on Joey's dog suit is erased in the dub.
  • When Joey is about to wake up, a sparkly transition is cut from the dub.
  • The graphic which reads, "Duelist Kingdom, Tournament Second Day," is removed from the US version.
  • In the Japanese version, Mai's note to Yugi is in Japanese, in the dub it's changed to smudges, though Yugi could still read it.
  • A graphic saying Joey has 4 stars is erased in the dub.
  • A graphic saying Yugi has 6 stars is erased in the dub.
  • Cut from the US version is the scene where Jonouchi (Joey) asks Zygor who he is, then Zygor punches Jonouchi in the stomach and knocks him down. Sid and Zygor stand over Jonouchi, laughing.
  • Serenity is added to the shot of Joey thinking about her in the US version.
  • In the dub (and the real game), "Call of the Haunted" is a trap card, in the Japanese version it's a Spell card.
  • The crosses on "Call of the Haunted" are changed to rhinestones in the dub.
  • The shot of "Axe Raider"'s axe splitting "Dragon Zombie" in half is obscured in the US version.
  • The word "TO BE CONTINUED" are added at the end of the dub episode.
