The Millennium Tauk

The Millennium Tauk (せんねんタウク Sennen Tauku) is an item in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. This is the original depiction of the Millennium Necklace.

The Millennium Tauk is one of the seven Millennium Items, which were created to help Egypt defend from foreign invaders.

History

Ancient Egypt

The Millennium Items were created using shadow alchemy and a sacrifice of human lives in the Kul Elna massacre, in order to protect the Egypt from foreign invaders. The first holder of the Millennium Tauk was a High Priestess.[1]

The Millennium Tauk warns Isis of Bakura.

The Millennium Tauk was later passed onto the High Priestess, Isis.[2]

The Millennium Tauk notified Isis of a disturbing future; that an evil shadow, someone with incredible heka, was approaching the Pharaoh's palace. Shortly afterwards, Bakura, King of Thieves arrived, having plundered Akhenamkhanen's tomb, and intending to take the Priests' Millennium Items.[2]

Seto scolded Isis for not foreseeing Mahado's suicide mission against Bakura with the Millennium Tauk, but she reminded him that she cannot see the future of Millennium Item holders. Bakura's fate was left undetermined after the attack. Isis tried see his future with the Tauk, but could not see anything, which Siamun Muran inferred meant that Bakura was either dead or had taken the Millennium Ring.[3]

While the Pharaoh, Atem, was missing, the Millennium Tauk gave Isis a vague premonition; She saw a ripple in dark waters, a reflection of the shadows. If it were to remain as just one ripple, it would soon fade, but if two or three ripples were to overlap they would become a great swell that would drown them in tragedy. In order to prevent that tragedy, they would need a vessel to hold that swell. Akhenaden took that to mean his son, Seto, should become Pharaoh.[4]

Akhenaden acquired all the Millennium Items and placed them in the Tablet of the Pharaoh's Memories, as part of a dark pact with Zorc Necrophades to gain power. He became the High Priest of Darkness and waged war with Atem.[5]

Tomb Guardians

The Millennium Rod and Tauk under the care of the Ishtar family

The Millennium Items were looked after by generations of Tomb Guardians, with the Tauk and Rod falling into the care of the Ishtar family.[6] They saw it as their mission to safeguard the Millennium Items until they could give them to the reincarnation of the Pharaoh's soul.[7]

Ishizu Ishtar came into possession of the Millennium Tauk after her father's death.[8]

Battle City

The Millennium Tauk's prediction of Kaiba's defeat

The Millennium Tauk granted Ishizu Ishtar the ability to see into the near future,[9] including a dark future where he brother, Marik succumbed to the evil of Dark Marik.[10] She hoped to use The Tauk's power of foresight to orchestrate a future where Marik could be saved.[11] She foresaw:

She hoped to follow those events and face Dark Marik in the final rounds of Battle City, but even so only expected to have a slight chance of saving Marik.[10]

Ishizu gave Kaiba "The God of the Obelisk" to convince him to hold the Battle City tournament which would draw out the holders of the other God cards.[14] Per her prediction, she expected "The God of the Obelisk" would end up being Kaiba's downfall when she Dueled him.[11]

Dark Yugi came to Ishizu's exhibition per her prediction, after he saw a photo of her with the Millennium Tauk in a newspaper.[15] He asked if her possessing a Millennium Item made her his enemy, which she insisted she was not. She also warned him of the prediction of the battle to regain his memories.[9]

Ishizu qualified for the Battle City quarterfinals, but did not attend the Ultimate Bingo events that determined the matchups, as she already knew what their outcomes would be.[12]

As Ishizu faced Kaiba in the last quarterfinal, she warned him that she had foreseen her victory with Millennium Tauk and that he could not escape fate.[13] Having foreseen Kaiba's moves, she was able to counter them. She acknowledged that this was a dishonest use of the Tauk's power and felt bad for manipulating Kaiba, but was prepared to offer her life as punishment to the Gods if it gave her a chance to save Marik.[11] The Duel played out as she expected until the Millennium Rod showed Kaiba a vision of Seto holding Kisara before a slab of The White Dragon.[16] This convinced Kaiba to attack with "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" instead of "The God of the Obelisk".[10]

Losing to Kaiba gave Ishizu hope, because the Millennium Tauk had shown her a future of darkness, but Kaiba had demonstrated that the futures shown by the Tauk could change.[10]

Ishizu gives the Millennium Tauk to Yugi.

Shizuka Kawai asked Ishizu to use the Millennium Tauk to see who would win when Dark Yugi and Katsuya Jonouchi would get their chance to Duel. However, since losing to Kaiba, the Tauk had been emitting weaker signals and Ishizu felt it losing its powers. She then passed the Tauk on to Yugi, in fulfillment of one of her family's Tomb Guardian duties.[7]

Dark Yugi lost the will to continue fighting when he worried Jonouchi had died in his Duel with Dark Marik. However the Millennium Tauk lit up in his pocket and despite what Ishizu said about it losing its power, it showed Dark Yugi a vision of Jonouchi alive in the future, facing him in a Duel. Believing that future restored his willingness to continue fighting.[17]

Rite of the Duel

Atem placed the Millennium Tauk along with the other six Millennium Items into the Tablet of the Pharaoh's Memories in the Shrine of the Underworld. This caused him to split into a separate body from Yugi, so that the two may face each other for the Rite of the Duel.[18] By experiencing defeat, Atem was deemed ready to pass on. His passing through the door to the afterlife, caused the Tablet of the Pharaoh's Memories to break and fall into the depths of the earth, taking the Millennium Items with it.[19]
