Umi (海 Umi) is a series of cards focused around the Field Spell Card "Umi". The core of the series is a group of Field Spell Cards that are "Umi" or are always treated as "Umi". The series features multiple supporting cards who have effects revolving around having a face-up "Umi" Field Spell.
 +

 +
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, Mako Tsunami used a WATER Deck that utilized the Ocean terrain and later the "Umi" Field Spell, and has been informally associated with the "Umi" card series. In Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS, there are three users of "Umi"-centric strategies; Skipjack's Fish Deck utilized the Field Spell "Big Umi" with all cards that mentioned it also working with the regular "Umi". Yujin Goha used the Dolphin series of Sea Serpent monsters (as well as "Levia-Dragon - Daedalus") that utilize "Umi" and/or "Big Umi" as part of their core strategy. Oceania Illumilina's Thunder Deck utilizes "Umi" to power up her monsters, accompanying cards that deal burn damage.

Mako Tsunami Related
The monsters used by Mako Tsunami in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, as well as their retrained forms, form an informal series of "Umi"-related cards. Their members are usually directly supported by "Umi". Mako Tsunami is also thematically associated with the "Sea Stealth" Spell/Traps, the "Kairyu-Shin" Spell/Traps (through the monster), and "Fish Sonar".

Support (Rush Duel)
 +
Early in Rush Duel, the only two "Umi"-supporting cards released referenced Skipjack's deck, and helps his strategy in assembling low-ATK Fish monsters for "Hydro Cannon Big Bluefin"'s effect while using "Big Umi" to keep the opponent's monsters' power level in check. These cards are "Anchor Moray", which helps recovering low-Level Fish Normal Monsters, and "Aqua Boost", which is a Type-based ATK-boosting Spell for Fish monsters in general.
 +

 +
The release of Deck Mod Pack: Chaotic Omega Rising!! brought a full set of support for "Umi"-related strategies in the form of Yujin's cards and some original support cards that work under both "Umi" and "Big Umi", including a proper boss monster that work in any variations of the deck in "Headbutt Cachalot", and a powerful battle Trap in "Dolphin Counterattack".

Playing style
 +
OCG/TCG
 +
An "Umi"-focused Deck is centered on using the Umi Field Spells and the Umi related cards to make plays. The different Umi Field Spells each have different effects, and support different strategies. Typically however, Umi decks revolve around "A Legendary Ocean", who reduces the Level of all WATER monsters in both players' hands and on the field by 1, allowing Level 5 WATER monsters to be Normal Summoned without Tributes, and is also searchable by "Warrior of Atlantis".
 +

 +
The support for monsters that support "Umi" specify monsters that "lists "Umi" in its/their text". Additionally, the Spell/Traps associated with Mako Tsunami introduced in Duelist Pack: Duelists of the Abyss (i.e. "Sea Stealth II", "Kairyu-Shin's Dark Reef", and "Fish Sonar") all support WATER Normal Monsters in addition to "Umi"-supporting monsters, as the original series of Mako Tsunami's monsters are all WATER Normal Monsters.

Playing style
+
A Legendary Ocean (historical)
A Legendary Ocean Deck
+
Historical "Umi" Decks were simple control/beatdown Decks, focusing on using "A Legendary Ocean" with "Gravity Bind" and "Level Limit - Area B" to create lockdowns, and Summoning "Mermaid Knight" and "Amphibious Bugroth MK-3" to beatdown the opponent.
Numerous water decks rely on the Field Spell Card "A Legendary Ocean" to perform powerful effects as discussed below.

Daedalus method
+
Phantasm Spiral
One way to use "A Legendary Ocean" is with the "Levia-Dragon - Daedalus" or its superior, the "Ocean Dragon Lord - Neo-Daedalus". Both monsters' effects require "Umi" to be on the field (which "A Legendary Ocean" is treated as). As a result, the entire field is destroyed except the "Daedalus", leaving the user a clear field to perform direct attacks on the opponent. If "Abyssal Kingshark" is on the field when you activate the effect of "Daedalus", the "Kingshark" is not destroyed. Normally, people would prefer "A Legendary Ocean" for this operation in contrast to "Umi", because Summoning "Levia-Dragon - Daedalus" would only require one Tribute. Others prefer to use the card "Big Wave Small Wave" to Summon "Daedalus", which is a smart addition to WATER Decks using these tactics. Another good idea is using "Warrior of Atlantis" to search out "A Legendary Ocean".
+
Phantasm Spiral
 +
"Phantasm Spiral" Decks are focused on using "Pacifis, the Phantasm City" with its supporting "Phantasm Spiral" Spell/Traps, as well as "Sea Stealth Attack", to outgrind the opponent.

Decrease Level method 1
+
Legendary Fisherman
Another way to use "A Legendary Ocean" is to utilize its Level decreasing effect on WATER monsters on the field and in the hand. Strong Level 5 WATER monsters such as "Giga Gagagigo", "Terrorking Salmon", or "Catapult Turtle" can then be Normal Summoned without Tribute, allowing the user a more efficient way of bringing out monsters to inflict heavy damage.
+
"Legendary Fisherman" Decks are focused on turboing out "The Legendary Fisherman III", which is a board wipe on Summon, has extremely high protection, and can also deal large amounts of battle damage. It can be Summoned by using "A Legendary Ocean" to Normal Summon "The Legendary Fisherman II" without Tributes, then tributing that monster to Special Summon "The Legendary Fisherman III".

Decrease Level method 2
+
Ocean Dragon Lord - Kairyu-Shin i.e. "Umi control"
Another variation of this method utilizes stall cards such as "Gravity Bind" or "Level Limit - Area B" to halt monsters above Level 4. Since the user's WATER monsters (preferably monsters originally Level 4) are decreased in Level, then those monsters would be able to escape the stall cards. This allows "Mermaid Knight" or "Amphibious Bugroth MK-3" to either attack twice or attack directly. In the case of "Bugroth", "Limiter Removal" can prove useful. "Field Barrier" will help in protecting "A Legendary Ocean". Spell/Trap negation and/or removal will be handy as well, including "Dust Tornado", "Twin Twisters"/"Mystical Space Typhoon", or "Solemn Judgment".
+
A modernized Umi Deck introduced in Duelist Pack: Duelists of the Abyss, this Deck is a control deck with a focus on using "A Legendary Ocean" to Normal Summon "Ocean Dragon Lord - Kairyu-Shin", which has a potent floodgate effect and can search out additional Umi-related cards to further strengthen the player's board. The deck also features various interruptions by using "Electric Jellyfish" and "Doom Kraken" as a disruption, while also dodging opponent's removal via a combination of "Sea Stealth Attack" and "Sea Stealth II".

"A Legendary Ocean" Decks to some extent can also utilize Synchro Monsters. "Deep Sea Diva" is a Tuner monster, and when Normal Summoned it can bring out a Level 3 Sea Serpent-Type monster from your Deck, such as "Atlantean Pikeman", "Mermaid Archer", or "Spined Gillman". This can allow a Level 4 or 5 Synchro Monster to be Summoned easily, although with "A Legendary Ocean" it will instead allow the Summoning of lower-Level Synchro Monsters. Additionally, "Deep Sea Diva" has less than 1500 ATK, so it can be added back to your hand by "Salvage".
+
Rush Duel
 +
Generally speaking, most Fish, Sea Serpent, Thunder and Aqua monsters benefit from the Field Spell to some extent. However, certain series' strategies are specifically geared toward using "Umi" and/or "Big Umi". Deck Mod Pack: Chaotic Omega Rising!! also introduced semi-generic cards that can be used with the theme, such as "Light Dolphin" and "Kataomoiruka" for draw power, or "Sea Star Trooper" for Graveyard disruption.
 +

 +
Historically, the first strategy that explicitly incorporated "Big Umi" in Rush Duel was Big Bluefin Beatdown. "Big Umi" weakens the opponent's non-WATER monsters, while the player bombards them with direct attacks from Fish monsters with 1000 or less ATK, such as "Heat Dartfish" or "Shaman Octopus", using the effect of "Hydro Cannon Big Bluefin". "Anchor Moray" can be used to recover "Dartfish" or "Jet Barracuda" or be used as part of the offensive, while reactive Traps (such as the later-released "Dolphin Counterattack") can be used to protect "Big Bluefin" during the opponent's turn.

"A Legendary Ocean" Decks to some extent can also utilize Xyz Monsters. Due to "A Legendary Ocean" lowering the Levels of WATER monsters, it is easy to Summon Rank 3 or lower Xyz Monsters, particularly WATER Xyz Monsters. Also, using original Level 5 WATER monsters whose Levels are lowered by "A Legendary Ocean", such as "Giga Gagagigo" or "Terrorking Salmon", allows the player to Summon Rank 4 Xyz Monsters, such as "Bahamut Shark" which can use its effect to Summon strong Rank 3 or lower WATER Xyz Monsters.
+
Later supports give the theme better power cards such as "Dolphin Counterattack" and "Headbutt Cachalot", as well as the imported "Levia-Dragon - Daedalus" as a powerful choice for the deck's Legend Card.

Weaknesses
+
{{Decklist|Recommended cards (Rush Duel)
One weakness of this Deck is that in order for monsters to reach their full potential, they must have A Legendary Ocean or Umi on the field. This is easily remedied with cards such as Warrior of Atlantis. Another great weakness of this deck is Tualatin, as it can stop you from Summoning any monsters. Adding cards such as Horn of Heaven and Bottomless Trap Hole can help you overcome these hazards.

Umi (うみ Umi) is a series of cards focused around the Field Spell Card "Umi". The core of the series is a group of Field Spell Cards that are "Umi" or are always treated as "Umi". The series features multiple supporting cards who have effects revolving around having a face-up "Umi" Field Spell.

Several card archetypes and series contain multiple cards that directly support "Umi". These include:

Mako Tsunami Related

The monsters used by Mako Tsunami in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, as well as their retrained forms, form an informal series of "Umi"-related cards. Their members are usually directly supported by "Umi". Mako Tsunami is also thematically associated with the "Sea Stealth" Spell/Traps, the "Kairyu-Shin" Spell/Traps (through the monster), and "Fish Sonar".

Support (Rush Duel)

Early in Rush Duel, the only two "Umi"-supporting cards released referenced Skipjack's deck, and helps his strategy in assembling low-ATK Fish monsters for "Hydro Cannon Big Bluefin"'s effect while using "Big Umi" to keep the opponent's monsters' power level in check. These cards are "Anchor Moray", which helps recovering low-Level Fish Normal Monsters, and "Aqua Boost", which is a Type-based ATK-boosting Spell for Fish monsters in general.

OCG/TCG

An "Umi"-focused Deck is centered on using the Umi Field Spells and the Umi related cards to make plays. The different Umi Field Spells each have different effects, and support different strategies. Typically however, Umi decks revolve around "A Legendary Ocean", who reduces the Level of all WATER monsters in both players' hands and on the field by 1, allowing Level 5 WATER monsters to be Normal Summoned without Tributes, and is also searchable by "Warrior of Atlantis".

A Legendary Ocean (historical)

Historical "Umi" Decks were simple control/beatdown Decks, focusing on using "A Legendary Ocean" with "Gravity Bind" and "Level Limit - Area B" to create lockdowns, and Summoning "Mermaid Knight" and "Amphibious Bugroth MK-3" to beatdown the opponent.

Phantasm Spiral

"Phantasm Spiral" Decks are focused on using "Pacifis, the Phantasm City" with its supporting "Phantasm Spiral" Spell/Traps, as well as "Sea Stealth Attack", to outgrind the opponent.

Legendary Fisherman

"Legendary Fisherman" Decks are focused on turboing out "The Legendary Fisherman III", which is a board wipe on Summon, has extremely high protection, and can also deal large amounts of battle damage. It can be Summoned by using "A Legendary Ocean" to Normal Summon "The Legendary Fisherman II" without Tributes, then tributing that monster to Special Summon "The Legendary Fisherman III".

Ocean Dragon Lord - Kairyu-Shin i.e. "Umi control"

Recommended cards (OCG/TCG)

Rush Duel

Generally speaking, most Fish, Sea Serpent, Thunder and Aqua monsters benefit from the Field Spell to some extent. However, certain series' strategies are specifically geared toward using "Umi" and/or "Big Umi". Deck Mod Pack: Chaotic Omega Rising!! also introduced semi-generic cards that can be used with the theme, such as "Light Dolphin" and "Kataomoiruka" for draw power, or "Sea Star Trooper" for Graveyard disruption.

Later supports give the theme better power cards such as "Dolphin Counterattack" and "Headbutt Cachalot", as well as the imported "Levia-Dragon - Daedalus" as a powerful choice for the deck's Legend Card.
