Artwork

The artwork or illustration (イラスト Irasuto, lit. "Illust.") is a section on cards in card games in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. It is purely cosmetic and has no gameplay function.

Regardless of artwork, all TCG/OCG cards with the same name are considered to be the same card. All variant artwork cards have the same password as their originals, except the alternate artwork of "Polymerization" and Arkana's alternate artwork of "Dark Magician".

Certain rarities of cards have foil artwork. Different rarities may have different types of foils. Uniquely, Over Rush Rares cards feature the monster's body extending beyond the artwork's bounds and into the card's frame.

Variant artwork[edit]

Some cards are reprinted with different artwork to their original print. While cards with alternate artwork will commonly have two different artworks, popular cards (such as "Blue-Eyes White Dragon") may have many more different artworks.

Variant artworks in Rush Duel tend to be much more subdued compared to the TCG/OCG, often simply changing the background or a monster's facial expression, adding visual effects that suggest the monster is about to attack, or recoloring the image golden. Many of them were released exclusively as promotional cards bundled with DVDs and Blu-Rays of the Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS and Yu-Gi-Oh! GO RUSH!! anime or given out during collaborations with other brands, but there are also 4 in every Deck Mod Pack since Oblivion of the Flash.

Misprints[edit]

In its TCG debut set Magician's Force, "Dark Paladin" was mistakenly printed with alternate artwork that was intended for use on the Duel Master's Guide promotional card version, instead of its original OCG artwork. Customers were given the opportunity to exchange their misprinted cards for 1st Edition copies with the correct artwork. The misprint was corrected in Unlimited Edition reprints.

Modified artwork[edit]

Some cards have their artwork modified for releases in certain regions, most commonly being edited from the Japanese artwork for release in the TCG and in Korean. These edits exist even on cards that debut in the TCG.

Sometimes one version of the artwork is released in regions it was not designed for as alternate artwork; for example, "Monster Reborn" originally had a different artwork in the TCG and OCG, but both versions have since been released in both formats.

The Lost Art Promotion, a long-running TCG promotion, exists solely for this purpose, with Japanese "Monster Reborn" being its first featured card. Although Japan and China do not currently have an established method for importing the edited versions of pre-existing cards (TCG "Monster Reborn" having been imported as a tournament prize), Extra Packs since Extra Pack 2015 include both versions of all edited TCG-premiere cards they introduce to Japan.
