Extra Link |
An Extra Link (Japanese: エクストラリンク, Ekusutora Rinku) is a series of co-linked Link Monsters that includes Link Monsters in both Extra Monster Zones. If Link Summoning a Link Monster to an Extra Monster Zone would create an Extra Link, the player can do so even if they already control a monster in the other Extra Monster Zone—this is the only way for a player to control monsters in both Extra Monster Zones simultaneously.
The only TCG/OCG cards whose effects depend on Extra Linking are Match winner Link Monsters and "Topologic Gumblar Dragon".

Mechanics[edit]
If there is a series of co-linked Link Monsters that includes Link Monsters in both Extra Monster Zones, all of those co-linked Link Monsters are considered to be Extra Linked. Additionally, any monster co-linked to an Extra Linked monster is also Extra Linked. An Extra Link is formed regardless of which player controls the monsters (including the monsters in the Extra Monster Zones).
If Link Summoning a Link Monster to an Extra Monster Zone would create an Extra Link, the player can do so even if they already control a monster in the other Extra Monster Zone; this is the only way for a player to control monsters in both Extra Monster Zones simultaneously. This can be used to prevent the opponent from Special Summoning monsters to the Extra Monster Zones.
Creating an Extra Link[edit]
Typically, an Extra Link requires at least five co-linked Link Monsters: three monsters in the Main Monster Zones and two in the Extra Monster Zones. It is possible to create an Extra Link using fewer than five monsters by co-linking diagonally;[1] however, there are very few Link Monsters that have the necessary pairs of Link Arrows to create a 3-card Extra Link (Top-Left and Top-Right) or 4-card Extra Link (Top-Left and Middle-Right, or Top-Right and Middle-Left) on the player's side of the field.
Most Link Monsters with the necessary Link Arrows for a 3-card Extra Link on the player's side of the field have conditions that prevent their controller from Special Summoning monsters to the Extra Monsters Zones they point to. (The Link-6 "Firewall Dragon Singularity" is the only Link Monster with these Link Arrows not to have such a condition due to its high Link Rating.) This prevents a player who does not already control both Extra Monster Zones from creating a 3-card Extra Link using only their own Link Monsters; however, a player can create an Extra Link using only three monsters if their opponent's monsters are part of the Extra Link, or if they already control Link Monsters in both Extra Monster Zones.
There is only one Link Monster to have the necessary Link Arrows for a 4-card Extra Link on the player's side of the field: the Link-6 "Firewall Dragon Singularity". However, since it also has the necessary Link Arrows to form a 3-card Extra Link, it would be more likely to be used for a 3-card Extra Link instead.

Anime[edit]
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime, Varis,[2] Playmaker,[3] Lightning,[4] and Spectre[5] have all performed an Extra Link. In particular, Lightning pulled it off using the Link Spell Card "Judgment Arrows", while Spectre performed an Extra Link consisting of seven monsters, which he dubbed "Ultimate Extra Link" ("Extra Link Full Mode" in the Japanese version).
