Yu-Gi-Oh! R is a manga series that is a spinoff of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.

Yu-Gi-Oh! R was published in V Jump in Japan and published in English by Viz Media. The manga is made by Akira Ito. Yu-Gi-Oh! R features an additional plotline which takes place after the defeat of Marik Ishtar.

Plot

The plot involves Yako Tenma, the protégé of Maximillion J. Pegasus, trying to avenge the death of Pegasus.

Tenma takes over KaibaCorp while Seto Kaiba is in the United States. He kidnaps Anzu Mazaki, prompting Yugi Mutou and his friends Katsuya Jonouchi and Hiroto Honda to face Tenma's Project R.A. ("Rebirth of the Avatar") and Duel a number of Card Professors. Seto Kaiba and his brother Mokuba also come to the scene to rescue the company.

Special rules

The end of Yu-Gi-Oh! R volume 4: "Return of the Dragon" outlines the set of rules that the Yu-Gi-Oh! R series follows. They are based on the Super Expert Rules (which are used during the Battle City arc and the Rite of the Duel).

Game start

• Both players start the Duel with 4000 Life Points.
• Each player's opening hand consists of six cards. Each player draw one card at the start of their first turn (so will have seven cards in their hand at the start of their first turn).
  • This rule is due to the fact that this same rule was used in the Rite of the Duel in the manga.

Main Phase

• Each player may only activate one Spell Card from their hand during each of their turns.
• Each player may only Set one Spell Card and one Trap Card card during each of their turns.
  • If a player tries to cheat by attempting to Set two Spell Cards or two Trap Cards, their Duel Disk will sound an alarm.
• Face-down Spell Cards can be activated whenever the phase changes.
• Face-down Trap Cards can be activated whenever their activation timing occurs, beginning from the moment they are Set on the field.
• Monsters can be Normal Summoned in face-up Attack Position or face-up Defense Position. They can also be Normal Set (although this never occurs in the Yu-Gi-Oh! R manga).

Battle Phase

• Players can declare attacks with multiple monsters at once.
• If only one attack is declared, the attack functions like it does in the OCG.
• If multiple monsters declare attacks at the same time, first all of the attacking monsters and their respective attack targets are selected, then the game can proceed to the Damage Step. All damage from simultaneous attacks is inflicted simultaneously (even if the panel is drawn in a way that might make it appear otherwise).
  • For example, in Yu-Gi-Oh! R Duel Round 24: "Another Partner!!", during Yugi Mutou's Duel with Depre Scott, Depre attacks Yugi directly with "Eva Epsilon" and "Greed Quasar" at the same time. Yugi takes the direct attack from "Greed Quasar", but activates the effect of "Toy Box" to Special Summon the "Toy Magician" that was hidden inside it and redirects the attack of "Eva Epsilon" to "Toy Magician", after which "Toy Magician" destroys "Eva Epsilon" by battle. Due to taking the direct attack from "Greed Quasar", Yugi activates "Fit of Rage", increasing "Toy Magician's" ATK points (after it had already battled "Eva Epsilon").
• Fusion Monsters cannot declare an attack on the turn they are Fusion Summoned. In addition, Fusion Monsters count as multiple monsters, equal to the number of its Fusion Materials.
