North American World Championship Qualifier 2018 Special: Jean-Claude Magnum vs. Zigfried von Schroeder was a scripted Duel that took place during the 2018 North American World Championship Qualifier in Fort Worth, Texas on July 1, 2018. Greg Abbey and Oliver Wyman reprised their roles as Jean-Claude Magnum and Zigfried von Schroeder, respectively.

Synopsis

Siegfried von Schroeder arrives at the World Championship Qualifier and plans to defeat the best Duelist there to generate positive PR for the Schroeder Corporation. Jean-Claude Magnum pridefully declares himself the best Duelist there, saying that he's come a long way since his defeat to Mai Valentine in Battle City. Zigfried dismisses him as a threat but, due to his fame, accepts the challenge to generate the PR that he seeks. A worthy rival of Seto Kaiba has every right to be confident about winning, but defeating Jean-Claude's ninjas may be harder than he thinks.

Featured Duel: Jean-Claude Magnum vs. Zigfried von Schroeder

Turn 1: Zigfried von Schroeder
Zigfried Normal Summons "Valkyrie Dritte" (1000/1600) in Defense Position and activates its effect: if it is Normal or Special Summoned, he can add 1 "Valkyrie" card from his Deck to his hand, except another copy of "Dritte". He adds "Valkyrie Zweite" from his Deck to his hand. Zigfried activates the Continuous Spell "Goddess Skuld's Oracle" and activates its first effect: when it is activated, and all monsters Zigfried controls are "Valkyrie" monsters (min. 1), he can add 1 "Goddess Verdande's Guidance" from his Deck to his hand. Zigfried activates the Continuous Spell "Goddess Verdande's Guidance" and activates its first effect: when it is activated, and all monsters Zigfried controls are "Valkyrie" monsters (min. 1), he can add 1 "Goddess Urd's Verdict" from his Deck to his hand. Zigfried activates the Continuous Spell "Goddess Urd's Verdict". Due to its first effect, his opponent cannot target "Valkyrie" monsters he control with card effects, also they cannot be destroyed by his opponent's card effects. Zigfried activates the second effect of "Goddess Skuld's Oracle": during his Main Phase, Zigfried can look at the top 3 cards of his opponent's Deck, and if he does, he places them back on top of their Deck in any order, but he cannot Normal or Special Summon monsters for the rest of this turn, except Fairy monsters. He looks at the top 3 cards of Magnum's Deck and rearranges them back on top of Magnum's Deck. Zigfried activates the second effect of "Goddess Verdande's Guidance": he can declare 1 type of card (Monster, Spell, or Trap), then he reveals the top card of his opponent's Deck and if it was the declared type, they Set it to their field. Otherwise, they add it to their hand. Zigfried declares "Spell" and the top card of Magnum's Deck is revealed to be the Normal Spell "Pot of Greed". As Zigfried guessed correctly, Magnum's Sets the card to his Spell & Trap Zone. Zigfried activates the second effect of "Goddess Urd's Verdict": he can declare 1 card name, then target 1 Set card his opponent controls, then he reveals the Set card, and if it was the declared card, it is banished. Otherwise, Zigfried must banish 1 card he controls. He declares "Pot of Greed" and targets the Set card in Magnum's Spell & Trap Zone, which is revealed to be "Pot of Greed". Since he guessed correctly, Zigfried banishes that card. Zigfried activates the Continuous Spell "Shard of Greed": each time Zigfried draws a card(s) for his normal draw in his Draw Phase, he place 1 Greed Counter on "Shard of Greed". In addition, during his Main Phase, he can send "Shard of Greed" with 2 or more Greed Counters to the GY, and if he does, he draws 2 cards.

Turn 2: Jean-Claude Magnum
Magnum activates the Field Spell "Hidden Village of Ninjitsu Arts". Since his opponent controls a monster(s), while he controls no monsters, Magnum Special Summons "Earth Armor Ninja" (1600/1200) in Attack Position to his right-most Main Monster Zone. Magnum Normal Summons "Upstart Golden Ninja" (500/1800) in Defense Position. Magnum activates the effect of "Upstart Golden Ninja": he can send 1 Trap from his hand to his GY, in order to Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Ninja" monster from his Deck in face-up or face-down Defense Position. He sends the Continuous Trap "Ninjitsu Art of Decoy" from his hand to his GY, and Special Summons the Level 4 "Ninja Grandmaster Hanzo" (1800/1000) from his Deck in face-up Defense Position, and activates its second effect: when it is Flip or Special Summoned, Magnum can add 1 "Ninja" monster from his Deck to his hand, except another copy of "Grandmaster Hanzo". He adds "Yellow Ninja" from his Deck to his hand. Magnum sets "Upstart Golden Ninja" and "Grandmaster Hanzo" (2 "Ninja" monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Ninja Grandmaster Saizo" (2000/↙↘) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side, so that its bottom-right Link Arrow is pointing to "Earth Armor Ninja" (due to the second effect of "Grandmaster Saizo", while it points to a monster(s), it cannot be targeted for an attack, also Magnum's opponent cannot target it with card effects). Magnum activates the first effect of "Hidden Village": if a "Ninja" monster is Summoned to his field, he can target 1 "Ninja" monster or 1 "Ninjitsu Art" card in his GY, and add it to his hand, but he cannot activate cards, or the effects of cards, with that name for the rest of this turn. He targets and adds "Grandmaster Hanzo" from his GY to his hand. Magnum activates the first effect of "Grandmaster Saizo": during his Main Phase, he can Set 1 "Ninjitsu Art" Spell/Trap directly from his Deck. He Sets the Continuous Trap "Ninjitsu Art of Transformation" directly from his Deck to his field.

"Grandmaster Saizo" attacks and destroys "Dritte".

"Earth Armor Ninja" attacks Zigfried directly (Zigfried: 4000 → 2400 LP).

Turn 3: Zigfried von Schroeder
When Zigfried draws a card for his normal draw during his Draw Phase, 1 Greed Counter is placed on "Shard of Greed" (Greed Counters: 0 → 1).

Zigfried activates the Normal Spell "Dark Hole", in order to destroy all monsters on the field. In response, Magnum uses the second effect of "Hidden Village": if a "Ninja" monster(s) or "Ninjitsu Art" card(s) he controls would be destroyed by battle or an opponent's card effect, he can banish 1 "Ninja" monster from his GY instead. He banishes "Upstart Golden Ninja" from his GY to prevent "Grandmaster Saizo" and "Earth Armor Ninja" from being destroyed by the effect of Zigfried's "Dark Hole". Zigfriend activates the Normal Spell "Monster Reborn", allowing him to target 1 monster in either player's GY, and Special Summon it to his field. He targets "Dritte" in his GY and Special Summons it to his field in Defense Position, and activates its first effect again, adding "Valkyrie Erste" from his Deck to his hand. Due to the second effect of "Dritte", it gains 200 ATK for each of Zigfried's opponent's banished monsters: there is currently 1 ("Dritte": 1000 → 1200 ATK). Zigfried Tributes "Dritte" to Tribute Summon "Zweite" (1600/1600) in Attack Position and activates its first effect: if it is Summoned, he can target 1 monster his opponent controls, and destroy it. He targets and destroys "Grandmaster Saizo" [1]. Zigfriend activates the second effect of "Goddess Skuld's Oracle" again, looking at and rearranging the top 3 cards of Magnum's Deck. Zigfried activates the second effect of "Goddess Verdande's Guidance" again, declaring "Monster" and the top card of Magnum's Deck is revealed to be the Effect Monster "Red Dragon Ninja". Since Zigfried's guess was correct, it is Special Summoned to Magnum's field in face-down Defense Position. Zigfried activates the second effect of "Goddess Urd's Verdict" again, declaring "Red Dragon Ninja" and targeting Magnum's Set monster, which is revealed to be "Red Dragon Ninja". Since he guessed correctly, Zigfried banishes that card.

"Zweite" attacks "Earth Armor Ninja". In response, Magnum activates his Set Continuous Trap "Ninjitsu Art of Transformation", allowing him to Tribute 1 face-up "Ninja" monster, in order to Special Summon 1 Beast, Winged Beast, or Insect monster from his hand or Deck, whose Level is less than or equal to the Level the Tributed monster had on the field +3, however when "Ninjitsu Art of Transformation" leaves the field, Magnum must destroy that monster. Magnum Tributes the Level 5 "Earth Armor Ninja" and Special Summons the Level 7 Beast-type "Black Dragon Ninja" (2800/1600) in Attack Position. Magnum activates the first effect of "Hidden Village", adding "Ninjitsu Art of Decoy" from his GY to his hand. A replay occurs, but Zigfried chooses not to attack.

Zigfried Sets 1 card in his Spell & Trap Zone.

Turn 4: Jean-Claude Magnum
Magnum Normal Summons "Yellow Ninja" (1900/1800) in Attack Position, and activates its effect: if it is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up, he can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Ninja" monster from his hand in Attack Position or face-down Defense Position, also he cannot Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck for the rest of this turn, except "Ninja" monsters. He Special Summons the Level 4 "Grandmaster Hanzo" from his hand in Attack Position and activates its second effect again, adding a second copy of "Yellow Ninja" from his Deck to his hand. Magnum activates the Normal Spell "Double Summon", allowing him to perform an additional Normal Summon this turn. Magnum Tributes "Grandmaster Hanzo" to Tribute Summon "Blue Dragon Ninja" (2100/1200) in Attack Position. Magnum activates the first effect of "Hidden Village" again, targeting and adding "Grandmaster Hanzo" from his GY to his hand.

"Blue Dragon Ninja" attacks "Zweite". In response, Zigfried acivates his Set Counter Trap "Negate Attack", targeting the "Blue Dragon Ninja" that is attacking, negating that attack, and ending the Battle Phase.

Magnum attempts to attack "Zweite" with "Black Dragon Ninja", however, as "Negate Attack" has ended the Battle Phase and it is now Main Phase 2, Magnum can no longer attack.

Magnum Sets 1 card in his Spell & Trap Zone.

Turn 5: Zigfried von Schroeder
When Zigfried draws a card for his normal draw during his Draw Phase, 1 Greed Counter is placed on "Shard of Greed" (Greed Counters: 1 → 2).

Zigfried activates the second effect of "Shard of Greed", sending it with at least 2 Greed Counters from his field to his GY, and drawing 2 cards. Zigfried activates the Normal Spell "Pot of Greed", allowing him to draw 2 cards. Zigfried activates the Normal Spell "Pot of Desires", banishing to top 10 cards of his Deck face-down, and then he draws 2 cards. Zigfriend activates the second effect of "Goddess Skuld's Oracle" again, looking at and rearranging the top 3 cards of Magnum's Deck. Zigfried activates the second effect of "Goddess Verdande's Guidance" again, declaring "Monster" and the top card of Magnum's Deck is revealed to be the Effect Monster "Armed Ninja". Since Zigfried's guess was correct, it is Special Summoned to Magnum's field in face-down Defense Position. Zigfried activates the second effect of "Goddess Urd's Verdict" again, declaring "Armed Ninja" and targeting Magnum's Set monster, which is revealed to be "Armed Ninja". Since he guessed correctly, Zigfried banishes that card. Zigfried activates the Quick-Play Spell "Cosmic Cyclone": by paying 1000 LP (Zigfried: 2400 → 1400 LP), he can target 1 Spell/Trap on the field, and banish it. He targets and banishes "Hidden Village". Zigfried activates the Normal Spell "Heavy Storm", in order to destroy all Spell/Traps on the field. In response, Magnum chains his Set Continuous Trap "Ninjitsu Art of Decoy", allowing him to target 1 "Ninja" monster he controls and make it unable to be destroyed in battle, while "Decoy" is face-up on the field. He targets "Black Dragon Ninja". Magnum then chains the effect of "Black Dragon Ninja": during either player's turn, he can send 1 "Ninja" monster and 1 "Ninjitsu Art" card from his hand and/or face-up from his field to his GY, then target 1 monster on the field, and banish it. However, if "Black Dragon Ninja" leaves the field while face-up, then all monsters banished by this card's effect are Special Summoned to their owner's field(s). Magnum sends "Aqua Armor Ninja" from his hand and "Decoy" from his face-up field to his GY, and banishes "Black Dragon Ninja". The rest of the chain resolves and "Heavy Storm" destroys "Transformation", "Goddess Skuld's Oracle", "Goddess Verdande's Guidance", and "Goddess Urd's Verdict". As "Black Dragon Ninja" left the field while face-up, all monsters banished by its effect are Special Summoned to their owner's field, therefore Magnum Special Summons "Black Dragon Ninja" to his field in Attack Position. Zigfried activates the Equip Spell "Silver Bow and Arrow" and equips it to "Zweite". A Fairy monster equipped with "Silver Bow and Arrow" gains 300 ATK/DEF ("Zweite": 1600 → 1900 ATK/1600 → 1900 DEF). Zigfried Normal Summons a second copy of "Dritte" and activates its first effect, allowing him to add "Ride of the Valkyries" from his Deck to his hand. Due to its second effect, "Dritte" gains 200 ATK for each of Zigfried's opponent's banished monsters: there are currently 3 ("Dritte": 1000 → 1600 ATK). Zigfried activates the Normal Spell "Ride of the Valkyries", allowing him to Special Summon any number of "Valkyrie" monsters with different names from his hand, however during his End Phase of the turn he activated this card, he must shuffle all monsters he controls into his Deck. He Special Summons "Zweite", "Erste" (1600/1800), and "Valkyrie Brunhilde" (1800/2000) from his hand, all in Attack Position. Due to the second effect of "Brunhilde", it gains 500 ATK for each monster Zigfried's opponent controls: there are currently 3 ("Brunhilde": 1800 → 3300 ATK). Due to the second effect of "Ride of the Valkyries", since Zigfried Special Summoned 3 or more monsters with its first effect, he takes no battle damage until the end of the next turn. Zigfried activates the first effect of "Zweite" [2] again, targeting and destroying "Black Dragon Ninja" ("Brunhilde": 3300 → 2800 ATK). Zigfried activates the fourth effect of "Ride of the Valkyries", allowing him to banish it from his GY, in order to add 1 "Mischief of the Time Goddess" from his Deck to his hand.

"Brunhilde" attacks and destroys "Blue Dragon Ninja" (Magnum: 4000 → 3300 LP).

The copy of "Zweite" that is equipped with "Silver Bow and Arrow" attacks "Yellow Ninja". Both are destroyed by this battle in a Double K.O.. As the monster is was equipped to left the field, "Silver Bow and Arrow" is destroyed.

The second copy of "Zweite" attacks Magnum directly (Magnum: 3300 → 1700 LP).

"Dritte" attacks Magnum directly (Magnum: 1700 → 100 LP).

"Erste" attacks Magnum directly. In response, Magnum activates the effect of "Aqua Armor Ninja" in his GY: when his opponent's monster declares a direct attack, and he has another "Ninja" monster in his GY, then he can banish "Aqua Armor Ninja" from his GY to target the attacking monster, and negate that attack. He banishes "Aqua Armor Ninja" from his GY, targets the attacking "Erste" and negates the attack.

At the end of the Battle Phase, Zigfried activates the Quick-Play Spell "Mischief of the Time Goddess": if all monsters he controls are "Valkyrie" monsters (min. 1), he sends this card to the GY, also, immediately after this effect resolves, he skips to the start of the Battle Phase of his next turn, but if he does, he cannot activate another copy of "Mischief of the Time Goddess" until the end of that turn. In addition, neither player can activate cards or effects in response to this card's activation.

Turn 6: Zigfried von Schroeder
"Brunhilde", "Erste", "Zweite", and "Dritte" all attack Magnum directly (Magnum: 100 → 0 → 0 → 0 → 0 LP).

Featured cards

Cards in italics debuted here prior to an anime or manga appearance. Cards in bold have never been used by the character in any canon series.

Notes

  1. Zigfried shouldn't have been allowed to do this, because the second effect of "Ninja Grandmaster Saizo prevents the opponent from targeting it for an attack or with a card effect.
  2. Zigfried incorrectly calls this monster "Erste".
