One Step Ahead - Part 1, entitled Kaiba's Intrusion! The Grand Prix Final in the Japanese version, is the 194th episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! television series.

The Grand Championship is almost at its end, narrowed down to 2 contestants: Leon Wilson and Zigfried Lloyd—but before their Duel can begin, Seto Kaiba suddenly intervenes and replaces Leon as Zigfried's opponent.

Major Events

FINAL Duel
Zigfried Lloyd vs. Leon Wilson

  • The Duel is set in Kaiba Dome, the big audience stadium of Kaiba's theme park Kaibaland. The winner will have the honour of playing against Yugi Muto.
  • Suddenly, Seto Kaiba arrives and declares a "dueling foul": Zigfried entered the tournament under a false name (in breach of KC Championship contract rules), and must therefore be disqualified. Seto exposes Zigfried as Zigfried von Schroeder and immediately orders him to leave.
  • Zigfried calls Kaiba a coward, saying this is just a "technicality" excuse to prevent him from reaching the Championship crown. However, Kaiba tells him that "no one is going to kick you out" and challenges him to try to stand up to him in a Duel, to which Ziegfried quickly agrees. The featured Duel becomes Seto Kaiba vs. Zigfried von Schroeder.
  • Kaiba already has knowledge of Zigfried unleashing a virus all over KaibaCorp's computer banks, giving him an advantage. To remedy this, Kaiba instead uses his Duel Disk connected to the Duel Stage with a USB cable, ensuring that they both play on fair terms.

Notes

"Mischief of the Time Goddess":

  • During this episode and during his first turn of the Duel, Zigfried declares an attack on a defenseless Seto. Seto uses Trap Card "Negate Attack" to negate it, but Zigfried then plays Spell Card "Mischief of the Time Goddess": the Duel seems to skip towards another Battle Phase for Zigfried, who then attacks again.
  • Seto however, counters Zigfried's second attack by activating Trap Card "Magical Trick Mirror": he selects "Mischief of the Time Goddess" in Zigfried's Graveyard and activates it. It somehow permits Seto to stop Zigfried's current attack dead in its tracks, and go directly to his next turn (which Phase is unclear, at least initially).
  • The exact effects of "Mischief of the Time Goddess", as well as the subtleties of its application, aren't fully explained:
    • In the English Dub, Zigfried quotes: "Mischief of the Time Goddess" allows me to skip your turn, then I can pick off where I left off (...)".
    • In the original Japanese, Zigfried reads the exact text of the card instead: "Skip 1 turn. My turn to Battle Phase".
    • It is believed the card's text should be something along the lines of: "Immediately end current turn: its remaining Phases, including the End Phase, are skipped. Go directly to the Battle Phase of your next turn". A full discussion on how this conclusion was reached can be found in the "Mischief of the Time Goddess" DISCUSSION Page.
