Latest revision as of 07:14, 6 July 2023

There are many occasions in which a card, in the anime, may contradict its lore in the anime. These are usually due to errors on the writers' part.

Yu-Gi-Oh![edit]

  • Swords of Revealing Light (Episodes 1, 14, and 15 only)- Flip all monsters your opponent controls face-up. This card remains on the field for 3 of your opponent's turns. While this card is face-up on the field, monsters your opponent controls cannot declare an attack. Monsters summoned after this card's activation are excluded from this effect.
    • Reason for contradiction: When Kaiba summoned "Judge Man" in episode 1, it was not affected by this card's effect. The same case applied to PaniK summoned "Metal Guardian" in episode 15. All episodes after that used the TCG/OCG effect.
  • Koumori Dragon - 1700 ATK
    • Reason for contradiction: When this card is shown in card form, it correctly shows its ATK at 1500, but every time this card battles a monster, the damage is calculated as if this card has 1700 ATK.
  • Pumpking the King of Ghosts - 1500 ATK
    • Reason for contradiction: When this card is shown in card form, it correctly shows its ATK at 1800, but when it was summoned, its ATK was 1500 and the Field Power Bonus and the Battle Damage that Bonz later receives are based on this.

Activate 1 or both of these effects (simultaneously). ● When an opponent's monster declares an attack: you may negate the attack, and if you do, you may increase the ATK of the attack target by 500 until the End Phase. ● Target 1 face-up monster you control; equip this card to that target. It gains 500 ATK.

    • Reason for contradiction: This card's effect was written in the style of its OCG lore and both "Celtic Guardian" and "Axe Raider" were affected by this card's effect during Yami Yugi and Joey's Duel against Para and Dox (only "Celtic Guardian" lost the boost which occurred after it destroyed "Wall Shadow").
  • Shadow of Eyes - Whoever this Spell is equipped to can use pheromones to tempt their enemies, forcing them into Attack Position and force them to attack.
    • This card made "Dark Magician" attack "Harpie Lady" despite that it was Mai's turn at the timing.
  • Magical Neutralizing Force" - Continuous Magic and Trap Cards used by your opponent lose effect where this card is placed.
    • Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore implies that all Magic Cards loses their effects where this card is placed, but it should only be the opponent's as this card destroyed only "Magical Hats" when Pegasus used it. In the case where Yugi used it, this card destroyed "Toon World" and "Gorgon's Eye" (this was off-screen, but that action prevents Yami Yugi from losing each time "Relinquished" destroyed a Defense Position monster in battle).
  • Living Arrow - The effect of a Spell owned by you or your opponent is given to an opponent's card(s) of your choice.
    • Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore states it only affects the controller's Spell Cards and it only targets one opposing monster on the field. While this would work in this card's Duel debut, it would not in its other major duels as Yugi uses this card against Spell Cards controlled by his opponents (Pegasus' "Magical Neutralizing Force Field" and Keith Howard's "Tribute to The Doomed") and in the case with Pegasus it targeted "Toon World" (a Continuous Spell Card).
  • Magic Jammer - Discard 1 card. Negate all Lingering Spell Card Effects and destroy all Spell Cards on the field.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's anime lore was written in a way that it looked similar to the OCG lore. The anime effect of "Magical Hats" was a Normal Spell Card with a Lingering effect that lasts until all the hats are destroyed and Keith activated this card on his Draw Phase instead of when "Magical Hats" was activated.
  • Scapegoat - Special Summon up to 4 "Sheep Tokens" (Beast-Type/EARTH/Level 1/ATK 0/DEF 0) in Defense Position. These Tokens cannot be Tributed for a Tribute Summon.
    • Both the real card and the anime version of this card forbid the player from summoning other monsters the turn they activate this card (but a Normal Set can still be done), however Joey activates this card during the turn he Normal Summoned "Baby Dragon" during his Duel against Espa Roba. Additionally, this card requires the player to have four unoccupied Monster Card Zones, but during Joey's Duel against Odion, he activated this card while he only had three unoccupied Monster Card Zones.
  • Roulette Spider - Pay half your Life Points. Spin a wheel centered around the monster with the highest ATK on the field. After it stops spinning, that monster must attack in the direction "Roulette Spider" is pointing.
    • Reason for contradiction: Joey payed Life Points to activate this card despite that the written anime lore didn't say this.
  • Graceful Dice (Episodes 64 onward)- Roll a six-sided die and select 1 monster with 500 or less ATK. Multiply its ATK by the number rolled until the End Phase.
    • Reason for contradiction: In this card's debut duel, the effect didn't expire during the End Phase. In later duels, this card's effect does expire on the End Phase.
  • Alligator's Sword Dragon - This card can attack your opponent directly if the only monsters they control are set monsters, EARTH monsters, WATER monsters, or FIRE monsters.
    • Reason for contradiction: Although this card's written anime lore is the same as the OCG lore, Joey was still able to use this card's effect even though Mako's monsters were set.
  • Mask of Weakness - This card can only be activated in the Battle Phase. Select 1 battling monster and decrease the selected monster's ATK by 700 points during the turn this card is activated.
    • Reason for contradiction:This's written anime lore states it targets the attacking monster yet Lumis was able to use this card on "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" when it was attacked by "Rogue Doll".
  • Mystical Refpanel - Activate only when your opponent activates a Spell Card. You may negate the effect of that card. At anytime, you can select and activate one of the following effects.

● Change the target of the Spell Card to another appropriate target. If the Spell Card was an Equip Spell Card, destroy it on the End Phase. ● Use the negated card from the Graveyard as your card or your opponent's card.

    • Reason for contradiction: In episode 78, Yugi had the choice of using "Meteor of Destruction" on either player with this card, but in the end he chose himself as he didn't want to see Joey die. Also "Mask of Brutality" was gone after "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" destroyed "Rogue Doll".
  • Amazoness Archers - Activate only when your opponent declares an attack while you control an "Amazoness" monster or "The Unfriendly Amazon". All monsters your opponent controls are changed to face-up Attack Position (Flip Effects are not activated), and lose 500 ATK as long as they remain face-up on the field. Your opponent must attack with all of their monsters.
    • Reason for contradiction: Mai activated this card while she had "The Unfriendly Amazon" on the field, which could not have been done since that monster isn't valid card for this card's requirements
  • Cold Wave - This card can only be activated during your Main Phase 1. Until your next turn, you and your opponent cannot play or Set any Spell or Trap Cards.
    • Reason for contradiction: When Crump played the card, he played it after summoning "Giant Red Seasnake", but in the real game that would be impossible because this card can only be activated at the start of the controller's Main Phase 1 and nowhere else.
  • Soul Demolition - You can only activate this card's effect when you have a Fiend-Type monster on your side of the field. Both players, during their respective turns, can pay 500 Life Points for each card selected and remove it from play.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's anime lore is the same as its OCG lore (at the time), which would not have helped Seto conduct his winning move as he had three monsters in his Graveyard at the time in contrast to Gozaburo Kaiba who had five monsters in his Graveyard.
  • Cyber Jar - FLIP: Destroy all monsters on the field, then both players reveal the top 5 cards from their Decks, then Special Summon all revealed Level 4 or lower monsters in, face-up Attack Position, face-up Defense Position, or face-down Defense Position, also add any remaining cards to their hand. (If either player has less than 5 cards in their Deck, reveal as many as possible.)
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's effect was the same as the real card in the first two Duels it was used in. However in Kaiba's Duel with Leichter and Yami Yugi's Duel with Noah, the Defense Position monsters summoned by this card's effect were face-up instead of face-down.
  • De-Fusion - Return 1 Fusion Monster on the field to the Fusion Deck. In addition, if all the Fusion Material Monsters are in the owner's Graveyard, Special Summon them all to the Fusion Monster's controller's side of the field.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore, states that it will split a Fusion Monster and negate an attack. However in Yami Yugi's Duel against Noah Kaiba, this card was used with its real game effect due to Yami Yugi using it during his own turn in order to help him win the Duel.
  • XYZ-Dragon Cannon - Battle City arc only. This card can only be Special Summoned from your Extra Deck by sending the above cards you control to the Graveyard. (You do not use "Polymerization".) This card cannot be Special Summoned from the Graveyard. You can discard 1 card to destroy 1 card your opponent controls.
    • Reason for contradiction: When Yugi activates "Necromancy" in episode 131, "X-Head Cannon" was revived despite that it wouldn't have been there due to the Fusion Material Monsters of "XYZ Dragon Cannon" being banished.
  • Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon - Cannot be summoned unless you control a face-up "Toon World". This card cannot attack the turn it is Special Summoned. You must pay 500 Life Points to declare an attack with this monster. If "Toon World" on the field is destroyed, destroy this card. This card can attack your opponent directly, unless they control a Toon Monster. If they do control one, this card must target a Toon Monster for its attacks.
    • Reason for contradiction: Alister (who was disguised as Pegasus at the timing) summoned this card via "Toon Mask" which should have been impossible as he didn't Special Summon this card from his hand by Tributing two monsters.
  • Rope of Life - When a monster(s) is destroyed (either by battle or by card effect) and sent to your Graveyard: Discard your entire hand (min.1), then target 1 of those monsters; Special Summon it, and if you do, it gains 800 ATK.
    • Reason for contradiction: Rebecca was able to activate this card when "Luster Dragon #2" was destroyed by the effect of "Double Cloth Armor" even though it wasn't destroyed in battle.
  • Adamantine Sword Revival - Activate only when a Dragon-Type monster is Special Summoned from the Graveyard. Tribute it to Special Summon 1 "Diamond Head Dragon" from your Deck in face-up Attack Position, under the control of the controller of the Special Summoned Dragon-Type monster. The Special Summoned monster can't attack the turn it's summoned.
    • Reason for contradiction: The last effect of this card was never stated in the lore, yet "Diamond Head Dragon" wasn't allowed to attack in the second to last turn and the effect was mentioned by Duke and Rebecca, which prevented Valon from losing on that turn.
  • Roll of Fate - Roll a six-sided die. Draw cards equal to the result, then send an equal number of cards from the top of your Deck to the Graveyard.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore states that the top cards removed from the top of the controller's Deck are banished, but when this card is used, the removed cards are sent to the Graveyard, not banished.
  • Skull Dice - When an opponent's monster battles, roll a six-sided die. That monster's ATK is divided by the number rolled.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore states it can only be activated when an opponent's monster attacks, but in the duel between Joey and Solomon Muto, Joey was able to activate this card when "Swordsman of Landstar" attacked "Wandering Mummy".
  • Valkyrie Erste - Once per turn, if a monster your opponent controls is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, you can remove from play that monster from your opponent's Graveyard. This turn, this card's original ATK becomes equal to the ATK of the removed monster while it was on the field.
    • Reason for contradiction: In this card's debut episode, one copy gained the original ATK of "Insect Queen", but it seems to have gained the ATK "Insect Queen" had when it was on the field (which was 2400), otherwise Zigfried von Schroeder wouldn't have been able to conduct his OTK to both Rex Raptor and Weevil Underwood.

● Once per turn, during your Main Phase 1, Special Summon 1 random Level 4 or lower monster from your hand or Deck in face-up Attack Position. ● You cannot Normal Summon monsters. ● All monsters Special Summoned by this card's effect and all monsters your opponent controls must attack, if able. ● When an opponent's monster declares an attack, destroy that monster, and inflict damage to your opponent equal to half of that monster's ATK. ● This card cannot be destroyed by the effects of other Spells, Traps, or Effect Monsters. ● Your opponent must pay this card's maintenance cost.

    • Reason for contradiction: Despite what the written anime lore says, Leon was able to Special Summon "Forest Wolf" from his hand which should have been impossible as Leon can only summon monsters from his Deck.

Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light[edit]

  • Toon Dark Magician Girl - Cannot be summoned unless you control a face-up "Toon World". while you control "Toon World". If "Toon World" on the field is destroyed, destroy this card. Can attack your opponent directly, unless they control a Toon monster, in which case this card must target a Toon monster for its attacks. This card gains 300 ATK for every "Dark Magician" or "Magician of Black Chaos" in either player's Graveyard.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's summon was a Normal Summon in the movie as Pegasus had to use "Ultimate Offering" in order to summon "Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon" and "Toon Summoned Skull".
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's summon was a Normal Summon in the movie as Pegasus had to apply the effect of "Ultimate Offering" in order to summon it.
  • Toon Summoned Skull - Cannot be summoned unless you control a face-up "Toon World".
    • Reason for contradiction: Same reason as reason for "Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon" in the movie.
  • Pyramid of Light - All God Cards on the field are removed from play. If this face-up card is removed from your side of the field, destroy "Andro Sphinx" and "Sphinx Teleia" on your side of the field and remove them from play.
    • Reason for contradiction: Despite the written anime lore, this card still retained its TCG/OCG effect in the anime as "Andro Sphinx" and "Sphinx Teleia" were both destroyed when Yami Yugi finally destroyed this card.
