The owner (Japanese: ぬし, mochinushi) or original owner (Japanese: もともとぬし, motomoto no mochinushi) of a card is the player who possesses the card at the start of the Duel. The card's owner is distinct from its possessor (or controller while on the field)—while the possessor and controller of a card may change, its owner cannot. All cards in a player's Main Deck and Extra Deck at the start of the Duel (before drawing their opening hand) are considered to be owned by that player.

Monster Tokens are owned by the player who Special Summoned them. For example, "Ojama Tokens" Special Summoned by the effect of "Ojama Trio" are owned by the player who activated "Ojama Trio"; while "Rose Tokens" Special Summoned by the effect of "Black Garden" are owned by the player whose Summon caused the Token to be Summoned (since the effect causes that player to perform the Special Summon of the "Rose Token").

Changing possession[edit]

By default, cards remain in their owner's possession. However, many cards can change the possession of cards, such as by changing control of monsters on the field, Summoning monsters in one player's possession to the other player's side of the field, or simply taking a card from one player's hand and putting it in the other's, among other ways.

When a card is returned to the hand, Main Deck or Extra Deck, is sent to the Graveyard, or is banished, it returns to its owner's possession unless otherwise specified.
