Nearly every day, Jaden Dueled against Koyo. When Jaden was eventually dismissed from the hospital, he continued to come back to Duel Koyo after school. Koyo opted to build new Decks, rather than use the one he used in tournaments. He beat Jaden 68 times, while Jaden only won twice. Biography[edit]
Time with Koyo[edit]
Jaden had some friends who Dueled, but Jaden saw it as an intellectual activity and preferred to partake in sports like baseball. His preference for physical pursuits resulted in him breaking a bone in his foot, causing him to spend some time in hospital.[2]
Jaden wore a cast and needed crutches, making it difficult to use the bathroom. He was saved by another patient, Koyo Hibiki, when he slipped and nearly fell over one day. The two then spent some time outside, where Koyo told Jaden about how he was a professional Duelist. Since they each had nothing else to do in the hospital, Koyo encouraged Jaden to take up Dueling, so they could play to pass the time. They were then approached by Koyo's sister, Midori, who scolded Koyo for sneaking out of his room. Jaden was told that she was going to be a trainer at Duel Academy and was surprised to hear of the existence of a school that trains Duelists.[2]
Jaden was told he would get a chance to Duel against the tournament Deck, after he went professional. Jaden admired the Deck, particularly the one-of-a-kind card, "Elemental Hero Terra Firma". He asked if it was Koyo's favorite. While he regarded it as important, Koyo preferred "Winged Kuriboh", which Jaden found odd, as he considered it to be a weak card and thought Koyo was joking when he claimed that there was a spirit living in the card.[2]
Koyo acquired an exit pass from the hospital to participate in a Dueling tournament, because he wanted Jaden to see him fighting as a Duelist. In his excitement, Jaden found it difficult to fall asleep the night before the tournament and woke up late the next day. By the time he arrived at the stadium, Koyo had collapsed and was being put into an ambulance, which Jaden chased after screaming Koyo's name.[2] Jaden blamed himself for Koyo collapsing, because Koyo had taken part in the tournament for him. Midori made sure Koyo showed Jaden he was full of life in order to ease his guilt, when Jaden came to visit.[3]
Koyo told Jaden about the costume he wore for the tournament, but Midori insisted it was lame. Koyo suggested that Jaden take until the next Sunday to make the best Deck that he could and then he would face in a serious Duel, using his tournament Deck. Jaden took the time to build an "Elemental Hero" Deck, featuring different "Elemental Heroes" than the ones present in Koyo's tournament Deck. When Jaden arrived for the Duel, Midori gave his a v2 Duel Disk as a present. Jaden was concerned that it may have been expensive, but she told he should not worry about that and brought him to the roof, where Koyo was kitted in his tournament costume, ready to Duel.[3]
During the Duel, Midori commented on one of Jaden's plays spurting an argument between her and Koyo as to whether she was helping or encouraging Jaden. Jaden started laughing and explained that not having any siblings of his own, it was interesting hearing them bicker. Midori replied that she could Jaden's older sister, in that case.[4] Jaden performed well enough to trigger the condition Tragoedia inflicted on Koyo, causing Koyo to suffer each time he drew a card while Dueling seriously.[3][5] Koyo informed Jaden that this was to be his last Duel and that he was thankful to have Jaden as his last opponent. Koyo went on to win the Duel, which he and Jaden both admitted was fun. Jaden announced his intentions to become a Duelist. Koyo then entrusted him with his Deck and the coat, he had worn.[6]
Jaden made plans to enter a town Dueling tournament. He went to the hospital to break the news to Koyo. However the physical draining from Tragoedia's curse during their last Duel had caused Koyo to fall into a coma. Jaden suspected Koyo's condition was due to their Duel and ran to the roof to cry. As he wept, he saw the spirit of Winged Kuriboh for the first time and began to laugh, as he realized that Koyo was telling him the truth about there being a spirit in that card.[6][7]
Duel Academy induction[edit]
Jaden defeated Dr. Crowler in the Duel Academy entrance exam and was placed in the Slifer Red dormitory.[8]
Jaden heard that the trainee teacher, Mr. Ryuga, had been taking cards from students he defeated, including Syrus Truesdale. Enraged by this, Jaden challenged Ryuga to a Duel, which Crowler sanctioned as the last necessary Duel Ryuga needed to win before becoming a teacher. Unbeknownst to Jaden, Ryuga cheated by using a ring that disabled the Duel Disks ability to read Spell Cards. However Jaden won by combining his Monster and Trap Cards and damaged Ryuga's ring with his final attack.[8]
Jaden was honored to be facing Chazz Princeton, when they were matched up for a skill lesson. Chazz was disgusted by Jaden's comparison of "Winged Kuriboh" to "Light and Darkness Dragon", but soon learned that it was Jaden's Spirit Partner. Chazz attempted to win without his own Spirit Partner, but lost to Jaden's "Winged Kuriboh LV10". Afterwards Jaden caught a glimpse of the Light and Darkness Dragon spirit.[9][10]
Jaden tried borrowing the Battle City DVD from Alexis Rhodes, only to find she had lent it to somebody else. Bastion Misawa, who had grown jealous of Jaden's card drawing ability and friendship with Alexis, had both the Duelist Kingdom and Battle City DVDs. Bastion challenged Jaden to a Duel, waging a loan of the Duelist Kingdom DVD for Alexis' contact details. Alexis arrived to give Jaden the Battle City DVD shortly before Jaden won. When she heard that Bastion had the Duelist Kingdom DVD, Jaden suggested that she and Bastion share contact details. Despite winning the Duel, Jaden had to allow Alexis to watch the Duelist Kingdom DVD, before he could borrow it.[11][12]
Being the only student who hadn't voted in the 2004 Miss Duel Academy pageant, Jaden was urged to make to the tiebreaking vote between Seika Kohinata and Alexis. Seika challenged Jaden to a Duel for his vote, but Alexis refused to have someone else make her decisions. Instead Jaden and Alexis Dueled under the condition that Alexis could withdraw from the competition if she won and Seika would get Jaden's vote if Jaden won. Although Jaden won, Seika said it wouldn't be right for her to accept Jaden's vote after the fight Alexis put up.[13][14]
Crowler misinterpreted an exam score sheet and thought Syrus had scored a 0. He also took note of how Jaden hadn't passed a single written exam. As punishment, he arranged a Duel between Jaden and Syrus, where Syrus would be expelled if he lost and Jaden would have his Deck confiscated if he lost. Jaden initially tried to somehow avoid the Duel, but Syrus insisted that he wanted to proudly Duel someone he respected and become stronger. Although Syrus put up a strong fight, Jaden painfully pushed himself to win. Before Crowler could expel Syrus, Midori Hibiki arrived and explained the misunderstanding. She also asked to see Jaden, who really failed the test, to arrange a resit.[15][16]
Hibiki had Jaden and Syrus bring the study cards from the reference room to her office. She thanked them on arrival and apologized for grief caused by midterm mix up. She assured Jaden he would not have to worry about losing the Deck again. Jaden replied that having Dueled with Deck since back then, the Deck was like another part of himself and Hibiki thanked him for holding it in high regard. Syrus, who was unaware that Jaden had received the Deck from Koyo was puzzled by the conversation. After leaving the office, Syrus told Jaden about a photo of a man he saw in the office and wondered if he was Hibiki's boyfriend. Jaden told him that it was her brother, Koyo. Syrus had deduced that he was a pro Duelist and asked how Jaden knew who it was. Chazz Princeton then interrupted and said that Koyo was a three-time champion of the Duel World Championships and asked how Jaden was in possession of "Terra Firma", an exclusive card which had been awarded to Koyo. Jaden simply said someone gave it to him. Chazz was dissatisfied with the answer, but Jaden insisted it was the truth regardless and suggested that he and Syrus head to their class.[2]
During a practical skills class held jointly between Slifer Red, Ra Yellow and Obelisk Blue, Jaden could not understand Syrus discomfort in the fact that they could end up facing Obelisk Blue students. Jaden was paired with an Obelisk Blue student and as he stepped up to face him, thought about how he getting closer to becoming a Duelist like Koyo. He thought about how he was even clad in burning red like Koyo had been and that after he becomes a true Duelist, Koyo must promise to face him in a fun Duel.[6]
Zane Truesdale homecoming tournament[edit]
Jaden took part in the main tournament of the series, where he loses to Chazz in the finals. Although he defeated Chazz earlier, Chazz was able to overcome him in the rematch.
Following his defeat to Chazz, Winged Kuriboh led Jaden to the Abandoned Dorm, where he found Midori Dueling Mackenzie. Seeing Jaden, Midori attempts to comeback from a Duel she was going to deliberately lose but is unable to win by that point. After the Duel, Jaden is powerless to save her from succumbing to the shadows. However, Jaden is able to defeat Reggie in a Duel, freeing her from the influence of Tragoedia and reviving Midori.
Exchange student battles[edit]
Jaden ceases to use Koyo's Heroes and instead uses a Deck of his own design containing the "Masked Hero" series. Although he does retain "Winged Kuriboh".
His first on-panel use of his new Deck is in a losing effort against Aster Phoenix and his "Vision Hero" monsters. Jaden is later challenged by Adrian Gecko, whom Principal MacKenzie promised to promote to the Pro League should he defeat Jaden. Despite Adrian's use of the Legendary Planet "The Despair Uranus", Jaden ultimately defeats him. Immediately after this, he is confronted by Atticus Rhodes, who is under the full influence of Tragoedia. Jaden antes "Elemental Hero Terra Firma" and "Winged Kuriboh" against the restoration of Koyo's health. This backfires, as Atticus defeats him with a combination of "The Suppression Pluto" and "The Eye of Truth". With that loss, Tragoedia absorbs his missing heart from the spirit of Winged Kuriboh, but the spirit narrowly saves Jaden from the Penalty Game beforehand.
Jaden and Chazz confront Tragoedia at the warehouse by the docks, and they Duel as a team against him. Though they gain an early advantage,[17] Tragoedia comes back with a wide array of cards that he designed himself.[18] Pushed into a corner, Chazz leaves Jaden his face-down "Hopeful Future", knowing the outcome of the Duel will be determined on the next turn.[19] Jaden combines "Winged Kuriboh" with "Light and Darkness Dragon" to create "Ma'at", which lends its power to defeat Tragoedia. The spirits of "Winged Kuriboh" and "Light and Darkness Dragon" sacrifice themselves to seal Tragoedia permanently. Years later, after graduation, Jaden faces a revived Koyo for the world title.[20]
When the Ultimate God is making offers to Yusei, Dark Yugi and Jaden are shown dueling alongside Yusei in one of the visions, with the offer being for Yusei to duel alongside the past King of Games.
Deck[edit]
Elemental Hero[edit]
Jaden uses an "Elemental Hero" Deck, different from that of his anime counterpart. The Deck once belonged to Koyo Hibiki, but Jaden had modified it throughout the years. Though he later switches to "Masked Heroes" as he felt that he dishonored Koyo while Dueling Reggie MacKenzie, Jaden uses this Deck once more against Tragoedia, wanting to symbolically stand with Koyo to defeat the monster that put him into a coma.

- In the English manga, starting with volume 2, Jaden is the only character who refers to Midori Hibiki as "Ms. Midori" while everybody else calls her "Ms. Hibiki".
- However, in volume one of the GX manga Jaden addressed her as "Ms. Hibiki".
