* Domino Effect - When a monster your opponent controls is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, you can send any number of cards you control to the Graveyard to destroy a number of monster(s) your opponent controls equal to the number of cards sent.

** Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore is the same as the OCG lore contradicting how it was used in the episode.

* Broken Blocker - Activate only when a Defense Position monster you control, whose DEF is higher than its ATK, is destroyed. Special Summon up to 2 monsters with the same name as that monster from your Deck in face-up Defense Position.

** Reason for contradiction: When Yusei activates this card to regain control of "Junk Warrior", it was switched to Attack Position right after Yusei regained control of it, but this shouldn't have happened as the written anime lore doesn't say this. When Andre activates this card in episode 99, it did follow what the written lore said.

** Reason for contradiction: During Yusei's second Duel against Trudge, this card gained 1000 ATK even though "Speed Spell - Dash Pilfer" was played before this card was summoned. In addition to this, this card didn't gain ATK during Yusei's Duel against Leo even though he had played "Card Rotator" that turn.

* Junk Warrior - This card gains ATK equal to the total ATK of all Level 2 and lower monsters you control. If any Level 2 and lower monsters you control had their attack altered during the Battle Phase, this card's ATK will not change until the end of the Battle Phase.

During your End Phase: Destroy all other monsters you control that did not declare an attack this turn. Monsters Summoned after your Battle Phase are excluded from this effect. This card must also remain face-up on the field to activate and to resolve this effect.

* Thorn of Malice - Equip only to a "Black Rose Dragon" or a Plant-Type monster. It gains 600 ATK. When the equipped monster attacks a Defense Position monster, whose DEF is lower than the equipped monster's ATK, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent. If it attacks, the attack target loses 600 ATK and DEF after damage calculation. The attack target is not destroyed by battle. When this card is removed from the field, any changes to ATK and DEF this card caused are negated.

** Reason for contradiction: During Akiza's second Duel against Yusei, the decreases this card caused to "Stardust Dragon" are nullified after this card was removed from the field, when they should have remained until "Stardust Dragon" was removed from the field and then brought back to the field.

* Wonder Clover - Quick-Play Spell Card

** Reason for contradiction: During Akiza's second Duel against Yusei, Akiza activates this card during the Battle Phase, even though the anime version of this card and the TCG/OCG version of this card are Normal Spell Cards.

* Blackwing Armor Master - This card cannot be destroyed by battle, and you take no Battle Damage from battles involving this card. If this card attacks a monster, you can place 1 Wedge Counter on that monster at the end of the Damage Step (max. 1). You can remove all Wedge Counters from your opponent's monsters to reduce the ATK and DEF of each monster that had a Wedge Counter to 0, until the End Phase (You can activate this effect during your Main Phase or Battle Phase).

* Sad Story - Sorrowful Memories - Other Spell Cards cannot be activated the turn you activate this card. Spell Cards activated prior to this card's activation are excluded. * Multiple Piece Golem - Level 6 Monster (Episode 76 only)
 +
** Reason for contradiction: This card was Level 7 during its debut episode, but in episode 76, Jack used this card with "Sinister Sprocket" for the Synchro Summon of "Chaos King Archfiend", which should have been impossible under normal means.

* Blackwing - Jetstream the Blue Sky - You can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard to prevent 1 "Blackwing" monster you control from being destroyed this turn and reduce the Battle Damage you would take from all battles involving that "Blackwing" monster 0.
 +
** Reason for contradiction: When this card's effect was used in Crow's Duel against Bolton, the Battle Damage was nullified, but the written anime lore of "Jetstream the Blue Sky" doesn't say that.

* Chain Arrow - Select 1 face-up monster on the field. Once during this turn, if that monster battles with another monster, it gains 500 ATK during damage calculation only. ** Reason for contradiction: Andre managed to activate this card when Yusei destroyed "Speed Spell - The End of the Storm" to Special Summon "Card Breaker". If this card can only activate when the said Spell Card is destroyed by an effect, it would be impossible for Andre to activate this card the way he activated it as Yusei destroyed "The End of the Storm" for a Summoning condition, not an effect.

* Imperial Register - Once per turn, if a monster you control loses ATK, you can select 1 face-up monster you control. It gains ATK equal to the changed amount until the End Phase.
 +
** Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore states it only works when a monster loses ATK through a card effect, but "Jester Lord" only lost ATK because the condition of its effect was no longer valid.
 +
 +
* Black-Winged Dragon (episodes 94-121) - Whenever you would take damage other than battle damage, this card can lose ATK equal to the damage instead. Once per turn, you can increase this card's ATK by any amount lost by this effect. Afterwards, all face-up monster(s) your opponent controls loses ATK equal to that amount.
 +
** Even though the effect of "Black-Winged Dragon" was more like its real life effect starting from episode 105, its initial anime effect (from episodes 94 and 95) was used in episode 121 during Crow's Duel against Taro.

* Two-Pronged Attack - Select and destroy 2 of your monsters. Destroy 1 of your opponent's monsters.
 +
** Reason for contradiction: When this card's effect was negated by "Guard Mines", "Zarigun" and "Eyearmor" should have remained on the field, but they left the field even though the real version and the anime version of this card has no actual cost.

* Zushin the Sleeping Giant - This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card cannot be Special Summoned except by Tributing 1 Level 1 monster that has remained face-up on your side of the field for 10 or more of your turns. If this card battles with an opponent's monster, until the end of the Damage Step, it gains ATK equal to the ATK of the opponent's monster + 1000. Also if the monster that this card battles have effect(s) that affect this card, those effects are negated until the end of the Damage Step. This card cannot be targeted by the effects of your opponent's Spell/Trap Cards.

** Reason for contradiction: Despite this card's written anime lore, it didn't affect the effects of "Black-Winged Dragon" and "Shooting Star Dragon". If it had affected the latter, Yusei wouldn't have been able to save his "Shooting Star Dragon" from being destroyed.

* Thor, Lord of the Aesir - Once per turn, you can select 1 face-up monster your opponent controls. Until the End Phase, negate the effect(s) of that monster, and you can use the negated effect(s) as this card's effect. During the End Phase, if this face-up card on the field was destroyed and sent to the Graveyard this turn, you can Special Summon this card from the Graveyard. When it is Special Summoned by this effect, inflict 800 damage to your opponent.
 +
** Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore does not say that the first effect is temporary yet it was the case whenever this card negated the effects of "Top Runner" and the ATK gain remained until the end of Dragan's turn.

* Odin, Father of the Aesir - Once per turn, during your Main Phase, you can negate the effects of Spell/Trap Cards that affects a Divine-Beast-Type monster(s) until the End Phase. During the End Phase, if this face-up card on the field was destroyed and sent to the Graveyard this turn, you can Special Summon this card from the Graveyard. When it is Special Summoned by this effect, you can draw 1 card.
 +
** Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore says the first effect is a Continuous effect and it does not say it lasts until the end of your turn. This contradicts Halldor activating this card's first effect as an Ignition effect and the effect remaining active until the End Phase.

* Majestic Star Dragon - You can Tribute this card to negate the activation of an opponent's Spell Card, Trap Card, or Effect Monster's effect and destroy all cards your opponent controls. Once per turn, you can negate the effect(s) of 1 face-up monster your opponent controls until the End Phase. Also, if the negated effect can be activated, you can activate it once as this card's effect. During your End Phase, return this card from the field to the Extra Deck, and Special Summon 1 "Stardust Dragon" from your Graveyard.

 +
** Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore states it only negates the effects of [face-up]] Divine-Beast monsters on the controller's field, but Yusei still managed to use "Trick Mirror" to change the activation of "Trick Mirror" and negate the effects of the "Aesirs" even though Halldor still controlled the "Aesirs" at the time.

Latest revision as of 04:33, 6 September 2019

There are many occasions in which a card, in the anime, may contradict its lore in the anime. These are usually due to errors on the writers' part.

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's[edit]

  • Domino Effect - When a monster your opponent controls is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, you can send any number of cards you control to the Graveyard to destroy a number of monster(s) your opponent controls equal to the number of cards sent.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore is the same as the OCG lore contradicting how it was used in the episode.
  • Broken Blocker - Activate only when a Defense Position monster you control, whose DEF is higher than its ATK, is destroyed. Special Summon up to 2 monsters with the same name as that monster from your Deck in face-up Defense Position.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore is the same as the OCG lore contradicting how it was used in the episode.
  • Speed Spell - Dash Pilfer - (Episode 3 only) Activate only if you have 4 or more Speed Counters. Take control of 1 face-up Defense Position monster your opponent controls, until the End Phase and change it to Attack Position.
    • Reason for contradiction: When Yusei activates this card to regain control of "Junk Warrior", it was switched to Attack Position right after Yusei regained control of it, but this shouldn't have happened as the written anime lore doesn't say this. When Andre activates this card in episode 99, it did follow what the written lore said.
  • Junk Warrior - This card gains ATK equal to the total ATK of all Level 2 and lower monsters you control. If any Level 2 and lower monsters you control had their attack altered during the Battle Phase, this card's ATK will not change until the end of the Battle Phase.
    • Reason for contradiction: Despite this card's anime lore, its ATK didn't change when "Speed Warrior" gained ATK through its own effect.
  • Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind - If you control a "Blackwing" monster other than "Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind", you can Special Summon this card from your hand. Once per turn, you can halve the ATK and DEF of 1 face-up monster your opponent controls until the End Phase.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's effect expired for "Gate Blocker 2" during Yusei and Crow's Turbo Duel against two Sector Security guards when the effect should have remained on "Gate Blocker 2" until it was removed from the field.
  • Krebons - When this card is selected as an attack target, you can Pay 800 Life Points and negate the attack.
    • Reason for contradiction: When Sayer tried to activate this card's effect in response to "Power Tool Dragon" attacking this card and it failed due to "Double Tool C&D", Sayer didn't pay any Life Points even though a cost most always be done for a card effect regardless.
  • Thorn of Malice - Equip only to a "Black Rose Dragon" or a Plant-Type monster.
    • Reason for contradiction: During Akiza's second Duel against Yusei, the decreases this card caused to "Stardust Dragon" are nullified after this card was removed from the field, when they should have remained until "Stardust Dragon" was removed from the field and then brought back to the field.
  • Wonder Clover - Quick-Play Spell Card
    • Reason for contradiction: During Akiza's second Duel against Yusei, Akiza activates this card during the Battle Phase, even though the anime version of this card and the TCG/OCG version of this card are Normal Spell Cards.
  • Blackwing Armor Master - This card cannot be destroyed by battle, and you take no Battle Damage from battles involving this card.
    • Reason for contradiction: In a couple of Crow's Duels in the anime, this card's final effect was activated during the Battle Phase as after the affected monster(s) lost all their ATK and DEF due to the removal of the Wedge Counter, Crow would follow up with attacking and destroying the affected monster(s).
  • Roar of the Earthbound - Once per turn, when your opponent's monster declares an attack, if the ATK of the attacking monster is lower than that of a face-up "Earthbound Immortal" monster you control, destroy the attacking monster and inflict damage to your opponent equal to half that monster's ATK.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's anime lore looked similar to its TCG/OCG lore, but despite this, Yusei took only 900 damage which was the half the current ATK of "Speed Warrior" at that point.
  • Sad Story - Sorrowful Memories - Other Spell Cards cannot be activated the turn you activate this card. Spell Cards activated prior to this card's activation are excluded. During each player's Draw Phase, the turn player must reveal all cards they draw, and shuffle any revealed Monster Cards into the Deck.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore says that the controller can't activate any Spell Cards during the turn this card is activated, however Misty Tredwell had activated "Mirror Labyrinth" before activating this card.
  • Multiple Piece Golem - Level 6 Monster (Episode 76 only)
    • Reason for contradiction: This card was Level 7 during its debut episode, but in episode 76, Jack used this card with "Sinister Sprocket" for the Synchro Summon of "Chaos King Archfiend", which should have been impossible under normal means.
  • Justice Bringer - While you control this face-up card, when it is not your turn, the effects of all Special Summoned monsters controlled by your opponent cannot be activated and are negated until that turn's End Phase.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore should have prevented Kalin Kessler and Lawton from activating their monsters' effects, however Kalin was able to activate his monsters' effects (as it is assumed that this card could allow your Tag Partner to use their monsters' effects), but Lawton couldn't Tribute his Ambush Tokens through their effects.
  • Infernity Climber - If you have no cards in your hand while this card is in the Graveyard, you can return this card to the top of your Deck. You can activate this effect during either player's turn.
    • Reason for contradiction: Kalin activates this card's effect during Lawton's turn, which should have been impossible.
  • Blackwing - Jetstream the Blue Sky - You can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard to prevent 1 "Blackwing" monster you control from being destroyed this turn and reduce the Battle Damage you would take from all battles involving that "Blackwing" monster 0.
    • Reason for contradiction: When this card's effect was used in Crow's Duel against Bolton, the Battle Damage was nullified, but the written anime lore of "Jetstream the Blue Sky" doesn't say that.
  • Glow-Up Bulb - You can send the top card of your Deck to the Graveyard and Special Summon this card from the Graveyard. Each player can only use the effect of "Glow-Up Bulb" once per Duel.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written's anime lore would make it impossible for Akiza to activate in her Duel against Andre as she activated this card's effect on her Main Phase 1 and she only sent one card from the top of her Deck to the Graveyard not two.
  • Imperial Register - Once per turn, if a monster you control loses ATK, you can select 1 face-up monster you control. It gains ATK equal to the changed amount until the End Phase.
    • Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore states it only works when a monster loses ATK through a card effect, but "Jester Lord" only lost ATK because the condition of its effect was no longer valid.
  • Black-Winged Dragon (episodes 94-121) - Whenever you would take damage other than battle damage, this card can lose ATK equal to the damage instead. Once per turn, you can increase this card's ATK by any amount lost by this effect. Afterwards, all face-up monster(s) your opponent controls loses ATK equal to that amount.
    • Even though the effect of "Black-Winged Dragon" was more like its real life effect starting from episode 105, its initial anime effect (from episodes 94 and 95) was used in episode 121 during Crow's Duel against Taro.
  • Two-Pronged Attack - Select and destroy 2 of your monsters. Destroy 1 of your opponent's monsters.
    • Reason for contradiction: When this card's effect was negated by "Guard Mines", "Zarigun" and "Eyearmor" should have remained on the field, but they left the field even though the real version and the anime version of this card has no actual cost.
  • Thor, Lord of the Aesir - Once per turn, you can select 1 face-up monster your opponent controls.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore does not say that the first effect is temporary yet it was the case whenever this card negated the effects of "Top Runner" and the ATK gain remained until the end of Dragan's turn.
  • Odin, Father of the Aesir - Once per turn, during your Main Phase, you can negate the effects of Spell/Trap Cards that affects a Divine-Beast-Type monster(s) until the End Phase. During the End Phase, if this face-up card on the field was destroyed and sent to the Graveyard this turn, you can Special Summon this card from the Graveyard. When it is Special Summoned by this effect, you can draw 1 card.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore says the first effect is a Continuous effect and it does not say it lasts until the end of your turn. This contradicts Halldor activating this card's first effect as an Ignition effect and the effect remaining active until the End Phase.
  • Odin's Eye - While you control a face-up Divine-Beast-Type monster, this card's effect cannot be negated. You can negate the effects of all face-up Divine-Beast-Type monsters on the field, until the End Phase. If you do, look at all cards in your opponent's hand or 1 Set card they control.
    • Reason for contradiction: This card's written anime lore states it only negates the effects of [face-up]] Divine-Beast monsters on the controller's field, but Yusei still managed to use "Trick Mirror" to change the activation of "Trick Mirror" and negate the effects of the "Aesirs" even though Halldor still controlled the "Aesirs" at the time.
  • Synchro Monument - When a Tuner monster is Summoned or a Synchro Monster is Synchro Summoned, your opponent cannot activate any cards that affect you or your monsters until the End Phase (your opponent can still use card effects to change your monsters' battle positions).
    • Reason for contradiction: The written anime lore would make it impossible for Aporia to activate "Chaos Infinity" since that is still activating a card (Jack had Synchro Summoned "Red Nova Dragon" and that should have prevented Aporia from activating "Chaos Infinity").
  • Lazion, the Timelord - This card cannot be destroyed by battle or by card effects. You take no Battle Damage from battles involving this face-up Attack Position card. If this card battles, at the end of the Damage Step: Shuffle all monsters your opponent controls and all cards in your opponent's Graveyard to the Deck. When your opponent draw(s) a card during the Draw Phase: Inflict 1000 damage to your opponent. No card effects can respond to this effect's activation. You cannot Summon monsters. During your Standby Phase: Shuffle this face-up card you control to the Deck.
    • Reason for contradiction: The effect of "Black-Winged Dragon" didn't respond to this card's effect when Yusei conducted his Draw Phase and because the effect of "Black-Winged Dragon" is a Continuous Effect, the effect of "Lazion" probably can't be responded to in the anime.
