というのが周囲（しゅうい）からの評価（ひょうか）であるが、実（じつ）は祖父（そふ）から遺伝（いでん）した異常（いじょう）なまでの危機（きき）察知（さっち）能力（のうりょく）が彼（かれ）の中（なか）で働（はたら）いており、自分（じぶん）の人生（じんせい）に不利（ふり）になることや危機（きき）を及（およ）ぼすことが不思議（ふしぎ）と感（かん）じとれる体質（たいしつ）のため、臆病（おくびょう）になってしまっている。

Being overprotected like that might have been among the reasons for him to quickly become weary of the world, and, despite his young age, he developed a negative way of thinking as well.

The above is what the people around him believe. What has actually happened is that he inherited a peculiar ability from his grandfather, which lets him sense when a bad situation is about to happen, and he has become rather timid because this ability makes him feel strange when dealing with annoying or dangerous situations.

He senses danger while he is dueling as well, but him losing has no particular consequences, so he ignores his premonitions and continues playing.

He treasures the time he spends dueling because it lets him focus only on the duel itself.

His reserved behavior is actually a consequence of him inheriting his grandfather's ability to sense when a bad situation is about to happen. He actively evaluates how to avoid risky situations as much as possible, making him seem rather cowardly.

This ability manifests while he duels as well, but he ignores it while he is dueling, as him losing a duel has no particular consequences.
It will take him some more time to realize it is possible to face bad situations in life without running away from them.

His sheltered upbringing seems to have made him poor at talking with people other than his relatives, and made him timid in general.
The people around him tend to see him as a pessimist who is lacking in drive.

His reserved behavior is actually a consequence of him inheriting his grandfather's ability to sense when a bad situation is about to happen. He actively evaluates how to avoid risky situations as much as possible, making him seem rather cowardly.

He wants to have a little more courage so that he can face what life has in store for him.
