"Duel With a Ghoul", known as "Resurrection! Magical Silk Hat" in the Japanese version, is the ninth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! second series anime. It first aired in Japan on June 13, 2000 and in the United States on November 24, 2001.

Yugi must Duel a doppelgänger of Kaiba, created from the greed and power Yugi wiped from Kaiba's soul. However, with his best cards resting at the bottom of the ocean, Yugi must discover a new strategy if he's to survive fake Kaiba's "Blue-Eyes White Dragons".

Summary

Yugi has just arrived at the Duel Arena in order to Duel to free Mokuba from Kemo. However, Kemo claims that Yugi's opponent in the duel will be the ghost of Seto Kaiba. He says that the real Seto Kaiba is dead, much to the shock of the gang, while Mokuba protests. Kemo says that Seto died hating Yugi and that his hatred has manifested in his ghost. Yugi accepts the challenge and promises to uncover the fake's true identity.

Back at Pegasus Castle, Pegasus expresses surprise that Seto is dead, to which Croquet responds that that's what he heard. Pegasus says that he'll watch the Duel for entertainment purposes. He says that despite this roadblock, Yugi will eventually come to him - and Pegasus will beat him with his own two hands. (In the dub, Pegasus instead says he will teach Yugi a lesson about the power of the Millennium Items.)

Seto's ghost tells Yugi that when he lost to Yugi, he lost everything, including his life. He says that he's wandering through the darkness, and invites Yugi to join him. Yugi says that there's no way a fake ghost would scare him, but Ghost Seto says that he'll find out once he faces his Deck. Yugi says that Seto's appearance can be imitated, but not his Deck. Kemo thinks to himself that Ghost Seto is no ordinary opponent - he is the first of several Eliminators sent by Industrial Illusions to defeat Yugi. He thinks that Ghost Seto will give Yugi emotional trauma, causing him to lose - and when that happens, Pegasus will gain control of KaibaCorp. (In the dub, Ghost Seto instead talks telepathically to Yugi.) Both Duelists wager three Star Chips, and the Duel begins.

Ghost Seto goes first, and Summons "Hitotsu-Me Giant" in Attack Position and ends his turn. This shocks Yugi, as both he and Mokuba remember the real Seto having "Hitotsu-Me Giant" in his Deck. Yugi thinks there's no way a fake could have Seto's deck, and Summons his "Dark Magician" in Attack Position. It attacks and destroys "Hitotsu-Me Giant", knocking Ghost Seto's Life Points all the way down to 700. Ghost Seto isn't rattled, however, and comments that Yugi is as strong as ever, which seems to rattle Yugi.

Ghost Seto says that he knows what Yugi is thinking - he's wondering if it really is Seto's Deck. Despite Yugi's resistance, he says it's better if Yugi believes him, and reveals that he knows about Yugi losing "Exodia". (In the dub, Ghost Seto says that Yugi already realized this is Seto's deck, and he says he knows Yugi is resigned to defeat without "Exodia".)

Meanwhile, the real Seto is watching two guards near the entrance of a gated mansion. He flashes back to when he jumped out his office window, seemingly to his death, but he managed to catch his fall on the side of the cliff and survive. Seto jumps over a wall into the mansion grounds, then pulls a chain lying on the ground, which reveals a staircase leading underground. Inside is Seto's underground hideout, which he accesses by pulling a book from a bookcase and passing a retinal scan. He turns on his hideout's computer system and asks it to tell him what happened while he was gone. The computer informs him of The Big Five's meeting with Pegasus, and how Pegasus will take over KaibaCorp if Yugi loses a Duel. Seto thinks that Yugi won't go down easily since he has "Exodia", but the computer tells him that Yugi has lost "Exodia", to Seto's shock. He asks about Mokuba, to which the computer responds that Pegasus invited him to Duelist Kingdom. Seto promises to rescue Mokuba, but first he has to stop Pegasus from taking over his company - and to do that, he has to make sure Yugi doesn't lose. Seto orders the computer to find Yugi.

Back at the Duel Arena, Ghost Seto tells Yugi to prepare himself for his ultimate revenge. He reveals his next card, which to Yugi's horror is revealed to be "Blue-Eyes White Dragon", which he Summons in Attack Position. Mokuba is stunned that the deck that Ghost Seto is using really is his brother's. Ghost Seto taunts Yugi once again and claims that Seto really is dead, despite Mokuba's objections.

Back in Seto's hideout, he orders the computer to locate all active Duel Arenas on the island, and then scan each of them to find the one in which Yugi is dueling. However, the computer is denied access. (In the dub, a picture of Funny Bunny indicates that this is Pegasus' doing.) Seto says that he won't give up, and wants to find a way into Millennium, Industrial Illusions' central computer. He orders the computer to search for "Dark Magician", as it is likely to appear on a field where Yugi is dueling, while he hacks into Millennium. The computer takes control of an Industrial Illusions satellite, which acts as a backdoor for Seto to begin hacking Millenium. (In the dub, Seto instead wants to disable the central computer so that they can take on the backup systems with weaker security. The satellite is physically crashed into the central computer in order to disable it.)

At the Duel Arena, Ghost Seto says that he won't attack this turn, but he will get ready to block Yugi's escape routes, and Sets a card face-down. Yugi, without any cards that can beat a "Blue-Eyes", switches "Dark Magician" to Defense Position and Summons "Curse of Dragon" in Defense Position as well. However, Ghost Seto reveals that he was prepared for this, and activates his Trap, "Defense Paralysis", which forces all of Yugi's monsters into Attack Position, as well as disallowing Yugi from Summoning any more Defense Position monsters. Ghost Seto uses "Blue-Eyes" to attack and destroy "Curse of Dragon", reducing Yugi's Life Points to 1000.

Meanwhile, Seto is scanning through all the Duel Arenas to find the one in which Yugi is dueling. When he gets to the final one, Arena #146, the computer suddenly freezes. Seto orders a reboot and attempts to access the arena again, but the same thing happens. However, Seto realizes that something inside the Arena is reacting to the search data for "Dark Magician" from earlier. Seto orders the computer to use a "keyhole destruction program" to blow up the door, which is successful. A picture of a castle appears onscreen, which the computer says is a secret system used for data storage, and says Seto needs a password. Seto declares the password to be "Alcatraz". (In the dub, the password is "Pegasus".) Seto successfully breaks in, and says that Pegasus could never have imagined this twist.

Yugi is beginning to panic back at the Duel Arena, and wonders if there's any way he can win. Mokuba tells Yugi that he still doesn't believe Seto is dead, and recalls the promise that Yugi made to him - that Seto would return. Yugi chooses to believe as well. He activates the Spell "Magical Hats", which conceals "Dark Magician" under one of four hats. Yugi says that if Ghost Seto really is a ghost out for revenge, then he will fire. (In the dub, he instead asks a mysterious question: what else is under the "Hats"?) As the episode ends, Ghost Seto says "as you wish" and orders "Blue-Eyes" to attack one of the "Hats".
