Yusei Fudo and Jack Atlas' first Turbo Duel

Yusei Fudo and Jack Atlas' first Turbo Duel is the third Duel of the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's anime, conducted between Yusei Fudo and Jack Atlas for Yusei to retrieve some items that Jack stole when he left for "New Domino City".

Prior Events[edit]

After escaping from Satellite, Yusei ran into Jack by a highway underpass, who showed no remorse for his past actions. Yusei demanded the return of his Duel Runner and his "Stardust Dragon". Jack informed him that the Duel Runner had since broken, but threw "Stardust Dragon" to Yusei. However, Yusei threw "Stardust Dragon" back to Jack, determined to make Jack pay for betraying him first, then reclaim his card once he had beaten him. The two proceeded to the Kaiba Dome to Duel, unaware that they were now being watched by Rex Goodwin, Mina Simington and Lazar. Since Yusei had refused "Stardust Dragon", Jack placed it in his own Deck for the Turbo Duel.

Featured Duel: Yusei Fudo vs. Jack Atlas[edit]

Before the start of the Duel, as per the rules of a Turbo Duel, the Field Spell "Speed World" is activated. If a player activates a non-"Speed Spell" Spell, they take 2000 damage. During each player's Standby Phase, each player places a Speed Counter on "Speed World", up to a maximum of twelve each. Also, each time a player takes damage, they reduce their Speed Counters by one for every 1000 points of damage they took.

Turn 1: Yusei
Yusei's hand contains "Graceful Revival", "Shield Warrior", "Defense Draw", "Speed Warrior", and "Harmonia Mirror"[Error 1]. Yusei Normal Summons "Quillbolt Hedgehog" (800/800) in Defense Position.

Turn 2: Jack
During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Speed World" activates (Yusei: 0 → 1 SPC, Jack: 0 → 1 SPC). Jack Normal Summons "Mad Archfiend" (1800/0). During battle between the attacking "Mad Archfiend" and a Defense Position monster whose DEF is lower than the ATK of "Mad Archfiend", its effect allows it to inflict the difference as battle damage to Yusei. "Mad Archfiend" attacks and destroys "Quillbolt Hedgehog" (Yusei: 4000 → 3000 LP, 1 → 0 SPC). Jack's hand contains "Twin-Shield Defender", "Big Piece Golem", "Medium Piece Golem", "Dark Resonator", and "Sinister Sprocket".

Turn 3: Yusei
Yusei draws "Junk Synchron". During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Speed World" activates (Yusei: 0 → 1 SPC, Jack: 1 → 2 SPC). Yusei Normal Summons "Junk Synchron" (1300/500). As Yusei controls a Tuner, Yusei activates the effect of "Quillbolt Hedgehog" in his Graveyard, Special Summoning it (800/800) but it is removed from play when it leaves the field. Yusei tunes the Level 3 Tuner "Junk Synchron" with the Level 2 "Quillbolt Hedgehog" to Synchro Summon the Level 5 "Junk Warrior" (2300/1300). "Junk Warrior" attacks and destroys "Mad Archfiend" (Jack: 4000 → 3500 LP).

Turn 4: Jack
Jack draws "Spacegate". During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Speed World" activates (Yusei: 1 → 2 SPC, Jack: 2 → 3 SPC). Jack Normal Summons "Twin-Shield Defender" (700/1600) in Defense Position. Jack Sets a card.

Turn 5: Yusei
Yusei draws "Spacegate"[Error 2]. During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Speed World" activates (Yusei: 2 → 3 SPC, Jack: 3 → 4 SPC). Yusei's hand contains "Ghost Gardna", "Harmonia Mirror", "Speed Warrior", "Counterattack Beacon", and "Meteor Stream". Yusei Normal Summons "Speed Warrior" (900/400). The effect of "Junk Warrior" increases its ATK equal to the total ATK of all face-up Level 2 or lower monsters Yusei controls[Notes 1] ("Junk Warrior": 2300 → 3200 ATK). During the Battle Phase, as "Speed Warrior" was Normal Summoned this turn, Yusei activates its effect, doubling its original ATK until the end of the Battle Phase ("Speed Warrior": 900 → 1800 ATK). "Speed Warrior" attacks and destroys "Twin-Shield Defender". As the face-up Defense Position "Twin-Shield Defender" Jack controls was destroyed by battle and sent to his Graveyard, he activates its effect, halving the current ATK of a face-up monster Yusei controls until the End Phase. He halves the ATK of "Junk Warrior" ("Junk Warrior": 3200 → 1600 ATK). "Junk Warrior" attacks Jack directly (Jack: 3500 → 1900 LP, 4 → 3 SPC). Jack activates his face-down Continuous Trap "Spacegate", placing a Gate Counter on it for each time a monster Yusei controls attacks or is attacked this turn[Error 3]. "Speed Warrior" and "Junk Warrior" attacked this turn, so he places two Gate Counters on "Spacegate" ("Spacegate": 0 → 2 Gate Counters). Yusei Sets a card.

Turn 6: Jack
During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Speed World" activates (Yusei: 3 → 4 SPC, Jack: 3 → 4 SPC). As Jack has 4 or more Speed Counters, he activates "Speed Spell - Speed Fusion", Fusion Summoning a Fusion Monster from his Extra Deck using monsters from his hand or field as Fusion Materials. He fuses "Big Piece Golem" and "Medium Piece Golem" in his hand to Fusion Summon "Multiple Piece Golem" (2600/1300). "Multiple Piece Golem" attacks "Speed Warrior". During damage calculation during Jack's turn, Yusei activates his face-down Trap "Defense Draw", making the battle damage he would take from this battle 0, then drawing a card. The attack continues and "Speed Warrior" is destroyed ("Junk Warrior": 3200 → 2300 ATK)[Error 4]. The battle damage becomes 0 and Yusei draws a card. At the end of the Battle Phase, as "Multiple Piece Golem" attacked or was attacked, Jack activates its effect, returning it to the Extra Deck, then if all of the Fusion Material Monsters that were used for its Fusion Summon are in his Graveyard, he can Special Summon them. He returns "Multiple Piece Golem" to his Extra Deck, then Special Summons "Big Piece Golem" (2100/0) and "Medium Piece Golem" (1600/0). As "Medium Piece Golem" is Summoned while Jack controls "Big Piece Golem", he activates the effect of "Medium Piece Golem", Special Summoning "Small Piece Golem" (1100/0) from his Deck, but its effects are negated.

Jack Normal Summons "Dark Resonator" (1300/300). Jack tunes the Level 3 Tuner "Dark Resonator" with the Level 5 "Big Piece Golem" to Synchro Summon the Level 8 "Red Dragon Archfiend" (3000/2000). During the Main Phase, Jack activates the effect of "Spacegate", sending it to the Graveyard to Special Summon a monster from his hand whose Level is equal to or lower than the number of Gate Counters on "Spacegate". Jack sends "Spacegate" with two Gate Counters to Special Summon the Level 1 "Sinister Sprocket" (400/0). Jack tunes the Level 1 Tuner "Sinister Sprocket" with the Level 3 "Small Piece Golem" and the Level 4 "Medium Piece Golem" to Synchro Summon the Level 8 "Stardust Dragon" (2500/2000)[Error 5].

Turn 7: Yusei
During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Speed World" activates (Yusei: 4 → 5 SPC, Jack: 4 → 5 SPC). Yusei Normal Summons "Shield Warrior" (800/1600) in Defense Position. Yusei changes "Junk Warrior" from Attack Position to Defense Position. Yusei Sets a card.

Turn 8: Jack
Jack draws "Synchro Deflector". During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Speed World" activates (Yusei: 5 → 6 SPC, Jack: 5 → 6 SPC). "Red Dragon Archfiend" attacks and destroys "Junk Warrior". After damage calculation, as "Red Dragon Archfiend" attacked a Defense Position monster Yusei controls, its effect activates, destroying all Defense Position monsters Yusei controls. "Junk Warrior" and "Shield Warrior" are destroyed. "Stardust Dragon" attacks Yusei directly (Yusei: 3000 → 500 LP, 6 → 4 SPC).

Turn 9: Yusei
During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Speed World" activates (Yusei: 4 → 5 SPC, Jack: 6 → 7 SPC). Yusei's hand contains "Ghost Gardna", "Sonic Chick", "Meteor Stream", and "Counterattack Beacon".</ref>. Yusei Normal Summons "Sonic Chick" (300/300) in Defense Position. Yusei Sets a card.

Turn 10: Jack
During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Speed World" activates (Yusei: 5 → 6 SPC, Jack: 7 → 8 SPC). "Red Dragon Archfiend" attacks "Sonic Chick". The effect of "Sonic Chick" prevents it from being destroyed by battle with a monster that has 1900 or more ATK. The attack continues and "Sonic Chick" is not destroyed. After damage calculation, as "Red Dragon Archfiend" attacked a Defense Position monster Yusei controls, its effect activates, destroying all Defense Position monsters Yusei controls. As a card or effect is activated that would destroy a monster Yusei controls, he activates his face-down Trap "Remote Revenge", negating that effect and destroying all face-up Attack Position monsters Jack controls[Error 6]. As a card or effect is activated that would destroy a card on the field, Jack activates the effect of "Stardust Dragon", Tributing it to negate the activation, then destroy it. The activation of "Remote Revenge" is negated and it is destroyed[Error 7]. Jack Sets two cards. During the End Phase, as the effect of "Stardust Dragon" was activated this turn and was not negated, Jack activates its effect in the Graveyard, Special Summoning it (2500/2000). As a Synchro Monster is Special Summoned except by Synchro Summon, Yusei activates his face-down Trap "Harmonia Mirror", taking control of that monster. Yusei takes control of "Stardust Dragon".

Turn 11: Yusei
Yusei draws "Speed Spell - Silver Contrails". During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Speed World" activates (Yusei: 6 → 7 SPC, Jack: 8 → 9 SPC). As Yusei has five or more Speed Counters, he activates "Speed Spell - Silver Contrails", targeting a WIND monster he controls and increasing its ATK by 1000 during the Battle Phase of this turn. He targets "Stardust Dragon" ("Stardust Dragon": 2500 → 3500 ATK). "Stardust Dragon" attacks "Red Dragon Archfiend". As a face-up Synchro Monster Jack controls is selected as an attack target, he activates his face-down Trap "Synchro Deflector", negating the attack and destroying the monster Yusei controls with the lowest ATK. The attack of "Stardust Dragon" is negated and "Sonic Chick" is destroyed. Yusei Normal Summons "Ghost Gardna" (0/1900) in Defense Position. Yusei Sets two cards.

Turn 12: Jack
During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Speed World" activates (Yusei: 7 → 8 SPC, Jack: 9 → 10 SPC). "Red Dragon Archfiend" attacks "Stardust Dragon". As a face-up monster Yusei controls is selected as an attack target, he activates the effect of "Ghost Gardna", changing the target to it. "Red Dragon Archfiend" attacks and destroys "Ghost Gardna". As "Ghost Gardna" was destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, its effect activates, decreasing the ATK of a face-up monster Jack controls by 1000 until the End Phase. As a monster Yusei controls is destroyed by battle with Jack's attacking monster, Yusei activates his face-down Trap "Counterattack Beacon", increasing the ATK of a face-up monster he controls by 500 points, and conduct battle between it and that monster Jack controls. He increases the ATK of "Stardust Dragon" ("Stardust Dragon": 2500 → 3000 ATK), and "Stardust Dragon" attacks "Red Dragon Archfiend". During damage calculation, as the ATK of Jack's battling monster is lower than the ATK of Yusei's, Jack activates his face-down Trap "Prideful Roar", paying Life Points equal to the difference in ATK to increase his monster's ATK equal to that difference plus 300 during damage calculation only. The difference in ATK is 1000, so Jack pays 1000 Life Points (Jack: 1900 → 900 LP, "Red Dragon Archfiend": 2000 → 3300 ATK). During damage calculation, Yusei activates the effect of "Shield Warrior" in his Graveyard, remove it from play to prevent monsters he controls from being destroyed by that battle. The attack continues and "Stardust Dragon" is not destroyed (Yusei: 500 → 200 LP).

As Jack has ten or more Speed Counters, he activates "Speed Spell - End of the Storm", destroying all monsters on the field, then for each monster destroyed and sent to the Graveyard by this effect, that monster's controller takes 300 points of damage. As a card or effect is activated that would destroy a card on the field, Yusei activates the effect of "Stardust Dragon", Tributing it to negate the activation, then destroy it. The activation of "End of the Storm" is negated and it is destroyed. During the End Phase, as the effect of "Stardust Dragon" was activated this turn and was not negated, Yusei activates its effect in the Graveyard, Special Summoning it (2500/2000). As a monster was Special Summoned during the turn it was sent from the field to the Graveyard as a Tribute, Yusei activates his face-down Trap "Meteor Stream", inflicting 1000 damage to your opponent.

At this point, the appearance of the Crimson Dragon causes both players' Duel Runners to malfunction and crash, suspending the Duel before the effect of "Meteor Stream" could resolve, leaving the Duel with no outcome.

Aftermath[edit]

Due to unforseen circumstances, the Duel did not finish. Had the Duel continued, however, Yusei would have won by use of his final face-down card "Meteor Stream". Though initially unaware of this, once Jack learned what Yusei had activated, he considered the Duel a loss. Glowing marks appear on Yusei and Jack's right arms, signaling something special about the two of them. As he was Dueling illegally on private property, as well as being in New Domino City illegally, Yusei is arrested and is sent to The Facility; Jack Dueling a Satellite citizen was covered up to avoid tarnishing his repuation.

Cards used[edit]

The following cards were used in this Duel.

Errors[edit]

  1. These cards were wrongly animated. They should instead be "Ghost Gardna", "Harmonia Mirror", "Speed Warrior", "Counterattack Beacon", and "Meteor Stream".
  2. Based on the cards played afterwards, this card is wrongly animated, and should instead be "Defense Draw".
  3. In the written Japanese anime lore of "Spacegate" this effect activates each time a monster Yusei controls declared an attack while "Spacegate" is face-up.
  4. At this point, the effect of "Spacegate" would have placed a third Gate Counter on it, but this was not shown, nor was the third counter present when Jack sent it to the Graveyard.
  5. In the written Japanese anime lore of "Red Dragon Archfiend", during the End Phase, "Stardust Dragon" should have been destroyed as it did not declare an attack.
  6. In the written Japanese anime lore of "Remote Revenge", it can only be activated when a monster Yusei controls is targeted by a Spell, Trap, or Effect Monster's effect that destroys 1 monster on the field, however the effect of "Red Dragon Archfiend" does not target, so Yusei should not have been able to activate this card.
  7. Although the activation of the effect of "Remote Revenge" is negated, "Sonic Chick" remained on the field, when the part of the effect that negates the effect of "Red Dragon Archfiend" is itself negated by "Stardust Dragon", so "Sonic Chick" should have been destroyed.
  8. This card was wrongly animated as being part of Yusei's opening hand, however it was never used in the Duel.

Notes[edit]

  1. In the written Japanese anime lore of "Junk Warrior" this effect activates when it is Synchro Summoned.
