Image Problem

I've been uploading better quality images for cards in Generation Force, and while I was attempting to change "Pain Painter's" picture (the current one is slightly askew), it rejected the imagine. I tried two different files, but it kept saying it had an incompatible MIME type. Could you check this out and see what the problem is? Thanks in advance. --DARK 07:02, June 1, 2012 (UTC)

Are you trying to upload a jpg over a png? It might be that you've saved the image with .png at the end of its name, but the extension is hidden and actually .jpg. If you're using MS Paint, when you "Save as..." make sure that the "Save as type" is set to png. Or simply upload it as a jpg and flag the png for deletion. -- Deltaneos (talk) 11:07, June 1, 2012 (UTC)
It should have been a .jpg, so I'll go check and tell you if that does anything. --DARK 03:46, June 2, 2012 (UTC)
That got it. Thanks. --DARK 03:50, June 2, 2012 (UTC)

Kana

Master D has been going around removing any translations of kana to use the phonetic instead, such as at "Tinplate Archduke" and "Gearspring Spirit". I recall some discussion in the past about kana translations that I had with you regarding "Winged Kuriboh". Can you elaborate a bit on this? I asked NeoArkadia, and he said he'd never heard of that rule. Is it translation convention the TCG uses, or something? Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 18:56, June 2, 2012 (UTC)

Did you use the word "kana" when you asked him? Kana can refer to hiragana too, in which case the word would be translated. It's only katakana I said that you don't apply the translation for.
Most Japanese words have a kanji or hirigana spelling. Katakana is used for foreign words, like "Black Magician" (ブラック・マジシャン) and "Walküre Erste" (ワルキューレ・アルテスト). The latter name stays fixed in German no matter what language you translate it to. If you wanted a name to maintain Japanese words when you translate it between languages, it seems to make sense that you'd write them in katakana rather than their standard kanji or hiragana spelling. e.g. "Fortune-Telling Witch Hikari" (and the character Hikari) uses the katakana "ヒカリち" to spell "Hikari", rather than use the kanji, 光, which is why we use "Fortune-Telling Witch Hikari" as the translation, rather than "Fortune-Telling Witch Light".
But there are exceptions to every rule for when things just don't seem right. I don't know if it's right to call it "common sense", considering how many unresolvable discussions can be had over them. It does seem a bit overkill to use the use "Nejimaki Shikigami" etc. as the translations, but I don't know maybe it is right to. -- Deltaneos (talk) 22:32, June 2, 2012 (UTC)
Ok. Um, here's a question then. Why would want to maintain Japanese words when translating across languages? What purpose does that serve? Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 22:42, June 2, 2012 (UTC)
When it's just a name, I guess. Like if you edited a German wiki, you'd probably still want to be called Cheesedude, rather than Käsedude. That's why the "Hikari" example makes more sense than the "Clockwork" one to me. -- Deltaneos (talk) 22:49, June 2, 2012 (UTC)
I suppose that makes some sense, but I really don't see the value of it in card names, honestly. It just seems like a really odd convention to use. Even in the example you listed. I actually never took "Fortune-Telling Witch Light" to mean "A Fortune-Telling Witch named Light". Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 00:03, June 3, 2012 (UTC)
Thinking about this a bit more, I can think of an non-card example this is a convention for, that makes sense - New Domino City. I suppose it does help indicate that even in Japan, the word being used was foreign. But as I said, I'm still not really sold on it. I don't know. Has it just been always de-facto policy? Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 01:09, June 3, 2012 (UTC)
You mean named "Hikari" or are you thinking of "Fortune Lady Light"?
The first I ever took notice of it was with that Hikari example. I created the page at "Fortune-Telling Witch Hikari", then renamed it to "Fortune-Telling Witch Light", although I was a bit unsure about it. After getting a second opinion (User talk:Deltaneos/Archive 13#F.T.Witch "Hikari", User talk:Danny Lilithborne#Fortune Telling Witch Hikari), I put it back. I just went with that standard after that. Although it's only rarely came up where I've edited. I wouldn't call it a policy. But I couldn't see any other reason why you'd put a Japanese word in katakana.
A weaker bit of support is that Google translate usually doesn't attempt to translate a Japanese word that's been written in katakana, save putting it in the Latin alphabet.
One argument against leaving them untranslated would be nearly all the Japanese cards that have English names written in katakana don't stay in English when translated to other languages. e.g. "Elemental HERO" (エレメンタルヒーロー) becomes "HÉROS Élémentaire", "ElementarHELD" etc. rather than use the English words. -- Deltaneos (talk) 12:10, June 3, 2012 (UTC)
I've asked III. He should have a better idea of how this works than me. -- Deltaneos (talk) 12:33, June 4, 2012 (UTC)
ブリキ is a loanword from Dutch, and even if it weren't, being written in katakana does not "protect it" from being translated. Same story with "Nejimaki Shikigami"; we've already got the romanization up. They're Japanese words, even if they're written in katakana, and they're supposed to be translated. (Though for the record, ヒカリちゃん is a name - rendering it as "Fortunetelling Witch Hikari" is perfectly acceptable.)--Ryusui (talkcontribs) 01:50, June 14, 2012 (UTC)
Okay, cool. Could you also clarify on whether its "Hane Kuriboh" or "Wing Kuriboh" and "Neko Mane King" or "Cat Bekonking". I'm guessing you'll go with "Wing" and I think I've seen your stance on the latter. -- Deltaneos (talk) 12:32, June 14, 2012 (UTC)
I did it that way because we're doing the Syllable cards that way. And I'm not a Japanese speaker, but I think that you can attach various kanji to kana, so you can't actually translate them. And it's definitely Nekomaneking; Cat Beckonking is just stupid. It's Hane Kuribo because of Hanewata. I guess we can give them our own translation since it's obvious they're frogs and that they're made of tin, are winged etc., but Cat Beckonking doesn't fit anywhere; it's stupid. MadRest 00:32, June 15, 2012 (UTC)
My understanding was that we were doing the Syllable cards that way because they are the Syllable cards. "Kagetokage" set the precedent that they don't get translated in the TCG, so as to maintain the the wordplay. I'm not sure that should be applied to everything else. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 00:37, June 15, 2012 (UTC)
There shouldn't be a translation there. I'll get rid of it. Again, Kagetokage doesn't have a translation since it's Kana. And since the TCG's doing it, I'm not going to give them a translation since it can't be translated. For the same reasoning, the Frogs' Japanese names are portmanteaus, but one part of their name is in kanji. Who came up with Malenlightened, by the way? MadRest 00:42, June 15, 2012 (UTC)
You're right that kana alone do not always provide sufficient context; however, that's not the case here. As a further note, katakana can indicate emphasis, or even be used for the hell of it - they are not a universal indicator that "this should be taken literally and not translated." I'm not a native speaker, either, but I've had over a decade of experience. For the record, I translated "Neko Mane King" as "Cat Beckonking" because the Japanese name is a portmanteau of 猫招き (lit. "cat beckoning"; reverse it and you get 招き猫, the "beckoning cat" statue it resembles) and キング ("king"). For the record, the Syllable cards are likely meant to evoke onomatopoeia; they could in theory be translated, but any attempt would probably just sound silly. And yeah, "Kagetokage" is clearly "Shadow Lizard" - it sure as hell can be translated, especially given the monster's actual appearance. Apply a little common sense here. I finally thought to look for TDX's site so I could give him a piece of my mind, but really...what the hell do you say to a man who needs a reason to translate 椅子取りゲーム properly as "Musical Chairs"?--Ryusui (talkcontribs) 01:13, June 15, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, and yeah, ハネ is 羽. "Wing Kuriboh," "Winged Kuriboh," whichever - the latter is more grammatical, so really, I'd argue that a "translation" is redundant.--Ryusui (talkcontribs) 01:38, June 15, 2012 (UTC)
III didn't reply, but he edited some of the examples I linked to. He seems to be in favour of translating the katakana for "Winged Kuriboh", "Gearspring Catapult" and "Tinplate Archduke", but not for "Neko Mane King". (Those links go to his edits.) -- Deltaneos (talk) 22:43, June 17, 2012 (UTC)
I would note that the Syllable cards are not an exception to this. We don't translate them for English page names, since the TCG doesn't. But that doesn't change the fact "Kagetokage" means "Shadow Lizard". Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 00:30, June 18, 2012 (UTC)
He just deleted the translations; they still aren't translated. Neji means screw and maki means winding, so they're basically something similar to Wind-Up. I don't see what deleting the translations will accomplish. MadRest 21:32, June 18, 2012 (UTC)
The translated name is only added if it's different than the English name. By deleting them, he was implying that the English names were valid translations. -- Deltaneos (talk) 23:39, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

Requesting page move for Hairon

The English name for Hairon being changed to Hanion has no basis whatsoever other than continuity.

Both the anime and TF6 game has its name as 'ハイロン', Hairon. There is still no English air date for the episode it was featured in. Sephylon, the Ultimate Timelord clearly shows that the Timelords' name don't have to end with '-ion'.

That is why to follow with its Japanese name and to follow the TCG English name for Metaion, the Timelord and Sephylon; I suggest keeping its name as 'Hairon, the Timelord'.  HHT   - (Talk to the Turtle) 09:50, June 8, 2012 (UTC)

Okay. Before I do... There's a lot of variation among the other "Timelord" pages as to whether it's "Timelord" or "Time Lord" and whether or not there's a comma after the name at the start. I'm guessing they should all be "Timelord" and with a comma based on the two that have English releases. Can you confirm this first so I don't end up moving the pages more times than I need to? -- Deltaneos (talk) 11:02, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
Metaion and Sephylon are the only ones released in the TCG and the OCG. It is relatively safe to follow these two cards' TCG English names, that is with a comma and 'Timelord'. Is there anything else that you need?  HHT   - (Talk to the Turtle) 11:14, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
While cleaning-up after the page move, I stumbled on this old forum. -- Deltaneos (talk) 14:52, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
I've also stumbled across that thread but what he said confused me. Razion has the Japanese name 'ラツィオン' pronounced 'Ratsuion'. Tzaphion has the Japanese name 'ザフィオン' pronounced 'Zafion'. I know about their names being derived from Archangels.
However, Hairon really has that character 'ロ' in its name. Naming it Hanion is just because there is an archangel called Haniel seems to bold of a move to me. That's why I was hesitant because I was asking "where is this unwritten rule where they must be '-ion'"? —This unsigned comment was made by Hide Head Turtle (talkcontribs) 15:02, June 8, 2012 (UTC)

New lightbox

Hi, Recently, as part of improving the viewing experience of both photos and videos, we a developed new lightbox for wikia. It is now live on a handful of wikis, and we would like to start rolling out the new version of the lightbox to more wikis, including Yugioh. You might be wondering, what is new in this version? Improvements include:

  • View all types of media (photos and videos) the same lightbox across your wiki (please note that videos that are embedded at width of 320px or larger will play in place on your article and will not launch the lightbox)
  • Continuous viewing - when viewing an item in the lightbox, you can advance through all other photos and videos from the article page
  • Share - you can now easily share out to multiple social media sites and by email right from the lightbox In the new share, the share URLs will share context by sending your friend to the original article page from which you shared with the lightbox loaded with the shared photo or video and all other photos available on the article page loaded into the carousel.
  • Better viewing experience - the lightbox is now larger and displays the maximum possible size of the photos so you can see your media in its best form.

You can see the lightbox in action on Diablo wiki and the Assassin's creed wiki.

Please let me know if this wiki is ok with being in the next group to receive the new lightbox, as well as any questions or concerns you may have. I posted this message to you since you were the most recently active admin. Please let me know if there is somewhere else I should post. Thanks, --Sarah<staff /> (help forum | blog) 21:02, June 12, 2012 (UTC)
