More than twenty years in the future, in the past, Reiji Akaba sits in his family's underground laboratory. The computer's AI informs him that he's been working for ten hours now, and asks if he would like a break. Reiji refuses, as his father asked him to finish analyzing the data material from his recent experiments today. If his own mind can help in any way, then he's happy to do what he can. Besides, Reiji finds this data on the G.O.D. entity quite interesting. At that moment, the room starts to shake, as though from an earthquake. Reiji rises to investigate, only to find the lab's blast door has been sealed from a remote command.
 +
 +
Reiji notices one of the monitors of his computer with a view of outside - only to see dozens of meteors striking the city. On another nearby monitor, Reiji's father Leo Akaba appears. He's happy to see his son is still there, and that his enthousiasm for research has saved him - even with his gifted mind, Leo knew it would take more than a day for Reiji to finish his task. Reiji asks if his father locked him in on purpose, and Leo agrees, telling his son that the lab is in reality a shelter, meant to save Reiji. Reiji is scared and confused, and Leo explains to him that the world is about to end from G.O.D.'s power. Yusho Sakaki has taken the card and will soon release its power.
 +
 +
Leo tells his son to look closely, and Reiji notices a clock on the wall start ticking slower and slower. It stops, and then just as suddenly starts to tick backwards. This too, Leo says, is G.O.D.'s doing. To better control its power, Yusho will send his son Yuya Sakaki to the past, and so it's up to Reiji to stop him. Reiji is too stunned to say anything. Leo smiles, and simply says goodbye to his son before cutting off the video feed. Leo calls out to his father as a bright flash of light bursts throughout the shelter.

More than twenty years in the past, in the present, the fierce Duel between Reiji Akaba and Yuya Sakaki continues. Reiji, after demonstrating his own ability to use the Pendulum Summon developed by their fathers, has just used his mighty D/D/D Supersight King Zero Maxwell to destroy Yuya's defenses and reduce his LP to 1200. Reiji Sets a card before ending his turn. Yuya stands and tells Reiji that he's wrong about him - he didn't come to this era to control G.O.D.. Reiji tells him to be quiet, and that he'll only listen if Yuya somehow wins.
 +
 +
Yuya takes his turn. Perhaps he used his entire hand last turn, but he's ready to start a new show. Yuya asks Reiji if he knows what hurts magicians the most, but Reiji doesn't reply, glaring at Yuya coldly. Even if Reiji has zero interest, Yuya continues, saying that it's when the audience just isn't enjoying the show. Reiji interrupts, saying that Yuya's Scale is at 0. Not listening, Yuya declares that he won't give up, not until Reiji finally starts having fun. All of his Performapal Card Gardnas that Reiji had destroyed last turn were Pendulum Monsters, so with his Pendulum Scale set at 1 and 4, he can Summon them again. Reiji cuts Yuya off, snapping that he just said Yuya's Scale is at 0. Activating the effect of Scale Surveyor in his own Pendulum Zone, he has reduced the Pendulum Scale of Yuya's two Pendulum Monsters to 0 for the turn.
 +
 +
Yuya is surprised by this development, but there's still a way to entertain Reiji. In a flash, Yuya disappears, and Yuto appears, griping that Yuya told him to disappear earlier, but has now changed his tune. Yuto declares himself to be Reiji's opponent now, and activates Pendulum XYZ, allowing him to perform an Xyz Summon using the monsters in his Pendulum Zones, and by making one monster the same Level as the other. Making Odd-Eyes Persona Dragon Level 7 to match Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon, Yuto builds the Overlay Network. Yuto Xyz Summons Dark Anthelion Dragon, a Pendulum Xyz Monster with 3000 ATK
 +
 +
Yuto activates his monster's effect: by using one of its Overlay Units, it can reduce an opponent's monster's ATK by half, gain that lost ATK for itself, then increase Yuto's LP by that same amount. He chooses Reiji's Zero Maxwell, reducing its ATK by 1400, increasing his monster's ATK to 4400, and increasing his LP to 2600. In addition, Dark Anthelion Dragon can't be destroyed during the turn Yuya uses this effect. Reiji notes that this single effect is very efficient, but Yuto remarks that now's not the time to analyze his opponent. Yuto attacks Zero Maxwell with Dark Anthelion Dragon. However, Reiji reveals that when Zero Maxwell is destroyed in battle, the damage he takes is reduced to zero. Yuto ends his turn, and with a flash, he passes control back to Yuya. In addition, Dark Anthelion Dragon's effect expires, returning its ATK to its normal value.
 +
 +
Reiji begins his turn, and informs Yuya that unfortunately, despite his efforts, Zero Maxwell is a Pendulum Monster as well. With his Scale set at 1 and 9, Reiji Pendulum Summons D/D/D Supersight King Zero Maxwell from his Extra Deck in Attack Position. Yuya notes to himself that if that's the case, he can't just destroy Reiji's monster - he needs to reduce Reiji's LP to 0 in a single attack. Reiji continues by activating Block Attack, which forces Dark Anthelion Dragon into Defense Position. Reiji follows up with an immediate attack on Dark Anthelion Dragon. He activates his monster's effect, reducing Dark Anthelion Dragon's DEF to 0, while his monster can still inflict piercing damage. If the attack connects, Yuya's 2600 LP won't hold out.
 +
 +
Yuya reveals that his monster's effect can be activated during either player's turn, and activates it now. He detaches Dark Anthelion Dragon's last Overlay Unit to halve Zero Maxwell's ATK to 1400, increase his monster's ATK by 1400, and increase his LP to 4000. In addition, Dark Anthelion Dragon can't be destroyed during the turn Yuya uses this effect. The attack continues, and while Yuya's monster is safe, Yuya's LP are reduced to 2600. In addition, Reiji activates his Set 00 Rush. Since his monster has attacked a Defense Position monster with 0 DEF, his monster can attack again. Reiji continues his assault, and Yuya's LP fall to 1200, putting him back where he started. Reiji sets a card to end his turn, and Dark Anthelion Dragon's effect expires, returning their monsters' ATK to their normal values.
 +
 +
Yuya begins his turn by activating Pendulum Halt, allowing him to draw two cards, as he has at least three face-up Pendulum Monsters in his Extra Deck. Seeing the cards he drew, a voice in Yuya's head declares that this is his cue to appear. In a flash, Yuya is replaced by Yuri, who says he's been wanting a match with Reiji. Yuri activates Dowsing Fusion, allowing him to Fusion Summon using Pendulum Monsters in his Graveyard as Fusion Material, by adding those monsters to his face-up Extra Deck. Yuri fuses Odd-Eyes Persona Dragon and Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon to Fusion Summon Starving Venemy Dragon, a Pendulum Fusion Monster. Reiji smiles to himself, thinking that with a Pendulum Xyz and a Pendulum Fusion, things might actually start to get entertaining.

Reiji uses his set Pendulum Scales to Pendulum Summon "Zero Maxwell" (2800/2500) from his Extra Deck. He activates "Block Attack", switching "Anthelion Dragon" to Defense Position. "Zero Maxwell" attacks "Anthelion Dragon", with its effect activating, reducing the latter's DEF to zero. Yuya activates the effect of "Anthelion Dragon", detaching its last Xyz Material to halve the ATK of "Zero Maxwell" (ATK 2800 → 1400), increase its own ATK by the same amount (ATK 3000 → 4400) and recover Yuya's LP by that same amount (Yuya 2600 → 4000). Furthermore, "Anthelion Dragon" prevents its own destruction the turn Yuya has activated its effect, so it isn't destroyed by the attack, but the effect of "Zero Maxwell" still inflicts piercing battle damage to Yuya (Yuya 4000 → 2600). Reiji activates his face-down "00 Rush", allowing "Zero Maxwell" to attack "Anthelion Dragon" again; once more, "Anthelion Dragon" isn't destroyed, but Yuya takes piercing battle damage (Yuya 2600 → 1200). * This chapter's Japanese name holds a double meaning. While the Furigana forces the reading "Pendulum(s)", the base Kanji reads "(The) Two Destined Ones/(The) Destined Two" (運命の二人 Unmei no futari), making the base form read something along the lines of "The Destined Two Swing!", while the Furigana makes one read it as "The Pendulum(s) Swing!/Swinging Pendulum(s)!".

"Swinging Pendulums of Destiny!", titled "Swinging Pendulums!" (揺れる運命の二人ペンデュラムYureru Pendyuramu!) in the Japanese version, is the sixteenth chapter of the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V manga.

This chapter was first printed in Japanese in the January 2017 issue of V Jump, released on November 21, 2016, and in English in the November 21, 2016 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump.

While Reiji's mysterious past is gradually revealed, the clash between him and Yuya intensifies as Yuya's other personalities join the Duel.

Summary[edit]

Activating the effect of D/D Scale Surveyor in his own Pendulum Zone, he has reduced the Pendulum Scale of Yuya's two Pendulum Monsters to 0 for the turn.

Featured Duel: Yuya Sakaki vs. Reiji Akaba[edit]

Duel continues from the previous Scale.

Turn 2: Reiji
Reiji Sets 1 card.

Turn 3: Yuya
Yuya attempts to use his set Pendulum Scales to Pendulum Summon his monsters back from his Extra Deck, however, Reiji activates the Pendulum Effect of "D/D Scale Surveyor", setting both of Yuya's Pendulum Scales to zero ("Odd-Eyes Persona Dragon": Scale 1 → 0) ("Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon": Scale 4 → 0).

At this point, Yuto switches places with Yuya.

Yuto activates "Pendulum XYZ", allowing him to treat the Level of "Persona Dragon" as the same Level as "Phantom Dragon" and use both cards from his Pendulum Zones as Xyz Materials. He overlays the Level 7 "Persona Dragon" and "Phantom Dragon" to Xyz Summon "Dark Anthelion Dragon" (3000/2500). Yuto activates the effect of "Anthelion Dragon": by detaching 1 Xyz Material, "Anthelion Dragon" halves the ATK of "D/D/D Supersight King Zero Maxwell" (ATK 2800 → 1400), increases its own ATK by the same amount (ATK 3000 → 4400) and recovers Yuto's LP by that same amount (Yuto 1200 → 2600). "Anthelion Dragon" attacks and destroys "Zero Maxwell", but the latter's effect reduces the battle damage to Reiji's LP to zero.

As his turn ends, Yuto switches back to Yuya.

Turn 4: Reiji
Reiji Sets 1 card. During the End Phase, the effect of "Anthelion Dragon" wears off, returning its own ATK, as well as the ATK of "Zero Maxwell" to their original values.

Turn 5: Yuya
Since Yuya currently has 3 Pendulum Monsters in his Extra Deck, he activates "Pendulum Halt", drawing 2 cards.

At this point, Yuri switches places with Yuya.

Yuri activates "Dowsing Fusion", allowing him to use Pendulum Monsters from his Graveyard as Fusion Materials. Yuri fuses "Persona Dragon" and "Phantom Dragon" to Fusion Summon "Starving Venemy Dragon" (2500/2000).

Duel continues in the next Scale.

Trivia[edit]

 • This chapter's Japanese name holds a double meaning.
