The Millennium Rod

The Millennium Rod (せんねんロッド Sennen Roddo) is an item in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. This is the original depiction of the Millennium Rod.

The Millennium Rod is one of the seven Millennium Items, which were created to help Egypt defend from foreign invaders.

Powers[edit]

In ancient Egypt, like all Millennium Items, the Millennium Rod could be used to summon up to three ka from stone slabs in the Shrine of Wedju.[1] Uniquely, it could be used to seal ka within stone slabs.[2]

Like other Millennium Items, the Rod could be used to turn games into Shadow Games[3] and inflict Penalty Games on the losers.[4]

Holders of the Millennium Rod, namely Seto, were capable of sealing their memories inside it. People with a strong association to that holder were capable of seeing the memories in the form of visions.[5]

In the twentieth century, the Millennium Rod enabled its wielder to control the minds of any individual it came into contact with[6] and to be able to do so from a distance.[7] In doing so, the wielder implants a part of themself in the victim.[8] The mind-control powers include:

  • Being able to brainwash a person, such that they act on their own accord, but follow motives the wielder gave them[9]
  • Ability to take complete control of the individual, in which case the skin on the forehead of the person being controlled swells and takes the form of the Eye of Wadjet[10][9][11]
  • Access to the controlled individual's memories[9][12][13]
  • Ability to see through the individual's eyes[14]

If the user were to die, any traces of themself that they implanted in other people would die too.[15]

Marik Ishtar described The Millennium Rod's power by noting how easily people are influenced, how they can create split personalities or believe they hear God and by combining his charisma and dominance with their internal image of God, he could control them with the Rod.[12] He noted that by using its powers he could kill someone by just thinking about it.[7]

People are capable of resisting the Millennium Rod's brainwashing if substantial feelings or memories of their former self are invoked.[16][17] Some individuals, such as Dark Bakura are immune to the Rod's influence.[18]

The Millennium Rod could be used to immobilize people[4] and to throw their bodies a distance without coming into contact with them.[19][8]

The Millennium Rod was capable of giving select people the ability to translate the hieratic text printed on "The Sun Dragon Ra".[20]

The handle of the Millennium Rod acts a sheath concealing a blade inside it.[3]

History[edit]

Ancient Egypt[edit]

Seto uses the Millennium Rod to seal Dark Spirit of Chaos in a stone slab.

The Millennium Items were created using shadow alchemy and a sacrifice of human lives in the Kul Elna massacre, in order to protect the Egypt from foreign invaders. The first holder of the Millennium Rod was a High Priest.[21]

The Millennium Rod was later passed on to the High Priest, Seto.

A criminal, who attempted to rob Akhenamkhanen's tomb, was brought before Atem and the High Priests. Seto used the Millennium Rod to seal the man's evil ka, Dark Spirit of Chaos, in a stone slab.[2]

Bakura, King of Thieves confronted the High Priests with his ka, Diabound, which Seto attempted to seal in a stone slab, using the Millennium Rod. However, Diabound's power was too great and it broke free from the tablet.[22] Seto then used the Rod to summon Galestgoras from the Shrine of Wedju to battle Diabound.[23]

During a Diaha with prisoners, Seto hooked the Millennium Rod onto a chain and held onto it to stop himself and Kisara falling after the suspended platform was cut down.[24]

Akhenaden acquired all the Millennium Items and placed them in the Tablet of the Pharaoh's Memories, as part of a dark pact with Zorc Necrophades to gain power. He became the High Priest of Darkness and waged war with Atem.[25]

Seto held the Millennium Rod when he carried Kisara's body to the stone slab of The White Dragon.[5] and used the Rod to summon The White Dragon from the slab in his Diaha with Atem.[26]

At some point, Seto's memories of holding Kisara before the slab[5] and battling Atem were sealed in the Millennium Rod.[5]

Tomb Guardians[edit]

The Millennium Rod and Tauk under the care of the Ishtar family

The Millennium Items were looked after by generations of Tomb Guardians, with the Rod and Tauk falling into the care of the Ishtar family.[27] They saw it as their mission to safeguard the Millennium Items until they could give them to the reincarnation of the Pharaoh's soul.[8]

Dark Marik uses the Rod's powers to pin Marik's father to a wall.

Marik Ishtar's father punished the family servant, Rishid, for helping Marik and Ishizu break the family's rules, by cutting him with a hot knife. He prepared to do the same to Marik, but Rishid falling unconscious allowed Dark Marik to take control of Marik's body. Dark Marik then took the Millennium Rod and used its power to fling his father's body against a pillar. He used it to immobilize both his father and Ishizu as he proceeded to use the Rod's blade to cut the skin containing the Seal of Memories from his father's back. Upon learning Rishid was still alive, he attempted to kill him with the Rod's blade. However Rishid regaining consciousness suppressed Dark Marik, returning control of his body to Marik.[19]

Battle City[edit]

Prior events[edit]

Marik Ishtar was able to translate some but not all of the effects printed in hieratic text on "The Sun Dragon Ra". However the Millennium Rod granted Dark Marik the "full revelation", allowing him to decipher its other abilities.[20]

Marik used the Millennium Rod to implant a bit of himself in the Rare Hunters, allowing him to control them remotely.[10] He arranged for a number of them to be present in Domino City for the Battle City tournament. Among them was the "Doll", whose consciousness Marik had fully controlled with the Millennium Rod. He had the Doll stand on the same spot in Domino Park for two days[11] and programmed him to kill Dark Yugi, should the Doll defeat him in a Duel.[12] He had another keep an eye on Dark Yugi's friends.[28]

Marik was also curious as to why there was a picture of a man that looked like Seto Kaiba holding the Millennium Rod on the mural from the mortuary temple. And hoped to use the tournament as a chance to use the Rod to read Kaiba's memories to find out why.[13]

Preliminaries[edit]

Marik Ishtar uses the Millennium Rod to take complete control of the Rare Hunter and communicate through him

After Dark Yugi defeated a Rare Hunter in the Battle City tournament, Marik took control of the Rare Hunter using the Millennium Rod, in order to introduce himself to Dark Yugi.[10] He demonstrated the power of the Rod by making the Rare Hunter do a humiliating dance.[29]

Similarly, following Pandora's defeat to Dark Yugi, Marik used the Millennium Rod to take full control of him. This time he introduced himself to Yugi Mutou. When he was done, Marik saw Pandora as a loose end that needed tidying up, so used the Millennium Rod to look through the network of Pandora's memories. He found two times he contemplated suicide, forced those memories to resurface and stirred them up a bit, with the intention of having Pandora take his life once he released control of his body.[9]

While Marik traveled from Port Othello to Domino City on his motorcycle, he used the Millennium Rod to inhabit the mind of the Doll and got him to run to Yugi's location, so that he could use the Doll as a proxy in order to Duel Dark Yugi.[11] After Marik's loss, he continued to control the Doll to warn Dark Yugi he had better get to his friends, as he had plans to use them.[28]

The Millennium Ring alerted Dark Bakura to the presence of the Millennium Rod and he confronted Marik announcing his intention to take the Rod.[6] Marik claimed to have no interest in the Millennium Items beyond getting his revenge on Dark Yugi. He proposed an alliance where if Dark Bakura helped him achieve this he would give him the Rod afterwards.[30]

Jonouchi and Anzu turned into "dolls" by the Millennium Rod

Although Marik had plans to use the Millennium Rod brainwash Yugi's friends, Dark Bakura believed they would suspect Marik was up to something and proposed using his "host", Ryo Bakura, as a means of infiltrating them.[31] Under the guise "Namu", Marik helped Bakura, who had been stabbed in the arm by Dark Bakura, as a means of getting close to Katsuya Jonouchi and Anzu Mazaki.[32] He used the Rod to brainwash Jonouchi and Anzu, making them "dolls" who made little movement or reaction outside of his orders.[7] He also brainwashed Bakura such that he would not feel the pain from his wound.[33]

Marik observed Dark Yugi and Seto Kaiba's Duel with his brainwashed Rare Hunters; Mask of Light and Mask of Darkness as a means to assess their Decks. After the Duel, he used the Millennium Rod to take complete control of Mask of Light to introduce himself to Kaiba, alert Dark Yugi that his friends had now been brainwashed, and that he expected Dark Yugi to fight Jonouchi.[14]

At Domino Pier, Marik had his brainwashed Ghouls add Forbidden cards to Jonouchi's Deck.[7] He implanted a desire to kill Dark Yugi in Jonouchi and got him to challenge Dark Yugi to a Duel. Marik spoke to Dark Yugi through Anzu and forced him to accept the Anchor Deathmatch Duel by threatening to command Anzu to swallow a capsule of deadly poison.[34]

Yugi insisted on Dueling instead of Dark Yugi and was able to appeal to Jonouchi's memories of their friendship, enabling him to disobey Marik's orders, despite the Millennium Rod's brainwashing.[16][17] Jonouchi eventually completely snapped out of the Rod's influence[35] and Marik was unable to control him from that point.

Battle Ship[edit]

As the finalists gathered at Domino Stadium, before boarding the Battle Ship, Marik continued to pose as "Namu", while Rishid pretended to be Marik, but Jonouchi and Yugi became suspicious of Marik. However Bakura and Anzu, who were still brainwashed by the Millennium Rod spoke positively about him, putting the suspicions at bay. The brainwashed Bakura also showed Yugi that the Millennium Ring was reacting to a Millennium Item wielder as Rishid arrived, aiding the lie that Rishid was Marik.[18]

Rishid pretends to use the Millennium Rod on Bakura

Dark Bakura faced Dark Yugi in the first quarterfinal. Per his agreement with Marik, if he won, he would take Yugi's "Slifer the Sky Dragon" and exchange it for Marik's Millennium Rod. Marik offered to take control of Ryo Bakura for the Duel, but Dark Bakura was determined to beat Dark Yugi himself.[36] As Dark Bakura was about to lose the Duel, Rishid arrived holding the Millennium Rod. He claimed Bakura was being controlled by the Millennium Rod and that he could prove it by releasing his main personality. Dark Bakura relinquished control of his body to Bakura, who was feeling the pain of his stab wound and Rishid warned that an attack from "Slifer the Sky Dragon" could kill him in that condition. Dark Yugi was reluctant to attack, but Dark Bakura did not approve of this strategy and took back control of Bakura's body, as he possessed the mental strength to withstand the attack.[37] As the injured Bakura was escorted away, Anzu, still brainwashed by Marik, picked up his Millennium Ring.[38]

Dark Marik took full control of Marik's body when Rishid fell into a coma. He went to the room where Rishid was being treated and used the blade concealed in the Rod to kill the doctor. He got ready to similarly kill the unconscious Rishid, but refrained as he was called to Duel in the next quarterfinal.[3]

Dark Marik uses the Millennium Rod to initiate a Shadow Game.

Dark Marik used the Millennium Rod to turn his his quarterfinal Duel against Mai Kujaku into a Shadow Game.[3] At the end of the Duel, Dark Yugi was left unconscious after standing between an attack from "The Sun Dragon Ra" and Mai. Dark Marik unsheathed the Millennium Rod's blade and toyed with the idea of killing Dark Yugi on the spot, but insisted killing him a Shadow Game would be more befitting. He used the Rod's power to immobilize Jonouchi and said he could kill him whenever he wanted. However he left him be and subjected Mai to the "Brain Insects" Penalty Game, giving her 24 hours to be rescued before her mind become completely eroded.[4]

The quarterfinal between Kaiba and Ishizu Ishtar came close to ending in Kaiba's defeat per the Millennium Tauk's prediction. However the Millennium Rod began to react in Dark Marik's hand. It caused Kaiba to see a vision from the memories of the High Priest, Seto. The vision showed the stone slab for The White Dragon, which caused Kaiba to change his strategy and win the Duel with "Blue-Eyes White Dragon".[5]

In the night before the semifinals, Dark Marik made another attempt to kill Rishid with the Millennium Rod's blade. This time he was interrupted by Dark Bakura. Dark Bakura was accompanied by Marik's consciousness from when Marik implanted a part of himself in Bakura when he brainwashed him with the Rod. Dark Bakura repeated his intentions to take the Rod and also see the Seal of Memories on Dark Marik's back. Dark Marik responded by using the Rod's power to fling Dark Bakura across the room and restrain him against a wall. However Dark Bakura was able to use the power of the Millennium Ring to free himself and make Dark Marik unable to use his arm. The two then agreed that as individuals chosen by the Millennium Items they should settle the dispute in a Shadow Game.[8]

Dark Marik used the Millennium Rod to turn his Duel with Dark Bakura into a Shadow Game where the loser would be consumed by darkness.[39] Although Marik informed Dark Bakura on the abilities of Dark Marik's "The Sun Dragon Ra", Dark Marik used their incomplete knowledge to his advantage. The Millennium Rod had allowed him to decipher an ability unknown to Marik, which he used to win the Duel.[20]

Marik used the portion of himself he had implanted in Anzu with the Millennium Rod to take control of her body again to contact Ishizu and ask her to help move Rishid's body to save him from Dark Marik.[40]

Duel Tower[edit]

In the Duel Tower, Dark Marik used the Millennium Rod to turn his his semifinal Duel with Jonouchi into a Shadow Game.[41]

During Kaiba and Dark Yugi's semifinal, their God cards, "The God of the Obelisk" and "Slifer the Sky Dragon" destroyed each other, causing a burst of light. The Millennium Rod and Millennium Puzzle reacted to this and showed Kaiba and Dark Yugi a vision from Seto and Atem's memories, where they battled using the White Dragon and Dark Magician.[26] Kaiba and Dark Yugi proceeded to summon their respective Duel Monsters cards, "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" and "Dark Magician" to continue that battle.[42]

Dark Marik used the Millennium Rod to turn the final Duel between him and Dark Yugi into a Shadow Game. The Shadow Game had Yugi and Marik appear next to their "Dark" counterparts as sacrifices. As a player lost Life Points, the sacrifices body would be consumed by darkness[43] Marik used the part of himself he had implanted in Anzu with the Millennium Rod to take control of her body one last time to speak with Dark Yugi and Ishizu and announce his willingness to be sacrificed if necessary to beat Dark Marik.[15]

Following the defeat of Dark Marik, Marik gave the Millennium Rod to Dark Yugi.[44]

King's Memories[edit]

In the Shadow RPG, events from the time when Seto was the holder of the Millennium Rod were replayed. The events played out largely the same as in the original timeline.[45] Differences included:

  • In the RPG, Dark Bakura cast a spell to freeze time, enabling Akhenaden to easily acquire the Millennium Items, including the Millennium Rod, from the other High Priests, in order to summon Zorc Necrophades.[46]
  • Although, the Millennium Rod was in Seto's possession at the time, it was not on his person when he held Kisara before the stone slab.[47]
  • The Millennium Pendant was not shattered, enabling Seto to inherit it from Atem, while the Millennium Rod was passed on to a different Priest.[48]

Rite of the Duel[edit]

Atem placed the Millennium Rod along with the other six Millennium Items into the Tablet of the Pharaoh's Memories in the Shrine of the Underworld. This caused him to split into a separate body from Yugi, so that the two may face each other for the Rite of the Duel.[49] By experiencing defeat, Atem was deemed ready to pass on. His passing through the door to the afterlife, caused the Tablet of the Pharaoh's Memories to break and fall into the depths of the earth, taking the Millennium Items with it.[50]
